The recommended oil type for the 2008 BMW 535XI is a BMW high performance synthetic oil or an equivalent that meets BMW standards. The viscosity grade that You choose depends on the climate and conditions in the area You normally drive. In warmer climates and SAE grade of 5W-40 is preferred and in cooler climateS5W-30. The 5W40 oil is a little more viscous and will stick to the internal engine components better in warmer climates. The 5W30 is thinner and will allow the oil to spread around the engine easier when it is cold. You should check the engine oil level often, it's a good idea to get in the habit of checking it every time You put gas in the tank.
