If You have a 2012 Subaru Legacy, Your timing apparatus depends on the size of Your engine. In this model year, Subaru moved towards the FB motor, which uses timing chains. However, the EJ engine options still utilize a timing belt, which Subaru recommends changing every 75,000 miles or 7 years, due to routine wear and tear. Both options have their advantages and disadvantages, but most automotive experts agree that timing chains are better. This is because they have an effective lifetime of 250,000 to 300,000 miles; it's likely that Your engine will fail before the timing chain does. However, if it becomes stretched or otherwise damaged, Your replacement bill will be much higher than a belt -- sometimes in the neighborhood of $3,000.

It all depends on the engine. If it's a 2.5 with plastic covers, it's a belt. If it is an h6, it's a chain. If it's fb25, it'll have a metal cover in front and a chain
