2020 Kia Sportage Review: Reliable Small SUV With a Very Long Warranty

Alex Showalter
Feb 11, 2023

The 2020 Kia Sportage lasts around 200,000 miles with some minor oil drain plug and battery drain issues reported. At $19,000 to $33,758, it’s a great value for a small SUV with an upscale interior and a lot of the latest safety technology.

VehicleHistory Image
likeFilled The Good
Passenger room is great in both rows, the cabin is very quiet at highway speeds and the interior materials are nice for its price.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Rear visibility is poor with the thick pillars, the cargo capacity is less than other small SUVs and the suspension is firm.

Is the 2020 Kia Sportage a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 8/10 – 2020 is a good year for the Kia Sportage since it offers improved reliability from earlier years with a lot of technology. Owner reviews praise the passenger room, low ownership costs, along with the luxury interior features.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – Interior materials are surprisingly nice for the price, the seats are great on long drives, although cargo space is a little lower than average.
  • Reliability 8/10 – There are no serious problems reported on the 2020 Sportage. Avoid models from 20172018 since they have engine failures while 20192022 are more reliable.
  • Performance 7/10 – Performance is only average from both of the four-cylinder engine choices, making it not the most exciting SUV to drive.
  • Safety 9/10 – The 2020 Sportage is very safe, earning a perfect 5-star overall rating in government crash tests. There’s a standard rearview camera, lane keep assist, along with automatic emergency braking. Optional upgrades include adaptive cruise control.
  • Gas Mileage 8/10 – Fuel economy is good at up to 26 MPG, giving 426 miles of range from the 16.4 gallon tank. Gas costs are $20 cheaper than average, at $170 per month.
  • Value 8/10 – The 2020 Kia Sportage is cheaper than many other small SUVs on the market, while also having low ownership costs, making it a good value.

Excellent truck space, rooming back seats and plenty of leg room. God on gas.
I have not had any problems with my 2020 Kia shortage. The performance is what I was looking for. The built in GPS, Doppler radar is very nice in bad weather when you're out of town and haven't got a chance to hear the weather. The back seats recline for the back seat passenger to get in a better nap. I love the cool and heated seats! The heated steering wheel on the cold days when you are waiting for the car to warm up is very nice. The upscale interior is very nice and looks more expensive like it does in a Lexus or Toyota 4runner.

Great for the open road when you needs lots of room and even a place to sleep!
Very comfortable! Lots of room! Safe and efficient to my needs. Worth every penny. Great deal! The sun roof goes all the way to the very back of the car! Not claustrophobic. The back door will open up for you so that you can put all your groceries in there without having to open it with all the groceries in your hand. Also it closes on automatic so you can just get in your car and it makes it very easy to go about date today.

So many features in a compact functional space.
The Kia Sorento is a great vehicle. I originally leased the Sorento for 3 years and loved it. I decided to downgrade to something smaller and love the Sportage. It rides so smooth and has so many features while still being quite small with a larger appearance. The sunroof option is really a plus along with the heated seats and cordless phone charger. What’s not to like!

Reliability, comfort and secure.
The car is reliability. Gas friendly a lot space for the family is also an excellent design, very popular with young adult's, the AWD feels like a 4x4 I haven't got stuck in snow. My car have 180 horsepower, my wife enjoys the big sunroof, very quiet inside.

Sporty with great space for five people with plenty of things to offer.
Overall it is a great SUV with plenty of space, performance is amazing Kia is a great vehicle. It is my first time owning a Kia, only downfall I do not have heated seats. But everything else is great size is perfect for my family size, I would definitely recommend a Kia.

The best car I have ever driven.
I have no problems, I really love this car. It is very comfortable for long road trips, very comfortable and smooth to drive, has a good amount of space in the trunk, and can fit up to 5 people. Has a cool touch screen and you can connect your phone to it and listen to your own music and also has a built in GPS.

Just an all around good car. You will not be disappointed.
I absolutely love this car. It will let you know that the car in front you stopped short before you even noticed it. It is very comfortable to sit it. Drove it to North Carolina with no issues. It has eco drive feature plus a sport feature. Lane assist as well. The hatch has lots of room for storage. I get almost 400 gallons to a tank of gas.

Great car for anyone! Lots a room for passengers.
I have had my Sportage for a few months and I love it! Been on camping trips, road trip, and carpooled my son and his friends! Rides smooth, and it has great cargo room! Love the hitch and roof rack! Great car for anyone wanting to go on adventures! Has a great sound system for road trips!

