The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek lasts around 250,000 miles with some minor differential and paint issues reported. At $20,950 to $28,975, it’s a decent value for a compact SUV with excellent off-road capabilities for the money.

Passenger room is great for a compact SUV of its size, the suspension is very smooth and visibility is also good with the large windows.
dislikeFilled The Bad
It’s slower than other compact SUVS, the steering feel is loose and there’s not as much cargo space as some competitors.

Fantastic vehicle with amazing features.
A beautiful car with amazing features. The interior is high quality and the drive is incredibly smooth. The company has great customer service and made the entire process easy and comfortable. The two front seats are very comfortable and the back row has plenty of room and is also comfortable. The stereo has great sound and the display is amazing. You feel safe while driving and do not have to worry about it being an unreliable mode of transportation.

The Subaru Crosstrek is so amazing- you will not regret your purchase.
My car is so reliable! It drives so smoothly and quietly. I feel so safe in my Subaru Crosstrek. Definitely do not regret my purchase! This car is so comfortable. I am also able to see out of all of my windows-there are no blind spots! I am also able to control my vehicle from the app- which has been amazingly convenient.

Subaru Crosstrek is a keeper.
The Subaru Crosstrek is very reliable, we've only had it for a short time but the ride is so smooth and the car is affordable. I think we'll be sticking with Subaru for all future cars as it is great in bad weather and has not given us any problems yet.

Very safe car for old and young.
This vehicle is awesome. It is extremely safe and has a lot of safety features such as blind spot monitoring, eyesight, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning etc. Also, I have leather seats which are so comfortable and very sporty. Gas mileage is decent also.

Pros and cons: easy drive but some features disappoint.
The Crosstrek is so comfortable to drive and feels like driving a car. I love the rear camera, the trunk space and the xmas satellite radio. My complaint is that the heated seats are not hot enough, which makes it a waste. I also wish there was a way to turn off the seatbelt alert.

Bright orange Subaru Crosstrek. Great for the city and the mountains.
Really love my Subaru! Really safe already but with the additional safety additions like automatic braking and site view its great! Super comfy in the driver seat or as a passenger in the back. Plenty of room in the trunk to haul everything you need. Good height but not too tall that you cannot reach the middle to get snow off of.

Subaru makes great vehicles!
Love my Subaru Crosstrek! It is a fuel efficient, safe and sporty vehicle. I enjoy the standard features (lane departure, blind spot detection, lane correction, all wheel drive). The Crosstrek has a very smooth ride and the safety cameras help me to feel safe while driving on a highway or off-road.

One detail I like is the feature that adjusts when you drift out of a lane.
I haven't had any problems with my car since I got it. It is new and has great mileage. It is a very easy car to drive it has a rear camera for ease backing out of spaces. There's a feature that allows you to connect an app with your car that allows you to unlock and lock your car even if you are not close to your car. It has remote start, apple carplay, radio, Bluetooth, a sunroof, and even different modes to drive in.

Go for the base model. Electronics are horrible.
Hate the sensors. Never works. I have had my vehicle back to the dealer. Still nothing. If it is a clear day, everything works. Get even slightly cloudy and all errors. Plus the Bluetooth phone is the worst I have used. This is my second Subaru, and will never buy again.

It has heated seats. Which come in handy when it is cold out.
It has a very smooth ride. Comfortable seats. It gets 35-38 miles per gallon. The only thing we do not like is the position of the air vents & there is no air vents in the back seat. It is easy to get in & out of. And smaller so it can fit in the right parking spaces. We only have 1 child, but it is pretty roomy.

Subaru. Just average. Not luxury.
The car itself drives ok. I really do not like where the cup holder is it is very difficult to get your cup of coffee while you are driving. I do not like the orange thread on the black leather trim it just looks tacky. I think the overall look at the car is not as sporty as I would've liked I do not like that the passenger side seat does not have electric seats. The car does get good gas mileage I wish the navigation system was easier to use.

2020 Subaru Crosstrek premium.
Not at all because I have purchased it in the last 3 weeks, everything works well so far and I can expect nothing to change at all. Performance is weak and the vehicle is quite underpowered for my taste. The color and fit and finish is outstanding for me.

What Do Critics Say About the Subaru Crosstrek?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek is one of the best compact SUVs with high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the Crosstrek a 4.3/5, praising the comfortable suspension, but doesn’t like the loose handling.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the 2020 Crosstrek a 4.4/5, enjoying the standard all-wheel drive capabilities, but owners don’t like the weaker engine.

What Common Problems Does the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek Have?

Common problems with the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek include a damaged differential, peeling paint, along with some stereo system issues. Overall, most of the problems are less severe than other small SUVs, leading to lower repair bills as the Crosstrek ages.

