2017 Ram Pickup Truck Review: Ram Pickup Delivers Power, Customization, and Superior Fuel Economy

Jan 25, 2022

Billed as ‘America’s longest-lasting pickup,’ the 2017 Ram is estimated to run smoothly for about 250k miles and up to 17 years, despite 10 recalls and reported problems with the cruise control. Its fuel-efficiency and longevity means you can expect to pay around $30k for a used model today.

Better fuel economy than the 2017 Ford F-150. Iconic Rambox storage system gives you somewhere to put your tools, or groceries.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Upgrades between the truck’s 10 trim levels are marginal. You’re paying extra without getting much out of the added cost. Technology features are adequate, but underwhelming for a 2017 with no upgrade package available.
checkCircleAlternativeBold The Bottom Line
The 2017 Ram goes toe-to-toe with the biggest names in the half-ton-pickup segment, with potent and efficient engine options, solid safety ratings, and enough trims to make your head spin. Whether you’re a Ford fan or a Chevy diehard, the 2017 Ram pickup is worth considering.

2017 Ram Pickup: Quick Overview

  • The 2017 Ram pickup introduced a host of tech upgrades to the truck, including an 8.4″ multimedia system and backup camera and parking sensors.
  • Despite 10 recalls, the truck maintains a low number of complaints on file with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), at just over 300, and a modest annual repair bill of around $568.
  • Three engines are offered: a 3.0L EcoDiesel for the long haul, a 3.6L PentaStar V6 for the daily driver, and a 5.7L Hemi V8 for the dedicated work truck.
  • Your mileage may vary based on your options, but a 3.6L gets 16/23 mpg city/highway, a 3.0L EcoDiesel averages 20/27, and a Hemi should do around 15/21.
  • The 2017 Ram 1500 has a safety rating of four (out of five) stars with the NHTSA, and mostly “Good” ratings with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), but no Top Safety Pick award.
  • Differences between the Ram, Tundra, Silverado, and F-150 are marginal enough that you may as well go with whatever you like. But the Ram’s superior fuel efficiency does make it the preferable daily driver.

Great truck for a second vehicle.
Great vehicle, everyone should have a second vehicle that is a ram, power for towing, carries a lot of weight, very nice inside comfortably and spacious. Strong and reliable, very pleased with this make and model. Like the size and the blacked out color. In the future black out the lug nuts too. Comfortable second row seats for our furry family members.

It is a great truck and does what I need it to do. You can haul things or romp in the mud it is up to you what you'd want to do.

It's a truck, so I like the fact that we can haul things without having to rent a truck or borrow one. I like the room that we have inside the truck. I like the way it drives, it's smooth and has good pick up if I need it.
That I didn't pay a fortune for it. You don't have to pay a lot for a decent truck

Great car! No major problems. Our truck is fairly new though.
No problems. We love our car. It is very comfortable and practical. We can go anywhere it is a very trustworthy vehicle. Sometimes we need a little more space but overall it is ok. We have gone far and about with the truck and have never had any problems. We do take good care of our truck.

Sleek looking, powerful, and durable.
This model/make truck drives extremely well and handles the road (particularly snow and ice) well. Good gas and highway mileage. Only issue is that my tailgate falls down - tailgate recall fixed issue. Comfortable seating, great sound system, and reliable. Even easy to change your tire yourself.

Cheap/faulty electronics
I have a 2017Ram Eco Diesel with less than 25000 miles - no accidents, garage kept. Recently had not only the radio but also the backup camera go bad. Very suspicious both electronics go out almost simultaneously. Contacted Chrysler customer service and was informed I could have bought extended warranty for electronics when I purchased the vehicle…. If I expect items to not even last this short a period of time I would not buy them… Shame on Fiat Chrysler for not standing behind their product. I will remember this when I purchase my next vehicle…

Bad quality, design and customer service
Poorly designed and bad quality, made to fail right after the warranty ends. I bought a new 2014 RAM 1500 Crew-cab Ecodiesel. The rust started to pop up on the hood from under the paint before 5 years, water is dripping into the cabin since new, one door not closing properly since new. DEF tank is so improperly designed that liquid will crystallize and block the level device. Dealer recommendation: replace the tank (DEF tank price: over $2400). You see a nice truck but the quality is very low, not worth the price. Customer service is biased, "out of warranty, we cannot help". Warranty is 60,000Km or 3 years like any poorly made car. If you did not have problems during warranty you will sure have right after. It is designed to fail. No wonder why Daimler left Chrysler.

