The 2017 Subaru Legacy lasts around 250,000 miles with some minor wiring and transmission software issues reported. At $16,000 to $25,990, it’s a great value for a midsize sedan with a nice interior for the money.

likeFilled The Good
There’s plenty of passenger room, a lot of advanced safety technology available and standard all-wheel drive.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The base engine is not very strong, the steering feels loose and the suspension is firm on rough roads.

Great overall experience, would recommend.
Very comfortable, smooth drive, heated seats, bluetooth options. Large trunk space. Only had minor problem with radio but was replaced at dealership. My phone was outdated and did not connect well to the radio. One recall to update software. Other than that no problems.

AWD rocks. You should drive this in the winter. This car gets us anywhere in bad weather.
I love the AWD. It is a totally reliable car and great in snow. Good dealership too.

Very comfortable and handles great in the snow. Also a very sturdy car.
It's very comfortable and very sturdy. I'm pretty sure it would hold up better than others in an accident!

Needs more advancements like side mirror sensors and beeping on the backup camera
I don't think i have had it all seasons enough to really rte it but it runs great and smooth takes corners great, gas is awesome! Does great in rain unlike my caliber. Waiting to see how it gets me through winter

This car handles well and gets good gas mileage. You will love driving this car
Handles well. Big trunk. Front end is low so that is a drawback. Spacious back seat. Rear view mirror is nice

Subaru legacy flexibility.
I enjoy the smooth and safe ride. The safety features are so worth it. Subaru just makes amazing cars that last awhile and give you the comfort and peace of mind with safety. The storage in the car is fantastic for being a sedan. We can fit a lot of items in our trunk.

Top rated for safety features, such as eyesight, lane change detection and backup camera
I am in love with my Subaru Legacy. It has top rated safety features such as eye sight, which helps detect cars around me and slow me down or prevent me from switching a lane if a car is detected.

Parts breaking already
Purchased new. Bumper popped loose within 1 month of purchase. Trunk hinge has broken. Has severe lag in changing gears, seems to be common with this model.

All performance no frills.
Handles great in all weather conditions. Never breaks. I drive it hard. Slow 0-60. Great pickup 60 to 85. Reliable. All wheel drive. Gets through any snow conditions. Display is boring and plain. Audio isn't great. If you're looking for a cool car that has fancy trim and gadgets this isn't for you. If you want a car that will perform well, never break and drive of 300k miles. This is it.
accountCircle Lawrence J
Very average car. Mechanically sound, but the technology is poor.
The stereo is horrible. The Pandora app does not work half the time. Also, the tires that came on the car were cheap and not effective for rain or snow. It has been mechanically reliable so far. The suspension system is quite poor, I feel every little bump in the road.

Subaru Legacy feels very safe and it holds the road.
The vehicle is not comfortable to drive. The vehicle feels very safe. The radio reception is terrible.

Subaru legacy: great car, bad seats!
The Subaru legacy is a great car. Very durable, good on gas, and many other awesome features. The seats are the most uncomfortable seats I have ever sat in. Like someone with a weird shaped back was the seat model. I have constant shoulder pain from how the seats are shaped and no product, setting, or anything can fix the terrible shape of the seat.
accountCircle Dorothy H
A clunker of a car for the winter months.
Compared to my previous Impreza, the legacy is heavier, so it is better in poor road conditions during winter months; however, it is not a very smooth ride. It surges as if changing gears. Also, the braking distance is often erratic, leading to some scary moments at red lights.
accountCircle Andrew D
It is a great quality car with good safety.
I like that it is safe. I like that it is reliable. I do not like that it I spot fast. Finally, I do like that it gets good mileage.
accountCircle Gabrielle M
The thing others should know about my car is it/s small & has power.
My vehicle is very spacious and looks very luxurious. I do not like the Audio system in the vehicle, the pandora app has a lot of issues. My back up camera is also not the best, I have problems with it turning off.

What Do Critics Say About the Subaru Legacy?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2017 Subaru Legacy is a great all-around sedan offering excellent ride quality, with high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Legacy at 4.5/5, enjoying the high-tech safety features, but doesn’t like the slower acceleration.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Legacy a 4.5/5, praising standard all-wheel drive system, but owners don’t like the lack of a hybrid engine.

What Common Problems Does the 2017 Subaru Legacy Have?

Common problems found on the 2017 Subaru Legacy include the windshield breaking easily, rodents chewing on the soy-based wiring, along with the transmission hesitating as it changes gears. Overall, these problems are similar to other midsize sedans, leading to average repair bills as it ages.

The windshield breaking easily is the most widespread complaint on the 2017 Subaru Legacy. There was a production run of glass which was more fragile, and would crack entirely when hit with a rock instead of chipping. Replacing the windshield is the only way to fix the issue, costing around $700.

Rodents chewing on the soy-based wiring is another problem mentioned by 2017 Legacy owners in the first 5,000 miles. There are strobe lights which you can install under your hood which deter rodents. If any critters chew your wiring, repairing it can cost $100 to $3,000, depending on the severity.

