2019 GMC Terrain Review: Reliable & Comfortable Small SUV With No Serious Issues

Alex Showalter
Jan 24, 2023

The 2019 GMC Terrain lasts around 200,000 miles with some relatively minor sensor and paint issues reported. At $18,725 to $25,875, it’s a good value for a compact SUV with an upscale interior.

likeFilled The Good
Braking performance is better than other small SUVs, the handling is responsive and the stereo system is very good.
dislikeFilled The Bad
There’s a lot of road noise, the suspension is overly firm and the base engine is relatively weak.

Is the 2019 GMC Terrain a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 8/10 – 2019 is a good year for the GMC Terrain since there are upscale cabin features with low ownership costs. Owner reviews praise the advanced technology, smooth suspension, along with the upscale interior.

  • Value 7/10 – The 2019 GMC Terrain is cheaper than many other SUVs on the market, although it depreciates quickly, lowering its overall value score.

It is a smooth ride and a great looking vehicle.
I love the vehicle. I love everything about it. There is nothing I do not like about it, very glad with my purchase and very nice and smooth ride. It is a sharp looking vehicle as well, I am very happy with my purchase. I highly recommend this vehicle.

The vehicle is very easy to drive and very comfortable to drive in.
My car’s performance is actually really well. It runs really smoothly and is when I press the break it eases into it instead of being super hard to press. It is also really easy to drive in and makes driving more comfortable. It even has really nice high-tech features. Some features are a backup camera so you can see what is behind you when reversing. It also has a screen in the front that shows the speed and mileage. It also has many different features for music, such as being able to connect your phone to play music through Bluetooth and a variety of radio stations.

I am loving my new GMC terrain.
I absolutely love my GMC terrain! It has enough space for everyone and everything that I need to get from point a to point b. Its outside look is sleek and makes feel proud to be driving it around town. The charcoal gray color keeps it looking nice even when it definitely needs a bath.

Recalls and performance issues.
Recalls are inconvenient to fix. Incessant beeping with remote controlled device, difficult with small sleeping children. Very reliable vehicle, good performance in snow and ice, handles well although transmission needed recall work. Nice color, safe for kids.

Great quality SUV for a amazing price.
The terrain is a very comfortable car with plenty of room inside. It handles the snow amazing and I feel very safe inside in. The fact that I can switch from front wheel and all wheel drive whenever it is necessary is such a great feature! The car drives very smoothly.

It is great, it drives well and is super fuel efficient and sleek looking.
No problems with the car. It is super fuel efficient, and a very easy driver. I have over 20k miles into the car and it runs perfectly. I have had no serious or minor mechanical issues with the vehicle in the two years of owning it. I highly suggest people looking for a smaller sized SUV get the GMC terrain.

Transmission problems
After only 39K miles my transmission started slipping. I am reading a lot on the issue with others across the country that are driving the following GM vehicles, Yukon, Sierra, and Terrains. GM doesn't seem to be admitting that there is a problem. I've been driving Honda's and Subaru's for years, this is my first GM product and it will be my last.

Fabulous except for XM radio or anything requiring connecting iPhone to car.
Love the turbo, comfortable seats. On a long trip can get up to 32mph. Problem is that Sirius XM is not built into the radio. You have to connect your iPhone to the car and navigation with the phone. This is my only complaint with this car. It is extremely distracting if you are driving. I actually canceled my XM subscription at this time due to that very reason.

This is the worst car I have ever bought brand new
I had my 2019 SLT Terrain 2 weeks and the sound on the infotainment system wouldn't play, the seat belt and door chimedidn't sound. All of this happened 2 times in a week period. I took the car back to Vann York Chevrolet GMC Cadillac in High Point NC. They kept the car a week to tell me there was nothing wrong with it, and it was probably my error. I'm 53 and I dont know a volume knob works. STEER CLEAR OF THIS CAR.

2019 Terrain Denali, this is my 2nd Terrain. I loved my first one, this one...started having issues 2 days after leasing. It has been back to the dealership no less than 6 times. They fix one thing and another electrical problem happens. This will be my last GMC product!