Worts purchase I’ve ever made
I bought my brand new Sportage in February 2020 in June the windshield began to crack and in July of 2020 I paid $1600 to have it replaced. The NEW windshield was put installed August of 2020, not even 6 months ago, and yesterday on a brief trip to the grocery store ( only a 5 min drive from home) when I finished and got in my car to return home...there was a crack in the windshield. Kia denies any responsibility and continually claims it’s “stone chips”. I am 60 and have owned at least 8 vehicles in 35 years and NEVER replaced a single windshield in any of them let alone 2 new windshields in less than a year of ownership. My advice is spend a little more money and buy Toyota or Mazda. I will never purchase a Kia again. There is a class action lawsuit on the horizon for the Kia Telluride windshield and the issue with those windshields are exactly the same as what I am experiencing with the Sportage. If I could give Kia a score of Lee’s than zero I would

Many annoyances
The rear speakers are more than likely blown. The sound goes in and out on all speakers, very annoying. This could be an antenna problem. Connecting to the radio with a Android phone, pure garbage for phone calls. The hatch is not aligned, it rattles and costly needs adjusted. Kia gives you power folding mirrors, but no heated seats with the leather. This gets annoying in winter and the seats scratch easy come on kia. The bolsters are high so you have to drag your whole body across to get out, I'm 6' and have the seat all the way down, no power seats with leather? 7k miles and the vehicle needs an alignment/suspension adjusted. And no I didn't hit anything, the 18" tires were rotated. The blind spot detection comes on when there is no vehicles around. I totally understand that I live in a winter/ snow state although the brakes have rusted so bad they need replaced. I love the looks of this vehicle and before the suspension issue I loved the ride. I must trade it in asap. I pay way too much to deal with c**p for another 2 and a half years. Also I get that some of the issues are petty and I didn't think the leather seating would become such a issue. I'm an idiot on this one.

Family car with speed and space.
It's very small, kind of like a car, great gas mileage, has the pick up speed as expected. Good for a shorter person. Good for road trips. Great price and value, insurance is not bad. Beautiful interior and back seat space. Has enough space in back seat for child car seats.

What’s w the tranny!!!!!
I got this is 2019 don’t get me wrong I lovvvvveee this thing! HOWEVER, I brought it back a few times for tranny issues and “the famous no issue found” laggy and shudders when trying to pick up speed in small hills or merging onto highway. Today I was going about 40 and braked to slow down, instead it revved high and pedal vibrated, then finally shifted down(or what it seemed) ugh I’m sad bc I know I’m not imagining this, but the dealership doesn’t seem to care!

Newer, apparently improved... But not better..
Alot smaller than the previous Sportage, not able to see as well, more blind spots and do not like the feature of lane departure. I have needed to go around other vehicles and have a difficult time doing so.. Fighting the vehicle to do so. Poor gas mileage and also miss having CD player in vehicle.
accountCircle Diane M
Both good and bad. You decide.
So far it has been reliable. The paint has not held up very well. It does have good pick-up. The gas mileage is not as good as I expected. I get about 20 miles per gallon. It is very comfortable to ride in. I am totally dissatisfied with the price I gave for the vehicle. It is worth way less now.

My new Kia Sportage that is very sharp looking.
Have no problems with this SUV but wish I had gotten one with more options. This is the vehicle that I am going to retire with so I try to keep it very clean. I always likes Kias and Owen a Kia soul before this one only a deer ran into it which is the reason for the shortage.

What Do Critics Say About the Kia Sportage?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2020 Kia Sportage is a very competitive small SUV when looking at other choices on the market, with good owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the 2020 Sportage at 4.6/5, praising the high-quality interior materials but doesn’t like the disappointing acceleration.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Sportage a 4.6/5, enjoying the high-tech features available, but owners don’t like the limited rear legroom.

What Common Problems Does the 2020 Kia Sportage Have?

Common problems found on the 2020 Kia Sportage include oil drain plug issues, excessive battery drain, along with some reported coolant leaks. Overall, these problems are not very widespread, leading to average repair costs as the Sportage ages. It also has a 10-year/100,000 mile warranty which covers many of the issues.

Oil drain plug issues have been reported by some 2020 Sportage owners in the first 20,000 miles. The main problem is the drain plug does not seal properly after an oil change, leading to leaks. Replacing the drain plug costs under $10. If there are crossed/damaged threads then having them recut may cost another $50.

