The cause of a Ford Explorer coolant leak is largely dependent on the location of the leak. You may have something as simple as a split coolant line, or something as costly as a defective head gasket. If the coolant is found underneath Your vehicle (and not in the engine oil), You're likely looking at an issue with the radiator or the water pump, as these are known to fail. While it's technically possible to "plug" a radiator leak with an aftermarket "stop leak" type product, it's recommended that You patch it up properly to ensure normal operation. A water pump replacement is a fairly common and routine procedure; You can pick up a replacement for around $100, but takeng it to a mechanic to have the job done professionally will add another $100 to $200 on top of that.

The Ford Explorer is notorious for water pump failures. If the leak is coming from somewhere above the air conditioning compressor and the alternator on the belt side (passenger side) of the engine block, you most likely have a bad water pump. The answer by Nick B is correct for almost every other vehicle EXCEPT the Ford Explorer. Whereas most vehicles have easy to access water pumps for a quick $200 repair, the Ford Explorer water pump is driven by the timing chain inside the engine. You’re looking at $2000-$4000 for the repair. There are class action lawsuits against Ford (that I would encourage you to join) due to this insane engineering flaw.

2017 Police Interceptor Utility.. Coolant leak inside front right tire.. Was the rear climate control plastic valve, it was cracked...only leaked when rear heat was turned on. 225,000 miles water pump still good.. Change your coolant every 3 years or 60,000 and the water pump gasket seal will not deteriorate.
