2012 Nissan Rogue Review: Problem Ridden Compact SUV Buyers Should Avoid

Alex Showalter
Apr 12, 2022

The 2012 Rogue will only last around 150,000 miles with transmission and A/C failures. At $8,854 – 10,764, it’s not worth buying when there are so many expensive problems.

likeFilled The Good
Interior materials are nice for the price, the seats are comfortable and the steering is responsive.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The engine is weaker than its rivals, rear visibility is bad with the sloping roofline and there’s a lot of road noise.

Is the 2012 Nissan Rogue a Good Used SUV?

  • No, 2012 is a bad year. Owners have complaints about glitchy transmissions, overheating, and exhaust noises.
  • Reliability ratings are poor. Rogues from 20082016 have a lot of problems, with quality improvements in 2017.
  • Performance is weak from the four-cylinder engine.
  • Safety ratings are okay, getting four out of five stars in government crash tests.
  • Fuel economy is good at up to 25 mpg combined.

My super and sporty Nissan rogue.
The rogue handles really well. It's very comfortable and reliable gets you from a to z in no time. Maintenance cost are manageable. It is sporty and has plenty of space from trips to market or weekend camping trips. It seats 5 adults' easily. Lots of cargo room. You will love this make.

Love the features! You can't get the functionality and the gas efficiency.
It's pretty great. Only downside would the cost of the tires. The indication when the temperature falls outside is really helpful. Along with the Bluetooth capability. I also love that trunk has a cover that you pull over your merchandise so it is not exposed if it is left in the car.

My favorite vehicle ever: Nissan rogue.
I love the size of my car. It is not too big, not too small. It is roomy. It has been a very reliable car. I have had to change the battery, buy new tires, and brake lights/signal lights. It gets great gas mileage, and it is very comfortable to ride in. The seats, the smoothness of handling the road, the amount of room I have to move around. It is also a very stylish looking car in my opinion.

Gertrude my Nissan white little rouge.
It has been very reliable. I purchased it at carmax. It has about 77, 000 and I will need new tires but it is running very smoothly. The inside is still clean and the outside still looks really good. I have no rust. I would buy another Nissan. I also like the way it drives.

Needed a new air compressor that was very expensive and the heat shields rattle other than that I love my Nissan. Rides great and is very roomy and comfortable

Great alternative to a minivan. Can store a lot in the trunk and great car for baby seats
Great mileage and smooth ride. Seat heaters and sunroof are great additional features as well as rear camera when going in reverse. Can connect in your phone via Bluetooth and fits 5 easily. Low maintenance and has a sport button!

It's dependable. Never had problems with it other than normal maintenance.

Reliable Rogue is the best affordable SUV with great gas mileage!
The Nissan Rogue which I own has heated leather seats and is very comfortable. The best gas mileage which I have gotten is approximately 33 miles per gallon. This vehicle is all wheel drive and it has been very reliable in the winter weather. I live in northern NY and we get lots of snow.

My transmission just stopped pulling. You put the shifter in reverse or drive and it just sits there. I will never own another Nissan!

Transmission issues at 80,000 miles!
Second owner, bought at 63k miles. Began having transmission issues at 80k miles (transmission slipping after a few hours on road, slow to accelerate, metal rattling noise) Not sure why this model was not included in Nissan's CVT transmission extended warranties for similar model years! Very upsetting. I expected to keep this vehicle for a lengthy amount of time. No one should have to replace a transmission on a car with less than 100k miles!
accountCircle Tori R
Too many glitches to keep. CVT transmission is awful!
CVT transmission is awful. Governor switch does not allow for long trips. If you go over 3000 rpm or the car reaches a certain temperature the switch engages and will not allow the car to accelerate, car must be turned off and allow 10-15 minutes to reset.

That the car actually run!
I have the 2012 Nissan Rogue SL and it is by far the worst car I have ever owned!! I have had it maintained to a tee at the Nissan dealership and at barely 90,000 miles I had to spend $3000 to have the CVT transmission replaced. Once that happened, everything else broke. I got rid of the car fast after that. What a nightmare! I will NEVER purchase a Nissan again. Beware of Nissans and the CVT transmission- you will end up replacing it!!