The Seats are the most Uncomfortable Seats I’ve ever had in a Vehicle. It’s like sitting in a Hard Airplane Seat! I noticed a elastic piece with a clip hanging from the passengers seat after I got it home. The seat cover is actually a cover held on with clips!! When I hit a bump it feels like I’m riding on the Rim. Floor carpet in the back seat was not installed properly leaving gaps. GM quality is not what it use to be. I know since I’m a retired GM Rosie the Riverter. The only thing I love about it is the gas mileage. TG it’s a lease and I can’t wait to give it back!!

Mechanical issues
Has 2019 Terrain 4 cyl for 8 mos. Have had to have oil pump replaced, then oil pan was leaking & had to be replaced, now misfire on cylinder 3 & has to go back in again. 9,000 miles. Can’t trust it to go on a trip. Unreliable. My last GM vehicle

Techno - problems
Besides the awfulfitment between body panels, what really floored me was the techno fail. Only one power USB port? Really? It's a five passenger vehicle. And to be even crazier, that one powered USB goes dead after a while from key shutdown. Boo I thought perhaps I could put a multi-outlet cigar (old fashioned description) lighter power in, but NO, that dies shortly after engine shutdown. Waaaaa I kinda understood this when my bLil Honda fit with a lil motorcycle battery did this. Back to techno comparisons. Our 2016 Jeep Cherokee hookups between phone and vehicle worked so much easier (though not without some sailor language. Bottom line- gmc is supposed to be the middle line between Chevy and b Cadillac. You'll need to go with the top-of-line Denali to get there.

Summary of the 2019 GMC slt terrain.
I bought the car used. I have only had about a month. I have not had any major problems per say, but the dashboard rattles and it only has 20,000 miles on it. Also, the accelerator is touchy. If you do not push it hard enough nothing happens. If you push it too hard it goes into overdrive very easily. It does not accelerate as smoothly as my older Honda pilot. The fit and finish on the inside of the car is okay, not great. I do like the style and shape of the body. I chose the silver color and it is very good at hiding dirt. The seats are comfortable.

Nice and Classy
I love the interior and exterior style of my new 2019 GMC Denali. It'sa big step down from my GMC Yukon XL. But still there is ample room. The only drawback is how small, short, hard, and uncomfortable the front seats are. The driver seat is very hard and small. More leg room in the front would be perfect.

What Do Critics Say About the GMC Terrain?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2019 GMC Terrain offers a premium alternative to other compact SUVs on the market, with decent owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Terrain at 3.3/5, praising the comfortable and upscale interior, but doesn’t like the weak diesel engine.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Terrain a 4.1/5, enjoying the powerful 2.0L 4-cylinder engine, but owners don’t like the slow transmission.

What Common Problems Does the 2019 GMC Terrain Have?

Common problems reported on the 2019 GMC Terrain include forward automatic braking system issues, peeling paint, as well as a frozen infotainment screen. Overall, most of these problems are relatively minor compared to some other SUVs on the market, leading to low repair costs.

Forward automatic braking system issues are the most widespread complaint from 2019 Terrain owners in the first 5,000 miles. There are software updates available for the safety system which improve the reliability of the forward braking sensors. Most dealers will install the update for free, while others charge around $50. If the front sensors are damaged they can cost up to $400 to replace.

Peeling paint, particularly on the hood and roof, has also been reported by Terrain owners at around 50,000 miles. Paint which is left in direct sunlight and not properly cared for will degrade faster than average. The only solution is repainting the affected areas, at a cost of around $1,000 per panel.

A frozen infotainment screen is another problem mentioned by owners in the first 10,000 miles. There are a lot of software updates for GMC’s latest stereo system which improves its reliability. Dealers usually will install all these updates for free, while some charge around $50 for an hour of labor.

There are three recalls on the 2019 GMC Terrain, which is similar to some other SUVs from the same year. The most serious recall cis for missing bolts on the start/stop accumulator which can cause the transmission to leak oil. GMC will replace the bolts on affected models for free.

How Long Will the 2019 GMC Terrain Last?

