Alex Showalter
Oct 26, 2023

The 2020 Buick Encore lasts around 200,000 miles, with some relatively minor wheel bearing and windshield issues reported. At $17,250 to $25,998, it’s a good value for a small SUV with a relatively nice interior for the money.

likeFilled The Good
The suspension is smooth on rough roads, the cabin has a lot of upscale materials and the stereo system has excellent technology.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The engine is very slow for an SUV, cargo space is limited behind the seats and the advanced safety features are only found on the most expensive models.

The base model had leather trim on seats.
The base model Buick encore feels safe, solid, and easy to drive. The body is sleek, modern, and an upgrade from years past. It is similar in body to Honda hrv, ford escape, and Chevy trax. My only complaint is the partnership with XM radio, and the constant calls to enroll but that may be with every car now a days.

Buick stepped up their game.
I have no problems with this vehicle. I have driven it on three long trips and it is very comfortable and easy to drive. It is very quiet on the highway and acceleration is good. The automatic tailgate and heated seats are a must-have. I especially like all of the driver assist features.
accountCircle Kimber D
Great smaller SUV with a luxury feel.
No problems with this vehicle for me, but others have stated the interior is small. Very comfortable and easy ride. Leather seats. The vehicle feels like a luxury vehicle. Gas usage is good as well. The trunk/hatchback is on the small side, but the back seats push down so you can carry a lot of in the hatch. The only problem I really ever had is in the winter with the windshield wipers. The ice tends to jam in the well under the wipers and freezes the mechanism that allows them to work. I have had to open the hood and completely clean out the ice build up a few times. Buick is actually aware of this issue and my local dealership has also heard about it.

My encore is the best ever.
Drives well. Good gas mileage, roomy interior, has take off power. Good deal on it. Lights are very cool. Custom floor mats are really nice. Handles bad rainy weather well. Instrument panel is nice and very easy to see. Modern cool styling. Steering wheel handles well.

Buick enclave 2020 review.
It is pretty comfortable. The seat warmers are very lovely and there’s many handy features that this car has. The bluetooth is great and you can make calls from the car and the sound is crystal clear. Also you brights automatically turn off when a car is coming. There’s a back up camera and a little rack in the back of the car for bread and fragile groceries. Somethings I do not like are how not good of quality the back up camera is. It is like a 2007 samsung flip phone quality. And the breaks and gas are really sensitive. But other than all of that the car is great! It also has a beeper that goes off when you get too close to something. It is very safe and reliable and has plenty of storage. It is also very comfortable! Highly recommend.

Buick encore gx is a must buy vehicle.
I love it! I love the way it drives and rides. There’s been some errors with the computer system but with a quick update at the dealer it was fixed and back up and running. The seats are beyond comfortable and I love that the car has so much space for such a small car.

Luxury in a small package.
I have never regretted buying my Buick encore. It has all the bells and whistles I could want, without breaking the bank. The ride is so smooth and passengers often comment on the ride as well as the level of luxury this little car has. I drive up to 60,000 miles a year for work, so have spent plenty of time in “Cory”. If pressed to come up with shortfalls, I’d have to say the mileage and the size of the gas tank cause me to be filling quite often. However, those few issues will not stop me from buying another one.

Powerful car for its size.
My Buick encore has a lot of power for its size and accelerates at a quick rate while merging on the highway which was my biggest fear for such a small car. Only complaint, the windshield wipers do not move fast enough to clear rain from a strong rainstorm.

Most comfortable car I have owned.
It is very reliable and comfortable. I am very happy with the miles per gallon that I am getting considering I do a lot of driving for work and personal use. The trunk will always fit everything that I need and all passengers in the car are typically comfortable with space.

What Common Problems Does the 2020 Buick Encore Have?

Common problems found on the 2020 Buick Encore include excessive wheel noise, broken windshields, along with some stereo system issues. Overall, the problems are relatively minor compared to other small SUVs, leading to lower repair costs than many of the competitors.

Excessive wheel noise is the most widespread complaint on the 2020 Buick Encore, showing up at around 20,000 miles. The wheel bearings are a known weak spot on the SUV, and they have to be replaced. Changing out the bearings costs around $250, depending on local labor rates.

Broken windshields have also been mentioned by some 2020 Encore owners within the first 5,000 miles. There are some production runs of glass, which are weaker, and cause the glass to break with smaller chips. Replacing the windshield costs around $550.

Stereo system issues show up on some 2020 Buick Encore models at around 1,000 miles. Usually, the stereo system freezes up and has to be restarted to get it working again. There are software updates available for the stereo system, which improves its reliability. Most dealers will update the stereo for free, while others charge around $50.