Reliability
I purchased my 2017 Ram 1500 / 5.7 Hemi new. It has been well maintained and never abused. My passenger side head gasket failed at 71,000mi, causing irreparable damage to the motor. At $6500 for a new motor installed from the dealer, I now have a very nice lawn ornament.

I got 1 problem with this truck, apart from the fender flairs falling off.The navagation is just useless.90% of the time it does not understand a word you say, no matter how fast or slow you speak, even if you spell the words, it comes up with some address in lally land.If you try to type the address in ,it goes crazy altogether, example, if i try to type in 333 of an address, its already giveing me a whole different address after i type in just one 3, and will not let you type in further than one letter or number. Its the most annoying navagation system i ever encounted, A complete useless piece of junk. What Problems Does the 2017 Ram Pickup Have?

The 2017 Ram Pickup suffers from three major problems: potential rollaway when parked without the parking brake, transmission stall thanks to an issue in the powertrain control module, and poor build quality, with various issues like bolts in the exhaust manifold coming loose and door latches popping open.

VehicleHistory Image

There have been 10 recalls, with the most recent (and most worrying) launched in May 2018 over an issue with the cruise control failing to cancel in nearly five million Chrysler vehicles. The majority of the 2017 Ram 1500’s recalls are equally serious and include multiple recalls over both vehicle rollaway and a tailgate that may unexpectedly open. Additional recalls cover malfunctioning side curtain airbags that may rupture, and an intake manifold susceptible to potential combustion that can lead to a fire.

Despite its recalls, overall, the truck is less problematic than many full-size pickups, with fewer than 400 complaints across more than 500,000 units sold.

What are the Prices, Models, and Specs?

The 2017 Ram 1500 pickup truck debuted with a sticker price of around $42,900. Today, you can expect to find them for around $30,000, on average, with a five-year depreciation rate estimated at 46%, which is worse than others in its class.

Compared to its competition, the Ram’s depreciation value is higher than the Ford F-150 and Toyota Tacoma, which both reportedly depreciate by 39% after five years.

How Long Will the 2017 Ram Pickup Last?

Advertised as “America’s longest-lasting pickup,” the 2017 Ram is estimated to run for about 200,000 to 250,000 miles, with most making it 13-17 years before they become too costly to keep running.

You should expect to spend around $568 a year on repairs and maintenance, which is almost $100 cheaper than an F-150.

I haven't had any trouble with my truck I have owned for just over 2 years and this is my 2nd ram and would buy another if needed.

accountCircle Kev C

I have never had a problem. I choose this vehicle for its reliability. Having kids I needed something I could count on.

accountCircle Patrick B

My ram 1500 big horn is a super reliable truck. I have not had a single issue out of it since owning it for the past 17 months.

accountCircle j k

No problems yet except for the too many recalls. Easy oil changes and air filter changes and ample room to work on vehicle under the hood.

accountCircle Jennifer B

Yes. I have not had any problems with it yet. I would recommend this vehicle to someone else. Buy one today.

accountCircle Jessica G

It is reliable and I haven't come across any problems. There are always notifications if there is something that should be checked out.

accountCircle Mo A

accountCircle Whitney B

Haven't experienced any so far. Had almost a year. It has a lot of power and drives smooth. It's my first truck

What Technology and Safety Features are Included?

  • The Tradesman comes with a six-speaker audio system and AM/FM radio with a 3.5″ driver-information display.
  • The Big Horn adds Uconnect and Bluetooth, and the Rebel features an 8.4″ touchscreen. There are no technology packages, so you’ll have to take what the trim level offers.
  • All of the basic safety features, like electronic stability control and anti-lock brakes, are included. Rearview cameras are added in the Big Horn and up, and you’ll find ParkSense parking sensors in the Rebel and higher.