A well-maintained 2019 GMC Terrain can last around 200,000 miles, which is about 100,000 miles less than the long-lasting Toyota RAV4. Regular annual maintenance costs are higher than some other SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $650 per year.

As a used 2019 GMC Terrain reaches 100,000 miles owners should be prepared to replace the ABS control module for $600, stabilizer bushings costing $350, as well as the ignition coils which are $120 each.

Yes it is a very reliable vehicle. I have not had any problems or issues with the car other than having to have a spark plug replaced.

accountCircle Lesa C

Very reliable, I have never had any problems! Under full warranty if I ever do though!. Everyone I know loves there's too, no complaints.

accountCircle Denise G

It is extremely reliable. I haven't encountered any problems since I have owned it. The car's assisted driving technology has many great features: it basically brakes to help you avoid a collision if the car senses another car too close ahead, just enough to slow the car down safely, it will not allow you to engage in drive or reverse if any door is open even slightly.

accountCircle Tasha R

Currently the model does not have any problems. It is seems to drive well. I have yet to experience the all-wheel-drive in mode in our Chicago winters.

accountCircle Eric H

The terrain is very reliable I have yet to run into any issues with my terrain. I do not like that you cannot turn off the idle engine feature.

accountCircle Kristen S

It’s reliable. I had one problem - a strut blew out within the first 3 months of my lease. And just recently I received a recall notice regarding a programming issue with the shifter. In both instances GMC fixed the issues satisfactory. I feel very comfortable and safe driving my Terrain.

accountCircle Katie N

No problems! A little hard to figure out radio and other little things. But so worth it once you try it

accountCircle Sara H

Yes it is very reliable. I have not had any issues with the vehicle. It rides well and tells you if something is wrong.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is great on the 2019 Terrain since it has a standard 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Available upgrades include a larger 8-inch touchscreen as well as an improved Bose stereo system.

Safety technology is good with a standard rearview camera along with Teen Driver mode, which allows you to set speed and volume limits.

Optional advanced safety and driver assistance features include:

  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Lane keep assist
  • Surround-view parking camera
  • Lane depature warning
  • Low-speed forward collision warning
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Lane change assist
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Parallel and perpendicular park assist
  • Safety alert seat
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Adaptive headlights

Is the 2019 GMC Terrain a Good Value?

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The second generation of the GMC Terrain came out in 2018.

2015: 4G WiFi hotspot added to every model.

2016: Lane departure warning system & blind spot monitoring on the SLE-2 and SLT models.

2017: Standard 18-inch alloy wheels across all models, nightfall appearance package offered.

2018: Fully redesigned for the second generation with new engines, interior, and exterior.

2019: Upgraded high-resolution rearview camera, new exterior appearance package.

2020: Diesel engine removed from the lineup, upgraded suspension on the Denali model.

2021: Turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder engine discontinued.

How Does the GMC Terrain Compare to the Competition?

The 2019 GMC Terrain is a nice compact SUV since it combines a lot of luxury and technology at a relatively affordable price, making it a good choice for shoppers on a budget.

The Chevy Equinox is another SUV available for around $1,500 less. Both the GMC Terrain and Chevy Equinox are built on the same platform, while the interior is much nicer in the GMC Terrain. We recommend the GMC Terrain since you get significantly more upgraded features for the extra money.

The Hyundai Santa Fe is another small SUV which costs about $1,000 more. Interior materials are a bit more luxurious in the Hyundai Santa Fe, while the GMC Terrain has more passenger room. We recommend the Hyundai Santa Fe since it has a longer warranty with lower ownership costs.

GMC terrain- good car; some feature issues.
The GMC terrain has a sleek design and smooth driving experience. I enjoy the innovative design of the terrain's shifting system. It is a very comfortable car and has a very easy to use camera. On the downside I have run into a few problems with phone connectivity and unfortunately the only way to use the screen as a GPS is if the phone is plugged into the car. Additionally, in the past I was able to drive, receive a notification, and be read that notification. Now it no longer registers and reads it for me.