Excessive battery drain also shows up on some Sportage models at around 2,000 miles. Modern vehicles have a lot more electrical accessories than older cars, which sometimes drain the battery while they are off. Diagnosing the source of the excessive battery drain costs around $60, while fixing it is usually covered under warranty.

Coolant leaks from the radiator have also been found on a few Sportage models in the first 5,000 miles. Usually, the problem is caused simply by a loose hose clamp from the radiator which allows coolant to leak out. Repairing that issue costs under $20. There are chances the radiator could be damaged, which can cost around $800 to replace.

There are two recalls on the 2020 Kia Sportage, which is similar to lots of SUVs from the same year. The first recall covers the hydraulic electric control unit (HECU) which may short out and cause a fire in the engine compartment. The second recall covers the trailer hitch harness, which also may short out, causing a fire. Kia will replace the parts in affected models for free.

How Long Will the 2020 Kia Sportage Last?

A well-maintained 2020 Kia Sportage can last around 200,000 miles, which is around 100,000 miles less than the long-lasting Toyota RAV4. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other compact SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $350 per year.

As a used 2020 Kia Sportage reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the alternator for $650, A/C refrigerant line costing $700, along with the battery cable which costs $450.

Since my vehicle is pretty new, I would have to say that I haven't had any problems yet. Hopefully there will not be any in the near future.

accountCircle Katie B

It is extremely reliable. I have had no problems for the amount of time I have had it. There's tons of space, drives very well. I am very impressed with this vehicle. Always starts and gets me where I need to be on time.

accountCircle Taylor M

No problems at all it is very reliable. I also love how it has all of the sensors on it to let me know if somebody's behind the car or in my blind spot.

accountCircle susan s

It appears to be reliable, no mechanical problems noted. I have nothing further to comment on this particular question.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is great with a standard 8-inch touchscreen stereo system which has Appel CarPlay and Android Auto. Optional upgrades include a more powerful Harman Kardon sound system.

Safety features are excellent for a compact SUV with standard driver assistance features including:

  • Forward collision warning
  • Pedestrian detection
  • Lane keep assist
  • Driver attention monitor
  • Forward automatic emergency braking
  • Lane departure warning
  • Rearview camera
  • Automatic high-beam headlights

Optional advanced driver assistance features include:

  • Stop-and-go adaptive cruise control
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Rear cross traffic alert

Is the 2020 Kia Sportage a Good Value?

Yes, the 2020 Kia Sportage is a good value since it’s reasonably reliable while also being cheaper than many other compact SUVs. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $19,000 to $33,758, making it less expensive than a Honda CR-V or Subaru Crosstrek. When new, the price range was $23,990 to $35,090. Depreciation is similar to other small SUVs losing around 10% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Kia Sportage?

What Colors Does the Kia Sportage Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Kia Sportage?

The 2020 Kia Sportage offers a spacious and airy cabin, with plenty of room for up to five passengers. The front seats are well-cushioned and offer good support, even on long drives. The rear seats also have a decent amount of legroom for a small SUV.

The cabin of the Sportage is finished with high-quality materials, including soft-touch plastics, high-quality leather, and metallic accents. This gives the interior a premium feel and adds to the overall comfort of the vehicle.

How Much Storage Space Does the Kia Sportage Have?

The 2020 Kia Sportage has a spacious cargo area that can accommodate a variety of items. With the rear seats in place, there is 30.7 cubic feet of cargo space available. What Are the Differences Between Years?

The fourth generation of the Kia Sportage was introduced for the 2017 model year.

2015: No major changes.

2016: New touchscreen display on the LX model, standard leather on EX & SX models.

2017: Fully redesigned for the fourth generation with new exterior, interior, technology, and engines.

2018: New stain-resistant cloth upholstery added, new EX Sport Appearance package added.

2019: No major changes from earlier years.

2020: Minor exterior styling changes, new safety technology, standard 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

2021: Sunroof and Premium package no longer offered, Nightfall Edition package added.

How Does the Kia Sportage Compare to the Competition?

The 2020 Kia Sportage is a decent compact SUV since it combines a lot of technology with an industry-leading 10-year/100,000-mile  powertrain warranty, making it a good choice for shoppers.

The Nissan Rogue is another small SUV which is available for around $1,500 less. Passenger room is slightly better in the Nissan Rogue, while the Kia Sportage has a more upscale interior for the money. We recommend the Kia Sportage, although both are decent values, for the 2020 model year, and it’s worth testing both to see which you prefer.

The Hyundai Tucson is a competitor, which is roughly $1,000 more. Both the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson are built on the same platform, while the interior materials are more luxurious in the Hyundai Tucson. We recommend the Kia Sportage since you are getting essentially the same car for a better value.