Vehicle is a small engine SUV. Gets decent gas mileage for an SUV.
Vehicle is just not what I need. It has had the power seats go out and an exhaust rattle. It gets decent gas mileage for a SUV. I would not recommend this vehicle to anyone. I have sunk more money into this vehicle than needed. If you are looking for a reliable vehicle I would choose a different make and model of SUV.

Review of rogue. Why we do not like it.
It is a decent vehicle but it is uncomfortable and gets horrible gas mileage compared to what we are looking for. It was also expensive and is already breaking down. We bought it for a disabled women and it is not getting the job done. The ac/heater blower just went out and winter is starting so we are in a mess.
accountCircle Kelsey T
Do not buy a 2012 Nissan rogue.
Transmission is terrible, almost everything else is terrible about this car. You get something fixed and shortly after it always breaks back down.

What Do Critics Say About the Rogue?

  • Consumer Reports finds the Rogue to have limited cargo space, and owner satisfaction scores are terrible.
  • Edmunds gives the Rogue a 3.6/5 and likes the smooth ride, but finds it underpowered.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the Rogue 4.2/5 and enjoy the styling, but off-road performance is bad.

What Common Problems Does the 2012 Nissan Rogue Have?

There are many serious problems found with the 2012 Rogue including transmission failures, broken air bag modules, and check engine lights.

Transmission failures are the most common problem at around 90,000 miles. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) in Nissan vehicles are a weak spot, which costs about $4,000 to replace.

Air bag modules breaking are another frequent complaint at around 60,000 miles. The control module wears out as the vehicle ages, costing around $1,800 to replace.

Check engine lights show up regularly in the first 70,000 miles. There are many reasons a check engine light can turn on, with the most common source being a failed air flow sensor. Replacing the sensor costs about $250.

There are two recalls with the most serious being for worn out electrical connectors which can cause a fire.

How Long Will the 2012 Nissan Rogue Last?

A properly maintained 2012 Rogue will last around 150,000 miles, half as long as top competitors including the RAV4. Repair Pal estimates maintenance costs to be high at $586 per year.

Most used 2012 Rogues will have over 100,000 miles, so shoppers should be prepared to replace A/C compressors for $1,100, the steering rack and pinion costing $1,400, and the expansion valve which costs $400.

accountCircle Ju K

It's very reliable by far. The only problems I've had is with the ac compressor. Seems to be a common problem with these cars.

accountCircle Alex W

Only problem I have is with the USB connection on the stereo. Everything else is running and functioning well.

accountCircle Chelsea F

Yes I have found it very reliable and haven't had any issues with my rogue. It is been an easy vehicle to maintain.

The Nissan rogue s 2012 is a very reliable vehicle, I have not have major problems since I bought it used in the year 2015.

accountCircle H R

Nope so far and I still using it after several years of abuse and higher mileage probably I will buy another one.

accountCircle Ember G

Yes the 2012 nissan rogue is very reliable. We have not had any great problems. Just replace tires.

accountCircle Melissa G

This car has been reliable no major problems. I do the routine oil changes and tune ups. Oil changes every 3,000 miles. Nothing Major.

accountCircle June H

Our Nissan Rogue is extremely reliable. We have not had any problems with our car at all and we have had it for 6 years.

How Much Is the 2012 Nissan Rogue Worth?

Blue book prices range from $8,854 – 10,764, making the Rogue $3,000 cheaper than a CR-V or Forester. When new, the price range was $22,070 to $29,710. Depreciation is worse than average, losing about 15% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Rogue?

There are two models of the Rogue available. Technology was last updated in 2011, with a complete redesign in 2014.

S is the entry-level model with:

  • 16-inch Steel Wheels
  • Cloth Seating
  • Cruise Control
  • Power Windows & Locks
  • Four-speaker AM/FM/CD Stereo System With 3.5mm AUX Jack
  • Optional 4.3-inch Display With Rearview Camera

SV is the flagship choice offering:

  • 17-inch Alloy Wheels
  • Premium Upholstery
  • Power Driver’s Seat
  • Keyless Ignition
  • Navigation System With Five-inch Touchscreen
  • 360 Degree Camera System

What Engines Come In the Rogue?

The Rogue comes standard with a weak 2.5L four-cylinder which makes 170 horsepower and a maximum of 25 mpg combined. Performance is poor, taking 8.6 seconds to go from 0-60 mph.