This car fulfills all my needs!
I love the all black AWD model. The small turbo engine is not exactly fast but does move quickly while highway driving. The 2019 model made big improvements from the 2016. It is more compact, the seat trim is more comfortable, air vents are better placed with additional one added in the back and storage space. I love hidden compartment in the trunk, easy to keep necessaries organized. The only con’s I truly have is the wood grain interior trim, on an all black model I would have liked a brushed silver or all black and if you drive with the windows down it creates a ruffling noise in the back.

So far I have had no problems with the terrain. It is very comfortable and has a lot of luggage or grocery space. It has all the extras that I need blue. Bluetooth, GPS, sunroof, keyless entry, electric seats and more. Also it is a very pretty style and color. The gas mileage is great.

Great, reliable vehicle with a classy sleek suv look.
The only complaint I have is where the cup holders are. The should have been moved back a little bit, when you reach for the gear shift, and there’s a drink in the way, it is almost always knocked over. Other than that, it is a really nice, reliable vehicle.

Great for every day and weekend adventures!
I love the looks of my terrain. I got it with the black package and comfort and safety... But not the AWD. That is the main thing I wish I would have gotten as I now live in a state where it is necessary for ease of travel. It is a good vehicle for everyday use as the gas mileage is not bad and cargo space is great (I have put my 8’ kayak and two bikes inside comfortably). It is not a fast car and the way the engine turns off when you come to a complete stop still seems a little odd. The safety features are key though... Lane assist and backup cameras are one of the greatest features I have experienced.

Great first purchase for new growing family.
Its super cute! Is very spacious. Only a couple things I do not like, it sits low for a SUV, kind of like a minivan. And its sluggish. And when you push on the gas from a dead stop it shifts hard kind of jerking. But it's great on mileage and pretty comfy for long rides.

The automatic stop start engine.
I love my terrain. Driving long distances is never a problem because of the comfortable seating and space for passengers. TheLuxury iis nice
This is a roomier vehicle than the 2018 Equinox, I own, but not as big as the 2016 Tahoe Denali it replaced. Having owned these 3 vehicles I will say some features are better, some not. The Terrain's big problems have been electronic/software related, the updates seem to have fixed these problems for the most part. I still do not enjoy it when the adaptive cruise kicks out, which happens from time to time, they say it is supposed to kick out, to keep you alert. Switching to manual cruise will get you by, until the adaptive kicks back in. I often get "Park Assist" errors when stopping at stop signs and stop lights. We do prefer the heated seats in my Equinox, they get much warmer, which we love. The heat shield under the front passenger floor board started to make noise, it is just above the exhaust. The shield is thin and was tearing. Made a lot of noise when driving 75 plus out west. The vehicle handle pretty d**n good, even in the heavy snow and icey roads out west. This was right before and directly after they closed the Interstate, because of the bad weather.

2019 GMC terrain--I love mine!
I love my GMC terrain. I picked the Denali package and it has all the bells and whistles. Previously I had a terrain, but not the Denali package. Liked the first terrain, but love my 2019. I chose white for the exterior color and it is a light tan interior color. That color is much better than black because it does not show dust inside. It has get up and go when you hit the gas. My two boys in their 20's love driving it. Very sporty. Has a long sunroof that I really enjoy as well. Remote keyless start--I would never have a vehicle that does not have that. All around one of my top choices for anything I have ever driven. Go find one now!

2019 GMC terrain is a good option for a smaller SUV.
The 2019 GMC terrain is comfortable and spacious. There is sufficient space between the back of the driver and passengers seats and the back seat. The truck is spacious and the back seats fold all the way down to allow for more cargo space. The defrost ventilation is extremely loud, however clears the windows of fog rather quickly. The terrain is less sporty looking and does not have the standard safety features that comparable vehicles have (lane assist, automatic cruise control adjustment, automating high beam adjustment).

I haven't found any problems with my car but I eated it a 4 because this is not the car that I wanted, but it is the one they gave me. I would rather have had a small four door vehicle. The car that I have now is just way too much room for my small family and its kind of a flashy car.

