The 2017 Volkswagen Jetta oil type and capacity iS5w-40 or 5w-30 and 4.2 quarts. Your oil needs to be replaced eventually. Every 5,000 to 10,000 miles is a good rule of thumb. If You don't replace it, there will be issues with the engine. Having high quality oil is key for the engine to run smoothly. You will run into problems with the oil at some point. Bad oil can cause the engine to fail. A normal problem is a nasty burning smell. This needs to be looked into as soon as possible or the car might explode. You could experience terrible gas mileage. Knocking noise may come about from the engine.

The 2017 Volkswagen Jetta uses a full synthetic oil, either 5W-40 or 5W-30, whichever you prefer. The oil capacity for the Jetta's 1.4L 4 cylinder engine is 4.2 quarts. Both the 1.8L 4 cylinder and the 2.0L 4 cylinder can hold 5.8 quarts each.
My VW Jetta GLI takes 4.2 Quarts. I put in 5 US Quarts. I drove the car to the corner which would be 15 houses and I could see the smoke, I stopped the car and then i drove back home. And didnot turn the engine on. I called Findley VW and Service gave me the name of a Towing Company. I have been on a budget and was cutting corners at the wrong time and place.
Caution: lots of misinformation out there, although by this time most warranties are over. VW Oil Spec: VW 502 00** Use synthetic oil SAE 5W-40, SAE 5W-30 504.00 is also approved as superseding Not All Oil of those weights match the VW spec: Mobil 1 is an example where only the Eurocar formulation meets the spec. I recommend this NHTSA website for matching oils, noting it is hard to read: look for the 50200 /50500 spec in the comments to find those that match. Why go to such effort? A turbo car is particularly tough on oil, as the turbo bearings spin really high and are under heat duress from the exhaust, so they are subject to coking/ getting gummy from wrong oils.
