2018 Ford Fiesta Review: Reasonably Reliable Small Car With Some High Ownership Costs

Alex Showalter
Jul 20, 2023

The 2018 Ford Fiesta lasts around 200,000 miles with some engine sensor and fuel filling issues reported. At $12,700 to $21,500, it’s a decent value for a small car to get you from A to B, although it doesn’t have a lot of advanced features.

Steering is very sporty for a car in its price range, the ST model is reasonably quick, and the Sync 3 stereo system has great features.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The cargo area isn’t as big as some competitors, there’s limited legroom in the rear seats and the suspension is firm.

Is the 2018 Ford Fiesta a Good Used Car?

  • Overall Rating 8/10 – 2018 is a good year for the Ford Fiesta since it offers plenty of practicality with low running costs. Owner reviews praise the efficient engines, responsive steering, and the strong engine in the ST model.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 6/10 – Interior materials are very cheap for a compact car, the seats are not as supportive as some competitors, and cargo space is limited.
  • Reliability 8/10 – There are no widespread complaints on the 2018 Fiesta. Avoid models from 20112015 which have mechanical issues, while 20162019 are much more reliable.
  • Performance 8/10 – Performance is okay from the base engine which focuses solely on efficiency, while the more powerful ST model is reasonably fast for a car its size.
  • Safety 7/10 – The 2018 Fiesta is reasonably safe, earning 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests. It comes standard with a rearview camera, while optional upgrades include rear parking sensors.
  • Gas Mileage 9/10 – Fuel economy is great at up to 30 MPG, giving 372 miles of range from the 12.4 gallon tank. Gas costs are $26 cheaper than average at $163 per month.
  • Value 8/10 – The 2018 Ford Fiesta is cheaper than many other subcompact cars while also offering slow depreciation, making it a decent value as it ages.

Gas mileage is great. It handles really well. Very comfortable.
I like the style, handling and gas mileage. I also like the handsfree calling. I dislike the leg room space in the back. I have no complaints.

Most probably it`s a best car that I have ever drive.
Still I have not face any problem.I'm happy with my car. I think it's a reliable car for personal & family purposes. When I`m in drive it feel very good. Comfort is well enough compare with others brand. Instant speed of this car is excellent. It also a fuel consume car. So I`m happy with my car.

Small but mighty, ford fiesta.
I honestly love my car. It gets amazing gas mileage, and the hatchback made the two moves I have done with it a lot easier than the car I had before. It is super roomy in the back, so my older brothers (over 6’) still fit in the back. It does extremely well in the snow and wind. 10/10 would recommend.

Fuel-efficient and comfortable.
My ford fiesta is fuel efficient, reliable, and comfortable. The car drives smooth and air conditioning works great. Although the vehicle is small, there is actually quite a bit of trunk space available. The only con for me is that it has manual windows.

It has never given me any mechanical problems, and it has good gas mileage.
The Ford fiesta is very good on gas. It is a dependable car, that can comfortably fit my family. It is also very affordable!

It is 1 year since the car was purchased. It has been great on gas mileage & handles well. It is good on acceleration when expressway driving. It has heated seats which is a plus for Chicago weather. I recommend it for anyone looking for an affordable compact car.

It is small, fast, and amazing on gas.
I love this tiny car it turns on a dime so you can fit in small places. The sound system is pretty great. It is absolutely amazing on gas almost a full tank with 10 bucks. The ride is smooth and there’s tons of room. I don't really have any problems with it is.

This car is too small and too low to the ground.
The car is too low to the ground. Any vehicle that is behind you at night will blind you with their headlights. Also, there are many plastic pieces in the car that breaks easily. The car is so small that any normal sized person will have some pain while driving the car.

Stay away from automatic trans
The fiesta has not been all it was cracked up to be for me and ppl I know with similar setups. I test drove 2 fiestas before I purchased the automatic trans version. The dual clutch system on this car is faulty from day one. It slips the clutches from day one and only gets worse as the mileage goes up. Now my car shudders, vibrates, shakes the wheel and is considered a pile of parts I cant get rid of with barely 100,000 mules on it. An automatic should be able to last the lifespan of the car. 100k on a car should be nothing now a days but to the fiesta (and the focus which has the same trans and a large scale recall) it is basically the end if the line for the car unless you are willing to shell out some cash to fix it and watch the same thing happen again to your poor little car. I say stay away from the fiesta and buy a different brand!

