2019 Acura RDX Review: Unreliable Compact Luxury SUV With Some Costly Mechanical Issues

Alex Showalter
Sep 14, 2023

The 2019 Acura RDX lasts around 150,000 miles with some engine and brake issues reported. At $25,200 to $34,999, it’s less expensive than some competitors, but still a bad choice when you may wind up spending thousands to fix engine problems.

The cabin has a lot of passenger room, there’s a ton of standard safety technology features and handling is responsive.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The stereo system controls are tricky, there’s only one engine offered and there are more mechanical issues than in earlier years.

Is the 2019 Acura RDX a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 7/10 – 2019 is a bad year for the Acura RDX since it has more mechanical problems than any other year. Owner reviews complain about the engine stalling, stereo system issues, along with some rare oil leaks.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – Interior materials are good for a luxury SUV in its price range, the seats are comfortable on long trips, cargo space is also excellent.
  • Reliability 7/10 – There are some engine problems reported from 2019 RDX owners, which can be expensive to fix. Models from 20132018 are good, as are models from 2020 to 2022, the 2019 version is the only bad year.
  • Performance 8/10 – Performance is good from the standard turbocharged four-cylinder engine which has more power than a lot of the other small SUVs on the market.
  • Safety 9/10 – The 2019 RDX is safe, earning a perfect 5-star rating in government crash tests. It comes standard with adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, along with a rearview camera. Optional upgrades include a head-up display and parking sensors.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is okay at up to 24 MPG giving 410 miles of range out of the 17.1 gallon tank. Gas costs are $12 higher than average at $244 per month.
  • Value 7/10 – The 2019 Acura RDX is cheaper than some other luxury SUVs, although some mechanical problems lower its overall value score as it ages.

Comfortable and reliable.
Performs great, very comfortable seats. Love all the storage and extra features. Very much worth it to get the upgraded package with all of the safety features such as lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control. Reliable car. Sport mode keeps me happy.

2019 Acura rdx best car ever.
It is a very comfortable car to drive. Can see well out the windows. It handles well in the rain. Great reliability. Only brought in for oil changes. It uses regular gasoline, so no not need to pay extra for gasoline. Speakers are very clear. Air conditioning system works very well and cools the car quickly on very hot days.

The Acura is reliable and safe vehicle. It also looks sporty on the outside.
I absolutely love driving an Acura. It is a safe and reliable car. However, it has all the bells and whistles too. The seats are very comfortable and I'drives amazing. I love having the back up camera. One of my favorite features is the apple car play. It makes using the maps very simple and easy. The only thing that I do not love is that the remote does not have a start button.

Acura rdx: smart choice smart value.
Overall, the Acura rdx is a reliable and sturdy vehicle. The interior is spacious and there is adequate leg room and space on the driver’s side. The dashboard/monitor is well lit and offers a menu that displays trip info, tire pressure, maintenance schedule, tire pressure and other details. Acura does well to offer hands free dialing of phone numbers and easy steering wheel access to manage phone calls, radio volume and manipulating changing of radio stations, etc. Acura presents a smooth response ride. The downside to this car is understanding the maintenance schedule as it has an a and b schedule. The car seems to need frequent oil changes in contrast to the standard 3500-5000 miles. Based on the schedule, one must have an oil change much sooner.

RDX 2019 is Amazing
Wow, what a beautiful ride. I'm really shocked to read some of the reviews and how lame people are as to the complaints with having to use premium gas or the fact some idiot can't parallel park. Grow up idiots!!!

Finally both luxury and comfort, in an SUV, at an affordable price tag.
I love my Acura RDX. It's the perfect size. Bigger than a typical crossover but not huge to where you feel like you're driving a tank. It feels so safe and has a ton of safety features. I love the sunroof how it goes all the way back and so does my 10 month old daughter! It's sleek and very updated as this is the newer model. The seats are so comfortable. I sit in traffic two hours a day and this car saves me!

I made the switch and I'm so happy!
I recently switched from a Volvo to an Acura and I love it. The interior is beautiful, comfortable and roomy. The safety features are great and I love the technology this car offers. I was intimidated at first, but it is really user friendly. The standard features of the car are great. The extended sunroof is wonderful and makes driving so much fun! Am very happy I went with the Acura RDX.

