Alex Showalter
Jan 18, 2023

The 2018 Tesla Model 3 can last over 300,000 miles with some software and panel fitment issues reported by owners. At $44,272 to $52,926, it’s expensive, although slow depreciation makes it a decent long-term value.

Power is fantastic on all models, the steering is responsive and seating is very comfortable on longer trips.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Overall build-quality is lacking behind other cars, the suspension is stiff and the speedometer being on the central screen is distracting.

Tesla model 3 highlights and issues.
The model 3 can comfortably seat four adults even for long distances. With the ability to go close to 300 on a charge, even traveling long distance is not difficult. The car has plenty of storage space as well and the availability of tesla chargers along freeways makes longer trips easy. I tend to mostly just drive around town but I enjoy driving in this vehicle. It is super nice to plug it in at night and be ready to go each day- no more gas station stops. There is a bit to adjust initially -especially the screen location but I actually like having very little right front of me. We added some floor mats that are easier to clean and also had the car wrapped to keep the car looking nicer. The dash is made of material that can scratch easily - I wish they used different material there. The hubcaps also are easy to scratch, I was used to tires that would be at curb level and hit first so we did get scratches on the hubcaps as well.

Tesla Model 3, car of the future
The performance of the car is outstanding. It is fast, smooth, and drives like a race car. It is quiet. The features are always expanding with updates but are so awesome. The details to the screen, navigation etc are amazing! The online things you can purchase to add to the car is a must like a charging cell phone pad, spacers for the cup holders, chrome pedal plates, and tinting the middle console.

Eco-friendly and stylish vehicle that is easy to drive and fun.
Tesla Model 3 is a great and environmentally-friendly car. I definitely enjoy driving around in it because of its smooth and easy features. The car is small and easy to navigate and autopilot mode is very convenient when traveling long distances. I highly recommend this purchase to anyone looking for a sleek, stylish, and well-performing vehicle.

Fantastic -- never buying a non-Tesla again!
The Model 3 is awesome and super fun to drive! Also, it is a beast in the snow. I love the autopilot (especially for road trips!) and safety features. Charging at home is so convenient. Early on I had to take it in for service due to an issue with the heating, but it was fixed quickly and the service team was awesome. I had an issue with the SD card later that they were able to fix remotely while I was at work, which was so cool/convenient.

I love my tesla model 3 with the long-range battery.
I love my tesla model 3. While purchasing the vehicle was a very difficult process, once I had the vehicle, I was instantly in love with it. I purchased the ultimate auto-pilot program which is incredible. I almost always use auto-pilot. I also purchased the long range battery but I am not sure if tesla is offering the model 3 with the long range battery any longer. My tesla is beautiful and extremely comfortable. The audio is incredible. I would highly recommend the tesla model 3.

Very nice and fast car with a lot of money savings.
I actually love my new vehicle it doesn't take gas which is very economic, my charging is free and I can also charge at home whenever I'd like. It charges up to 350 miles. It had a very simple but luxurious style on the inside and out. It can also go from 0 mph to 65 mph in less than 4 seconds which is pretty cool. Keyless entry and start is great too and safe because you do everything from your phone

Why I love the tesla model 3.
The tesla model 3 is a great vehicle. It is a good size for an affordable price, and it always gets me where I need to be. My favorite feature about the car is how comfortable and flexible it is. It is really easy to get to where I need to be, because of the navigation system on the maIn dashboard.

Loved the look and feel of the car.
Takes too long to recharge, I think the car would be great if I had charging stations near me. I think I purchased it to early. I think if I had the car now it would be a lot better for the commute to work. Overall it was a great car, I just think it was a bit pricey and needed to much charging compared to fueling at a gas station.

Worst vehicle I have ever worked on
I have been in the auto repair business for 50 years, this car is by far the worst car to get parts/service/information on. Not to mention rusty /corroded internal parts, I like the car ,and i"am a car collector, but for these reasons I would not by any model, new or used,

“romance mode”, which displays fire on the screen and the heaters turn on.
The tesla model 3 is a very reliable and efficient car. It has quick acceleration and fast charging at local superchargers around where you live. Prices for the tesla range based on whether you get standard range, standard range plus, mid range, or long range. The model 3 is the cheapest tesla you can buy, out of the other two options (the s and x). The entertainment options of the tesla model 3 are also incredible. They range from being able to stream the internet, watch Netflix/hulu, and play video games while parked in the car. The sound system is also very good and gets loud.

