The 2011 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 5.7L hemi V8 engine uses SAE 5W-20 oil, and it takeS7 quarts to completely fill. Dodge recommends that You use full synthetic oil whenever You need to change it. Oil comes in two major varieties, conventional and synthetic. Conventional is an older technology that uses petroleum, and synthetic is newer and engineered using chemicals to give better protection for the moving components. Synthetic also lasts longer, meaning You will only need to change it every 7,500 miles compared to conventional that needs to be changed every 3,500 to 5,000 miles. I recommend that You check Your oil at least once a month to make sure that it is full and free from damage.

Right from the owners manual "Use API certified SAE 5W-20 Engine Oil, meeting the requirements of Chrysler Material Standard MS-6395. Refer to your engine oil filler cap for correct SAE grade." In the same manual it says "You may use synthetic engine oils if the recommended oil quality requirements are met and the recommended maintenance intervals for oil and filter changes are followed." That means that you can use conventional oil, synthetic is acceptable but is not the recommended oil as earlier stated. Again this is straight from the 2011 RAM truck owners manual.