Acura RDX - BEST CAR EVER (and every hearing impaired should have ONE)
The exterior of the car is nice as the design looks clean and neat. As for the interior, there are several features that grabs my attentions. I like the fact when the car automatically stop when there's another car nearby, have Apple Carplay, and the seats are extremely comfortable to sit on.

Infotainment System Has Many Issues
The infotainment system has not worked to 100% since the first day I picked it up which is over a year. Blue tooth and Apple Car Play do not work just to list two if many issues. I am told it’s a nationwide problem that Acura is working on. Really? I escalated with Acura and the dealership with no real results. How would you feel to be paying for something that does not work?

The RDX is a nice looking vehicle and rides pretty well. I have owned this vehicle for almost a year and have only about 9000 miles on it. Thus far, this car has been in for service more times in under a year than 12 years of a combined total of non-routine service calls owning various Infiniti vehicles! The main source of issues involving the infotainment system. System errors almost daily. Take it in for a fix and on way home from dealer service, same thing happens again. Android compatibility was promised by end of September 2018, still not available. Not once in past year have I been able to achieve advertised gas mileage. Its been nothing but a headache. If I took vehicle in for service every time I got an error message I would be there multiple times a week. Regret purchasing this vehicle. Just getting lots of excuses from Acura service.

There are many problems .
The worst car that I have had. Hand door was not unlock or lock automatically even thouh it was replaced. The sensor of edge is very sensortive, it works on wrong situation.

What Do Critics Say About the Acura RDX?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2019 Acura RDX offers a modern inferior paired with agile handling, but it only gets average owner satisfaction scores as it ages.
  • Edmunds rates the RDX at 3.3/5, enjoying the responsive steering, but doesn’t like that there’s only one engine choice available.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the 2019 RDX a 4/5, praising the advanced safety features, but owners don’t like the light brake pedal feel.

What Common Problems Does the 2019 Acura RDX Have?

Common problems found on the 2019 Acura RDX include the engine going into limp mode, excessive brake noise, along with the stereo system freezing. Overall, these issues are worse than some other compact luxury SUVs on the market, although repair costs are not as high as some competitors.

The engine going into limp mode is the most serious complaint from 2019 Acura RDX owners, showing up at around 2,500 miles. Usually limp mode is caused by computer issues, but can also be a sign of mechanical problems with the engine. The first thing to do is turn the vehicle on and off to see if it fixes it. If it does not, then you will need to use an OBD-II scan tool to diagnose the source of the problem, which can range from software updates to damaged sensors. Fixing it can cost $100 to $650.

Excessive brake noise is another problem mentioned by 2019 RDX owners, showing up at around 10,000 miles. The front brake pads tend to wear down quicker than on some other SUVs, leading to more metal-on-metal noise. Replacing the brake pads costs around $250, while new rotors are an additional $550.

The stereo system freezing has also been reported on the 2019 RDX within the first 1,000 miles. Software problems usually cause the stereo to freeze up. Most dealerships will install the latest stereo system software updates for free, while others charge around $50 for labor.

There are three recalls on the 2019 RDX, which is similar to other small SUVs on the market. The most serious two recalls cover the fuel pump, which may fail. Acura will replace the fuel pump on affected models for free. The other recall covers the seat belt buckle, which Acura will also replace.

How Long Will the 2019 Acura RDX Last?

A well-maintained 2019 Acura RDX can last around 150,000 miles, which is shorter than other luxury SUVs like the Lexus NX. Regular annual maintenance costs are lower than some competitors, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $427 per year.

As a used 2019 RDX reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history report, owners should be prepared to replace the serpentine belt for $150, windshield wiper motor costing $266, along with the timing chain tensioner which costs $500.

accountCircle Sandy W

So far I don't have any problem with my vehicle. It performs well and is reliable to their promise. The vehicle is highly recommendable to others.

How Is the Technology?

Standard entertainment technology is very good with a relatively large 10.2-inch central display featuring Acura’s true touchpad interface with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Optional upgrades include navigation, and more powerful 12 or 16-speaker stereo systems.

