Although there have been numerous issues reported by drivers about stretched timing chains on the Chevrolet Traverse (particularly model years 2009 througH2013), there has been no General Motors recall covering these parts. One can typically expect a timing chain to last for between 250,000 and 300,000 miles -- often exceeding the lifetime of a vehicle. However, many drivers have reported that their Traverse timing chains have failed between 70,000 and 120,000 miles. This sounds problematic, but it hasn't been enough to prompt GM to take any action. At this point, it's probably futile to expect any further action on a decade old vehicle; it's important to note that it's almost certain that the vehicles are now out of warranty. It's unfortunate, but it seems to be the way the cookie crumbled.

This is an old issue that GM hasn't been able to fix effectively. GM is just passing the buck to the customer. My vehicle manufactured in Sept2009, experienced "timing malfunction code P0008" and it was also timing chain/sprocket/guide/tensioner system, experienced at 110,275 miles. Special coverages existed, but the manufacturing date was not applicable to my vehicle because it was "not in GM suspect population". GM must have implemented corrective action and ruled out everything else, but if you look at the objective evidence it is clear that the corrective action was not effective and/or they didn't properly contain the population. Our voice(s) are not loud enough, singularly, to make a difference and that is exactly how GM will squelch this issue out. At best, you will be directed to work with your local dealer and they "might" do something for you on a case by case basis, but that is all in support of keeping the collective voices muted. My claim was (and still is) that GM "didn't properly contain and/or didn't effectively fix the timing system issue defined per Customer Service Plans, CSP10287 (reprogrammed oil life monitor) and CSP11340 (repair condition if found)". Sorry GM, but it is really sad to look here and see your same behavior of "passing the buck" to the customer on vehicles in 2012 as well. This is exactly why I will never ever ever ever, own a GM product again. It is true for my family as well. This GM vehicle has so many issues in 2010. My friends and family will hear about this for years to come. From the hundreds of forums I've read, it seems folks with the best luck are changing their oil at much tighter intervals than the service bulletin recommendations (personally, I now go about 4,000 miles, whereas your OLM will allow much higher than that). Keep in mind, GM "reprogrammed the oil life monitor" as at least 1 corrective action for the population of vehicles, meaning, they recognized the sensitivity of the system/design. It wasn't effective enough though. This is really sad to see this going on with a 2012 vehicle.

All, we have a 2010 Chevy Traverse LTZ we bought in 2011 which we loved. But at 100,000 the timing chains needed replaced which the dealership did for us and called it a one time customer appreciation deal which was much appreciated. Then again at 180,000 chains need replaced again. And now the vehicle value is less than the repair cost we have taken very good, So now what to do with a vehicle that is in great shape but doesn’t run. I would buy another Chevy from this dealership because of their customer service but will do a lot more research first. To to all who have the chains replaced beware of future issues, possibly ask the repair shop if there is something else to be done to avoid future issues. Hope this helps someone.

Hi hello everyone… ! The Chevrolet Traverse’s Family…! This car it’s really nice car but this the timing chain problem make this car miserable because the big problem is when the Timing Chain is gone for sure all your valves will be bends be cause of the type of the timing range, I mean if you just Open the cover and change the the CHAIN without change the valves definitely you will waste your time cause this car will not start… Right now I working on 2 of then in my Garage… But honestly the real problem it’s never the Timing Chain by himself but the Tansioners in the right side One close the OIL Pomp and the other one is the heard cylinder both are in Right side… they have a small spring inside them when this spring get stock the chain is coming loose and the timing is out of control and not line up and BOOM the engine will stops working… that’s why I can tell you the chain still good but when you buying the kit you get all inside… But if you need more idea you can contact me and let’s talk about your traverse and other cars… ILOVE MECHANIC I LIKE Ttaverse

A big thing we've seen a lot of over the past year or so, on the chevrolet traverse, saturn outlook, gmc acadia, and buick enclave, timing chain issues. All of these suv's are fitted with the 3.6 Liter v6 engine with dual cams. What is happening on these vehicles is the stretching of the timing chains which leads to errors in connection with the cam sensors and actuators.

My 2012 Traverse needed the timing chain replaced at 98k. Haven't heard anything yet on a recall but it would be nice to get a chunk of that $3200 back in my pocket!

So, Diego, do you know if they were repairing these under warranty?

2012 traverse 103.326 mls. Code, P0011; timing, actuator, camshaft should fall under powertrain warranty if it's not outdated, (too far outdated or over the mileage). All complaints go to GM, we called our warranty, powertrain is slightly under 3,000 MI at recent expiration GM to honor repair instead of coming out of pocket of $3,500. Cost should not be put off to the consumer! More complaints will push for a recall covering this repair.

Yesterday my truck was sputtering on my way home from work so I had it towed to my dealership…the diagnosis is the timing chain. My father purchased the Traverse in 2010 it’s a 2011 brand new and today the mileage is only 84,000 miles! GM needs a class action lawsuit filed against them.

My 2012 Traverse is currently in the shop getting a Jasper engine. 98,280 miles. My mechanic says the timing chain failure for these older Traverses is a WHEN not an IF situation. My car is in excellent condition and this is the first major issue it has had....but what a way to go!!! Clankity Clank.. So much cheaper to get an engine vs a new car. I'm not upset with the cost of the engine so much as the cost for the rental until it's fixed!!!!!

I have a 2012 Traverse with the 3.6L engine and 120K on the clock. I have had ZERO issues with the timing chain and other components of the motor. Probably because I've taken meticulous care of it since new?

I have a 2014 Traverse that has 120K miles on it and also needs a timing chain. I tried to get local businesses to do the work so it would be cheaper, but no one wants to touch it. Chevy Service is asking for $5,200 to complete the job. That seems high based on the other comments I've read.

Oh my God I feel like I got. With this 2014 Chevy Traverse I only had it one month and now it needs a timing chain I am so afraid to take it on the road with my family I know or I hope I won't have any problems what is the first thing to do when you buy a used car and I bought an extended warranty and they only want to pay a portion

We owned a 2011 Traverse, timing Chains went bad just over 110,000 miles. Chevy dealership told us it would be a $3500 overhaul of the motor and still no guarantee the motor wouldn’t blow up.
