In 1985, General Motors became one of the first car companies to fit their vehicles' keys with transponders. Since then, over the years, they've slowly moved toward universally including this technology. This is because fitting keys with chips is a huge deterrent to theft -- it makes starting the car without a key difficult, if not impossible. Therefore, the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado does come with a chip in the key. This can be a pain if You're shelling out over $100 for a replacement or a spare, but it's good news in the big picture. Your vehicle is more secure, more difficult to "hotwire", and less likely to be stolen. It's an important safety feature that many consumers overlook because of its relatively high price.
