2017 Toyota Tacoma Review: Expensive But Reliable Small Truck

Alex Showalter
Feb 25, 2022

2017 is a good year for the Tacoma, lasting over 350,000 miles with only rare transmission issues. At $25,700 – 43,817 it’s expensive, but worth it for the quality.

likeFilled The Good
Outstanding long-lasting engines, has high-quality interior materials and off-road performance is great.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Passenger room is very cramped in the back seats, the base 4-cylinder engine is weak and there are transmission software issues.

2017 Toyota Tacoma: Key Points

  • Reliability ratings are great, but there are some transmission computer issues. Buyers should avoid the 2016 model with more complaints, and go with a 2017 or newer.
  • A weak four-cylinder engine and a more powerful V6 are available.
  • Fuel economy is average, at up to 21 mpg combined.
  • Safety ratings are okay, getting four out of five stars in government crash tests.
  • We recommend the 2017 Tacoma for its dependable motors and off-road capabilities. The Tacoma ranks 1st out of five compact trucks based on owner reviews.

It is very reliable and safe.
I love the size of my truck. I love the gas mileage of my truck. I love the towing capacity of my truck.

They do not put enough leaf springs so it makes the outside of the truck squeak.
I love that it drives so smoothly, and I also love the body style of it. I do not like the gas mileage.

Great all around truck
This is my 4th tacoma and is by far the best in all areas

Drives great. Handles really well.
Handles very good. Not too big and not too small. Gas mileage good. Does not have power seats and started not to buy it for that reason alone. Do hope future Tacomas have power seats. If not, may have to look at something else. Really like the way it handles.

The perfect daily truck!!
Toyota Tacoma cannot be beat for reliability. Toyota has always carried that reputation, I took a 4-hour trip recently and the fuel economy and comfort really impressed me. Paired with the great infotainment system, this is just an all-around great truck. I couldn't have made a better or more educated purchase.
accountCircle George J
That the quality of the truck is excellent.
Looks great, very good quality, up to dates options, color is really nice, handles very good on the highway, very comfortable to drive.

My thoughts on the 2017 Toyota Tacoma trd sport.
My black 2017 Toyota Tacoma trd is really amazing. It is my daily driver. It is perfect for carrying any type of cargo on the back. The seats are super comfortable. There is good legroom in the passenger seats. The radio is a touch screen and you can connect your to your phone and play music! Unfortunately there is no sunroof. The Toyota Tacoma is perfect for a family of 4 or 5.

My vehicle is a manual five speed and it shifts nicely.
I have no problems with my vehicle. It runs great and is very reliable. The interior is nice and it has good features included with the truck. The air conditioning keeps up well in the Arizona summers and it cools down fast when the vehicle is first started.

Worst truck ever
Very uncomfortable seat, wacky transmission, weird engine power band. Looking to move on and get rid of this truck

Transfer Case Leak
At 9,500 miles, the transfer case began leaking transmission fluid. Toyota pulled the transfer case and replaced the gasket that divides the transfer case housing. Now 6 months later (16,000 miles), the transfer case is leaking again; doesn’t follow Tacoma’s past history of being one of the most reliable mid-size trucks on the market. Maybe I got a lemon; extremely frustrating.
accountCircle Wendy T
Dependable truck with noisy, bouncy ride.
Very reliable; always starts and requires no maintenance (except for the usual oil changes, tires, brakes, etc.) It is noisy on the road and has a bouncy uncomfortable ride. I suppose this is expected for a pickup truck. The bed is big and has plenty of room for hauling stuff - we do a lot of DIY projects at home.

I regret my purchase...
At 17.5 mpg in my 2017 with the v6 engine( which is nothing to brag about) I think it needs a larger fuel tank considering it only has a 380 mile range. I hate to think about the mpg whilst towing a trailer. Also, the auto trans needs more gears or a better program to eliminate the constant hunting for gear at 55mph which is annoying. The entune audio system has bugs which are well noted, Toyota will not address the issue. I wish I had waited for the Ford Ranger or considered the GM or Chevy. I've been buying the Toyota brand for over 25 years and this was my last.
accountCircle Kelby N
Weak engine, annoying windshield wipers.
Not enough power in the engine. It has very poor gas mileage. It has only two speeds on wipers, air conditioner works well. Not a very comfortable ride. Cruise control at 70 causes engine to downshift at any slight hill. Bluetooth will connect to two phones at the same time.

Things I hate about my new 2017 Toyota Tacoma- I miss my 2005 version.
I liked the older model better. The seat belt alarm beeps 58 times before it stops beeping. If I park my truck and walk around to the driver side door, I have to use unlock it with the key fob before able to open it. The hood scoop is at a bad angle as it reflects sunlight into my eyes while driving. When trying to accelerate really quickly, the energy saving feature, unless disabled, makes it very difficult.

Top Critics Reviews

  • Consumer Reports finds the truck to be tough and durable with above-average owner satisfaction ratings.
  • Edmunds rates the Tacoma at four out of five for its rugged off-road capabilities, but noting the V6 is not very responsive.
  • Kelley Blue Book gives the truck a 4.4 out of 5, mentioning it’s reliable, but has a low towing capacity.