My GMC terrain is spacious enough for my family of 4. I am used to larger cargo space but it works for us. It took some time getting used to using buttons instead of a gear shift but now I like it more. I have cloth seats but they are easy to keep clean even with 2 boys in soccer.

My review of new 2019 GMC terrain.
The advantages of this vehicle include: sits up high giving large open view, easy to drive, park and handle. Another bonus is the 1.5 liter turbo engine which provides all the engine power one needs and gives great mileage. Only disappointment is road noise. Could be quieter and the vehicle does not seem very tight. Subtracts from the quality factor.

The all-wheel drive is very convenient. The back seats fold down and makes it very roomy. The terrain is also very good on fuel. The stereo system it is very nice. I wish the vehicle had better Bluetooth options.

Great family car with lots of extras.
The car runs great so roomy for the whole family. The only problem is the radio screen sometimes goes black or doesn't want to turn off. The car also runs great in rain and snow. Love that keyless start and that the back closes with me having to pull it closed.

GMC terrain review 2020 New York, NY.
In the beginning, the car had a recall. The screen kept going black, sometimes the blinker doesn't make a noise. Overall, the car is great. It runs so well on gas and oil. The car is so spacious. The trunk is huge, as well as the back seat and front seats. Car is great is snow! I have only back wheel drive, not all four and it still runs great.

2019 GMC terrain slt review.
Couple recalls on vehicle so far. We bought the vehicle for my wife and she loves this everyday driver. From going to work or long distance drives to see family this is our go to.. It has the heated steering wheel and heated seats that we just love.

Reasons why I love my terrain.
Since the first time I drove my 2019 terrain it is been awesome! It is drives like a SUV and feels like your driving a car. This is not my first terrain but it is my favorite by far, the metallic grey paint shines in the sunlight and hardly shows the dirt. The interior is the perfect amount of space for myself, husband and son. In the back there is plenty of room for all of my son’s sports equipment with extra room for chairs, traveling out of town is more pleasurable with pace to take things. When it comes to gas I usually fill up 1 time every week and half but that would change depending on the driving distance. Over all I would recommend the terrain and I am excited about getting my next one.

I really enjoy that it has remote start from your key fob!
Absolutely love my GMC terrain. Overall it drives smooth on the roadway. It also comes with all the bells and whistles! The backup camera is a life saver! It is also very comfortable and roomy. You can carry 5 passengers with ease or fold the seats down and it becomes great for moving or transporting large items. Wouldn't trade my GMC for anything!

Nice Car. Long term value still to be determined.
I really like all of the new technology in the vehicle. Accessing my phone through the system is really. However, the mileage isn't as good as it claims unless you only drive on the highway. And I've already had some transmission problems in the first 6,000 miles.

Great Safety features and roomy
This is my 3rd terrain and I love the safety features, the performance and the great gas mileage. With all the rain and snow we get, I feel very safe with the all wheel drive and how it handles on the roads. I love that the back is lower than other SUV models , so I can easily slide items out instead of trying to lift them.

Little bit of issue
Little bit of issue... I couldn't find the 4x4 which I think mine is all wheel drive but it doesn't show anywhere and needless to say it's a excellent car although it has some issues during the snow and ice but great vehicle to drive in

All seats can fold down, including the front passenger seat to fit large items.
Extremely comfortable and reliable. I have never had a problem with the vehicle and I have had it for a year and a half. I have leather heated seats, remote starter through the GMC app. There is also a heated steering wheel for the winter. The safety features are great too, it beep and vibrates when you are close to another car or someone is behind you when backing up.

This car is absolutely perfect for any person or family.
I have had this car for a little over a year and I have never had a mechanical problem with this car. The performance of the car is really good and smooth. The wheels run so smooth I could always rely on this car for anything. The car is super comfortable and great for long car rides. Me and my family go on road trips in this car and we absolutely love it.

Love that it shows me the speed limit of the road I am on next to the speedometer.
No problems so far! And I love the way it drives, and the mileage it gets is great.! It is definitely my top pick for going out of town. I have had it for a year now and have put about 14,000 miles on it, it's very comfy to travel in! I also love all the features it has like apple carplay, heated seats, speed limit on the dash.

