By far, the most common catalytic converter problem, in the INFINITI G37 and other vehicles, is an obstruction in the internal workings. This is most often caused by a melting of the rare earth metals inside when the exhaust becomes overheated. The main reason for overheating is the failure of an upstream or downstream oxygen sensor, which will typically throw you a diagnostic trouble code. The bad news is this typically necessitates total replacement of the catalytic converter, and those do not come cheap; you can expect to pay upwards of $1,000 for a new converter, and another $150 to $200 if you want to have it professionally installed. If you see an oxygen sensor DTC, it's best to get it replaced right away before it leads to a more costly repair.
