2020 Jeep Wrangler Review: Fun Off-Road Oriented Midsize SUV But Ownership Costs Are High

Alex Showalter
Mar 16, 2023

The 2020 Jeep Wrangler lasts around 250,000 miles with some steering and rear axle issues reported. At $29,875 to $43,400, it’s expensive, but worth the money for one of the best off-road focused SUVs on the market.

Off-road performance is fantastic, the advanced stereo system works great and the engine choices are all strong.
dislikeFilled The Bad
There’s a lot of wind noise, cargo space is worse than other SUVs and the suspension is bouncy on roads.

Is the 2020 Jeep Wrangler a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 8/10 – 2020 is a good year for the Jeep Wrangler, although it’s solely focused on off-road performance. Owner reviews praise the strong engines, fun driving experience, along with the stereo system.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 7/10 – Interior materials are okay for an SUV offering improvements from earlier years, the seats are supportive, cargo space is low though.
  • Reliability 8/10 – There are no widespread complaints on the 2020 Jeep Wrangler. Models from 2013 through 2021 are all dependable choices.
  • Performance 7/10 – Performance is okay from all of the engine choices which focus more on driving off-road rather than on-road racing.

  • Gas Mileage 6/10 – Fuel economy is okay at up to 25 MPG, giving 437 miles of range out of the 17.5 gallon tank. Gas costs are $17 more than average at $225 per month.

Love the personalization!
Have no had any issues as of yet. Doors, top, and front top pieces are easy to remove. Easy to use google or apple play. Need to use premium gas and has 21 gallon gas tank. Rides very smooth but take turns slower to not flip. Easy to personalize with foot pegs, grills, and jeep logo stickers. Be ready to spend money to make it your own unique jeep.

Wrangler is the way to go.
Best jeep I have had. I had a Cherokee before the wrangler and had nothing but problems. With the wrangler I love the feel and haven't had any problems. Went on a couple trails already and still working good. Even without a lift kit. I would recommend to a wrangler to anyone.

2020 jeep wrangler unlimited.
No problems yet. Very comfortable and is very fun to drive. Great gas mileage so far as well. It is very nice to be able to remove the hardtop and make it a convertible in about ten minutes total. There is also a very friendly group of owners that always wave to each other.

Having a hard top that we can take off.
This car is the best. I was so surprised that a jeep can be so comfortable! The sahara has so many options.. Back up camera, ac, heated chairs, 8.4 inch screen. Also I drives great. Because the jeep is big you can see so far in front of you, I love that. You can see people breaking in a far distance.

Jeeps are reliable and fun.
This vehicle is the most fun, reliable, and safe vehicle I have ever drove. Taking the top and doors off the jeep is tons of fun. I ended up in a car accident and the back tire definitely took most of the hit and didn't damage my car as much as we thought it would’ve. It is a good investment!

Best in class car that stands out on the road.
The best car that is definitely stands out on the road. I live it is design, bikini pearl color is a magic and it is wild character is so me. It eats too much of course but I am not driving long distances to worry about that. It you have a technology group setup, you can connect your phone and maps, and no need to have those dated native navigation systems.

It is a big, fun vehicle that is also very reliable but can also have fun in.
It has been very reliable! I have a little sister that loves it also and fits her car seat. I have a dog that sheds so the leather seats come in handy. I have added new tires and tinted my windows. I drive to Texas in it and it was comfy. The touch screen is convenient. The ac vents are very small and there are none in the back which sucks.

Electronical issues. Poor dealer service
I have a Jeep Rubicon JL for over a year. 4WD/stability control/check engine light signs come and go often. Dealer doesnt want to address these issues saying that the car had been driven on off-road trails and in the snow/water/mud.....that'sthe whole purpose of this vehicle is to do off-road trips! Car had been advertised as such and it's their whole selling point-->capable offroader. Yet when u use it as intended, dealer doesnt want to address the issues. If u buy Jeep, be prepared to do lots of repairs on YOUR OWN!!!

Rough ride, interior makes up for it.
The ride is bumpy, the high wheels make it very jumpy and uncomfortable at times. Though off roading is perfect with this car. Trunk space is perfect, very spacious and very worth its price. The interior is perfect, I am in love with the look of the car and the interior design. Though, it is not as sustainable as promised as I am often getting my oil changed and gas needs to be filled more often than usual. I usually do not complain because of the feel of the car but not only does it have different seats. The seating is one of my favorite parts of the car. The sound system is also very pleasing. I love being able to hop in the car and have it heat up quickly. In the summer, it is very nice to be able to hop in with the doors off and the roof off and have a fun car to drive around in.

