2009 Ford Escape Review: A Compact SUV Buyers Should Avoid With Mechanical Problems

Alex Showalter
Jun 11, 2022

The 2009 Escape lasts around 150,000 miles with transmission and power steering failures. At $5,162 – 6,470, it’s not worth the money for an SUV that breaks down a lot.

likeFilled The Good
The interior is comfortable, engines offer good performance, and the SYNC infotainment system works well.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Braking distances are very long, interior materials are cheap and the suspension is not as smooth as its rivals.

Is the 2009 Ford Escape a Good Used SUV?

  • No, 2009 is a bad year for the Escape. Owner reviews complain about endless mechanical problems, excessive rust, and a harsh ride.
  • Reliability ratings are terrible. There are a lot of serious problems on Escape models from 2008 through 2014.
  • Performance is average from the 4-cylinder, but the V6 has good power for a compact SUV.
  • The Escape is reasonably safe, getting 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests.
  • Fuel economy is good, at up to 24 MPG combined.

It's the perfect size and style for a young adult or small family.
I like the way it drives. The car rides smooth, it feels safe, and it is a perfect size for me. I feel like I've had to do quite a few repairs on the car for the age and milage on the vehicle. All in all though, I love the car.

Like the room and capacity. Styling is nice. No real dislikes

I love it. It is almost perfect. The cargo area could be just a little bigger.
Not too big and not too small. Just the right size for most of things I do. No way to keep bugs out when windows are open.

It gets great mileage, has storage room but not to big.

Never had a real issue with it and I've had it for almost 10 years. Runs great!! I suspect I can get a couple more years out of it as well.
Like the size - roomier than a car but also compact. Love how it drives and handles, good on gas. No complaints!

Ford escape: practical car.
The ford escape is incredibly reliable and sturdy car to meet all of my needs. I live in New England where the weather can be unpredictable, and the escape gives me the opportunity to go about my day without any worries about the car having trouble getting through rain or snow. It drives comfortably and is a very practical car. With over 150,000 miles on it I have been forced to get some maintenance work done on the car, but because it is a ford it is always easy to get it take care of.
accountCircle Sharon B
Love driving the Escape! Roomy, comfortable and dependable.
I love that it sits up higher so that I am better able to see things around me (and around the snowbanks in the winter). I love the four-wheel drive for the wisconsin winters. I love the cargo space and all the room - and the roomy back seat area. What I do not like is that it takes two hands to open the liftgate - one to press the release button and the other to "help" the lift raise.

My 2009 escape has been good so far. I bought the car used 3 years ago with 120,000 kms on it. I was just told that the subframe is rusted badly needs to be replaced. I have found out that there is a recall for the problem. However after almost four hours of the complete runaround by ford I have found out there is a recall for this SAFTEY issue. But it depends on where it was made. Like I said my problem is a badly rusted subframe that is not covered by this recall. Than you Ford this is the one and only time you will screw me and I hope a lot of people read this and buy other products.

Never buy this vehicle!!!!! Please!!!
My 2009 Ford Escape had many problems from the A/C, motor parts, and transmission failure within 18 months. The damage/fix cost was nearly the total of the vehile. The body & interior are great looking. HOWEVER the transmission is FLAWED and Ford knows it! I will NEVER buy Ford vehicles again! If you know what's good, RUN!

Long lasting vehicle if you are not someone who needs a new car often
It's older, but no major issues this far. Reliable and a nice rider. The only thing I dislike is that newer models have more features, but I have no need to trade since it runs great.

It is black runs horrible and that is a lot.
It is not meant to be driven a lot. I have run into a lot of problems that are expensive because I have over 120, 000 miles.

It is very useful and I cannot live without it.
It does not look good and have no light inside and the ac does not cool enough. It is old and need to be changed.

A good vehicle for hauling or traveling with pets.
It is not a very comfortable car, but it is useful for traveling with my dog. All features are standard so does not offer anything exciting to the driving experience. A very utilitarian vehicle.

What Do Critics Say About the Escape?

  • Consumer Reports says the Escape has an unsettled ride and below average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the Escape a 4.4/5 liking the comfortable interior, but says the folding seats are difficult to use.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the Escape 4.4/5 and enjoy the high ground clearance, but dislike the extensive mechanical problems.

What Common Problems Does the 2009 Ford Escape Have?

Problems found on the 2009 Escape are serious and include transmission failures, worn-out power steering systems, and bad throttle bodies.

Transmission failures are an extremely widespread problem happening in the first 50,000 miles, often. Replacing the transmission fixes the problem, but costs around $3,000.

Worn-out power steering motors are another common issue that shows up at around 100,000 miles.  Replacing the power steering assembly costs over $1,000, depending on local labor rates. There is a recall for some parts, but it doesn’t cover everything.

Throttle body failures show up on a lot of Escapes at around 70,000 miles too. The throttle body actuators get worn out, and cost around $500 to replace to get the engine working again.

There are 4 recalls, with the most serious one being for electronic power steering assistance.

How Long Will the 2009 Ford Escape Last?

