The 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML350 comes in three different engine configurations, each takeng a varying type and capacity of oil. The 3.0L 6 cylinder turbo diesel will quire 8.5 quarts of SAE 0W-30 full synthetic motor oil, whereas the two 3.5L 6 cylinder variants (gasoline and Flex Fuel) each require 7.4 quarts of SAE 0W-40. While the turbo diesel should not take substitutions, the 3.5L engines offer You a wide freedom of choice for what to use. In those 3.5L variants, You can use any 5W engine oil above --13 degrees. Above -4, You'll also be able to use the 10Ws. At 5 degrees, You can expand use to 15W, and above 23 degrees You can use 20W. Therefore, if You live in a warmer climate, it's a real possibility that You may end up using a different oil to save a bit of change.

The information Nick B. Gave is correct and it is stated very clearly in the owner's manual. You may use many different types of oil depending on your climate.
