2010 Toyota Tacoma Review: Most Dependable & Powerful Compact Truck Of 2010

Alex Showalter
Sep 7, 2022

The 2010 Toyota Tacoma lasts over 350,000 miles with only some minor oil consumption and stereo issues. At $10,470 to $18,584 it’s a lot for a used truck, but worth the money since they are so reliable.

VehicleHistory Image
likeFilled The Good
Off-road capabilities are excellent, the overall build quality is solid and the interior materials last longer than other trucks.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The suspension is rough on the road, the brakes feel weak for a truck and the V6 engine makes a lot of noise.

Is the 2010 Toyota Tacoma a Good Used Truck?

  • Overall Rating 9/10 – 2010 is a good year for the Tacoma. Owner reviews praise the off-road performance, dependable engine choices, and low ownership costs.
  • Interior Quality 8/10 – All of the materials in the cabin are durable, and the stereo system is easy to use even though it doesn’t have many advanced features.
  • Reliability 10/10 – We recommend Tacomas from 20062015, and buyers should avoid the 2016 model since they have more engine problems.
  • Performance 7/10 – Power is poor from the 4-cylinder engine, but the V6 offers great horsepower for a compact truck.
  • Safety 8/10 – The Tacoma is a safe truck, earning a 5-star overall rating in government crash tests, but only getting 4-stars in the rollover risk assessment.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is average for a compact truck at up to 21 MPG, which should get owners around 41 miles of range out of the 21 gallon gas tank.

Very reliable and trustworthy.
This vehicle has had no issues since we have owned it. We have had it for 7 years. It is a very reliable vehicle. The 4 door option gives it a roomy feeling, but still has the bed that can be used to move and hold anything another truck would.

Great truck for everyday adventures.
The baseline Toyota Tacoma is a great vehicle. Perfect for hauling yard debris and landscaping materials. The cloth interior is easy to clean and durable. The seats are fairly comfortable for short trips, but not long distance. Regular maintenance keep the Toyota Tacoma running smoothly and worry free. It's one of the least expensive vehicles to service that I've owned.

Great versatile vehicle!!
I have 2 kids, the cab has plenty of room for them. It is great in the snow but still not bad on gas. The 4 wheel drive is easy to turn on and off and makes a big difference when driving in bad weather. Overall it has been a great family vehicle. Also the truth bed is great for projects, hauling lumber and what not. It drives nice. I have no complaints about it!

Gas mileage, 4 cylinder good to run around in.
It is good on gas. I do not like to shift gears nd do not like the double doors. It is hard to park because the bed is long, it is hard to see over hood like a bubble.

It's a very good truck that has ran well and not had many issues.
I like the convenience of having a truck and having the option to tow while still being big enough to fit all 3 of my kids safely and comfortably. I do not like the gas mileage, or the year of my vehicle.

It has a great 4WD that pulls great in the snow. With new tires and a full tank of window washer fluid it is amazing in the snow. I love the seats are cloth and do not get so cold in the winter. The heater warms up fast. The wipers have speeds of fast and slow. That is all.
I like that it can pull a trailer. It has 4WD. I like that I can haul mulch and furniture as well.

Is great for me and my family. Has plenty of space for everyone and their things and is very nice to have on road trips.

Amazed by the durability of my Toyota Tacoma. Very reliable and low maintenance.
2010 Toyota Tacoma double cab v6. No vehicle problems. Performance is awesome, very reliable vehicle! Only thing I had to switch off is the make of the off road tires it came with, to noisy for me. Comfort is okay, seats are a little to rough. Vehicle features, satellite radio, aux, Bluetooth, cam.

What Do Critics Say About the Toyota Tacoma?

  • Consumer Reports says the Tacoma offers steering improvements over older models and has very high owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the Tacoma a 4.4/5 praising the powerful V6 engine, but doesn’t like the noisy cabin.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the Tacoma 4.7/5 and enjoy the off-road capabilities, but owners don’t like the unimpressive handling.

What Common Problems Does the 2010 Toyota Tacoma Have?

The most common problems found on the 2010 Toyota Tacoma include excessive oil consumption, stereo system issues, and chipping paint. Overall, these problems are relatively minor compared to other trucks from 2010, and repair costs are more affordable as well.

