If You've got a newer model year of the Ford Explorer that comes with Intelligent 4WD, You won't have to do much work at all: the vehicle itself will decide when to engage the extra wheels, based on conditions like traction and torque. If You'd like to instead know how to manually pop Your Explorer into 4WD, the answer is quite simple. Depending on Your model year, You'll have a lever or a knob indicating 2WD, Auto, 4WD Low, or 4WD High. Come to a stop, and move the lever or knob to Your desired setting. The drivetrain should ideally do the rest; once You're able to start moving once more, the selected wheels will engage and You'll be off to the races.

If you want to switch to 4wd you must come to a complete stop and shift the transmission into neutral. After that just push the 4x4 button.