A damaged differential is the most serious complaint from Crosstrek owners in the first 30,000 miles. A damaged differential usually makes a loud whining noise while driving. In some cases, simply changing the differential fluid can help resolve the problem. In other cases you may need to replace bearings, which can cost over $400.

Peeling paint is another issue reported by Crosstrek owners at around 20,000 miles. Paint which is left in direct sunlight a lot and not protected, will eventually start to break down due to the UV light from the sun. The only way to fix peeling paint is by repainting the affected areas, at a cost of roughly $1,000 per panel.

Stereo system issues also show up on some Crosstrek models in the first 1,000 miles. The stereo system has software updates available for it which improves its reliability. Most dealerships will install these software updates for free, while some charge around $50.

There are no recalls on the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek, which is better than many other compact SUVs. Since the Crosstrek has no recalls, it just means that none of the problems have been widespread or safety related, so Subaru has not needed to issue a recall.

How Long Will the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek Last?

A well-maintained 2020 Subaru Crosstrek can last around 250,000 miles, which is only 50,000 miles less than the long-lasting Toyota RAV4. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other compact SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal at $492 per year.

As a used 2020 Subaru Crosstrek reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the shocks for $450, transmission gasket costing $350, along with A/C fan which costs around $225.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is great in the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek with a standard 6.5-inch touchscreen stereo system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s an optional larger 8-inch touchscreen available, with a premium audio system as well.

Standard safety technology is basic with only a rearview camera offered.

Optional driver assistance features are very good including:

  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Forward and reverse automatic emergency braking
  • Lane keep assist
  • Rear seat reminder
  • Lane change assist
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane departure and sway waring
  • Automatic high-beam headlights

Is the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek a Good Value?

Yes, the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek is a good value since it has a lot of technology paired with good reliability ratings as it ages. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $20,950 to $28,975, making it more than a Buick Encore or Nissan Rogue. When new, the price range was $22,145 to $27,395. Depreciation is much better than average, only losing around 5% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Subaru Crosstrek?

There are three different models of the Subaru Crosstrek offered for the 2020 model year, from the entry-level Base, all the way up to the well-equipped Limited model. All Subaru Crosstrek models come standard with all-wheel drive.

Base is the entry-level model with:

  • 17-Inch Wheels
  • Cloth Seating
  • Automatic Climate Control
  • Roof Rails
  • 5-Inch Touchscreen
  • Four-Speaker Stereo System

Premium falls in the middle of the lineup, adding:

  • Heated Front seats
  • Fog Lights
  • Leather-Wrapped Steering Wheel
  • Satellite Radio
  • Additional USB Port
  • Moonroof
  • Six-Way Power-Adjustable Driver’s Seat

Limited is the flagship model which features:

What Engines Come In the Subaru Crosstrek?

The engine found in the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek is an average 2.0L 4-cylinder which makes 152 horsepower while getting up to 30 MPG. It comes with either a six-speed manual transmission, or a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Performance is okay, taking roughly 9 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH.

What Colors Does the Subaru Crosstrek Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Subaru Crosstrek?

The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek is generally considered to be a comfortable and practical small SUV. It offers a surprisingly spacious interior with plenty of headroom and legroom for both front and rear passengers. The seats are supportive and comfortable, with ample padding and adjustable lumbar support for the driver’s seat.

In terms of ride quality, the Crosstrek provides a smooth and stable ride thanks to its well-tuned suspension system. The suspension is firm enough to provide good handling and stability on the road, but also supple enough to absorb bumps and rough road surfaces. The Crosstrek has a relatively quiet and well-insulated cabin, with minimal wind and road noise. The engine is also fairly quiet, especially at lower speeds, which contributes to a more pleasant and relaxing driving experience.

How Much Storage Space Does the Subaru Crosstrek Have?

With the rear seats in place, the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek provides 20.8 cubic feet of cargo space. This is a decent amount of space for a subcompact SUV and should be enough for carrying everyday items like groceries, sports equipment, or luggage for a weekend trip.

If you need to carry larger items or more cargo, the rear seats can be folded down to create additional space. When the rear seats are folded down, the cargo space expands to a maximum of 55.3 cubic feet. This is a substantial increase in cargo space and should be plenty for carrying larger items like furniture, bikes, or outdoor gear.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The first generation of the Subaru Crosstrek was launched in 2013, and replaced by the second generation for the 2018 model year.

2015: New entry-level model, standard rearview camera on all models, Subaru EyeSight offered as an optional upgrade.

2016: Minor front bumper changes, new interior trim choices offered.

2017: Hybrid model discontinued, all-new 2.0i Premium Special Edition added.

2018: Fully redesigned for the second generation with new engines, interior, and styling.

2019: Upgraded Subaru Starlink infotainment system with minor changes.

2020: New LED lights added, standard engine start-stop.