Excessive oil consumption is the most common complaint from owners at around 150,000 miles. Toyota vehicles in general tend to consume more oil than the competition. Most owners check the oil regularly and top it off as needed. Others replace some gaskets in the engine for around $800.

Stereo system issues show up on some Tacoma models at around 20,000 miles. Owners report the stereo turns itself off and back on randomly. This is usually caused by a software bug in the stereo. Some owners have had it fixed by Toyota with a software update, while others have installed a new stereo for around $500.

Chipping paint is another problem mentioned by owners at around 70,000 miles. Paint that is not properly cared for and left outside will chip more easily since the clear coat gets worn down by sunlight. Repainting the affected areas costs about $1,000 per panel.

There are 13 recalls, worse than other compact trucks from 2010. The most serious recall is for a broken leaf spring which can puncture the gas tank, and Toyota will replace the spring. Many of the other recalls are for air bags and seat wiring, which are less of a concern

How Long Will the 2010 Toyota Tacoma Last?

A well-maintained 2010 Toyota Tacoma lasts over 350,000 miles, which is over 100,000 miles more than other popular small trucks like the Chevrolet Colorado. Regular annual maintenance costs are better than other compact trucks as well, according to Repair Pal, at $447 per year.

Since most 2010 Tacoma models will have over 100,000 miles buyers should be prepared to replace items including the air bag clock spring for $475, the suspension ball joint costing $350, and the throttle body which costs $500.

accountCircle Marie H

Yes, it is very reliable. It does not have any major problems as of now. . We purchased it used and have only had minor issues.

accountCircle Grace T

It is reliable and has no problems other than standard maintenance such as oil changes, tire rotations, etc.

accountCircle Elizabeth B

No, oil changes are once a month. Brakes require replacing every 6 to 8 months. Transmission fluid requires replacement every 12 to 18 months.

accountCircle Braxton D

No problems at all, I have driven it everyday since I bought it about 4 years ago and other than normal maintenance I have had zero issues.

Is the 2010 Toyota Tacoma a Good Value?

Yes, the Tacoma is an excellent value for a dependable truck. Blue book prices range from $10,470 to $18,584 making the Tacoma more expensive than a similarly equipped Ford Ranger or Nissan Frontier. When new, the price range was $15,345 to $27,250. Depreciation is better than average, only losing about 6% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Toyota Tacoma?

There are three models of the Tacoma offered for 2010 including the Base, PreRunner, and sporiter X-Runner.

Base is the entry-level model with:

  • 15-Inch Steel Wheels
  • Cloth Seating
  • Plastic Bed Liner
  • 4-Speaker AM/FM/CD Stereo System

PreRunner is a step up, adding:

  • 16-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Keyless Entry
  • Premium Cloth Seating
  • Rearview Camera
  • Optional 17-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Upgraded Leather Seating
  • Optional Off-Road Suspension

X-Runner is built for on-road performance and adds:

  • 18-Inch Alloy Wheels
  • Lowered Body Kit
  • Sport Suspension
  • Hood Scoop
car
car

What Engines Come In the Toyota Tacoma?

  • The base engine is a fairly weak 2.7L 4-cylinder which makes 159 horsepower and gets up to 21 MPG.
  • An available upgrade is the stronger 4.0L V6 which produces 236 horsepower while getting up to 18 MPG. Performance is good, taking 7.8 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH, and the towing capacity is high at up to 6,500 pounds.

What Colors Does the Toyota Tacoma Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Toyota Tacoma?

The 2010 Toyota Tacoma isn’t very comfortable since it’s a smaller truck, and is similar in size to the Nissan Frontier and Dodge Dakota. The seats are durable and supportive, but the small cabin just limits overall comfort. It’s available as a 2-door Regular Cab, 4-door Access Cab, and larger 4-door Double Cab.

Passenger room is good in the front seats, but the back seats of all models have poor legroom for adults.

What Size Beds Are Available on the Toyota Tacoma?

The 2010 Tacoma comes with a 6-foot bed on the Regular and Access Cab models, and a shorter 5-foot bed on the Double Cab.

VehicleHistory Image

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The second generation of the Tacoma was introduced in 2005, and replaced by the third generation in 2016.

2008: No major changes

2009: Stability & traction control added, stereo system improvements

2010: No major changes

2011: Front grille redesign and new automatic transmission with 4-cylinder engine

2012: New stereo system and styling refresh

How Does the Toyota Tacoma Compare to the Competition?