Sloppy jeep too smart for its own good.
The electronic system is weird. Can't open door and start motor. Vehicle should start and stop on demand, especially off road. Also the automatic engine stop when the vehicle come to a stop is moronic. The steering play looks like I am playing ping pong when driving. Other than that, awesome. The 4 cylinder has plenty of power with the turbo, but do not really like the turbo off road.

What Do Critics Say About the Jeep Wrangler?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2020 Jeep Wrangler offers improved powertrain choices along with new technology, while also getting high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Wrangler at 3.6/5, praising the very responsive engines, but don’t like the slow steering.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Wrangler a 4.3/5, enjoying the off-road capabilities, but owners don’t like the noisy cabin.

What Common Problems Does the 2020 Jeep Wrangler Have?

Common problems found on the 2020 Jeep Wrangler include loose steering, a damaged rear differential, along with check engine lights. Overall, these problems are worse than other midsize SUVs on the market, making them more expensive to fix, although they are similar to some other off-road focused SUVs.

Loose steering is the most widespread complaint on the 2020 Wrangler, showing up in the first 1,500 miles. There are some reports from owners of having the steering gear replaced for free under warranty, which fixed the problem. When loose steering shows up later in the ownership experience, it’s usually a suspension and alignment issue.

A damaged rear differential has also been reported by 2020 Wrangler owners in the first 10,000 miles. If you take your Wrangler off-roading a lot and wind up slipping or spinning tires, it can cause premature wear to the differential. Replacing the gearset in the differential costs around $1,100, depending on local labor rates.

Check engine lights are another common issue with the 2020 Wrangler. There are hundreds of reasons a check engine light may turn on, but the most likely sources are damaged sensors or a loose gas cap. If you get a check engine light, you will need to use an OBD-II scan tool to read the code, then fix the issues from there.

There are eight recalls on the 2020 Wrangler, which is worse than other SUVs from the same year. The most serious recall is for a fuel pump failure which can cause the engine to stall while driving. Other important recalls cover a fuel supply line connection, the clutch pressure plate, along with the lower control arm separating from the axle. Jeep will replace the parts on affected models for free.

How Long Will the 2020 Jeep Wrangler Last?

A well-maintained 2020 Jeep Wrangler can last around 250,000 miles, which is around 100,000 miles less than the long-lasting Toyota 4Runner. Regular annual maintenance costs are more expensive than other SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $645 per year.

As a used 2020 Wrangler reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the blower motor for $385, fuel evaporative canister costing $275, along with the starter motor which costs around $400.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is very basic in the 2020 Jeep Wrangler with a standard 5-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth connectivity. Optional upgrades include larger 7-inch or 8.4-inch touch screens with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Standard safety technology is worse than other SUVs, only offering a standard rearview camera.

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Rear parking sensors
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Forward collision warning
  • Blind spot monitoring

Is the 2020 Jeep Wrangler a Good Value?

Yes, the 2020 Jeep Wrangler is a good value since it depreciates slowly while also being reasonably reliable. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $29,875 to $43,400, making it more expensive than a Jeep Grand Cherokee. When new, the price range was $28,295 to $42,195. Depreciation for the Wrangler is non-existent in current market conditions, but in normal times expect it to drop about 4% each year.

What are the Different Models of the Jeep Wrangler?

There are three main models of the 2020 Jeep Wrangler offered, from the base Sport to the more off-road focused Rubicon. The Wrangler is also offered in either a standard two-door model or the larger four-door Wrangler Unlimited model. All Wrangler models come standard with four-wheel drive.

What Engines Come In the Jeep Wrangler?

  • The base engine in the 2020 Wrangler is an average 3.6L V6 which makes 285 horsepower at up to 20 MPG. There’s a standard six-speed manual transmission or optional eight-speed automatic transmission. Performance is decent, taking 6.6 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH.
  • An available upgrade is the more efficient turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder, which produces 270 horsepower while getting 23 MPG. This engine only has an eight-speed automatic transmission.
  • There’s also a turbo diesel available with a 3.0L V6 which generates 260 horsepower and gets up to 25 MPG. It only has an eight-speed automatic transmission.

What Colors Does the Jeep Wrangler Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Jeep Wrangler?