2021: More powerful engine offered, front bumper redesigned.

How Does the Subaru Crosstrek Compare to the Competition?

The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek is a very nice compact SUV since it offers reasonable ownership costs paired with a high ride height, making it a great choice for dirt roads and light off-roading.

The Subaru Forester is another SUV offered by Subaru which is around $2,000 more. Passenger room is slightly better in the Subaru Forester, while the Subaru Crosstrek is more capable off-road. We recommend the Subaru Crosstrek since it’s more unique, unless you need the extra space offered by the Forester.

The Toyota RAV4 is another competitor, which costs around $4,000 more. Reliability ratings are better on the Toyota RAV4, while the Subaru Crosstrek’s standard all-wheel drive system is stronger. We recommend the Toyota RAV4 since it is cheaper to own, but it’s worth test driving both to see which you prefer.

The Subaru Crosstrek are both sporty and safe.
My 2020 Crosstrek is the most reliable and safe car I have ever owned. I previously owned a Chevrolet and it caused me so many issues, so it is refreshing to have a vehicle I know I can rely on 100%. Anytime my vehicle needs something, like windshield wiper fluid, it sends me a notification in my car and in my email so I fix it right away. This can come in handy when something is seriously wrong with my car.

Great vehicle for dirt roads.
Great vehicle for driving and the feature for lane detection is really handy. Power steering is really tight, any little maneuver and you are already off your lane so it is good for off roading but not comfortable when on the highway and you look down at your radio for a split second and then you are already veering off your lane. But otherwise really spacious and comfortable.

Cool, sporty and great sized compact SUV.
I love my new Crosstrek!! The ride is smooth & the safety features great except for the turning off of the engine when stopped. I am not sure if this is a good feature or not but you can manually turn it off. My only complaint is that there is not as much little storage compartments as my last car but I think it is because of some of the safety features and/or cameras. It is sporty looking & not a huge SUV with good gas mileage. Happy customer!!

Great car for city or nature!
Compact and tight turn radius makes it perfect for city driving while AWD means you will not have any issues on road trips. A little bumpy/less smooth of a driving experience. Plenty of cargo space and ability to put more on top of the car. Acceleration on highway can take some time.

Subaru crosstrek connectivity.
Nothing really comes to mind that I do not like about it. I also like the unique color of it. My only regret was that I did not get a hybrid version, as the cost between what I got and the hybrid was about $10k more. I couldn't justify the savings. Why I chose the cross trek.
I haven't had any problems with my 2020 Crosstrek! I love all the safety features it has and cannot wait for snow to fall to see how it handles the snow! The eyesight feature is great and keeps you in your lane on the interstate and watches for cars to run out in front of you or to stop suddenly in front of you! Subaru also has a great warranty! Subaru cross-trek is must-have for safety, features, and long-lasting ownership.
I love my Subaru Crosstrek overall. The one thing I do not like about it is that there is not a big middle bumper thing to rest my right elbow on when I drive. There is a middle storage & beverage holder, however it is not high enough up for my elbow to rest on it and still be able to reach the wheel. I love that there are shade extenders! This is an awesome feature I have not seen on other cars. I also love the safety of Subaru vehicles. This is why my family owns four of them! Two of my children drive Subaru vehicles as well. The all-wheel drive is a definite plus in the winter; I can drive almost full speed without slipping on the snow-covered roads.

I think it is a really great car with a lot of 'gadgets' that makes it a great purchase. It is a really comfortable car, the sound is amazing, the fact that you can connect you iPhone via CarPlay makes it even better. I feel really safe when I drive in the rain and a really cool thing that this car has is that it tells you when a car is really close to you that sometimes it even stops your car a little bit to prevent an accident.

2020 Subaru Crosstrek. With all safety features in class.
The safety features have been great thus far. The car being able to sense when cars cut us off and applying proper brake pressure is great. The blind spot sensor is useful and works well. The ride is better than I would have expected as well, very smooth. The pick up and go is better than expected as well, especially in the s mode setting of the car. Gas mileage has not been quite as good as expected but overall am happy with our purchase.

Perfect all weather amazing car.
This car has never caused me any problems in the time I have owned it. I commute for school and the gas mileage is great and I only have to refill once a week. The size of the car is ideal, enough space for cargo and friends, but still small enough to easily maneuver in the city. The car performs exceptionally well in snow and rain and the lane departure/collision warning system helps me feel safe and confident driving. The CarPlay system is also very convenient and easy to use.

Built-in compass on the rear view mirror. Do not know how to live without that!
I feel safe in my Subaru. I chose a car with the highest clearance to get through all the puddles in Florida during rainy season. I know Subarus are good cars. This is my third one and the last one lasted over 10 years and 160,000 miles. We didn't get the luxury edition only because we didn't want leather so we're missing some features I would like, especially auto close on the hatchback.

