The 2005 Toyota Prius uses SAE 5W-30 engine oil and Toyota recommends that You use synthetic oil any time that You change it. Synthetic oil will give You better protection and lubrication for the components in Your engine. Oil comes in two main varieties, conventional and synthetic. Conventional is made with petroleum, and synthetic is engineered in a lab to give You superior performance and lifespan out of the oil. This means that You will need less frequent oil changes, usually only 7,500 miles compared to every 3,500 to 5,000 miles with conventional. I recommend checking the oil in Your car at least once a month to make sure that it is full and free from signs of burning or debris.

Why does my Toyota dealer only use conventional oil in my 2005 Priuses if synthetic oil is recommended then?

Your Toyota dealer is cheap, that's why. Unless the oil change is included free of charge, never ever never have the "stealership" change your oil.
