The manufacturer recommended gas for the 2016 VW Tiguan is regular unleaded. The octane number of the premium gas is a bit higher than regular unleaded gas, and is a measure of resistance to the knocking produced in the engine while running. Despite the misconceptions that using premium gas provides better mileage and cleans the fuel system, the premium gas does not offer any kind of benefits over the regular one. In fact, You may get a greater range of fuel economy between different brands of regular gas, than You will between the same manufacturer's regular and premium gases. Therefore, try to get Your gas from a gas station with good quality gas.

Premium is recommended. I own one and it says on the fuel door and the owners manual that the car requires premium 91 octane fuel.

Both the owner’s manual AND the fuel door both state That Premium Fuel is Required. I’m not sure about the other guys saying it’s not because even if you choose not to read your owner’s manual, when you fill it, the door plainly states it. It doesn’t say, you can use regular but premium is better, It doesn’t say Premium is NOT required, it says “ Premium fuel ONLY” so, take that for what its worth…

The recommended fuel rating for that year Tiguan is 91 RON NOT 91 Octane. Octane is a unit of measure used here in the US. The rest of the world uses RON.

The 2016 vw Tiguan does not require premium gas though it is better for the car to use it.
