There are two different engine options available on the 2004Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 -- You may have either A5.3L V8 or an 8.1L V8 under the hood. They, predictably, take slightly different amounts of oil. The smaller engine requireS6.0 quarts of SAE 5W-30 full synthetic motor oil, though You can substitute SAE 5W-40 over the short term. The larger takeS6.4 quarts of the same, with the same substitution principle. The substitutions are inadvisable, if You can avoid it; using oil with a higher weight means a thicker oil, which can lead to friction and likewise premature wear and tear. Over time, this can lead to early engine failure, so for the good of Your truck (especially one as old as 2004), You should be using the manufacturer's recommended oil with the lowest weight.