Safety technology across all models is great, offering:

  • Rearview camera
  • Forward collision warning
  • Lane keep assist
  • Lane departure warning
  • Adaptive Cruise control
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Road departure mitigation

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Head-up display
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Surround-view parking camera system
  • Blind spot monitoring

Is the 2019 Acura RDX a Good Value?

No, the 2019 Acura RDX is not a good value since it has more problems than other compact SUVs on the market. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $25,200 to $34,999, making it less than a BMW X3 or Audi Q5. When new, the price range was $37,400 to $47,500. Depreciation is similar to some other luxury SUVs, losing about 10% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Acura RDX?

The RDX is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates an impressive 272 horsepower at up to 24 MPG. This engine is paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission which provides smooth and timely shifts. Performance-wise, the RDX can sprint from 0 to 60 MPH in roughly 6.6 seconds, offering a quick driving experience for a small SUV.

What Colors Does the Acura RDX Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Acura RDX?

The 2019 Acura RDX stands out in the luxury compact SUV segment for its emphasis on comfort and a plush riding experience. The interior boasts high-quality materials throughout, giving it a premium and sophisticated feel. Passengers are treated to spacious and supportive seats, which are especially beneficial on longer journeys. The front seats, often available with heating, ventilation, and power-adjustable features, ensure tailored comfort for diverse body types.

Furthermore, the cabin is impressively quiet, thanks to effective sound insulation and active noise cancellation, which minimizes road and wind noise, enhancing the overall driving and riding experience. The suspension is tuned to strike a balance between sportiness and comfort, making sure that the vehicle remains stable and composed, even on rough terrains. Ample legroom and headroom for both front and rear passengers further elevate the sense of space and ease. Added to this, the dual-zone automatic climate control, panoramic sunroof, and top-notch infotainment system all contribute to making journeys in the RDX both relaxing and enjoyable. The 2019 Acura RDX is a testament to luxury, combining comfort and functionality seamlessly.

How Much Storage Space Does the Acura RDX Have?

The 2019 Acura RDX offers a generous amount of storage space that suits a variety of needs, particularly for those who lead an active lifestyle or frequently travel. The RDX provides around 29.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats. With this space, one can comfortably stow multiple suitcases, a stroller, or even some sports equipment such as golf clubs.

For even larger hauling needs, when the second-row seats are folded down, that space expands to roughly 58.9 cubic feet, making it suitable for larger items like a bicycle or furniture. Additionally, the Acura RDX boasts an array of smaller interior storage solutions. There are convenient door pockets, a spacious glove compartment, and a center console that can hold smaller items like smartphones, wallets, and drinks, guaranteeing that everything has its place and is within easy reach. This combination of space and convenience makes the RDX a competitive choice for those in the market for a luxury compact SUV.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The third generation of the Acura RDX was introduced for the 2019 model year.

2015: No major updates from earlier years.

2016: Redesigned front grille with new headlights, a new touchscreen, along with additional safety technology features.

2017: Has the same features found on the 2016 model.

2018: No changes from earlier years.

2019: Fully redesigned for the third generation with new engines, technology, and exterior styling.

2020: No changes from last year’s full redesign.

2021: New PMC limited-edition model introduced.

How Does the Acura RDX Compare to the Competition?

The 2019 Acura RDX is a bad compact SUV since it has more complaints from owners than other years, making it one that buyers should avoid in favor of something newer.

The Acura MDX is a larger SUV offered by Acura which can be found for about $3,500 more. Passenger room is better in the Acura MDX, while the Acura RDX offers a sportier driving experience. We recommend the Acura MDX since it has fewer complaints from owners for the 2019 model year.

The Lexus NX is a popular competitor, which is available for around $2,000 more. Interior materials are more luxurious in the Lexus NX, while the Acura RDX has a more powerful engine. We recommend the Lexus NX since there are less mechanical issues reported by owners.

Acura rdx, give me a brake!
This car is decent, but I have had a problem with the brakes squealing since I bought it. I have taken it to the dealer to get fixed, but they cannot seem to find a solution. At this point I am thinking about complaining to the corporate office. Overall, the car has a smooth ride, but the brakes are a real problem.

