The 2007 Volvo XC90 uses a timing belt to control the timing of the engine. The belt should be serviced at 120,000 miles along with the tensioner and idler pullies. Under most circumstances, the belt will outlast the vehicle, but the tensioners and pullies are far more likely to fail. If these components fail, it could cause the belt to jump gears and would seriously affect the performance of the engine and possibly destroy it. The belt connects the crankshaft to the camshaft and synC-HRonizes the opening and closing of the valves with the raising and lowering of the pistons. When the timing of the engine gets off, the piston could smash into the valve and bend or break it.

The 2007 Volvo XC90 has a timing belt. Most timing belts will need to be replaced as part of regular maintenance every 60,000 to 100,000 miles, and most related problems are caused by not replacing it when you're supposed to.
