The simplest way to reset the Check Engine Light on a Ford Explorer is to fix the component that's causing it. This might seem simple, but it typically illuminates for a reason. With that said, there are two different ways that You should be able to make the light turn off, whether or not You've addressed the underlying issue. Just note that if You haven't, there's a good chance that the light will come back on. The first way is to connect an OBD-II scan tool and clear the trouble codes, so long as they are not permanent codes. Another is to disconnect the battery for at least 10 to 15 minutes. Once the power is reconnected, the light should have reset.

Insert the key into the ignition to do this, turn the car on for about a second, then off for about a second. Do this two times more then drive the car as normal.

This can be done by putting the car on and back off three times in quick succession.

Mine was on when the check-in person went to see about my car. It wasn't on before. Not on when I picked it up. Maybe something they have to do at Ford. Always ask for paperwork anytime you take your vehicle in. They never offered to give it. After a while, it's no longer in the computer.