The rdx drives well. It handles nicely for the most part. I hate that sometimes the car brakes on its own when no other vehicles are around. Also there have been times the car sounds like it is stuck in neutral when it is in drive and the engine will start revving while the car is in motion.

Acura rdx a-spec package. New tech is not always preferred.
The main problem I have had with this vehicle is the button gear changes. It is awkward and the stick is preferred. Something that is questionable is that the backseat/trunk area make clicking noises often when backing out or going over bumps/potholes. It gets great gas mileage, especially for longer trips. The low lights that turn on at night are comfortable. The heating and cooling seats are great. The moon roof is not personally preferred. Performance has been better than expected with the different driving and comfort modes.

Safe comfortable all round car
This car drives very smooth and I love the amount of space there is in both the front, back and the trunk. The back seats fall to allow for more room when you need it, which definitely helped when moving into college. The rear view camera allows you to see quite the distance away as well. Over all, the car is safe, It doesn't go fast unless you really press hard on that accelerator which is actually a good thing in comparison to cars that speed up without you even realizing it.

No problems to date. Love how it lets me know when maintenance is needed. Like the different drive modes. Like vents in the back for my toddler. Love the auto start from my phone. I live in AZ so this comes in handy. Like the heated and cooling seats. Use premium unleaded in the rdx.
Lost power in engine, turned it off and restarted with full power. Dealership replaced the spark plugs and blamed it on my use of non premium gas. They said best to use premium which is recommended but not required. No other problems after that. This Acura is a very fine automobile.

Love this car! Great small SUV option that gets good gas mileage, is very stylish, has all the amenities I would want. It also has plenty of room in the trunk as is, but the seats folding down allow me to fit anything extra I would need. The Acura rdx is overall a great car. It has good and comfortable seats and speakers that will let you be in paradise. Great comfort and features. Especially the autopilot feature is amazing. The back seat spacing is great compared to many other SUVs I tried. The panoramic rooftop is great for trips. The touchpad is a little tough in the beginning but once you get used it is great.

Acura rdx great look, feel, and features!
My car is very comfortable and love that it has light interior. The gas mileage is good considering I do mostly street driving and rarely any freeway. I like that on the drive button, it gives me an option to click it and go into sport mode automatically in case I ever were to need it, and it also has a brake hold feature, so when I am at a light I just press down on the brakes and it stays for me.

Too Many Problems & Unresponsive Transmission
I have had my 2019 RDX for slightly over a year now and it is back at the dealership again for an infotainment system that simply goes blank but then keeps the display on until the battery dies. I have had to have the car jumped twice now just to get it out of my garage and too the dealership. My wife drives a 2015 Lexus RX350 as has had not one slight issue and my RDX has now performed even worse than the Buick Regal I got rid of to purchase the RDX. Simply disappointing and something that should never happen. And the transmission is very unresponsive from a stop which creates a great annoyance. I was considering saving a bunch of money and buying a Hyundai but went for the Acura instead. I won't make that mistake again.

I love my primary vehicle. It is reliable, gorgeous and completely fulfills my demand. It is performance is overall overwhelming since I buy it. I enjoy long driving through it. Even now, I do not have any problem regarding it. I am very happy with it and enjoy my driving very much.

Impressive luxury SUV with pep.
The Acura rdx handles like a turbo sports car. The acceleration from a stop or on the move is impressive. The standard features are amazing, but adding the technology package is a wonderful upgrade. The only negative I have is the location of the blind spot indicator. It is currently located inside the vehicle. I feel it should be placed in the side mirrors as they are in every other vehicle. This way the cars passing you know that you know they are there.

It is versatile for long distance travelling and reliable.
There is rarely any problems with the Acura, my family and I love the car. We use it to go anywhere for trips or vacations. Even just driving around it's a nice car, seats are comfortable and relaxing. The Acura is reliable and I do not see many problems with it if any at all. It's on the smaller end of SUVs but I like a smaller car, its performance is very good and has Bluetooth features.

