The 2012 Chevy Silverado does not come with a cabin air filter. Instead of the paper filter that is normally found behind the glove box there is a mesh filter that is located in the engine bay before the HVAC system. Chevrolet has found that this mesh screen can help clean the air before it gets into the HVAC system and therefore they do not need a paper filter. This system may not be as good at removing pollen and dust though as a paper filter. I recommend inspecting the mesh at least twice a year to clean it off and make sure that it is free from debris buildup.

No cabin air filter on my 2012 chevy Silverado. There is no cut away, and I'm yet to find the mesh in the engine compartment.

A couple of years bacl. I took my 2012 to the dealership to have them change the cabin air filter. I decided to do mine this weekend. I bought an STP one at the parts store...the instructions show how to take the inside cover under the dash off...(not behind the glove box...) The compartment for the filter is there, but there is no way to get into it. If there is one under the hood, I didn't know it...I'm not a car mechanic, (aircraft only) and I don't have a shop manual. One guy on you tube is literally cutting the box open with a hacksaw blade!!! Not going there. Another mechanic shows one that you roll for clearance to go in there, but at least there is an access. Love my truck, but it's a PITA when GM makes products purposely that you have to take to somebody to do what should be routine maintenance. Gonna find the one under the hood...
My 2012 gmc Sierra has no filter. Really awesome to find out after removing these dumb screws to access nothing!!!!