The 2020 Jeep Wrangler offers a comfortable ride for its class, but it may not be as plush as some other SUVs on the market. The seats are supportive and offer plenty of cushioning, and they can be adjusted to fit a variety of body types. However, some taller passengers may find the legroom to be a bit tight in the back seat.

The ride is generally smooth on paved roads, but the suspension is designed for off-roading, which can lead to a bumpy ride on uneven surfaces. The noise level inside the cabin is also higher than in some other vehicles, due to the Wrangler’s open-air design and rugged construction. Overall, the 2020 Jeep Wrangler strikes a good balance between comfort and capability, making it a great choice for drivers who prioritize off-road adventures and don’t mind sacrificing some luxury features for a rugged, versatile vehicle.

How Much Storage Space Does the Jeep Wrangler Have?

The 2020 Jeep Wrangler is a versatile and rugged vehicle that offers plenty of storage space for your gear and equipment. One of the primary storage areas in the Wrangler is the cargo space behind the rear seat, which provides 31.7 cubic feet of storage. This area is perfect for hauling large items like camping gear, sports equipment, or luggage.

Additionally, the Wrangler features several smaller storage compartments throughout the vehicle, including a center console with a lockable storage bin and cup holders, as well as a glove box, mesh storage pockets, and more.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The fourth generation of the Jeep Wrangler, known as the JL, was launched for the 2018 model year.

2015: Upgraded tool kit with tools needed to remove doors, more powerful stereo system.

2016: New exterior color choices offered, special edition models added.

2017: Optional remote start, heated seats, and LED headlights available.

2018: Fully redesigned for the fourth generation with new technology, styling, and engines.

2019: New forward collision warning and adaptive cruise control added.

2020: Optional V6 diesel engine available, Moab model removed from the lineup.

2021: New 4xe Hybrid and Rubicon 392 high-performance models introduced.

How Does the Jeep Wrangler Compare to the Competition?

The 2020 Jeep Wrangler is an excellent choice if you’re in the market for an off-road focused SUV, but you sacrifice a lot of safety and reliability for the capabilities and styling.

The Jeep Gladiator is another vehicle offered by Jeep which costs around $3,000 more. Both the Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Gladiator are built on the same platform, but the Jeep Gladiator offers a truck bed. Ultimately, the choice between the two Jeeps comes down to personal preferences and needs, making both worth a test drive if you’re in the market for a capable off-road vehicle.

The Toyota 4Runner is another midsize SUV which costs around $4,500 more. Passenger room is better in the Toyota 4Runner, while the Jeep Wrangler does handle extreme off-road conditions better. We recommend the Toyota 4Runner for a daily driver since it’s more reliable, while the Jeep Wrangler is a better choice if you only plan on going off-road.

I had a 2013 jeep & just bought my new one. They have really improved the performance. I call my jeep Mr. Zippy. It handles hills with ease. Ride is smoother. A few factors to notice when driving or buying a jeep wrangler sport.
I honestly don't have much issues with the car. Its 40 dollars a week for gas, great for all seasons, spacious and updated. The only problem if any is taking the hard top off, it's not much of a problem, however it takes a lot of time and requires you to know the weather for the following days due time needed to put back on.

What a slick ride! Drives smooth and has basic but modern amenities. Decal on the car leaves a unique impression. Leather trim on the seats gives the jeep a clean and modern look. No problems at all, having a hard top really keeps it quiet in the jeep. The feel is very smooth for a wrangler and the performance is great, especially the mpg which is around 24-25 mpg. Great second vehicle--but not really a family car.
So far, a very reliable vehicle, however, it is somewhat noisy and uncomfortable for very long drives and is not a good high speed freeway vehicle. Ideal as a second car, or 'dad's toy'--but mundane chores like groceries and hauling the kids are not its strong suit. Do not get me wrong--I love the vehicle, and fulfilled a lifelong dream in getting her! I am somewhat disappointed in the performance of the vehicle--after years of owning a Cherokee with the old 4.0 liter in-line, this Chrysler v6, borrowed from a minivan, lacks torque and power response.

My version of the wrangler is designed for off roading. The vehicle is not useful for long comfort drives. I would not want to exceed a drive longer than 2 hours. This is the 4th wrangler that I have owned. I love the fact that the 2020 jl’s have CarPlay for iPhone connectivity, but I would love for dealerships to stock more 2 door manual transmission wranglers that are not base models. Every dealership I went to only had about 2 of these vehicles and they were base model and not what I was looking for.