There are two recalls on the 2020 Buick Encore, which is better than some other small SUVs. The most serious recall includes missing bolts on the start/stop accumulator, which Buick will replace for free. The other recall includes the front seat bolts missing, which Buick will also install for free.

How Long Will the 2020 Buick Encore Last?

A well-maintained 2020 Buick Encore can last around 200,000 miles, which is shorter than some other small SUVs like the Toyota RAV4. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other compact SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $456 per year.

As a used 2020 Encore reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history report, owners should be prepared to replace the MAP sensor for $100, the A/C drier assembly costing $255, along with brake vacuum pump, which costs $325.

How Is the Technology?

The standard entertainment technology is excellent and includes a relatively large 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Optional upgrades include a more powerful stereo system.

Standard safety technology is fairly basic, and only features a rearview camera.

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Lane departure warning
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Forward collision warning
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers

The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $17,250 to $25,998, making it less than a Subaru Forester or Honda CR-V. When new, the price range was $23,200 to $30,800. Depreciation is similar to some other SUVs, losing about 7% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Buick Encore?

What Engines Come In the Buick Encore?

The 2020 Buick Encore is powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that generates 138 horsepower. This engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. When it comes to performance, the Encore’s 0-60 MPH time is estimated at around 9 seconds. As for fuel efficiency, the combined fuel economy for this powertrain stands at around 27 MPG, offering a balance between performance and economy for its class.

What Colors Does the Buick Encore Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Buick Encore?

The 2020 Buick Encore is often praised for its comfort-oriented features, making it a compelling choice in the compact SUV segment. Inside the cabin, passengers are greeted with well-padded seats that provide ample support for both short jaunts and longer journeys. The front seats, in particular, offer a good range of adjustability to accommodate various body types.

Buick’s emphasis on a quiet ride is clear in the Encore, which benefits from the brand’s QuietTuning technology — a suite of acoustic treatments that aim to minimize road, wind, and engine noise. This results in a serene cabin environment, allowing passengers to converse easily or enjoy their music without much external interference.

How Much Storage Space Does the Buick Encore Have?

The 2020 Buick Encore is a compact SUV that offers versatility in its storage solutions. With its rear seats in place, the Encore provides about 18.8 cubic feet of cargo space. This is enough room for a few suitcases, a week’s worth of groceries, or a couple of sets of golf clubs.

When more space is needed, the rear seats can be folded down to expand the cargo area to about 48.4 cubic feet. This larger space can accommodate larger items such as a bicycle, larger pieces of furniture, or a significant amount of camping equipment. Aside from the main cargo area, the Encore is equipped with various small storage nooks and pockets throughout its cabin. There’s a glovebox, door bins, and center console storage, which can be handy for keeping smaller items organized and within easy reach. Whether you’re heading out for a weekend getaway or just running everyday errands, the 2020 Buick Encore offers ample storage solutions to fit your needs.

VehicleHistory Image

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The first generation of the Buick Encore was launched for the 2013 model year.

2015: OnStar with 4G LTE connectivity is now standard on all models.

2016: Sport model introduced with a stronger four cylinder engine.

2017: Minor front-end styling changes, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto offered, also some upgraded interior materials.

2018: No major changes from earlier years.

2019: Stronger optional engine offered.

2020: Small changes to the Sport Touring model, and the more powerful engine was discontinued.

2021: More driver safety aids added.

How Does the Buick Encore Compare to the Competition?

The 2020 Buick Encore is a nice small SUV, offering decent value for shoppers on a budget that are looking for some luxury paired with a practical small cabin.

The Chevy Trax is another small SUV which costs about $2,500 less. Both the Chevy Trax and the Buick Encore are built on the same platform, but the Buick Encore has a better interior along with more technology. We recommend the Buick Encore since it’s a more complete package, worth the extra money.

The Honda HR-V is a popular competitor, which can be found for about $2,000 more. Long-term ownership costs are lower on the Honda HR-V, while the Buick Encore offers a nicer interior. We recommend the Honda HR-V since it’s a bit more reliable, although both are worth testing to see which you prefer.

Perfect size, look, and comfort.
I had been wanting a Buick encore for about 2-3 years. I always noticed them when I passed one. I love the look and body style. It is so comfortable to drive and feels like a luxury car after what I have driven before. It is the perfect size to commute to work and entertain my grandson on the weekend. I have only had it for 2 months and it is already had multiple sensor issues. It is covered still under bumper to bumper warranty but it is still a bit concerning that it is a brand new vehicle with issues. Safety and style in the 2020 Buick.
My Buick encore has such a smooth ride you feel like you are driving on air! The safety features are why I purchased the car because it has lane shift detection and collision detection that beeps and lights up when I am drifting or going too fast compared to the cars in front of me. I feel so safe when I drive my new Buick.