Compact car, but a good daily.
Car is okay definitely not worth the value. This car is a good first time buyer car but will devalue within a matter of weeks. This car has not given me any problems and as far as comfort nobody really fits in the backseat except for small children. If you are looking for something not too pricey as a daily then I would recommend.

The fiesta of your small dreams.
The fiesta is a reliable car I just hate how small it is and how bad they eat tires. The standard version is extremely basic to the point it doesn't even have an armrest. It has crank windows and cheap steelie rims. It's a nice small family car. It's just not for me.
accountCircle Aly L
The ford fiesta is cute, but it is tiny.
My ford fiesta is super cute and fits into small parking spaces. It gets very good gas mileage for a non-hybrid car, and I haven't had any mechanical issues with it since I bought it. However, it is tiny. There is no leg room in the back seat, even if you squish the front seats up all the way forward. The back seats do not fold down enough to fit anything larger than groceries in the hatch. My boyfriend has a Honda fit that is the same size as my fiesta, but it has so much more room. The tiny interior makes it very difficult to clean, especially under the seats. The material the seats are made out of makes it impossible to get dog hair out of them.
accountCircle Larry L
Wouldn't give to a graduate; nor someone of age. A mid aged expensive toy.
Alignment issues, tends to be an irritant, acceleration glitches. This leads to tune ups at odd times. Front wheel drive and braking makes the car wobble like it going to flip on itself, when on the highway. Middle back seat belts hinder a proper use of letting the seats down in the back.

What Do Critics Say About the Ford Fiesta?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2018 Ford Fiesta feels like a substantial car with a quiet cabin, while also earning high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Fiesta at 4.2/5, enjoying the sporty handling on curvy roads, but doesn’t like the limited cargo space in the rear.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the 2018 Fiesta a 3.9/5, praising the excellent fuel efficiency, but owners don’t like the lack of driver assistance features.

What Common Problems Does the 2018 Ford Fiesta Have?

Common problems found on the 2018 Ford Fiesta include a lack of power while accelerating, fuel smells in the cabin, along with the stereo system freezing. Overall, these problems are average compared to other small cars, leading to reasonable repair rates as the Fiesta ages.

A lack of power, while accelerating, is the most widespread complaint from 2018 Fiesta owners, showing up at around 25,000 miles. Usually, the problem is caused by a bad mass airflow sensor which leads to the engine bogging down. Replacing the sensor costs around $200, depending on local labor rates.

Fuel smell in the cabin is another problem mentioned by owners at around 10,000 miles. The Fiesta features a capless fuel filler setup, and in some cases the valve fails and has to be replaced. Changing out the valve is usually done under warranty, although out of warranty it’s around $350.

The stereo system freezing also happens to some Fiesta models at around 5,000 miles. There are stereo system updates available which improve reliability. Most dealerships will install these updates for free as part of normal servicing, while others charge around $50 for the labor.

There are no recalls on the 2018 Ford Fiesta, which is better than some other compact cars, and simply means none of the issues with the car have been widespread enough to need a recall, or they have not affected the safety of the vehicle.

How Long Will the 2018 Ford Fiesta Last?

A well-maintained 2018 Ford Fiesta can last around 200,000 miles, which is shorter than some other compact cars like the Toyota Corolla. Regular annual maintenance costs are slightly higher than some other small cars, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $552 per year.

As a used 2018 Fiesta reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the seat heater switch for $125, a variable valve timing control solenoid costing $120, along with the brake booster which costs $520.