The transmission hesitating as it changes gears has also been reported on some Legacy models at around 1,000 miles. There are transmission software updates which address slow gear changes. Most dealerships will install these updates for free, while some charge around $100 for labor.

There are two recalls on the 2017 Subaru Legacy, which is similar to many other midsize sedans from the same year. The most serious recall covers the steering column which can lead to a loss of steering. Subaru will replace the steering column on affected models for free.

How Long Will the 2017 Subaru Legacy Last?

A well-maintained 2017 Subaru Legacy can last around 250,000 miles, which is only slightly shorter than the long-lasting Toyota Camry. Regular annual maintenance costs are higher than some other midsize sedans, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $556 per year.

As a used 2017 Subaru Legacy reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the fuel injectors for $450, a brake booster costing $500, along with the rear suspension which costs $850.

accountCircle alson d

Yes it is reliable. I have never had to take the car in for any type of service other than a regular oil change. I have never had any issues with major parts of the car.

accountCircle Michelle S

The 2017 Subaru Legacy is reliable. I did encounter a problem with a faulty battery, but it was easily replaced and covered under the initial warranty. Otherwise, I have had no problems with this vehicle.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is excellent in the 2017 Subaru Legacy, offering a standard 6.2-inch touchscreen with Subaru Starlink software. There’s an optional larger 7-inch touchscreen available.

Standard safety technology is basic and only has a rearview camera.

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Subaru EyeSight
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Blind Spot Detection
  • Lane Change Assist
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Reverse Automatic Braking

Is the 2017 Subaru Legacy a Good Value?

Yes, the 2017 Subaru Legacy is a good value since it offers decent reliability ratings as it ages with a nice interior. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $16,000 to $25,990, making it similar in price to a Honda Accord or Mazda6. When new, the price range was $21,995 to $31,640. Depreciation is similar to other midsize sedans, losing about 8% of its current value per year.

How Does the Subaru Legacy Compare to the Competition?

The 2017 Subaru Legacy is a very nice midsize sedan offering a lot of safety technology for its age along with a tried and true all-wheel drive system which is great in snowy conditions.

The Honda Accord is another midsize sedan which costs about $3,000 more. Entertainment technology is better in the Honda Accord, while the Subaru Legacy has a more luxurious interior for the price. We recommend the Honda Accord, although both are very good midsize sedans.

The Subaru Outback is a popular SUV offered by Subaru which costs $5,500 more. Cargo space is better in the Subaru Outback, while the Subaru Legacy offers some higher-quality cabin materials. We recommend the Subaru Outback since the practicality is worth the extra money.

Reliable and dependable car, good price, no big issues.
I like the car but I wish the electronic screen was better, it does not work well. The battery died recently. The window sticks sometimes. I wish I had bought a different car that had better electronics like apple play. Overall it is a decent car I do not mind it.

Big space for legroom. Smooth driving.
Our car is very comfortable and has a very nice interior too. It's very good for road trips especially me and my husband has relatives in the California so basically we use it. I am so happy about it is so smooth to drive on the road, very big legroom so my passengers are very comfortable especially on long roads trips.

I really like all the safety features in my vehicle. The backup camera, lane assist feature, blind spot detection and automatic braking make me feel safe and secure while driving. No problems as of yet. Very reliable. Comfortable. Love the interior. It is great in the snow and it has heated seats. It also has great mpg. This was also the only sedan that had all wheel drive. Easy Bluetooth hookup. The interior is a mix of leather and cloth.

Extremely reliable, great on gas/mileage, 4wd great in wintertime, comfortable, legroom for tall people, accelerates fast, holds to the road, wide turning radius. Has a sunroof, heated seats, backup camera, large trunk, fold down back seats, lots of storage spaces, cup holders.

Great reliable family for cars.
Drives great in the winter, reliable car. Relatively decent on gas on the highway, but I live in a city so the mileage is not the best. It is pretty large but the spacing is not the most efficient. Would be a great car for a family, but since it is just me in the car it is a little too spacious.

The vehicle had charging issues but it is running great now. Shakes a little when idling but I have had it looked at and no issues have arose. Another great thing is the gas mileage. The car is also comfortable to drive on long trips. The cargo space is plentiful for a family of 4.