A well maintained 2009 Escape should last around 150,000 miles, which is around 100,000 miles less than a top competitor like the Honda CR-V. Regular annual maintenance costs are higher than rivals, according to data from Repair Pal, at $541 per year.

accountCircle Brandon R

It is just now starting to have issues with the transmission. The transmission is slipping in the 3rd gear and the gas mileage is starting to lower.

accountCircle Emily S

The 2009 ford escape XLT is a very reliable car. I have not had very many problems with it and it does very well in the winter.

accountCircle Robert B

Yes. No major issues after 10 years, just normal lil things all cars have. Glad I bought it, would again.

accountCircle Maureen k

Yes very reliable. There seems to be a front end issue on the right side that affects the tire.I have had to replace tires a few times.

accountCircle Marni R

The ford escape is very reliable. I have had few problems with it over the past 5 years that I have owned it.

accountCircle Elizabeth C

Very. I have only had to have it serviced once since I got the car when I was 16. We had to replace the tire sensor pressure monitors, but that happens with any car that has got a little age on it.

accountCircle linda` B

It is reliable no problems at all, have not had to have any major work done on the one I have/ o definitely will consider buying another one.

accountCircle Andrea P

Yes the 2009 ford escape is pretty reliable, no known regular issues or anything to my knowledge. Great car to get around town and even to hop on the highway if needed.

How Much Is the 2009 Ford Escape Worth?

Blue book values range from $5,162 – 6,470, making it around $3,000 cheaper than a Toyota RAV4 or Jeep Commander. When new, the price range was $20,435 to $27,670. Depreciation is worse than average, losing about 15% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Escape?

There are three models of the Escape available. The infotainment system was last updated in 2008, with more safety features added in 2010.

XLS is the entry-level model with:

  • 16-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Cloth Seating

  • Cruise Control
  • 4-Speaker AM/FM/CD Stereo With 3.5mm AUX Jack

What Engines Come In the Escape?

  • The base engine found in the Escape is the average 2.5L 4-cylinder which makes 171 horsepower and gets up to 24 MPG combined.
  • An available upgrade is the more powerful 3L V6 which produces 240 horsepower while getting up to 21 MPG combined. Performance is okay, taking 8.7 seconds to go 0-60 MPH.

What Colors Does the Escape Come In?

How Big Is the Escape?

The 2009 is an average sized compact SUV similar to the Toyota RAV4 or Nissan Rogue. Both legroom and headroom are good throughout the cabin, and adults easily fit in the backseats.

Cargo space is smaller than some other SUVs with only 29 cubic feet of room behind the seats, increasing up to 66 when the seats are folded flat.

How Does the Escape Compare to the Competition?

The Ford Edge is another rival from Ford, which costs about $2,000 more. Passenger room is better on the Edge, but the Escape is more capable on off-road trails. We recommend the Edge since it will last longer and has fewer mechanical issues for 2009.

The Honda CR-V is a competitor which is about $3,000 more expensive. Technology and reliability are both better in the CR-V, but the exterior styling is more rugged in the Escape. We recommend the CR-V since it’s a better all-around SUV and lasts longer.

I love my 2009 manual transmission Ford Escape.
My odometer reading is 245,300 miles. I lived out in the country and had to drive approximately 35 miles work everyday. I've also driven a cross-country several times, without any problem at all. I bought it in 2011 it is now 2023. The problems I've had with it are basic problems that happen due to age, not because it's defective. I love this stick shift and I think that's why my transmission has never needed any work on it. Now I'm in the market for another one, I want to give this one to a niece or nephew or another kid that lives in the country that could use a vehicle to get them to and from school or their jobs. But where do you find another wonderful manual transmission Ford Escape that's not a special order? I've driven a manual transmission all my life. I'm 71. Dear Ford, please build a manual transmission Ford Escape. Please please please! I think Ford has made a mistake by not building manual transmissions as an option. Just saying.

Great car, with a couple of problems.
Purchase my 2009 Ford Escape in Nov. 2008. It currently has 116,000 miles. Had to replace power steering unit (entire lower steering unit @ $1350.00) at approx 100K miles. Replaced rear hatch door opener at about same time. Other than that, new tires at 72,000 and front brake shoes at 28k miles and again at approx 100k miles. Looks lie there is now a problem with the sunroof leaking. Could be just plugged up drains. Will check it out. Otherwise, the car runs great. Oil and filter change every 4k miles. Original seat material is lousy. White spots from any wetness. Dealer never notified me about that recall. Would definitely buy another Escape.

Other than the couple issues I mentioned, this vehicle is lovely and fun.
The only problems I have come across are ignition switch possibly as when I put the key in to turn on, I have to try several times, so I think maybe something in there needs replaced. Also there is a tire pressure sensor that has gone bad and it tells me every time I drive on a highway after about 20 mins.

Fun to Drive, reliable and economical, long-lasting
I love my car, it has leather seats, gets about 25 mpg, is responsive, is a 4 cylinder to save gas, and I can use it to haul almost anything I need to. I like the way it handles on the road, and is good in snow or on ice. The only thing I don't like is the chrome trim on the console and dash as it can create blinding reflections on sunny days, and the way the instrument cluster window is angled also produces a blinding reflection in the corners.

Needs rear vents, leather and more comfortable seats. Has great handling.
It drives nice, it is good size for a family vehicle, leather seats would be better because of kids, the front seats are not comfortable, and it would be nice to have air/heat vents in the back seat for the kids. The interior color is not great, maybe darker colored seats. Other than that it drives smooth, has nice handling, fast breaking, and seems like it would hold up fairly well in an accident.

2009 Ford Escape - A reliable A to B vehicle that is a pleasure to drive.
Our 2009 Ford Escape has been a great vehicle for our young family of three. It has shown itself to be reliable, easy to maintain, and, very importantly, safe. One feature that we have come to love since having our baby is the quick clip brackets for the baby's car seat base. We have gone on 10+ hour trips in this vehicle and remained comfortable throughout the entire trip. The few problems that we have encountered include a broken windshield wiper fluid pump and a worn out actuator on the rear lift gate. Parts for this vehicle are easy to find.