Yes, it is been reliable and has no problems but when driving at night I get blinded by the lights in my rear view so I adjust my mirror and it is no problem but since the car sits so low I get blinded from the brightness of cars in my rear view by the side mirrors.

accountCircle sarah p

I believe it is reliable. I have not had a single problem since I have started driving the vehicle itself.

accountCircle Malik B

No I haven't experienced many problems with this car however I haven't had it for that long and I will see what happens in the future.

accountCircle Caitlin S

I just got it but so far yes, I have not noticed any problems at all. There may be a recall for the fiesta but it hasn't affected mine yet.

accountCircle Lucia T

Currently after one year the Ford Fiesta is reliable. To date there has not been any problems. Gas mileage is good.

accountCircle Betsy B

The ford fiesta is a reliable vehicle. The only problem is it is a little hard to get in and out of. I am used to getting in and out of a minivan, so getting down to get in a car instead of up is a change.

accountCircle Tricia D

Yes, reliable. No, I am not having any problems with this car. The only thing I don't like it I have to open the trunk from the inside of the car.

accountCircle Jacoby C

Yes, I feel it is reliable, it has never given me any issues. There are times when I have accidentally turned my car off and not put it in park, the car is great at notifying you of that and working properly. The only issue is the engine is smaller so it will not speed off right away.

How Is the Technology?

Standard entertainment technology is okay, offering a relatively small 4.2-inch center display screen for the camera and stereo system. Optional upgrades include a larger 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

The safety technology is fairly basic, only featuring a standard rearview camera.

Optional upgrades include MyKey, which allows you to set audio and speed limits, along with rear parking sensors.

Is the 2018 Ford Fiesta a Good Value?

Yes, the 2018 Ford Fiesta is a decent value since it offers practicality while also being affordable to run. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $12,700 to $21,500, making it less than a Mazda3 or Honda Civic. When new, the price range was $14,205 to $21,285. Depreciation is better than some other small cars, only losing about 5% of its current value per year.

The 0-60 mph time for this engine setup, regardless of transmission choice, is around 9.1 seconds.
  • The Fiesta ST, the performance variant, is equipped with a turbocharged 1.6L four-cylinder engine. This engine produces an impressive 197 horsepower and comes paired with a six-speed manual transmission. What Colors Does the Ford Fiesta Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Ford Fiesta?

The 2018 Ford Fiesta provides a satisfying level of comfort, especially considering it falls within the compact car segment. With seating for five passengers, the Fiesta offers well-cushioned seats with good support, making it suitable for city driving and moderate distance trips. The front seats are particularly comfortable and provide plenty of space for taller passengers, while the back seats, although somewhat more compact, offer acceptable space for the class.

The car features quality materials throughout the interior, which contribute to an overall pleasant ride. Depending on the trim level, you can have features like heated leather seats, adding a touch of luxury and extra comfort for colder climates.

Ride comfort in the 2018 Ford Fiesta is fairly good, thanks to its agile handling and controlled ride. The car manages to absorb most road imperfections, and despite its sporty nature, doesn’t feel overly harsh or firm on bumpy roads. Road and wind noise are also kept to acceptable levels, enhancing comfort for longer drives.

How Much Storage Space Does the Ford Fiesta Have?

The 2018 Ford Fiesta is a compact car that comes in both sedan and hatchback models. While both are known for their fuel efficiency and sporty performance, they offer different amounts of storage space.

In the sedan model, the 2018 Ford Fiesta offers a trunk space of 12.8 cubic feet. This space is relatively sizable for a compact sedan. It’s enough room to fit an average size suitcase or a small load of groceries, making it quite suitable for daily commutes or short road trips.

On the other hand, the 2018 Ford Fiesta hatchback provides a bit more versatility regarding cargo space. Behind the rear seats, it has 14.9 cubic feet of storage space. This is enough room for a couple of carry-on bags or a decent amount of shopping bags. If you need more space, you can fold the rear seats down to open up a total of 25.4 cubic feet of cargo area. This allows enough room for larger items such as a bicycle, a large suitcase, or a week’s worth of groceries for a family.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The first generation of the Ford Fiesta was introduced for the 2011 model year.

2015: Minor shuffling of packages, and the Performance Blue color introduced.

2016: New SYNC 3 stereo system offered, SE model has Black package, S model comes standard with remote keyless entry.

2017: Some options packages removed, other than that, no major changes.

2018: Rearview camera standard on all models, larger screen, and 1.0L engine discontinued.

2019: Both the hatchback S and Titanium models removed from the lineup, new ST Line introduced. Final model year for the Fiesta before it was retired.

How Does the Ford Fiesta Compare to the Competition?