What Colors Does the Rogue Come in?

How Big is the Rogue?

The 2012 Rogue is an average size compact SUV similar to the Escape and Sportage. Passenger room is very good with plenty of legroom for adults in both rows.

Cargo space is less than rivals, with 28.9 cu. ft. of room behind the backseats, increasing up to 59.7 with the seats folded flat.

VehicleHistory Image

How Does the Rogue Compare to the Competition?

The Toyota RAV4 is a popular competitor costing about $4,000 more. Where the RAV4 stands out is with better reliability ratings, but interior materials are nicer in the Rogue. We recommend the RAV4, which is longer lasting and has lower ownership costs.

The Nissan Murano is another rival costing only around $500 more. Where the Murano stands out is with more power and space, but the Rogue has better handling. We recommend the Murano, which has fewer mechanical problems and is in the same price range.

It's been a very reliable car
I bought the 2012 Rogue SV over a Rav4 due to the interior which is much nicer than the Toyota. It has 76K on it now and still runs and rides well. Recently I've replace a front lower ball joint, a cv joint boot, turn signal relay and front control arms. No issues with the engine, transmission and a/c. I've been so pleased that I bought a 2018 Rogue with 10K last November.

Very reliable with low maintenance and a very comfortable ride.
Needed transmission at 80,000. Also needed boots on both sides at 60,000. Exceptional ride. Very stable with very good control in steering. Quiet ride and no leaks. Paint is holding up very well without a garage. Put on front brakes at 60,000. Interior is intact.

Minimal maintenance issues, positive safety experiences.
I haven't had many issues out of my vehicle besides the air conditioning being replace about 4 years after I bought it. I do feel like the shocks are a little squeaky. Overall, I haven't spent much money on its upkeep besides typical maintenance (oil change, tire rotation, etc.) It has been involved in several fender benders, but I am please with how well it has held up as a result of those.

2012 Nissan rogue review with details about blind spot and rearview mirror.
The 2012 rogue is a great little SUV with great features as steering wheel controls hand free calling Bluetooth and a rear view camera. This vehicle does have a blind spot and is hard to see threw rear view mirror die the fact the back seat takes up most of what you are able to see.

Great mpg for an SUV. Very reliable.
Surprisingly good gas mileage for an SUV. Roughly 25 mpg. Plenty of room inside and seats are very comfortable. Haven't had any mechanical issues. Oil changes are a decent price, not too expensive. Lots of trunk space. Very reliable vehicle. XM radio and navigation work great.

2012 Nissan rogue: smooth sports car.
For a 2012 vehicle with over 130k miles on it, I love that it still runs smoothly. It's a very comfortable sport car, very good on gas per mileage. The interior design and leather seats are very nice and comfortable. My Nissan rogue came with Bose speakers installed AMD they really sound great.

The rogue is good on gas, fuel efficient. It provides a smooth and comfortable drive. Does well in the snow, safe and reliable. There has been issues with windows and door mechanics, requiring repair and replacement. Often hear a strange noise, have not been able to identify what the issue is.

Nissan rogues are the best.
Bad tires sensors and a lot more work under the hood that needs. Sensor changes, oil changes, and body work. All and all it can run very well a lot of space for everything. Definitely needs some work to it but it is a great car. Second owner of the vehicle very high mileage. Good on gas!

Nissan rogue 2012. Very smooth ride.
I have had no major problems so far, just general maintenance. I love the way it drives. It has heated leather seats and a sunroof. The seats are very comfortable and toasty when it is cold out. It drives very smooth. The backup camera is extremely useful as well. The seats fold down and there is a good amount of trunk space.
accountCircle Kayla L on May 28, 2021
Great size for a small family.
I have had the car for 5 years and have had very few problems with it until this year. I have had to get new cv joint on both front axles. I like the size of the vehicle and feel like it is neither too big or too small. It provides a comfortable ride and does not feel cramped with a car seat in the back.
accountCircle Hannah R on May 26, 2021
It is dark purple & it has a ton of trunk space. It is an in-between of car & SUV.
I am currently having issues with the following: the transmission- it is slipping in and out of gear. Wiring- the dash goes crazy randomly. The alternator- had to be replaced. Battery- had to be replaced twice. Brake lights- cannot get them to turn off. Gas cap.
accountCircle Abraham W on May 23, 2021
I love the color of this car. It is what caught my attention.
This car has electricity problems. Sometimes random symbols on the board light up while there is nothing wrong with the car. Also, this car is not very strong when it comes to driving on bad roads. If it travels long enough on these kinds of roads it starts to develop wheel alignment issues.