What Engine Options are Available?

With a full-size pickup, you expect a generous range of engine options. The 2017 Ram 1500 delivers with three distinct choices.

VehicleHistory Image

  • 3.0L EcoDiesel V6: Delivers 240 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque; estimated at 20/27 mpg, city/highway by the EPA. The EcoDiesel’s selling point is its 754-mile range. You can get from Washington to Florida with this engine on just three fill-ups.
  • 5.7L Hemi V8: Offers 395 horsepower, 410 lb.-ft. of torque, and an mpg estimate of 15/21 city/highway. This is the powerhouse, the workhorse. If you’re going to be pulling trailers full of lumber in a dedicated work truck, this is the one you want.
  • 3.6L Pentastar V6: Provides 305 horsepower and 269 lb.-ft. of torque at 16/23 mpg. This is your daily driver engine that is efficient and lean, but tough enough for the occasional tow job.

What Color Options are Available?

How Big is the 2017 Ram Pickup?

The Ram is offered with three box options (5’7″, 6’4″, and 8′) and three cabs:

  • Regular: Simple one-row work truck setup. Roomy for a couple of adults, but not a great family car.
  • Quad: Will seat two adults and three kids comfortably,
  • Crew: Comparable to a mid-size SUV with five comfortable, roomy seats.

VehicleHistory Image

All the boxes include the Rambox, which lets you tuck your tools safely into 8.5 cu. ft. of rainproof storage.

The beds are each 51 inches across on the inside, and 21 inches deep. The F-150 is a touch wider, but you won’t really notice the difference. And with the Rambox, you can carry the groceries no matter the weather without having to stack anything on a passenger seat.

How Does the 2017 Ram Pickup Compare to Other Full-size Pickups?

Comparing the 2017 Ram to its competition, the Ford F-150 remains America’s best-selling truck for over 40 years, and the 2017 model continued to innovate with a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine and all-new 10-speed automatic transmission. The combination delivers more torque and horsepower, and an improved driving experience.

Likewise, the 2017 Toyota Tundra debuted with more than four dozen possible configurations and a towing capacity of up to 10,500 pounds.

However, while the Ford F-150 comes with tons of options for maxing out your towing capacity, the 2017 Ram 1500’s EPA numbers look a bit better than those of the 2017 F-150 or Tundra,  making it the best of the three if you’re looking for a daily-driver, while still being more than powerful enough for typical work-truck duties.

Is the 2017 Ram Pickup a Good Truck?

Yes, the 2017 Ram 1500 is a good pickup truck. The tie-breaker between the Ram 1500 and the Ford F-150 may be the fuel economy. Also, the Rambox storage system has always been an awesome feature.

However, the Ram’s technology features, though adequate, are underwhelming for a 2017 model, and there are a lot of trim levels here that don’t really add anything to the overall package.

VehicleHistory Image

Overall, the 2017 Ram 1500 pickup truck illustrates why so many drivers swear by the brand. It’s undeniably a durable, reliable, affordable, and customizable full-size that can function as a daily driver or a dedicated hauler and tower.

Unbelievable Transmission Issue
I bought my 2017 Ram 1500, 3.7 L, used, with 27,000 miles on it. This is my third Ram and the first time I ran into a transmission issue. But at 107,000 miles I was just notified today that for the first time I ran into a transmission issue. But at 107,000 miles I was just notified today that I had an absolute 100% catastrophic transmission failure. Diagnosed at my local Dodge Dealership. In addition, my oil filter adapter has my truck leaking oil like a faucet. Don’t matter now. I owe $17,000 on it, over $8,000 repair bill and the truck is worth $7,000 as it sit. A $10,000 Loss. Devastating no matter how much I liked the truck. NO WARNING AT ALL.