The 2018 Ford Fiesta is a decent compact car if you’re looking for a budget-friendly choice with some decent practicality in the hatchback model, although it’s not as long-lasting as some competitors.

The Ford Focus is another small car offered by Ford which is about $2,000 more. Passenger room is better in the Ford Focus, while steering is more responsive in the Ford Fiesta. We recommend the Ford Focus since it’s more practical and also offers stronger engine choices.

The Honda Fit is a competitor which is available for about $3,000 more. Standard technology is better in the Honda Fit, while the Ford Fiesta is slightly smaller, which makes it easier to fit into small parking spaces. We recommend the Honda Fit since it’s one of the most reliable small hatchbacks on the market.

The 2018 Ford Fiesta is a good vehicle, the interior is nice, simple, but detailed enough that you can understand the facets that it has, but also have a few updated technology gadgets as well. The floor LED lights are a bonus. The only issue is that the car does take a little power to start going, however once the car gets going in speed, it goes fast. Safe and small car, great for a first car.

My 2018 ford fiesta does not have cruise control or power windows. Other than those two problems it is perfect. Spacious enough for me to fit a car seat and two passengers and really good on gas mileage. The maintenance on my car in relatively inexpensive compared to previous cars. It's a reliable small car. The gas on it is good and drives very smooth. However if you have a lot of things to pack, this car isn't the car for that. Maybe groceries if you do not buy a ton. Its stays clean throughout the year and no rust as of yet. And I had the car for two years now.

Great affordable car
Bought an electric blue model used this week, with 20k miles on it. The door lock button is in a weird place, I would prefer it on the door. I wish they took maybe 6-8 inches from the generous sized trunk and gave it to legroom in the back seat, but for me and my six year old that is a non issue on a daily basis, just can't drive with other adults in the back. It gets great gas mileage and it drives really well. I've driven it 200 miles in two days and the gas gauge isn't at 1/2 yet. My model doesn't have power seats which is a bummer, but not the end of the world.

Good on gas mileage but
My only problem with the 2018 Ford Fiesta is that if I don’t drive it every few days the car will be stone cold dead when I do try to start it. I have brought it to 3 different Ford dealers. It is still under warranty. Each time they say there is nothing wrong and ‘reset’ the electric system. The car is so new it’s still under warranty. Guess I’ll be bringing it to the Ford dealer every time until the warranty ends!

Silver ford fiesta: the inside highlights lights being the pun.
I bought my vehicle used. It is a very good and reliable car. It has a few problems, but not any that cannot be fixed. I need new windshield wipers and the brakes need to be fixed. The seats are comfortable and easy to move to where I need them. My car has colored lights in the cup holders and below the dashboard as well as in the back. I really like the lights. The backseat can be put down where you can reach the trunk through it. The trunk is pretty big compared to the car, which is smaller than usual cars. It seems more compact than other vehicles but if you are short like me, it is still nice and comfortable. It seats three in the back and two in the front. Four door car.

I honestly love my ford fiesta. The color is a dark grey, which is perfect for me! It drives very smoothly and it is super easy to maneuver. It does not take wide turns which is perfect for parking. It is small enough to fit into tight spots and it still seems to be big enough to where it can fit 5 people comfortably. It gets really good gas mileage and has a decent sound system as well. My 2018 ford fiesta St is a 1.6 turbocharged four cylinder.
I only have two major problems with my 2018 fiesta St, and that is the size of the pedals and how close they are to each other and how small the gas tank is. Other than that the fuel mileage is outstanding. I average about 27.5 mpg and I am pretty heavy on the gas at times. The St is kind of a multi role vehicle quite sensible for everyday driver, but if you wanted to take it to the track for some fun why not. All around an amazing little car.

Good car other than transmission issues and tech sync.
The car is a pretty standard economy car. It has great gas mileage and can maneuver nicely. The greatest issue has to be the transmission. The transmission in the vehicle has issues changing gears and there is sometimes a kick to it when braking in traffic or other stops. The car is comfortable and the technology is amazing outside of the voice sync to the phone which does not seem to be compatible with iPhone.