What Problems Does the 2017 Toyota Tacoma Have?

Problems found on the Tacoma include transmission issues, some engine rpms jumping, and chipping paint. There are fewer complaints on the 2018 model, costing about $4,000 more.

Transmission problems, including not shifting properly, are a common complaint on trucks with around 10,000 miles. Toyota issued a technical service bulletin to install new software, which usually fixes the issue.

Engine surging is a rare issue appearing in the first 1,000 miles. Usually it’s a software issue which causes the engine’s rpms to jump, but in some cases it also can be caused by low quality fuel.

Chipping and peeling paint is another complaint at around 30,000 miles. They develop over time when paint is not properly cared for. The only solution is repainting the affected areas at a cost of $1,000 per panel.

There are five recalls, average for a truck. Recalls include the rear differential, crank position sensor, labels, brake assist vacuum pump, and fuel pump. The most serious recall is the fuel pump since it can cause the engine to stall.

How Much is the 2017 Toyota Tacoma Worth?

Blue book prices range from $25,700 – 43,817, making the Tacoma more expensive than the Frontier and Colorado. When new, prices were $24,575 to $43,215. A Tacoma is one of the rare vehicles that has appreciated in current market conditions.

How Long Will the 2017 Toyota Tacoma Last?

A properly maintained Tacoma should be able to last over 350,000 miles, which is 100,000 miles more than a Canyon or Frontier. Repair Pal estimates regular annual maintenance costs to be reasonable for a truck, at $551 per year.

As a Tacoma hits 100,000 miles, owners should prepare to replace items including air conditioning pressure switches for $300, suspension bushings costing $500, and oxygen sensors which cost $400.

  • An optional upgrade is a powerful 3.5L V6 with 278 horsepower and 265 lb.-ft. of torque.

What Color Options are Available?

How Big is the Tacoma?

The 2017 Tacoma is a compact truck, similar in size to the Frontier and Colorado. Two cabin configurations are available including a small 4-door access cab and larger four-door double cab. Passenger room is cramped, with limited legroom in the back seats of both cabin choices.

Two bed lengths are also available including a five-foot short bed, and a 6.1-foot standard bed.

Centered wide dash shot

How Does the 2017 Toyota Tacoma Compare to Other Trucks?

A very close competitor is the more affordable Chevy Colorado. The Colorado offers more power and a higher towing capacity, but the Tacoma is a longer-lasting choice. If you don’t plan on towing then the Tacoma is a better choice long term.

Another rival is the lower-priced Honda Ridgeline. Where the Ridgeline stands out is with better on-road comfort, but the Tacoma is better off-road. If you want an SUV with a bed, the Ridgeline is good, but if you want a real truck then go with a Tacoma.

Final Verdict: Is the 2017 Toyota Tacoma a Good Truck?

Yes, the Tacoma gets a rating of 4.7/5 based on many positive owner reviews mentioning great off-road capabilities, updated technology, and no widespread mechanical problems.

2017 is a good year for the Tacoma, but the newer 20182021 models do have fewer complaints and come with the new transmission software which fixes the shifting issues.

Problem with hubcaps staying on sometimes, mediocre gas mileage, smooth ride and nice interior, comfortable seats, nice color selection, quiet engine, nice technology capabilities, easy steering, also the 4 wheel drive option is really nice to have. Plenty of cupholders.

Love the towing capacity. Love the steering wheel hands free buttons. The maintenance is a little costly. I drive a lot and go through oil and tires often. It is a very reliable vehicle. Wish I had more cargo space. I really enjoy having the cargo bed lights and moveable tie down eyes on the rail.

Toyota Tacoma. Built to last, at an affordable price. Gas mileage is top notch.
My Toyota Tacoma is a very good, cost efficient truck. It gets wonderful gas mileage and it is pretty durable for a truck in its class. It is not the most powerful truck, but for normal hauling and driving, it is great. I really recommend the Toyota Tacoma if you want a truck that is all around affordable, and you want to keep it for many years.

It is completely reliable! It is a truck so it can be bumpy but all and all a comfortable ride. Easy to tow things and can carry lots of things. It is great in winter weather as well. If you are in the market for a truck Toyota is a really fun ride. There are also small back seats.

It does not have a lot. Of power. The sport hood is annoying. Not a lot of room in the back for extended cab. But the ride is really smooth and it is very reliable. It takes premium gas which is annoying. The technology features are really awesome. The cloth seats are ok, and clean pretty easily. Not a lot of cargo room or space.

Quick thoughts on owning a Toyota Tacoma.
I love the gas mileage and the overall feel of the truck. It is got the usage of a truck but feels like your driving a car. Toyota offers lots of trim levels to choose from. Also the aftermarket selection for the vehicle is amazing. I would definitely buy the next version up after I am done with it. Never had backup camera before but find it a necessity now. The truck is just a good looking truck, and enough to get most jobs done.

