The 2016 BMW X5 40e problems are dead battery and excessive oil consumption. Having high quality oil is key for the engine to run smoothly. You will run into issues with the oil at some point. Knocking noise may show up from the engine. Bad oil can cause the engine to stop working. A common problem is an awful burning smell. This needs to be inspected as soon as possible or the car might explode. You could experience bad gas mileage. Your oil needs to be replaced eventually. Every 5,000 to 10,000 miles is a good rule of thumb. If You don't replace it, there will be issues with the engine.

Mine is a 2016.. This thing is problem after problem... The AC has been a issue since we bought it in 2019. It takes like 10 minutes sometimes to blow cold air. We've had to replace the motor mounts...twice. It was leaking oil onto the exhaust and started smoking. We had to replace the battery , which I guess is fairly normal $700.Now one of our halo lights has gone out (driver side) and we were quoted $3500 from BMW. Also, the rear air suspension has decided it wants to go out on us too.. Occasionally i walk out to the vehicle and the back end is totally squatted, all the air has left and it rides terribly rough. If i plug it back it the air ride lifts back up..... If I'm home and can plug it in.. This car sucks.

Took delivery of mine, that was built to order. Car has 59,000 miles on it. Problems have been only one, last year the aux 12volt battery reported half capacity and BMW replaced it for free. Oh, did have to replace the tires after 42,000 miles.

We've had so many problems with this car. Don't get me wrong, it drives great ... When it wants to, but it has given us the most trouble vs our other older and more economical vehicles. We've had problems with the back air suspensions just going out which leads to a terribly rough ride, chassis malfunction error messages and now a drivetrain malfunction which caused it the wheel to go stiff as I was driving it. We've had to take it into the shop twice just this month,$1700 plus the 1st visit and the problem did not get fixed so it's back in the shop... Now they're saying EME DC/DCconverters are to blame and it's going to cost a whopping $10k plus!!! It's only 7 years old!! Our older cars which are close to twenty years old now perform better than our x5. Bottomline, we are NOT holding on to this car and never owning another BMW again.

Writer of February 21 2022 Pat is lier or some one who hired by bmw to write good reviews for internet. 40e model was first produced in 2016. I brought my car to bmw dealership for battery. It cost me around 2k with dynastic. The service adviser told me there is an oil leak at an electric motor and turbo. Needs to remove transmission to find where the leak is. That cost me an extra $4565 plus tax. The mechanic finds out. Inside the electric motor, the flyweel came apart, damaging the transmission wall that makes cracked. It is manufacturer defects, but bmw dealers can not help with this problem. I checked with several other auto mechanic shops. No one can't help because bmw doesn't sell parts to anyone (electric motor with transmission). Long story short, (transmission and flywheel $14,728, Replace turbo $7061) total costs to fix $28,354+tax. Now, bmw dealers offer me $3500 to buy my car.

We've had similar problems. I purchased the vehicle in 2021 with 70K miles. Now 2 years later at 95K miles, the engine needs to be replaced. I change the oil regularly! Previously I had to replace brakes/rotors, rear suspension bags and air compressor, all new tires, one of the batteries, and now apparently the engine has catastrophic engine failure at 7 years old, 95K miles, and serviced regularly. BMW corporate is less than helpful.. And in fact downright rude. I will never purchase from BMW again.

The car is a total failure. I personally know a few owners of this model that have similar problems too. With 70000 km the car started to have problems it took bmw 4 months to resolve it by changing the entire hybrid system. With the great assistance of the dealer the reparation was done on bmw expense’s. Today the car has 115000 km and same problems emerged again. I wander how much will the reparation cost this time. I’m not willing to keep the car any longer and I don’t know if I can trust bmw again