Ford fiesta 2018. The only real feature is the Bluetooth.
The car is very loud, which can be a tad irritating. There have had some problems with the water pipe breaking. The Bluetooth is a long process to connect each time. The car blows very easy when it is windy. I have never had any problems with the seat or the material that it is made out of. While the seat color does show stains easily, they are also very easy to clean. The car is small and very easy to park. The trunk is big and can fit a lot of things. The backseat is a little small, but no one has ever mentioned it, so it is not an issue. I like that the car is so small and compact, it is perfect for interstate and highway driving.

The fiesta is bigger than it looks.
Trimmed down and affordables. This vehicle handles well and gets exceptional gas mileage. Roomy backseat for being such a small car. The fiesta also has a oversized trunk which is great for storage. And the addition of a backup canasta makes me feel very safe. Also the safety ratings on the fiesta are exceptional.

The few things I like about my 2018 Ford Fiesta is its gas mileage, low maintenance and sporty handling.
One of the most important things others should know about my 2018 Ford Fiesta is the very small wheels/rims and very low ground clearance.

It is like a small ladybug.
The car rarely has problems it is very reliable and is a good working car to be a almost 3 year car. The car is very spacious and good for people that have a family because even though it's small it is big enough for a family. I love the car and it is very affordable and very comfortable for me.

2018 ford fiesta 4 door sedan review.
Very fuel efficient. Excellent handling for an economy car. Responsive acceleration in the lower gears. I have a 5 speed manual transmission. Reasonable acceleration at highway speeds. Narrow frame is ideal for squeezing into tight parking spaces. But it also makes for a bit of a tight fit in the driver's seat. Pedals close together. Cannot drive effectively with bulky footwear such as steel toed boots because a wide boot could hit multiple pedals simultaneously. Overall a good buy for the clearance price tag in 2018.

Ford fiesta 2018 se review.
Transmission issues. Hard transmission movement. Gas is incredible. Fill up maybe twice a month. For the cost of the vehicle, the value is great. Vehicle has 38000 miles and still running well. Car seems small on the outside but large on inside.

Great car for commuting!!
My fiesta gets great gas mileage! It has plenty of room for a small car. The trunk is really spacious. No problem to fit four adults comfortably in the cockpit. The sunroof is a fun bonus! Backup camera, but the screen is small. Four cup holders in the front, but only one in the back? I do not like that. I also wish the center of the rear seats folded down for an armrest.

The sparkle, sleek, and modern design sets it apart from other fiestas.
It is a really good car. I use it to drive to college, and soon university. The seats are comfy and very open inside. Last week we visited Louisiana from Texas. The journey was perfect. Great car to drive long hours. One of the best cars I have had. I would recommend this highly.

The actual purchase price out the door (tax, license, fees) was less thank for a car with automatic transmission, air conditioning, back up camera, am-fm stereo and cd player,, keyless entry, and some other nice features
A perfect car for me. Good fuel mileage and easy to drive.

Compact and comfortable with smooth ride.
My vehicle is reliable and comfortable. It gets great mpg and offers a smooth ride. The hatchback really comes in handy when moving things. It offers much more space than it appears to. The sound system is good and has a crystal clear sound. Overall I am very happy with the performance of my vehicle.

Ford fiesta - party on the go with this lively vehicle!
My 2018 ford fiesta runs very well. Having had no issues and gaining excellent gas mileage, this vehicle has served me well. Despite the model's small size, the interior is surprisingly roomy. Seating up to four passengers with hands-free and steering wheel controls for the driver, it makes for an excellent choice if you are looking for luxury and performance in one package.

This vehicle is small but comfortable.
My vehicle is small but very comfortable. Sometime engine got quickly lagged but except that, I didn't have any problem. Tires are getting easily annoyed. Have huge space of trunk. The option of color is variable, so you can pick the most unique to yourself. I really liked my car, and I wish pairing bluetooth should be more easy.

Sync issues related the fuse box circuitry.
There are issues using the sync system with the ford fiesta because of a known issue with the fuse box circuitry. Usually resets when you remove and replug. Other than that issue the car is pretty smooth and easy to drive and has sufficient torque for most city and highway driving.

2018 ford fiesta good economy option.
It has great turn radius, is a good size albeit somewhat small however that is good for the city, it is a good economy option. I would buy it again most likely if the price is right. It is not flashy. Good reliable inexpensive car. It gets good gas mileage.