Rdx is one of the least expensive vehicles spending $3,200.
Acura's third-generation rdx impresses us with its powerful turbocharged engine, improved handling from chassis upgrades and added noise suppression, and also its standard advanced safety features. Acura added more sound-deadening materials and a new noise-cancellation system, called active sound control, to all rdx trims. The advance trim gets even more sound-absorbing materials. These efforts have paid dividends as the new rdx is very quiet.

The most amazing and reliable car.
I love my car because it is very reliable. I enjoy the different modes it offers. My favorite is the sport mode. It is also different from traditional cars I have seen because the drive, reverse, park, and neutral are buttons. I also love the apple play feature. It allows me to play my music without touching my phone. In addition, the screen it not touch screen, so it will not distract the driver.

The panoramic moon roof makes the rdx special.
The rdx is extremely comfortable and fun to drive. I love all of the modern features like automatic lights, heat warmers and cooler, and the entertainment system. The best part is the sun/moonroof. The panoramic moonroof lets you see so much of the sky. Overall, it is a luxury vehicle that is more than worth its price.

My Acura rdx is worth every penny!
The Acura rdx is great! Super comfy to drive. Everything is within reach. Gas mileage is great. Everything about the vehicle makes you feel like you are driving in style and luxury without the crazy luxury prices. All the controls are easy to understand and the look and feel is amazing.

I love this brand. Excellent Acura.
A vehicle that has technological characteristics like Acura is unmatched. I love this brand. It can also be said that Toyota has specific qualities that give the user an impressive state of comfort. I also love this brand. Very good I love this brand.

The future of cars: Acura rdx.
I love my 2019 Acura rdx. In particular, the assistive cruise control and brake hold options make driving far more seamless and the apple CarPlay makes viewing directions, playing music and making calls incredibly easy and efficient. I could not recommend this car more.

Everything a girl would want with safety of mind in a parent.
Want a digital speedometer option in driver dash. Wish cup holders were tad bigger. The tire randomly deflates slowly over 6 month period. Not much I can really explain why I have issue. I love my rdx. The trunk bed should not have isolated the compartment and the flat tire pump as it is a waste of space.

The redesigned rdx has a cool futuristic look and feel to it.
I love all the features of the redesigned rdx. The panoramic roof, user friendly touch pad, and the ease of switching from different driving modes. The drive is smooth and filled with plenty of safety features. The a-spec package has pretty black rims.

You will love the rdx and all of its features.
This vehicle rides so well. I have back issues, and with the special seat lumbar support I can ride in this all day long and not have a backache. The rdx has a high safety ranking. I love all of the safety features. The tech package provides a wonderful sound system. The ride is very smooth and makes driving a breeze!

Oil leak
2019 rdx with 12,000 miles now leaks transmission fluid or oil on garage floor. We won’t even get into the useless app.

Acura review. I love the base model very much.
The vehicle is very reliable but it has bad gas mileage have had it for 2 years has held up and got me to and from work. Very nice for a 2019 vehicle. Really enjoy the base model do not need the extra accessories the vehicle does not do well in the mountains.

The Acura rdx, less cool than the tiguan.
I like the Acura rdx, however, I miss the storage of the VW tiguan. VW has a 2nd glove compartment under the steering wheel that offers space for wallet, glasses, loose change, etc. VW seems to cater more toward women and I like that. Both have a quiet and smooth ride.

My opinion about the car is.
I think is a great option for a family car, I will 100% recommended. Is fast and the money I use in gas I think is not really much. The seats are very comfortable they really well. I love my car and my family and friends love it too. It look nice and beautiful and is a great car.

My dream car. An excellent luxury car worth your money.
I love my car! It is my dream car. I like the interior and exterior design. It is a luxury car and the performance is excellent. I have never encountered a problem so far. I always get to overhaul and update my car. It is worth the money. Highly recommended.

Overall good but with a few quirks.
Mostly very good, but it does have a few minor issues including that the brakes have consistently squeaked, especially after it sits for a bit and in the am. The radio also has a number of quirks including freezing, having odd messages like saying 'no FM signal' etc.

Best sport utility in its class.
I love this car! I have owned 3 Acuras’ and this by far is my favorite. The car performs and handles great and gets surprisingly great gas mileage for a car with such horsepower. The inside cabin is super comfortable and the gauges and instrumentation is well thought out.
