All configurations of the 2012 Toyota Tundra use a timing chain -- post 2009, all Tundras did, regardless of what engine is under the hood. This can be a good or a bad thing, depending on Your school of thought; however, most automotive experts agree that timing chains are superior. This is due, largely, to the fact that timing chains are estimated to have an effective lifetime of 250,000 to 300,000 miles. It's likely that the rest of Your truck will fail before Your timing chain does, whereas a timing belt needs to be replaced every 75,000 to 100,000 miles. However, if something catastrophic does happen -- like timing chain stretching -- the swap costs significantly more with a timing chain.
