The most common cause of a fuel gauge not working in a 2002 Chevy Avalanche is a faulty sending unit. The fuel gauge work off of electrical current sent from the fuel level sensor, which is integrated into the sending unit. When this electrical signal is interrupted the fuel gauge wont work or will give an improper reading. Another cause is if the float or float arm gets damaged or bent when installing a new fuel pump. If the float arm is bent, it will either say the fuel level is either higher or lower than what is actually in the tank or become stuck and the gauge will remain in one spot. The tank would need to be dropped in order to remove the sending unit.

The fuel gauge not working on your 2002 chevy avalanche is usually caused by a bad fuse, or a bad float or sending unit. Try the fuse first.