2017 1500 ram truck. Best motor in a truck I have ever had.
I love my truck because it handles well. It has great power and tows very well. Gas mileage is good on highways. Not so great in the city. The exhaust manifold has been repaired at 75,000 miles. This truck is a great pickup truck. It's practical for transporting large items and has enough space in the cab to carry 5 people comfortably while getting 18 mpg with a powerful 5.7l v8. The only issue I have is the truck rusts very easily. The primer isn't the greatest so if you use your bed, I suggest getting a liner or spraying it.

An interesting detail is that the truck bed is so large that it can hold a lot.
It has a large touch screen along with heated seats, a heated steering wheel and a sunroof. The touch screen radio has Sirius XM radio and FM and am radio. The seats are very comfortable and can go back and forth. The backseat is three seats with a small window behind it. The truck bed is the best part since it can hold so much such as beds, bikes, canoes, kayaks, scooters, and toys. I also love the reliability, it is a large vehicle and feels very safe and huge. It has four wheel drive which nice when it is winter and need to go up and. Down large hills or need to get through snow and ice roads.

Engine dies and won’t start
I read a review where someone goes to start their v6 ram and nothing happens, they remove the key and replace, then it starts. My 2017 bighorn v6 starts for 1 second then dies. Nothing happens when I try to start it until remove the key, replace, then it starts. The dealer service department says they have never heard of this ever happening. There are no codes and only does this once or twice a month. I’ve tried both keys, same thing. The dealer was kind enough to replace the part the key goes into. No change. Hopefully it won’t leave me walking. I’m sure it will break as soon as warranty is up. I like the rest of truck.

Honest review of a 2017 ram 1500.
The 2017 ram 1500 is a great and reliable truck mechanically. The towing capacity and torque of the truck in my own opinion is the best in its class. The truck is great for pulling a camper or other trailer and is a reliable vehicle to have in the road. The 2017 ram 1500 however does seem to lag behind its competitors like ford and GMC in other minor issues. The truck seems to have more rattles, more issues with interior noise. And minor cheap fixes like windshield wiper blades coming apart when the truck has under 25,000 miles. Overall for the much lower price than other competitors and for the engine and transmission capabilities. I would recommend this truck.

Ram-nothing compares to performance and reliability.
I have been a ram owner for 15 years, this is my 3rd one. Performance and reliability are the main reasons why I cannot switch to another make; nothing else compares. I do a lot of driving and never had any major mechanical issues. Of course you have to do your part and maintain the vehicle's vital maintenance, but that is just common sense.

Warning cameras work great. Love the heated steering wheel. The color is awesome. The towing package is nice and was great to have because we haul a 30 ft travel trailer.

Best riding in most of the work truck on the market
The ram tradesman is one of the best trucks I feel on the market. Even though I only have a V-6 it has a ton of power and gets every job done while saving gas. There is plenty of space for five passengers. The only thing I would change is I wish they had more storage. I've owned many trucks in the past By far this is the most comfortable dependable ride I've ever owned.

Our trucks pet name is optimus prime. Dodge RAM really lives up to it!
From day one we have had the best luck with our beautiful new Dodge RAM 1500. This experience has shown me the comfort and strength this truck has, as well as all the new technology gets involved in our track. We've had a truck for just about one here and we have had zero problems. The Dodge RAM is clearly our truck of choice!

Overall: a great and reliable vehicle.
We have owned our truck since 2018 and bought it brand new. We haven't had any problems with the performance but we have had a few inconveniences with the accessories. The backup camera has stopped working twice until tapped from the outside. There must be something with the wiring. Also, we just had to replace the battery and the truck has less than 55,000 miles.

This ia a great family Truck
It has a lot of bells and whistles, I love the heated seats and steering wheel. Very spacious for my tall family. It has a surprising amount of power.

It is a rams nicest looking trucks on the road today. I get around 21 mph.
I like the hemi motor, it has power to spare. Towing a camper it has enough horsepower to pass a vehicle. I like the looks and the stance of the vehicle. The price of the vehicle was in my ballpark.

Great 10 out of 10 regular or work truck!
All in all it is a wonderful vehicle and very reliable. Good on gas. Comfortable ride. Cosmetically pleasing. Great all around vehicle even in the toughest conditions. Awesome work truck. Provides very reliable transportation. Able to haul all my tools and even a welder generator in the bed of my truck.