The car pulls you into your lane if it feels you drifting.
There’s was a kick/pulling after you've had it for about 3-4 months. But the manager said with this vehicle you have to break it in. Must be true now I have no issues with the car. The back seat could be a little more spacious. If you have two car seats on either side you can barely sit comfortably in the middle. I do not like the middle person seatbelt being on the roof of the car.

Its a attractive vehicle, but can use some improvements mechanical wise.
It is reliable so far. It don't do well with backing up in the garage, and the windows lock don't work. It's not that great on gas either. Don't come with a lock gas cap either. You hear everything even with the windows up. I use a pillow for comfort, an I don't like that I can feel on the floor when I turn the wheel.

The gas mileage is good but not great for a vehicle it is size but the power of more than adequate and cargo space is suffix.

Kia Sportage is the car to get!
The Kia Sportage is a great small SUV. It is big without being too big. I really love the blue color I got! It is great in the snow and has really great features with a great sound system. I would highly recommend this car for anyone. It is smooth, comfortable and reliable.

Kia Sportage first time buyer.
I have had this vehicle for 3 months and I love it. Very comfy and easy to drive. This is my first SUV I have purchased and I am very happy. First Kia ever and very impressed. Heated seats, blind spot detection, lane assist very cool safety features. The touch screen display is very clear and easy to use.

Fell in love with this car!
I love the car it is my favorite vehicle, I went from a 2009 Cadillac cts to my Kia and it is just as smooth as the Cadillac. I love the lane assist feature and the blind spot indicators. I feel much safer in this car then my last. The apple car play is amazing as well! The only thing I would change about my 2020 Kia Sportage is I would love a sunroof. Some come with it but mine didn't. Other than that it is perfect! A great midsize SUV!

The Kia Sportage is a good family vehicle, very safe.
I do not have any problems with my car. It is comfortable, reliable and gets me where I need to go. Gas mileage could be better, but being that it is all wheel drive, I understand. Another thing I like is the touch screen system for the radio and navigation.

Great purchase. Would encourage anyone to try Kia.
No issues as I just purchased. It is spacious and quick to respond when the gas is pressed. Great safety features and very fun to drive. I would encourage anyone to look at Kia when seeking a new vehicle in the future. It was a good decision on my part.

A wonderful compact SUV!
My Kia Sportage lx is extremely roomy on the interior while offering a compact size on the outside. I feel comfortable driving it and parking it. I love the features such as the back up camera and the lane monitoring. The interior is roomy, the seats are comfortable, and it comfortably seats 5 people. While I miss having a CD player, I adore the apple play, the ability to connect my phone to the media system, and the story itself is great. The air conditioning unit is perfect and very cool. I find myself only needing to keep it on 2/5 during a hot Las Vegas summer, which is refreshing and helps save gas. I enjoy the eco mode on the car, which helps preserve gas, and while I wish that it got better gas mileage, I do feel it gets better gas mileage than most other SUVs on the market. I would highly recommend this vehicle to anyone and everyone in the market for a nice compact SUV at an affordable price.

The best looking SUV out there.
I just love my 2020 Kia Sportage. When we went to the dealership we didn't go there to look at the Sportage but when I saw it sitting there I couldn't believe what a good looking SUV it was. Needless to say we went home with one! We were so impressed with the looks and style it had. Then we took it for a drive and knew this was the vehicle we were going to purchase.

Kia Sportage review-best car around.
I currently drive the 2020 Kia Sportage. This is the second Kia Sportage I have had. I have to say that I have had zero issues with this vehicle. It runs well on gas and have had no issues with the ever changing New England weather. If you are looking for a small, sporty SUV, then the Sportage should be at the top of your list!

The vehicle is a great 'mom' car!
I recently bought a 2020 Kia Sportage lx and it was the best decision I have made! It can fit 5 people comfortably with a little extra leg room in the back seat. There is plenty of trunk space for groceries and other things as well. The back seats also fold down to make the back even bigger, to be able to carry more. It has great gas mileage and is super affordable to fill up with gas! It drives smoothly! The radio works great! That a/c and heating is amazing! Great touchscreen features! It's an amazing car overall!

No repairs. The break system hiccups when you break suddenly...
The car is good. Drives well and smoothly. However it consumes a lot of gas and hiccups when there is a sudden break. I don't like the way it behaves with the brake system. Also, it only alerts you when there is a moving vehicle or person behind the car, not when you are backing to a stationary object or person.

