The neutral safety switch in a Dodge Ram 1500 is located on the passenger side of the transmission towards the front of the vehicle. The neutral safety switch prevents the car from starting while in gear. The switch works as a relay, when You turn the key to start the engine it will only allow the starter to crank with the transmission in either park or neutral. If Your truck will start in neutral but not park or vice versa this is usually an indicator of a neutral ground, or electrical short. Just like most components in a vehicle a neutral safety switch can go bad because of age, corrosion and dirt. It's estimated to cost between $60 and $75 to have the shop replace the switch, parts being only around $20.