Love my ram trucks I am a lifetime ram man.
Love my ram truck! This is the third ram I have owned and I will continue to buy them! The look amazing, perform wonderfully and are affordable. They are reasonably easy to work on when necessary and parts are readily available. Plenty of room for what I need and plenty of power.

I like the good gas mileage and the crew cab because of all the room.
No problems. Very reliable. Gets 23 mpg around town and 28 on highway. Very comfortable ride.Have. Crew cab with plenty of room for 6 people. Plenty of towing power with the 3.6 v-6 engine. With the eight speed transmission it gets really good gas mileage.

Amazing, reliable truck that gives a great ride!
Drives great and very comfortable. We bought it used and are still learning all the great features it has! Love the backup camera, the coolers in the floorboard and the opening rear window. Very practical for our lifestyle. We live on a small farm and are always hauling something.

Fantastic van that turns on a dime.
What I love about my ram, is that though it is a relatively big vehicle it does not drive like one. It feels light and turns on a dime. Which is my favorite feature, it is ability to turn so sharply. One negative would be it is inability to play CD's or Bluetooth.

Solid truck all around. Best one I have owned.
Reliable, comfortable, good gas mileage for a truck. Haven't had many problems with it at all. I like the seats, steering wheel, sounds system, center console is nice. Bed size is perfect for hauling things for work and to get things for around the house. Lots of room in the backseat.

2017 ram 1500 sport lime green color.
I have wanted a ram since I was a teenager. Their body look and comfortable rides stole my heart a long time ago. The sport edition is very nice. It has all the features you'd want in a truck. The only thing I don't like about mine is not having a sunroof. It has backup camera, heated seats, remote start and so many other little features that you'll come to love. The sport edition hood is very nice and mean looking.

Best truck for the best price.
I love this vehicle. It is one of the smoothest rides I have ever experienced in my life. All of the safety features topple even some brand new models. It gets great gas mileage for a full cab pickup. I would recommend to anybody who was looking for a great truck at a great price!

It can hold all my tools, and it's nice on the inside so I am comfortable too.
I love it since it is amazing for getting wood and my tools around because I build in my spare time, and I have a lot of it. I can get maybe 5 sheets of wood and all my tools in the bed and everything's just alright. I do also love the Bluetooth so when I am driving I can listen to what I want and just pick up the phone and don't have to worry about the cord limiting where I can set it.

The amazing ram 1500 that is great on gas.
My new rim is very fuel-efficient. I have not had any problems whatsoever so far. The only thing I have had to do is basic maintenance like oil change and tires. The inside is very spacious and the seats are extremely comfortable. The built-in navigation helps you find anywhere you would like to go. The sound system in the truck is crystal clear makes any genre of music sound awesome.

Ram 5. 7 liter hemi v8 1500 review.
I like the ram. Ride is very smooth. Downfall is it eats gas. Hemi has lots of power. Priced much better than the competition. I will get another RAM when I decide to get a new truck. The RAM is a good truck especially for the money. If your interested in a truck definitely check on the ram.

The knob shifting is interesting.
Have only had one problem with the vehicle. A defective freeze plug cracked and was spraying coolant. Previous owner did not take care of it. Sometimes can see the lights fade when in idle. All in all a great truck. Wished that it was a four wheel drive.

There is nothing about it that I dislike. I feel it fits my personality perfectly.

It is worth the extra money.
I love the comfort of the interior. I drive a Ram rebel so it is fully loaded with leather seats and automatic everything. I also enjoy the air suspension. Being short, I love the fact that it lowers. Great stereo system that comes with nicer speakers than the typical ram.

Adjustable airbag suspension!
Of course the only downfall is the gas mileage, but due to my work I need a truck. This one is my all time favorite! The look, the ride, and the extras is everything I love about this vehicle and of course the power and handling. Inside is all the comforts you need, heated seats and steering wheel plus adjustable seat. I'm a tiny woman so it's nice to be able to adjust the seat to fit me instead of having the track just sliding too far forward or back. The radio is awesome and the rebel details are what makes it stand above the rest.
