Contrary to what some others here have said, the 1.8L variant of the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic houses the fuel filter inside of the gas tank. Therefore, it's not an inline filter, it won't be found on the body of Your car (or on a fuel line that's easily accessible), and it's not serviceable without dropping the entire fuel tank. Dropping the fuel tank is quite the task -- most Chevy Sonic owners would rather just pass it off to a certified mechanic. If You're looking to do a swap Yourself, just know that You're in for plenty of work -- You'll need some serious equipment to consider doing this on Your own. Hopefully, if You do decide to go that route, You stay safe!

This is located between the fuel tank and the engine, look for the cylinder running along the bottom of the car.