Love the sunroof and his easy it is to park because it is small. Also love the blue color. I upgraded to a encore that has the protection when you are backing up or changing lanes since this far has a blind spot. Which my last encore didn’t have and I hit a car in a parking lot.

This SUV is perfect! It has third row seating and it is very spacious. All of the features are amazing such as keyless start, Sirius XM, heated seats, aux plugs in front and back, DVD player, 3 phone charger plugs. Front side window tint is a little too dark
I leased a 2020 Buick Encore GX Essence FWD, does anyone else notice the front side windows are tinted too dark? When I drove in evening I could barely see out the side mirrors and had to roll the window down to even see where my street was when i turned off a main road to go home. That will be inconvenient in the winter when you have to roll the window down to see where you are turning at night time?

Buick encore. I love it!
It is a very smooth ride. The back up camera helps when backing up. The seats are heated. I can start the car and have it warmed up from inside the house. I wish I could turn on the seats from inside the house. But the car is warm so waiting the 30 seconds for the seats to warm up is no big deal.

My review of Buick encore.
So far it has been an amazing vehicle. It rides very smooth even when bumpy. Amazing on gas. Takes $21.03 in Oklahoma typically to fill it up. My only complaint is that I wish there was a little bit more trunk space. Just a little. Granted, we weren't looking for something for hauling so it wasn’t a top priority.
accountCircle Collette B on October 4, 2020
Interior is a wow! Safety features and performance plus.
It gets great gas mileage and the self driving feature is amazing. It is very luxurious on the inside. Kind of like a landrover feel interior. Someone, the digital dash on the inside tends to be very slow in getting info when first starting vehicle and the Bluetooth didn't always connect phone. That had to be part of the frustration when starting to drive. The 'hud' or heads up display is a really great information feature that helps work safe driving.

Bad tires for a brand new vehicle.
So far it is a good vehicle. Only problem I have come across is the front tires are almost worn out at 7000 miles. Back tires are still like brand new. Will be rotating at first oil change but the tires will be worn again and are basically just junk. Plan on putting new tires on soon.

2020 black Buick encore with shimmering sparkles in paint.
I absolutely love my Buick encore! I have the black and it has sparkles in the paint and the outside of the car is absolutely gorgeous! I am in love with the look. The inside is perfect as well. I really like my touch screen, back up camera, and Bluetooth. My seats are partially leather and partially cloth, I do wish that they were completely leather so that they would be heated seats. My seats are very comfortable though. As a younger person I was kind of not about the idea of a Buick but I fell in love with the look, inside and out. It has plenty of room in the trunk, but the backseat isn't for tall people. I would say this car is for older people or female young adults who are on the shorter side. It just isn't really made for the tall people. All around I love my car and I am so glad I chose a Buick encore.

There is a lot of extra storage space for everything you need to carry with you. The car is also very technological. It has OnStar assist, and backup cameras, both of which are very useful to the average driver. Lastly, the Buick encore is a great deal for the price. They have everything a driver would need or want in a car for a very reasonable price.

The seats are so nice and no problems yet.
I don't really have any problems because it's a new car and I do not use much because of the corona virus and I do not use it as much as I thought I would because I want to stay safe of course and stay inside, so I cannot write any problems I had if I did not encounter any yet.

The car is super compatible and has many features to it.
The encore is a super nice vehicle if you are looking for a smaller car. It has many features and is incredibly comfy! I bought one for my 15 year old and she loves it too. We haven't had a problem with it at all so far! I would definitely recommend this car for anyone!

Awesome smaller SUV with lots of room, fitted rubber mats and drives smoothly.
This is my second time leasing a Buick encore. Its rides really nice, Bluetooth works flawlessly. I am really liking the rubber fitted mats, helps with easy clean up. Drives good in the winter months. I would recommend this vehicle to anyone who is looking for a smaller SUV.

It is an encore, name speaks for itself.
I have had no problems so far with my car. I love to drive, it handles great and holds the road. I can adjust the seating to my liking with just pushing a button. It has adjustable side mirrors from the drivers door panel. It has a backup mirror. It will tell me if I get too close to a car.

Buick encore AWD review and details.
It is a nice car, it rides good and you are riding a little higher off the ground. I have the 4 cylinder which can be a little slow when accelerating in traffic. There is not a lot of room in the back for things like golf clubs or anything with a little size. It is all wheel drive which is nice in the winter and it does drive good in the slow.