Loving my jeep! Highly recommended vehicle! Perfect for everyone.
I just got my jeep couple months ago after dreaming about it for years! I couldn’t be happier with it! I love that it is a every place vehicle you can take it to the mountains, the beach and the city! It is very roomie and amazing for road trips! Loving it!

It is a great, car the ride is amazing the features are also really nice.
I don't really have problems with my car. It runs great and also it is a bumpy ride it is a smooth ride at the same time. It is really comfortable and it has Bluetooth and it reclines back at the top. Instead of the windows being on the side of the door it is close to the radio.

Love the pick up in speed!
Great on gas, not too rough a ride. Tire pressure needs to a bit under in order for easier highway driving. All apps are run through a smartphone. No built in GPS. Sound system very good. Dislike the seat back adjustment handles, wish they were a solid design as opposed to material loops.

Trim is amazing - off roading features will spoil you.
Uconnect has some issues with charging and connecting via Bluetooth. I wish their mobile app had more features to set sensibility to alarm or notifications. I have had for about a year and breaks are beginning to make a bit of sound. Overall fantastic car both on and off roading.

I love the tan drop top that opens up my view of the world around me.
I love my jeeps capability. Though it is 4x4 it is the nicest driving SUV I have ever owned. Drives smooth and handles responsively. Feels high quality. Biggest problems are the rain guards that drip straight into the cabin when you open the door and the soft top windows are hard to clean. But I wouldn't trade it in for anything.

The all in one vehicle- jeep wrangler.
My jeep wrangler sport is amazing! I leased the vehicle in February. I love driving it with and without the doors and roof on. It is a smooth ride. I enjoy taking it off roading in to the sand dunes and muddy forests. It has been a reliable vehicle. I have had no issues with the vehicle so far. It is a comfortable ride. All the features are great. The sound system is good, but could use some more speakers. It is an easy car to keep clean. All my friends and family love it.

The top comes off in 3 parts and small enough to store in the back.
I have only had this car for a few months, but I love it so far! This is my second jeep and they are always sturdy and stand up for the long run. Their safety is their top selling factor and their customer service could not be beat. I had my last jeep for 7 years and never had any issues, it was just time for a change. They ride smooth and never lose their reliability.

Traction bar sensor keeps activating.
It took the dealer six weeks to try and figure out why the traction bar sensor kept activating. They couldn't figure it out and ended up replacing the entire rear end assembly, which was fine as it was still under warranty. Otherwise, the vehicle has been awesome.

Easy to remove panels overhead and have half of a convertible (freedom panels).
It is relatively new and we have been quarantining, but I haven't had one issue yet. Very reliable, performs perfectly and it is pretty comfortable. I previously had a BMW x5 so it is not as nice of a ride, but the cool look and the amount of aftermarket details you can add make the cat super neat and fun. I would have gotten the automatic tip if I knew I wasn't going to take the hard top off much, but the freedom panels are cool. I especially like the uniqueness of the special editions (willys). I feel comfortable driving it in any weather. It would be nice if the doors unlocked with your key on your person instead of having to find the key and press the button. It is a great and cool car.

2020 jeep wrangler willy's edition.
2020 jeep wrangler. Willy's edition. Firecracker red with black trim. Push to start. Perfectly clear back up camera. All terrain tires that look aggressive like mud tires. Sleek dark wheels. Beautiful and bright led lights. XM radio. 4 wheel drive. Power windows. Remote start. Plenty of storage space. Big cargo space on the back.

2020 jeep wrangler most comfortable durable vehicle on the market.
It rides so nice and smooth over bumps! I have got a 5 year old and a soon to be newborn. It has so much space in it! I love the fact that it is so rugged! My son is constantly spilling drinks and it is so easy to clean. I would never buy another vehicle unless it is a jeep. It is not the fastest but I am not looking to go fast. It is extremely comfortable ride! Also it is extremely sporty!

Everyday use urban jeep Sahara.
So good so far. No major issues with the vehicle. The main issue that I have is with the touch screen display. I think they make it overly complicated to adjust the heat / defrost the windows. Also a minor frustration is that you can't adjust media / other features if you have on gloves while driving. I do wish that it had lane sensors like other cars. I also wish it had memory from driver 1 to driver two settings that other cars feature (like seat setting / mirrors etc).