Great running car and pretty yellow green color.
No problems! Performs great, runs well and good gas mileage! Better mileage on trips than in town driving! Really economical and comfortable riding! Pretty color comfortable seats! Airbags! Very reliable transportation! Radio air conditioning stick shift! A great smaller size car. Not much more to say except I love it!

My car is my hero it literally has been through a lot this year runs great.
My car is small but it gets me where I need to go. I have only had car problems due to my driving skills but overall the car is great on performance and gas is great. I do not need much money to fill my tank. My car is perfect for someone who is single with no kids. Hard to keep clean because it is so small but it is durable!

Ford fiesta pros and cons.
The only issue I have with my vehicle is that windows are crank windows now power windows and there is no console in between the passenger and driver seat. Other than that I enjoy the car. It is comfortable kind of small so that wouldn’t for families or anything but if it just you it is a nice car. I can connect to Bluetooth to play my music and there is nice trunk space.
accountCircle Dawn O on January 5, 2021
Good on fuel ease to drive.
We got one with crank windows and that's a bit annoying also there is very little power. There needs to be a 6th gear for the highway. It seems to struggle to pick up speed to merge. It is easy to drive. I like that it is good on fuel. It's been reliable so far. Not much space but we don't use it as a family car.
accountCircle ciara L on January 4, 2021
Cute car excellent gas mileage.
The gas mileage and handling are excellent. I run it really hard and have not had any problems. However I am 6 feet tall and my fiesta is barely big enough for comfortable legroom. The seats are comfortable and it's a great road trip/ small delivery car with a surprisingly spacious trunk.
accountCircle Kelly S on December 29, 2020
The ford fiesta; seats 5 comfortably as long as no one has any belongings.
I love my car and I trust my car and ford UAB super helpful, any fixes I've had to go in for have been easy. I do wish there was more room and console storage. I knew it was a small car when I bought it but somewhere to put my purse when I have a passenger would be nice.
accountCircle Vinny M on December 28, 2020
It is a compact sweet ride and better on gas.
No problems. Slick, modern design with interior customizable lighting. Car drives very smoothly and picks up speed easily, without burning much gas. Do not even know you are going 80 mph!! Very efficient car.
accountCircle Tracy L on December 27, 2020
My driving experience with ford.
Yes, the 2018 ford fiesta is a good subcompact car. Its appeal lies largely in its status as a fun-to-drive car, particularly with the sporty St trim. From a practical standpoint though, most rivals surpass it with larger trunks or more passenger space.
accountCircle Anna B on December 25, 2020
The ford fiesta is a great first car or commuter car.
The car is small and fuel efficient, yet it has a much smoother ride than many cars of its size and economy. The seats in the front are comfortable, but the backseat is a little small and may be uncomfortable for tall people. It is a great commuter car or first car for a young driver. The car has cruise control and power windows and locks. The car is also great for small or petite people, as it is easy to see over the dashboard and the seat adjustment options accommodate smaller drivers. The trunk and hatch are small, this car may not be ideal for people who need to haul a lot of gear or other items. I would recommend this car for a young driver who needs a reliable, fuel efficient car for work or school.
accountCircle Michelle L on December 21, 2020
Ford fiesta the cheap reliable car.
The performance of the vehicle is great because I do not have any issues with it driving on the road. The tires make my ride smooth and steady. The seat is comfortable front and back. The trunk has a lot of space which can be ideal for some. My favorite feature is Bluetooth because I can listen to the music straight from my phone. Another feature is having the phone install which helps me talk to people while keeping both hands on the steering wheel and sound of the car phone is loud enough for me to hear. The car also has an 911 alert on which helps when I am in an emergency situation and or when my airbag has blown up. The car is not for very big people they could easily take up the space of someone sitting behind them since they would have to push the seat back far. If you are big person typically just driving alone or with one person in the front then no problem. It is an ideal car for small people and or first time drivers because of the many safety features such as emergency brake and it is a small car. Another issue is the stigma around Ford being a bad company because with this car it is a great Ford car that does not match the stigma. This car is very reliability and has not given me issues when driving it whether it be highway, road, neighborhood, etc. Since it is quality made without much flaws or issues.