What Do Critics Say About the Tesla Model 3?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2018 Tesla Model 3 is a great alternative to other luxury compact sports sedans, with high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Model 3 at 4.8/5, praising the outstanding performance, but don’t like that it doesn’t have Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Model 3 a 4.7/5, enjoying all the advanced technology, but owners don’t like the lack of charging stations.

What Common Problems Does the 2018 Tesla Model 3 Have?

Common problems found on the 2018 Tesla Model 3 include shutting down while driving, poor panel fitment around the car, as well as some windshield defrosting issues. Overall, these problems are similar to other electric cars on the market, although repair costs get expensive out of warranty.

Shutting down while driving is one of the most widespread complaints on the 2018 Tesla Model 3. The most common reason a Model 3 will shut down is simply due to software issues with the computers freezing. Restarting the system usually fixes it. Tesla is regularly pushing over-the-air software updates to improve reliability, so shutting down while driving is rarer as the car ages.

Poor panel fitment throughout the car is another common issue reported by 2018 Model 3 owners. As the Model 3 was relatively new for the 2018 model year, and it’s from a new company, the quality control just isn’t there. In some cases Tesla will re-align panels on your car if the gaps are huge, but usually they consider them to be within tolerances.

Windshield defrosting issues have also shown up on some Tesla Model 3s in the first 15,000 miles. The sudden heating from the defroster can cause the glass to crack in some models. Model 3 windshields are more expensive than other cars, costing around $1,600 to change out if they crack.

There are 11 recalls on the 2018 Tesla Model 3, which is worse than many other compact cars from the same year. Nearly every recall is related to software issues which have been able to be fixed with over-the-air updates for free. There’s a recall for the seat belt buckle anchor, which has to be reassembled, which Tesla will also handle for free.

How Long Will the 2018 Tesla Model 3 Last?

A well-maintained 2018 Tesla Model 3 should be able to last around 300,000 to 500,000 miles before the main battery pack has to be replaced, which is similar to a Toyota Prius. Replacing the battery costs around $16,000 when it eventually wears out.

As a used 2018 Tesla Model 3 reaches over 100,000 miles and depending on the vehicle history owners should be prepared to replace the brake pads and rotors for around $900, the 12-volt starting battery costing $450, as well as the coolant which costs around $150.

accountCircle R Z

It is very reliable and has no problems. It is efficient when charging. The only bad thing would be the charging stations not having food or a bathroom for long trips.

accountCircle E S

It has a very steep learning curve. It is hard to open the doors. Breaking takes some getting used to.

accountCircle Arash T

The tesla model 3 is very safe and reliable, I haven't had any problems with it whatsoever so far.

accountCircle Teresa Z

The most reliable local vehicle in the USA. Made by us for us no one else gets close, the innovation starts at home

accountCircle Cassandra M

As far as to me I don't find any problems right now for long drives I feel we have to stop for charging but it is ok because there are more charging units

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is very good in the 2018 Tesla Model 3, offering a responsive touchscreen interface with a nice stereo system. Unfortunately, Tesla does not offer any Apple CarPlay or Android Auto connectivity.

Safety technology is excellent, offering a standard rearview camera, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, along with front and rear parking sensors. Optional upgrades include blind spot monitoring, lane change alert, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, parallel park assistance, as well as Tesla’s autonomous self-driving Autopilot system.

Is the 2018 Tesla Model 3 a Good Value?

Yes, the 2018 Tesla Model 3 is a good value since ownership costs are relatively low as they age. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $44,272 to $52,926, making it more expensive than a BMW i3 or Nissan Leaf. When new, the price range was $46,000 to $64,000. Depreciation is better than many other cars, only losing about 3% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Tesla Model 3?

There are three models of the 2018 Tesla Model 3 offered including the Standard Range, Long Range, as well as the Performance. All are equipped the same with the only major change being the performance of the electric motors. What Are the Differences Between Years?

The Tesla Model 3 was introduced for the 2017 model year.

2017: First model year for the Tesla Model 3 with similar styling to the Model S in a smaller, more affordable package.

2018: New dual-motor variant with all-wheel drive, mid-range battery pack available.

2019: Cheaper low-range battery pack added to the lineup.

2020: No major changes from 2019.

2021: Increased rage, upgraded interior & exterior trim, standard wireless phone charger.

2022: 12-volt battery is now lithium-ion, sound-reducing windows, upgraded stereo system.

How Does the Tesla Model 3 Compare to the Competition?

The 2018 Tesla Model 3 is a nice choice if you’re in the market for an electric car, although you should be aware of some of the quirks of the early Model 3 versions, which have lower build quality than the newer versions.