Subaru legacy is the best car in the world.
It is good, it runs good, the speed is awesome I wouldn’t want to trade this vehicle for anything in the world. It runs really well and it has a lot of space, also the seats go down so you can store things and there’s a lot of space. It is also a push to start so you just step on the brake and push the button to start it right up and it also has and regent brake so it really works fine.
accountCircle anna H on March 18, 2021
Top-line safety features.
I love the backup assist cameras and the blind spot protection. I also have starlink in case of emergencies. My car is very comfortable to drive/ride in and gets good gas mileage. I have bluetooth connectivity with my phone that works well. The customer service with Subaru is also excellent. I have no complaints and love my car!
accountCircle Charmaine D on March 18, 2021
90% awesome, 10% needs updating.
Overall, it is a great car! It is got everything you need, and some things you do not, but will learn you cannot live without. It is super easy to connect your phone via Bluetooth, the backup camera/screen is big enough that your grandmother will be able to see it clearly, and the manumatic feature is awesome. The only complaints I have are that, some genius decided to put shiny surfaces inside the car. You've got to keep something over the gear shift so you do not go blind. That, and the sun often hits the screen/backup camera wrong, so you've got to shield it with your hand. Oh! And the automatic dimming rear view mirror is far from perfect.
accountCircle Krystal E on March 17, 2021
Love it or leave it legacy.
The gas mileage is phenomenal. I love the different interior light color features also. The AWD feature is top notch for a sports car. I am able to drive past other 4 wheel drive vehicles in inclement weather with ease. The vehicle has more than enough cargo storage in the trunk region for trips. The seats are comfortable and the seat warmers are so relaxing. I supposedly have a function where I can set my screen saver with personal photos but I have been unsuccessful at this time still 2 years post purchase. I do wish the rear of the car had it is own air conditioning vents. It seems like my arm always freezes so the kids can be cool. The only other complaint I have is if the key is in the vehicle only the driver side door can be opened from the outside. It must be a safety feature but it makes it difficult if you are in a rush and forgot something. I have gone through a set of tires already and the car only has 40, 000 miles on it. My driver's side window also malfunctioned while under warranty. They didn't repair it stated it was just a button that sticks, unfortunately now it does make a noise when used.
accountCircle Jo P on March 15, 2021
The interior car handle has beautiful blue light!
It is a great car. It is a smooth ride, very chic looking, but my battery has died twice, and in the morning my brakes squeak. Other than that I love the safety features, the backup camera, and the heated seats! The engine is not that loud so that is a plus as well!
accountCircle jp L on March 8, 2021
My car is lovely and I like it.
It seems to run out of a lot of fuel no matter how little you travel. The breaks are sometimes a little stiff too and it causes the car to make some odd noises when driving. But other than that though, it is a fine vehicle and I enjoy driving it very much.

Reliable and long lasting.
It is a comfortable car with a good radio and reliable gas mileage. The feature that keeps you in your lane can be a bit inconsistent where some days it works better than others. The camera on the car that operates the control part does not work all that well in the rain and in the dark. The inside has at least 2 outlets for phone cords which is really convenient. Subaru legacy review from someone who has owned two.
Reliable and fantastic in incline to weather. It handles nicely. This is the second one I have owned. I like the fact that they have high safety ratings. Some downsides are that the interior and standard features are lacking compared to other vehicles in its class. Subaru starlink is archaic and insanely expensive and only offers a small fraction of the features that an OnStar system does.

My subie is the best, wouldn't want another kind of car.
I love my Subaru legacy. I does super well in the snow and I feel super safe when carting around my baby as well. I have had no mechanical problems. I has gotten me through a 10 hour round trip. Has great miles per gallon as well. I love my touch screen it is large and can be well seen.

It is very roomy and a great family car.
I like the room that I have. I can easily pack all the stuff I need to go on vacation. There is really nothing that I dislike.

That it has lots of new technology that makes it safer
I love the adaptive cruise control in the car, I also like the lights in the mirror that tell you if someone is in your blind spot. I only thing i don't like is the trunk is smaller than i am used to

It is comfortable for long drives and has many features.
I dislike the mileage on my vehicle. It has adequate space. I wish it could go longer without an oil change.

Subaru legacy: safe on the road and comfortable to drive!
This is my second Subaru legacy and I have loved both cars tremendously. They have incredible gas mileage and are one of the safest cars on the road. The legacy is a smaller sedan, but inside the feel is very comfortable. It is not claustrophobic. The newer models are simple to use when it comes to the functions on the systems screen.

Subaru drives super smooth.
I got my car in 2019 and it is my everyday car! I have only had one issue with it where my key kept getting stuck in the ignition and couldn't get it out which was killing my battery. I took my car to Subaru and they fixed it, I haven't had a problem since! I love that I can Bluetooth my phone to my car and play music or answer phone calls! I love the touch screen! The legacy drives so smooth sometimes you have to be careful because you will not realize how fast you are going! I travel a lot with my nephew and nieces and it is super spacious with their car seats.

The car that could pretty much drive itself.
It could basically drive itself. Love the cruise control feature because it makes it so I stay 3 car lengths behind whoever is in front of me by slowing down and speeding up with traffic. Try swerving out of your lane and the car will beep at you (which is great to keep me in check). Great gas mileage. Love the backup camera especially when using my car to teach my teenage sister how to parallel park.

We got this car due to the fact that it is all wheel drive. It is a joy to drive.
The battery died a few months after purchase. We found that odd and looked online that a lot of batteries in new cars are refurbished. The guaranteed us that their batteries were all new and that it might be a defect. Regardless though, they did replace it. We haven't had a problem with it since.
