The 2018 VW Passat 2 0 t oil type is 0w-20. Having high quality oil is important for the engine to run smoothly. You will run into problems with the oil at some point. Old or bad oil can cause the engine to stop working. Knocking noise may come about from the engine. You could experience terrible gas mileage. A common problem is an awful burning odor. This needs to be viewed closely as soon as possible or the car might explode. Your oil needs to be changed out someday. Every 5,000 to 10,000 miles or so is a good rule of thumb. If You don't replace it, there will be problems with the engine.

Oil type according to my VW dealer is 0w-20. However the manual doesn’t mention that type anywhere, which is odd. Go to the dealer for an oily change if unsure, especially under a warranty.

0w-20 spec 508 is the specified oil on the engine oil data tag in the engine compartment. However, the owners manual states the car was shipped with 5W-30(I suppose for diesel engines)or 5W-40(gasoline engine). I was also told by a VW dealership mechanic and an Independent VW specialist that they both own at least 3 VW's 2.0t engines and they switched to running from the spec oil 0W-20 to 5W-40. They told me the 0W-20 is too thin and does not provide enough protection. I tried the 5W-40 in my engine and on very cold days would get a klanging noise on cold start ups which would go away after a minute. No doubt caused by the thicker oil. Scared me to death so I switched back to 0W-20. The independent VW specialist said the 0W-20 oil is causing metal glitter in oil pan and VW has halted 2.0T engine builds due to this problem. Have not been able to independently verify this however. He also said all these 2.0T engine problems started when they switched to 0W-20 to increase fleet mpg and better emissions. So now use 0w-20 and risk catastrophic engine damage or 5W-40 and risk oil starvation to certain engine areas during cold starts. What to do??????