The Toyota Tacoma is my forever favorite vehicle.
I love my Toyota Tacoma. I have 45,000 miles on it and I do not have any complaints. I have no problem passing cars, even on hills it has plenty of power. I have pulled a trailer loaded with bikes and had the bed filled with camping stuff and it was very easy to handle driving. I have had to take the bed cover off by myself and it is heavy but I was able to do it alone. I have not taken it off roading or in the snow yet but I have used the 4 wheel drive in the winter when it is freezing and the truck drove great. I felt very safe. I am 5 feet 7 inches tall and this truck is very easy to get in and out. I do not have to duck my head and I just slide right out without having to push myself up to get out of the seat. The middle console is easy to access while I am in my seat. I have rode passenger in the back seat a couple times and it is very comfortable. I am going to have this truck until I die!

Toyota Tacoma! Bent spindle? Broken AC!
I bought my 2017 Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4 in August 2016. I have the extended service plan to 60,000 miles. The only issue with the truck was I had a broke AC fan. It was replaced with no issues. Toyota released a recall to fix the issue after my was replace and they would not clear my recall as it was repaired before the recall. For months I tried to get them to clear it and they could not. They finally replaced the AC fan again to clear the recall. I take my truck off-roading often and I would say the spindles seem a little week as I was going down the trail and I hit a small berm and I bent the spindle. Toyota would not replace it under warranty so I had to pay out of pocket for the repairs.

I love everything about my Tacoma
For the most part, I love everything about my Tacoma but there are a few things I would change with it. First thing, I do not like the starvation control constantly being on. I wish there was a way to disable it easier. You have to be completely stopped when disabling it. Typically if I want to disable it, I am in mud and do not want to come to a complete stop to turn it off. Second, the Tacoma just lacks power. The pedal is not very responsive. When using etc mode, you get that extra power needed. Overall, I am very impressed with the Toyota Tacoma.

Toyota tacoma is the way to go.
What I like about this truck is that you can use it for any convenience such moving houses and being able to store many things in the bed of the truck. Could also store things in the long run since there is a cover to cover the bed of the truck. The only one thing I dislike about it is the breaks. The breaks are too sensitive which makes one jerk the car when trying to stop. Also, it would be better to have a little more leg spaces in the second row.

I have had the truck for about 8 months. Bought used at 35k miles and have since driven it to over 70k with 0 issues. It has not missed a beat whether I am daily driving it, rock crawling, hauling, or anything in between. This is the first vehicle I have owned that truly gives me the confidence to go anywhere in any conditions and not have to fear getting stranded. The ride quality is fairly stiff/bouncy which may not suit some, but the trade-off is that it corners better than any other pickup in my experience and has a massive payload/tow rating for a midsize truck. Safe to say I am hooked on Tacoma.

The vehicle is tan which in the west Texas area looks amazing.
The 2017 Tacoma is one of the best vehicles that I have enjoyed driving. The smooth ride is something I thoroughly enjoy especially on bumpy streets. I am short and this truck has made it a convenient way for me to have a truck but still not struggle seeing over the steering wheel.

Fun truck. Best of small truck market.
This is a great little truck. The mpg are not the best but I knew that going into it. I opted for the trd sport because of the hood scoop. It comes with sunroof and jbl radio and a good interface on the radio. Lots of bells. I had a c300 Mercedes before this.

Best trucks around for on and off road
Really love all of the off-road options of the third gen Tacoma's including the multi terrain selection, crawl control, rear diff lock and of course 4X4. Has a very high clarity big touch screen with an easy to use reverse and blind spot monitoring system. Con with the leather seats in Arizona is the vehicle comes with heated only seats not cooled. Sitting on black leather in toasty AZ is not fun.

Tacoma's are Worth the Price
4wd performs really well. Smooth ride. Great stereo. Outlet in truck bed is really useful. The center console is not well thought out. Windshield is short so taller people will have issues seeing around rearview mirror. Love the sunroof.

Great truck. Will buy again.
Musk smells from ac after running it for a significant period of time. Engine makes a clicking noise. Otherwise no problems. The smell and clicking noise are both common to tacoma’s and not a major problem. Great truck and very happy with it. Will buy again.

Love the Tacoma! It is the most reliable and useful vehicle I have ever had.
I love driving the Tacoma! Not only do I feel safe driving it, but it has a roomie back seat and the truck bed has been so useful of many occasions including camping, moving, traveling. It is a reliable car, other than the routine oil changes and routine maintenance, it has not needed any additional work and has no issues.

It is very functional and the gas mileage is pretty decent for a pick up truck.
I like the overall functionality. The truck bed, the touch screen, push to start, wheels, Bluetooth, seats, etc. I do not really dislike anything.

Nice leather and decent mpg for a truck.
The Toyota Tacoma limited model is for truck owners who still want some luxury. My model has Bluetooth and navigation, which always come in handy. Although the gas mileage is not ideal, it is not the worst for a truck and I get about 22 mpg on the freeway. I have not had any problems with my truck.
