In all models and model years of the Hyundai Elantra, the required fuel type is regular unleaded gasoline with an octane of 87 or higher. While "higher" will technically work, research indicates that there is no advantage to using premium fuel in an engine whose compression ratio does not call for it -- the Elantra's does not. With that said, Hyundai does not manufacture any vehicles (as of this writing) that are Flex Fuel enabled, so You won't want to use anything like E85 either. For the best performance and the best price, You'll need to stick with regular unleaded 87 all around -- anything lower can cause engine knocking and damage, and anything higher is the long way to throwing Your money away.

Uhhh, yeah about the higher octane not making a difference. I thought you may have been incorrect with your answer and seems as though you are incorrect. I normally use 87 octane gas in my Elantra but I thought to myself the only way to truly find out if 93 octane gas makes a difference in my Elantra was to try it. It 100% made a big difference. I immediately got more power and my automatic transmission seems to change gears faster. I know the gas has nothing to do with a transmission but it just felt "snappier"...I hope this help anyone reading this.

Fuel specifications for the hyundai elantra. Your new vehicle is designed to use only unleaded fuel with a pump octane ((r+m)/2) number of 87 (research octane number 91) or greater. Your new vehicle is equipped with unleaded fuel to achieve optimum efficiency, as well as reduce exhaust emissions and spark plug fouling.

Put premium in mine and she ran way better, efficiency has been so much better as the fuel gauge has barely moved over the last 45 miles, I’m sticking with premium from now on personally
