It's recommended that when You go and purchase an oil product that it meets GM Standards and that it has an API sticker. Now let's say You live in an area where the temperature gets lower than -20 F, then You should use SAW 0W-30. The purpose of the oil in Your motor is to clean it and keep it lubricated. For those reasons alone, You should always make sure that the level is where it should be.

Chevy recommends using SAE 5W-30 engine oil for the 2010 Malibu. If the temperature falls below -20 F, you can use SAE 0W-30 oil in order to help with cold starts. No other viscosity grade oil is recommended.
