The Jeep Patriot uses SAE 5W-20 motor oil. Jeep recommends that You use a full synthetic motor oil when You need to change it. There are two main varieties of oil, synthetic and conventional. Synthetic is engineered in a lab to provide superior protection compared to the standard conventional which is petroleum based. Synthetic can also last longer meaning that You can go 7,500 miles between changes compared to 3,500 to 5,000 miles with conventional. Be sure to check Your oil at least once a month to make sure that it is filled all the way and free from any debris or signs of burning because those could permanently damage Your engine.
