The 2012 Honda Civic had four different engines available across three sizes. Depending on configuration, You may have a 1.5L 4Cylinder engine, one of two different 1.8L 4Cylinder engines, or a 2.4L 4Cylinder. The capacity for the 1.5L iS3.7 quarts, while botH1.8L variants each take 3.9 quarts. The largest 2.4L takeS4.2 quarts. For each engine, the oil type is the same: SAE 0W-20 full synthetic. In its absence, it's possible (but not advisable) to substitute SAE 5W-20. The reason it isn't advisable is that SAE 5W-20 has an inferior viscosity at full operating temperature. This means it's a thicker oil, which will prematurely wear and tear Your engine. Do YourseLFA favor and go for the 0W-20, even though it's a little more expensive.

Honda recommends using only engine oil licensed to the SAE classification 0W-20 for the 2012 Honda Civic. The 2012 Honda Civic engine oil capacity is 3.9 US quarts (3.7 liters).
Most have the 1.8 engine, and will use between 4.2 and 4.8 quarts depending on if the filter is also changed. Fill it with a lesser amount of oil first, check the dipstick, and add if needed. I use synthetic and the oil is good for 18k miles or more, but ALWAYS change your filter with a premium one when doing the oil!