The Chevrolet Bolt is another small electric car which is available for $10,000 less. Passenger room is a little better in the rear seats of the Chevy Bolt, while the Tesla Model 3 has more advanced technology and stronger motors. We recommend the Tesla Model 3 since there are fewer serious issues reported as they age.

The Tesla Model X is another electric car from Tesla which costs around $30,000 more. There’s more space for passengers and cargo in the Tesla Model X, while the Tesla Model 3 has a longer range for the 2018 model year. We recommend the Tesla Model 3 for most shoppers since you get similar performance and quality for much less money.

Tesla model 3 and reliability.
The tesla lineup is really the best in the business. Why drive anything else? These cars are fast, luxurious, and super reliable. My car is a standard sedan that is faster than my friends challenger and more tech in the cabin then Mercedes and BMW. The car also requires virtually zero maintenance, no oil, no transmission and due to regenerative braking I almost never need to change brakes. Far less often than my old cars.

My tesla is my baby and I love it so much!
It is amazing! There’s hardly any maintenance, it is easy enough to charge at home, in saving a ton in gas, and the features are phenomenal. We're able to watch movies, do karaoke, save our seat settings, using the app to control it and as a key is very convenient! There’s so much that can be said about this car! I am in love with it!

Tesla model 3 review- fast.
I absolutely love my car. The speed and acceleration impresses all my friends. It has so many fun features! I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because charging just is not as efficient for me and getting gas. It takes too long and does not hold enough miles for the amount of long distance driving I do.

Touchscreen computer on wheels.
An excellent car. No problems except when the “smart” key on my iPhone forgets the car it belongs to and has to be reset. That is the only annoying thing. It is not a big problem though. The dashboard took some time to get used to - almost like an iPad with everything on a touchscreen for controls.

Tesla - a car of today and the future!
Some interior fixture had to be refitted, but overall it is a great car. The design is sleek and cool, and the software updates that they deploy will make it feel like a new car constantly as there are new convenient features loaded each time like enhanced cameras and navigation updates. I would recommend it to people who have the ability to charge at home or at least live near tesla superchargers so you can easily fill up the car. Also, many hotels in my area have chargers so when I travel it is easy.

I really love this car. The best feature is safety--especially, when using autopilot. Also, I love the fact that I do not have to go to a gas station or going every three months for oil change. Another feature that I loved is the ability to receive software updates that are free. Also, the connectivity of the car to the internet wherever I travel.

Superior technology and smooth driving.
I love the tesla model 3. The technology is my favorite thing about - the large touch screen makes all the info you need for a smooth drive so easily accessible. I like how the software updates are constantly improving the car. I love that it reads my text messages and I can talk to text to respond. The only problems I have encountered is that a few times the screen would not load and I had to reset. And sometimes the back up camera takes a while to load. Also a few times the Bluetooth didn’t detect my phone being nearby to unlock the car and I have to open the app to unlock. I also love that it is keyless and uses the phone to unlock. It makes it so I never forget to take my phone with me.

Not everyone knows how to use this car, I have had to take it in because valet did not know how to charge it and messed up the outlet. This car is super comfortable and economical. Tesla model 3. Cameras and other features.
It has a bunch of useless but fun features such as the fireplace and games, but it really is a great car. Extremely smooth and quiet. If you are a fan of motor sounds, do not buy a tesla. The tesla has cameras at almost every angle, ensuring protection even when you are not paying attention. Really helps you while you are parking because the car can sense what’s on the side without you turning around to check. (still should be turning and looking tho).

Despite his off the field antics, must is a genius! This car is simple.
Stepping into a model 3 is like stepping 10 to 30 years into the future. The car is that much more advanced and futuristic than any traditional gas powered car. It is a revelation. The most impressive thing is probably the instant torque. There’s no delay - because there’s no gas to convert to energy. No transmission. Virtually nothing between pressing the throttle and the wheels turning. It is amazingly direct power. The other notable impression is the shocking lack of buttons and complexity in the cabin. The driver just has a steering wheel and a center screen. What is it. Spend a few moments in a model 3 and it becomes obvious that traditional car interiors are way too complicated. The cabin is also a lot more spacious and airy than anything else in its class. This car is simply the future. It is where all cars need to go, but will not get there for another decade or more. The tesla model 3 is that future.