I love, love, love the moon roof.
I absolutely love my 2020 Kia Sportage s. I have had no mechanical issues and I drive anywhere from 100-150 miles daily. It is a nice smaller SUV but has good space and it has made with great quality. I do not have any complaints thus far and I have had it for a year.

Smooth drive and reliable quality.
There are no problems. It runs smoothly and it is spacious. The only thing I would change is a bigger gas tank because it is smaller than my last car. The payment is affordable and insurance people work well with the payments for it. I highly recommend this car.

Kia Sportage black on black excellence.
This car is great, it runs smoothly, gets excellent gas mileage and has plenty of room to haul friends and products around. The trim of this vehicle is gorgeous, the black wheels give it a super sleek look. The sport driving mode is great for zipping around town to run countless errands.

My favorite vehicle to drive!
The whole radio needed to be replaced within the first 4 months of having the car. Otherwise, I love this car! It meets all my needs it is roomy and stylish. I love the all wheel drive and that is one of the reasons I bought it and I needed something bigger for my daughter.

SUV, not the best, but not the worst.
No problems, it runs great. I just do not like having an SUV. I liked having a car better, I like sitting lower to the ground. But this car can move if it wants to. Sport mode is amazing. Not the best on gas though. Could be better there. Not too much to complain about though.

Great family car for our family of three.
The 2020 Kia Sportage is a perfect vehicle for our family. The size is perfect for our family of three plus a dog. The blind spot feature is a plus as well as the keep lane assist. The back up camera is a bonus feature even though it was not functioning and needed a whole new camera. The back seat is kind of small to where we have to put our car seat in the middle, but it is still roomy.

Comfortable ride with little compromises even at the lowest trim.
No issues at all. Never had a problem other than being to out more air in the tires. Smooth ride and turn radius is really good for a crossover. Love the eco and sport modes. The gas mileage is wonderful for a crossover. I wish the seats were a little less stiff, but this is the lowest trim so it is expected.

Awesome features including auto highbeams.
I love my Kia Sportage! It is very comfortable to ride in and is much easier to drive and park than my previous minivan. Love all the features, like the rear camera and auto high beams. The different driving modes are cool too. Lots of storage in the back. It is just a very attractive looking vehicle!!

You cannot go wrong if you buy a Kia Sportage 2020!
I love the sunroof! It is the perfect size for a single person or family. You can change the drive mode. The 2020 Sportage have a silver chrome finish which makes the car look fancy! The race car pedals are really cool. What sold me on the car was leather seats and sunroof.

A basic model sedan with touch screen and plant room.
For a basic model, this is a very tech savvy car. Runs smoothly and has lots of room. I have not had any issues with it. The trunk has lots of room and I also like the bottom compartment. It is great for storing little things such as a first aid kit. No bad reviews.

Kia Sportage made me a loyal Kia buyer and owner!
I went for the sport edition I loved the tires/rims! Later I wished I had also gone for more interior luxury as well. Heated seats, moonroof, etc. I noticed right away how well it handles, and how smooth it rides, even though. It can also take a little roughhousing too! It has all the modern features (that I have never had before) like a back up camera, a touchscreen, to make access to directions, radio, and phone calls, at the tap of a button. Love! If I had to point out something I did not like it is two very small things… one: maybe it is just me, but I feel like the lights cut off at a certain height (horizon) and I would like to be able to tilt them up just a little for my personal height. Two: once again this is a height issue… the headrest should be also able to tilt back not just forward. A bonus for this issue. The chair pumps up to help adjust to you perfectly! Overall I am beyond pleased with my Kia! 10 out of 10 would buy again!

Great car but could use bigger gas tank and better gas mileage.
The Kia Sportage handles very well. I did turn off the lane assist as it pulled too much when it felt I was going out of the lane. I like the tire pressure mode as it tells me the psi for each tire. I wish it had a larger gas tank and that it did better in gas mileage.

2020 Kia Sportage s trim review.
The 2020 Kia Sportage is a great crossover SUV. It drives like a sedan and is super comfortable. It even has folding rear seats for extra storage. My s trim has heated seats, blind spot warning and crash detection. I was previously driving an Infiniti q50 and I have to say that I like the Kia better based on my needs.

Great vehicle. Safe and fun to drive.
It could have more pick up and go. I wish it had better acceleration. I do not like how you can not get satellite radio in the car you have to hook it up to your phone and then use your phone data. But besides that the vehicle is very nice and fun to drive.