Reliable, affordable and safe!
This car is extremely reliable. It also has a ton of safety features that makes driving more relaxing and less stressful in high traffic areas. For example, the blind spot mirror is pretty common on most cars but this one has a rear and front camera detector that will alert you if there are objects in front or behind you that you are approaching too quickly. It also has lane warnings and optional lane shift, as well as x-mode for extra traction when needed in snowy/muddy situations. I would say this car has it all: safety, great in snow/mud/rain, and extremely comfortable as well as feeling like a luxury car with comfortable seating and layout. The seats are heated (living in Colorado, this is a must), the elegance of the touch screen and accessibility of the built in GPS makes road trips fun and safe, and the sound system is amazing. I also am surprised at how much the car has saved me in gas, as I usually fill it up once every week or so after lengthy commuting, resulting in about 30 miles to the gallon. The back is great for groceries and the seats lay flat if you need them to in order to load larger items, furniture, or whatever fits back there! The leather seats that I have are also very easy to clean, and considering I have two dogs that make weekly trips to the dog park, it is amazing that the seats stay clean and in great shape.

Great suv
This suv is great for city and off road fun. It has great potential and I know me and wife love this Subaru. I wish there was more trunk space but over all a great vehicle

Safety and mileage
We have had the Crosstrek Sport (Canadian) for 7 months now and it is an excellent drive. Mileage so far, after 8K kilometers, is 7.0 liters per 100 km which is way better than the manufacturer states. It replaces a 2018 Crosstrek Sport that was T-boned in an intersection. My wife and I were thrown around a bit but I credit the car with saving us from severe injuries. To me, safety is top shelf in these cars.

Subaru Crosstrek is the best for winter!
I chose this vehicle because of it is body height and the option for a manual transmission. It is a wonderful vehicle, and has the control I am looking for. The body height is necessary in Minnesota, and driving through the snow. I love the display on the dash, and car play that is connected to my phone.

The safety of the car is definitely one its highlights.
No problems with the car. I absolutely love it. It's such a fun car to have for adventures everything about the car is simplistic which can be seen as a downside to many, but I absolutely enjoy is simplicity and its rough around the edges look. I would trade this car for the world.

Crosstrek is a great first car!
It has everything I need in a car, comfortable, but also very versatile. I had enough space in my car to move myself into my college apartment and also to go camping. I feel very safe in it. My only complaint is that the stop and go and brake and acceleration is a little sensitive and not the smoothest.

If you are on the fence about Subaru, do not be, they’re amazing!
So far I haven’t had a single problem with my new 2020 Subaru Crosstrek. I absolutely love it! When I knew I needed to start looking for a new car I was hesitant, knowing it would be a long drawn out process which may or may not end in a vehicle I love. When I went to Subaru, it was nothing like my previous car purchasing experiences. They made sure I got every feature on my wishlist (sunroof, heated seats, safety features, etc.), and still stayed within my budget. My new car is high tech, feels luxurious, and drives so incredibly smooth. Not to mention it is insanely smart, and safe!

Nice looking. Reliable and nice material inside.
It is very reliable car. We bought it for my wife. Great quality build. Drives good. Only has couple s. All issues. Sound insulation is not to good and not to stable on the highway on over 60 miles per hour. Engine strong and body not bad. Great suspension.

I will love and drive my Crosstrek for many years to come!
I love my Subaru Crosstrek! I think it is kind of annoying that Subaru has so many recalls, but I would still buy another Subaru Crosstrek. I like that many Subarus are made in America and also that Subaru practices sustainability. I also like that anything above the basic trim includes the winter package of heated seats and windows.

I love my Subaru and know you will too!
I love how my Crosstrek handles in the city and on the highway. The seats are comfortable. I really appreciate being able to locate and turn on my vehicle by using my iPhone. I have a sunroof and wouldn't have another vehicle without one. The material they used for the seats is so durable.

It is working car that has style.
It is a very good car. I wish the temperature console was a little higher up/reachable. It is a good car for something high up for winter, but it's a nice size for someone who lives in the city but can be used for travel. Driving is easy. I like the color. My sister has one and is a sturdy car for her to take on rough roads.

Crosstrek review. Great size and technology.
Some of the features on my car are things I didn't even know I wanted until I had them. The cruise control that adjust speed to cars ahead of you makes driving long distances so much easier. The folding seats in the back make it perfect for carrying large things. I do not like the alert for when you move out of your lane. It does not know the difference between switching lanes and drifting so it goes off all the time. The radio system is nice because it has apple carplay but it glitches a lot! It freezes and I do not like that the arrows to change the radio stations only flip between your presets and the only way to navigate other stations is to turn the nob. I really like the height of the car it is big enough to carry a lot of things but it is not so big that it makes it harder to drive.