Working out the kinks in 2018, car is still my favorite of all time.
The ordering process was all online and there was zero negotiating needed. Buying my tesla was like buying clothes online-- order what you want, pay online and prepare for delivery. The car buying experience was the easiest I have ever had. When I took delivery in 2018, there were a few scratches on the inside console and it took a few months to get that part replaced by tesla roadside. I have had to replace 2 tires due to running over bolts and construction debris. I think the heavy weight of the car makes it susceptible to have bolts in your tires. Luckily, tesla roadside allows for repairs on your schedule. I was able to have a tire repaired while I was out at brunch with friends so it is ultra convenient for small repairs. Someone hit my car and left a large scratch on the side in 2018. It took several weeks for the parts to come in so I was in a rental car (non electric) for 5 weeks. I really didn't like having to wait so long for parts. The repair was done at a tesla approved body shop, not a tesla service center. I think now there is a local tesla bodyshop, so I hope future repairs are not as time consuming.

Radio issues and difficulty in contacting customer service/repair department.
My first problem with tesla is with the difficulty in contacting their service department and getting questions answered and / or scheduling a service appointment. Secondly, I have been having on and off issues with the radio. There has been times when the radio will get stuck on just one station and will not allow me to change to a different station. Usually rebooting the entire car will fix the problem, but I shouldn't have to do that, I think.

Life is too short, drive a tesla.
The model 3 is a fun car to drive because it goes from 0-60 so quickly. I am able to charge the car at home with a 220 with no problems. On the road it takes about 30 -45 mins to get a full charge from a supercharger. The screen is easy to use and very intuitive. Autopilot is pretty good and has gotten better over the last 2 years. It really only has problems with a wider part of a lane on the highway. I would highly recommend driving a tesla.

Tesla 3 Love - No Gas station for me
EVERYTHING! It is great to go out town for a long trip and just to the store. Very guilt free (no gas). And beautiful inside. The sound is very quiet and looks great outside. I have not gone to gas station in almost a year. It is honestly the best purchased our family has made. Very happy with this purchase.

Tesla's are awesome and only get better with time.
Con: front windshield cracks easily. Pro: drives awesome. Fast acceleration, safe, comfortable, awesome technology, get updates frequently - no other car gets better after you buy it. My car is faster and has longer range now then when I purchased it... That is unheard of.

Fast electric car with a good touch screen and amazing range.
Problems: software bugs. Nothing game-changing but just minor inconveniences. Performance: fantastic handling and speed. Reliability: 8/10. Sometimes takes too long for car to turn on. Comfort: 10/10 no issues. Features: lots of high-tech features you would expect. Autopilot costs extra.

Tesla the best car ever to purchase.
The most easiest and simple car ever. This car has no maintenance besides breaks, tired and windshield fluid. Best part about it is the autopilot. Would highly recommend it for a commenter car. But the back is small, therefore, if you have more than 4 people in your family wouldn’t recommend it.

Dramatic redefinition of motoring. A marvel of automotive engineering utilizing the most advanced technology Wrapped in a beautiful skin.
Very few minor problems taken care of in my driveway by mobile service technicians. Exhilarating performance, continually improved functionality via free over the air upgrades. Environmental impact much lower than internal combustion transportation.

Truly minimalistic interior with almost all function on the touchscreen.
Car has been fantastic, I have never had any issues and I am an early adopter of the model 3. I have used the car as a daily driver and charge mostly at home. I have driven short and long distance and have never had to worry about “range anxiety” due to tesla’s massive charging infrastructure.

Tesla model 3 most efficient midsize luxury sedan.
Tesla model 3 is an awesome car. The inside is minimalistic with one central display. Despite reports of road noise, I'd say it's a quiet ride. I have the rear wheel drive which handles fine in snow. Interior is spacious, seats are comfortable. I added the heated seat package. Downsides: when it rains heavily, some water can run down the roof into the trunk when opened. There is an aftermarket accessory you can purchase to fix this. In the cold, beware the battery is less efficient but not significantly. I enjoy the freedom of charging at home and avoiding trips to the gas station and savings on car maintenance and gas.

Cost saving and fast car!
I love that I can charge my car right in my garage. It only takes about 5-6 hours for a complete charge from almost empty to 90% full. Each of these charge cost about $25 on our electric bill. The pick up of this car is incredible, no more lagging from stopped to go.

Love my tesla model 3. It is the best car I have ever had.
Love this car. Each software update gives new features. It is like getting a new car each time. I have not had any major problems. Just once tesla sent a mechanic to my home to fix the seat belt sensor. I charge it in my garage by plugging it into my dryer outlet. I only had to buy an adapter to do this. It costs only about $3 to charge the car.

Very reliable, low maintenance, and no gas.
First month of ownership vehicle was in the shop for a month to replace a faulty power line. Tesla proved me with a new 7 series BMW. The tesla is super quick 0 to 60 in under 4 seconds. Long trips are very easy, a trip to Virginia I stopped once for a 20 minute charger.