Nice vehicle, good size and gas mileage.
Good mid size SUV vehicle. Gets good gas mileage. Like keyless start and heated seats and touch screen monitor. One thing I don't like is mine did not come with XM radio installed if I wanted to get it had to run adapter that you plug in couldn't be installed.

Affordable, smaller size SUV.
The only problem I have experienced is lack of acceleration. It lags a bit when trying get up to speed of highway traffic. Good on gas/mileage, the sound system is great, navigation console is easy to use. Spacious back seat and plenty of trunk space. Seats are cloth but very easy to clean (I have a 15 month old, it gets gross quick around here).

My vehicle is a classic looking, well built midsize SUV with a lot to offer.
My vehicle is a very classic ride. Some of the Denali trim offers include: panoramic sunroof, chrome accents along bottom of the car's exterior, leather heated steering wheel, all weather floor mats, leather seats with heated seats options for all riders (front & back), cooling seat options for front sweat riders, technology offers such as: OnStar and Sirius radio.

Love the GMC terrain. Great family SUV that is not too big and is easy to handle.
The GMC terrain is very comfortable and an enjoyable ride. It is an SUV that hugs the road and you feel secure. It is a cozy size for a family of four. The only con I have about the GMC terrain is that it can be pretty loud. The sound barrier is not that great. It took a bit for me to get used to using push buttons to start and drive the vehicle. But now I truly prefer it. It is a great family car.

Uggh :(
The Seats are the most Uncomfortable Seats I’ve ever had in a Vehicle.

My terrain is great in all types of weather.
I love my terrain. It is the second one I have leased. My current terrain has an extended sunroof, which I enjoy. The vehicle has plenty of room for groceries and items I haul. It runs good in all weather including snow. I am considering getting another one after this lease is up.

Great car, perfect size and meets all your needs.
Extremely reliable and comfortable. Never had any issues. Roomy cargo space and seating. Affordable midsize vehicle. Would recommend the all weather mats, helps keep the car cleaner. Never had engine or mechanical issues. Like the car so much, I am considering leasing it again for another two years.

Loving my 2019 GMC terrain, the best buy ever.
Very good vehicle and very reliable. Also, very affordable and performs well. Tires are good. I love the leather seats and space in my vehicle. I read the color of my SUV, it is quicksilver. The cost of maintenance is very low priced. My terrain was really a good buy.

2019 GMC terrain review: all about interior.
The 2019 GMC terrain sle is an overall good car. There are some issues when it comes to the gear assist. A week after I got this car, brand new, it got stuck in first gear since the break assist kicked in as I was going down a steep hill. I have also had issues with the button gear shifting. It was quite the adjustment. After almost two years of having this car it has gotten easier. Keyless start is something I never thought I'd enjoy but it does come in handy when you can park in your garage and forget about bringing in your keys. The backseat is great for kids and can comfortably fit car seats. The car is reliable and has never had an issue since the very first one right after I got the car. The heated seats are amazing in the winter and heat very quickly. I do enjoy the option to sync or not sync the temperature or ac or heat. That is a great feature for those of us who do not always like the temperature their partner enjoys. Overall, I would recommend this car and would lease again.
accountCircle Winter S on December 14, 2020
I love my vehicle but the only problem I have with it is the technology.
My vehicle is very reliable. The only issue I have with it is the technology, it tends to act up sometimes. It will go in and out of my phone if it is plugged in and completely shut off at times. Other than that it runs perfectly fine and smooth.
accountCircle Carly O on December 10, 2020
Sleek model design! Electronic gear shifter.
My terrain is very sleek looking, since the model design change. It is a small truck, but drives like a car. It is easy to her around. The only problems I really have with my terrain is the exterior steadiness. I feel like simply pushing on the door will cause an indent. Also, a cool feature is the gears are buttons. A “stick shift” does not exist, instead Park Drive reverse and neutral are buttons. This eliminated the bulky center console with a stick shift, giving you more room in the front seat.
