There are three distinct engines offered on the 2016 Volkswagen Passat. The first two are each different variants of the 1.8 liter turbocharged 4Cylinder, and finally we have the 3.6L 6 cylinder. Each of these requireS5.8 quarts of SAE 5W-30 full synthetic oil, meeting the Volkswagen oil quality standard. In its absence, You can substitute SAE 5W-40 for the short term. The use of higher viscosity oil in the long term is not recommended, because of the friction that it introduces to Your engine. This can, over time, cause premature engine wear and tear, which will eventually lead to an early engine death. While it may be a few dollars more per oil change, it's always recommended that You use the manufacturer's specified oil with the lowest numbers in its weight, as these will be the thinnest.

How about 0W-40? I am using this one. My friend mechanic told me that should be also good.