Nissan rogues are well worth your money.
I have had a great experience with my rogue. I bought it used with about 30,000 miles on it. This is my 6th year with it. I am at about 114,000 miles so I have driven it a lot. It has more space than you think. I am an athletics coach so I have a ton of equipment all year round in there. The continuously variable transmission takes some getting used to. As sometimes it can seem like driving a golf cart with not shift changes. I am used to now.

My vehicle sucks it has over 120 thousand miles on it. The entire is alright I take really good care of it and it drives smooth and fast. Very nice comfort lovely seating for about comfortably 4 to 5 people. The cars mileage per gallon is not the best by the means of any other car but it runs.
accountCircle Austin H on April 28, 2021

The rogue run's great. Currently has 50k miles on it and it still feels new. I would recommend this car to any age. From people just starting out to older folks just looking for a nice smooth ride. Fits 5 and still has just enough cargo.

Comfortable travel vehicle.
This vehicle was one of the best purchases that I think I have ever made. It is comfortable and nice to travel in. While there have been basic maintenance put into the car there have been no major issues or problems with the car. For myself and the travel that I have done it is the perfect size and gets a great gas mileage while on these 5+ hour trips.
accountCircle Melissa H on April 9, 2021
Not enough power, but good overall.
The car is a good size, comfortable, and fairly easy to drive. The only major complaint is that it does not have much power for pickup when you need to pass or go up a hill. It also seems to lose power on longer trips (over 2 hours at a time). I also do not like the feature which automatically unlocks the doors as soon as you turn off the engine. But overall we've been pleased with it.
accountCircle Talissa L on April 8, 2021
Nissan rogue is not built to last.
We are having issues with the brakes, the check engine light is on, the tire pressure warning is constantly up, our back windshield wiper broke off, and in the past we were hearing a weird noise coming from the muffler. I do not think this car is good for the long run.

Reliable and comfortable car. Check trans if buying used! Love my rogue!
Apparently the transmissions on these cars have issues. I had to replace my transmission at 90k miles. It cost $3800 and I was not happy. Acceleration is not the best either. Even with the new transmission it takes a while to get the car to. Move. Other than that this car is very comfortable and reliable. Gas mileage is great! There is a lot of space in the back for groceries, beach chairs etc.

I absolutely love my Rogue. It is large enough to fit a lot of people on a road trip but small enough that it's easy to park on the streets. The back up camera is amazing. The only problem is that the stereo was made to hook up to an ipad, not a phone, so sometimes it doesn't like my streaming.

It can endure high mileage with proper maintenance.
The Nissan rogue is very economical and affordable. It is a compact SUV that is pretty roomy. The drive is pretty smooth but has a sport option for rougher terrain. Its AWD so it is great in rough weather. It is an older model (2012), but I have not had any problems with it. The best thing about the Nissan rogue is that the brand holds Its value pretty well.

Performance and act label for Nissan Rogue 2012.
The car, overall, is a durable vehicle for its kind. The features are well up to date with most recent technology. The seats can be considered quite stiff, not the most comfortable. It is a very light weight car; therefore, the gas/brake pedals are sensitive. It is performance is higher than expected.

Things I love about my Nissan rogue.
I personally really love my car. The size of it is perfect, it is not too big but not too small. It comfortably fits 5 passengers and has a good amount of room in the trunk to fit a lot of stuff. The sound system and quality is really good and makes it enjoyable to listen to music. My car rides very smooth which I like. The gas mileage is pretty good too and I get around 250-300 miles on a full tank. I haven't really encountered any issues with my car, I just wish it had a sunroof. The backup camera does not have a huge display screen but definitely gets the job done. Overall I do not really have many complaints about my car and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for an SUV.

I don't think most people understand how to maintain a car with a CVT. Changing the transmission fluid is a MUST and can cause significant damage if neglected.
I think it drives well and the gas mileage is great. I love the interior and the way it is designed. My least favorite thing is the door handles on the outside. Both my driver and passenger handles have broken off.
