Your 2002 Ford Explorer is equipped with one of two different engines, depending on Your chosen configuration at time of purchase. You'll either be looking at A4.0L V6 engine, or a larger 4.6L V8. The smaller engine requireS5.0 quarts of SAE 5W-30 full synthetic motor oil, though You can substitute SAE 5W-40 over short periods. The larger engine requireS6.0 quarts of SAE 5W-20, with a suitable substitute being SAE 5W-30. Again, this sub is not recommended over the long term. The reason deals with oil viscosities. The alternatives are thicker solutions, so while they're a bit less expensive, they'll introduce friction into Your engine, which causes premature engine wear in tear. In all likelihood, friction will also cause Your engine to fail sooner than it otherwise would.

I've got the V8 with 300k on the clock. Should I use a thicker oil..?

The two base engines the 4.0L V6 (non-flex fuel compatible) and the 4.0L V6 (flex fuel compatible) require 5 quarts of 5W30 synthetic oil while the 4.6L V8 optional engine takes 6 quarts of 5W20 synthetic oil.
