The 2014 VW Passat TDI holdS5.8 quarts of SAE 5W-30 engine oil. Volkswagen recommends that You use synthetic oil whenever You need to change it. There are two types of oil that are on the market these days, synthetic and conventional. Synthetic is newer and engineered to give You greater protection and longer life than the petroleum-based conventional option. This means with synthetic You should only need changes every 7,500 miles compared to 3,500 to 5,000 miles with conventional. I recommend that You check Your oil monthly. In this check You will need to make sure that Your oil is full and free from any signs of debris. If the oil is too dark it can be an indication that there is burning as well and it will need to be replaced.

A 2014 passat, assuming you have a 2L TDI only takes 4.5 Quarts. The 3.6L V6 takes 5.7 BUT it's not a diesel so the other answers are both incorrect and irrelevant.
