It's always possible that a blown fuse is responsible for the Toyota RAV4's power lift gate failing to properly work, but that doesn't happen as frequently as with other parts of Your vehicle (with a fuse). Sometimes it's a matter of the hinges on the gate becoming cracked, which also results in this. But, luckily, sometimes it's just gremlins. Or, I guess the official term, "slight technical glitches". Here's how to reset it, when that's the case: With the liftgate open and not moving, press and hold down the rear liftgate close button. You should hear a series of 4 beeps. (If You're not sure what button I'm talking about, it's the one on the door jamb of the rear liftgate, that's only visible when it's open). Continue to hold that until You hear another beep and release the button. Now, close the liftgate. See if it properly responds and opens normally now.

Press and hold the rear liftgate close-button until it beeps 4 times. This should reset it if it's not working.

Look in the glove box, press the on off button for the rear hatch. Worked for me. Sometimes they get pressed, especially if changing the cabin air filter, which is just above the glove box. The four beeps relate to the height the door opens. The four beeps set up doesn't reset anything but the opening height.

Hi Ola, did you ever get your issue fixed? Mine is doing that exact same thing!!
We recently bought a 2015 Rav 4 and the automatic boot is incredibly temperamental- quite often not opening more than an inch. It’s been back in to Toyota 3 times and they swear they’ve fixed it each time. It works in the garage (needless to say) but then reverts back to opening a cm again. We’re on the cusp of trading it in as it’s so frustrating.

I'm having the same problem with 2018 Rav4. I'm taking it to the dealer 250 miles away. Hope it fixesthe problem or they owe me 2 tanks of gas.

I just went to the dealer and had this fixed. Follow the instructions to reset in this thread by pushing on the button on the hatch back and hold until you hear five beeps.

I was having same issue, with liftgate opening part way and closing part way. Just replaced my battery, which was about 5 years old. Did the reset about 4 times, and now it’s working fine. Turn off PBD in vehicle settings, manually open the liftgate all the way, press the close button and you will hear two beeps, four beeps, and two beeps.Close the liftgate manually. Power vehicle back on, turn PBD back on, turn vehicle on and off. After I did this 4 times, the liftgate seems to be operating. From what I have read, it appears the Toyota batteries from factory are only lasting two to three years. After that, they may not hold enough charge to operate all of the electrical. This is something Toyota needs to look at, as it seems there are things operating all of the time that are draining the battery. Will keep you posted if the problem recurs. Mine is a 2018 gas.

Same issue with my 2019 Rav4. It is intermittent and of course never happens when I bring it in. It will often only open an inch a few times then eventually will open all the way. I have reset multiple times. Beyond annoying!
Hi can anyone help please?? 2016 rav4 trunk opens fine but when I hit close button, it goes down then about a foot away from closing it stops and beeps. I even changed the shocks and it still do it… HELP

My2015 RAV4 hs had this problem since 55k miles. Every time I have been told they don't see it. I have had to manually force open and close s9 much that my hinges have twisted. Do search for Toyota RAV4 liftgate class action lawsuit. Get your name into it.

Same with my 2019 RAV4. It’ll open a little bit and then stop. I’ll reset the height and sometimes it’ll work and sometimes it won’t. Eventually it seems like it’s properly opening and closing like normal. Then next time I drive it and try to open the trunk it goes back to the same problem of only partially opening.