The Toyota Tacoma is the best compact truck from 2010, offering excellent power, off-road capabilities, and long-lasting engines.

The Toyota 4Runner is another choice from Toyota which is about $7,000 more. Passenger room is better in the backseats of the Toyota 4Runner, but the Toyota Tacoma does better off-road. We recommend the Toyota Tacoma if you need the versatility of a truck bed, or the Toyota 4Runner if you plan on hauling more passengers.

The Ford Ranger is another competitor, which costs about $2,500 less. Interior quality is slightly better in the Ford Ranger on the base models, but the Toyota Tacoma wins out with better off-road performance and power. We recommend the Toyota Tacoma since they last much longer and are more affordable to own.

Owning a Toyota truck for leisure use.
We have no issues with the vehicle so far. We love it and how well it drives. The inside cab area is nice with plenty of room when our kids are with us. The bed gives us ample room to pack for camping, groceries or trips. The gas mileage is ok - as good to be expected.

Extremely reliable. Is also my work truck used daily for commercial shellfishing. A true workhorse plenty of room for my equipment also for all the extras needed such as tags. Zip ties extra clothing need for layering etc. Wish it had intermittent wipers and fewer blind spots.

Most reliable vehicle I've owned.
This is a great vehicle. Its comfortable, decent on gas for a truck. We've had minimal issues for a car going on 10 years. Any issue we've had we were able to have serviced without the truck breaking down. Will absolutely get another Tacoma when it some time to. Btw, we are still riding strong at 260000 miles.

All around performance vehicle.
Extremely reliable, with regularly scheduled maintenance such as oil changes, tire rotations, etc. This truck has been a smooth sailor. With no off road aftermarket parts, this truck has been able to take me to some really off road places, the stock frame, suspension, etc. Have the ability to get you almost anywhere you could ever need to go.

I love this truck it is such a great size and performance is awesome! I use it to get to hunting spots off road and handles great good mpg. Only issue I have had is the cruise control sometimes sits a gear low and the rpms are high. The sound system in the truck is also really good.

Tacoma is great with some minor things to consider.
Has good mileage and rarely has problems except when you do not run it enough in the winter time and have get a jumper cable to start it up. Has not been in any accidents. The tires in it have to take nitrogen. I am keeping this vehicle for a long time until I find another one like it.

Small compact truck that can get any job done a bigger truck can.
My white Toyota Tacoma offers spacious room in the cab even with it being a smaller truck, it is perfect for loading up the truck to go camping, fishing and hunting. I use it to load up my four wheeler which fits perfectly in the bed of my truck. Also, I attach the boat to the back of it and it pulls it with ease and the turn radius is outstanding even with putting 33s and a two inch lift on it. My dad had a 1998 Toyota Tacoma and I loved him so I always wanted one of my own and we finally got one. I would not trade this truck for anything. The only problem is there is a seal leak somewhere and the floor mats get a little damp when it rains.

Bought this vehicle new. It has always been a very reliable vehicle. I have never had any serious problem with the performance. The one thing that I am not fond of is when parked and putting into 4 wheel drive sometimes you have to put into drive before it goes in.

Gas mileage can be a bit low. Great reliable vehicle with no mechanical problems so far. Very versatile and fun truck. The resale value for Toyota trucks is excellent. I have yet to replace any. Major parts after 130,000 miles. If I was in the market, I would buy it again.

Love this truck! Never had any issues with my Tacoma. Roomy front and back seats. I put aftermarket tires on it so the gas mileage is about 12 miles per gallon, which is the only not great thing. In the bed of the truck you can plug anything in that needs power. Pretty amazing.

My Toyota Tacoma is fast, reliable, and efficient. Gets the job done
I own a 2010 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner. It is spacious and drives really well on freeway. It is my daily driver so it has a lot more miles than my other vehicles but runs smooth even though it has a six inch lift. Only problem is I spend 70 - 80 U.S dollars a week for gas, but it comes with the territory. The aux port doesn't work anymore and is a bummer for me because I hate waiting through commercials on the radio. I recently put a new transmission due to pulling heavy duty trailers which is not recommended.
accountCircle Rebecca A on February 1, 2021
My opinion is Toyotas run far better than other models.
Any problems I have with my truck is always cheap to fix. Toyota is great that way. As long as you keep up on everyday maintenance it doesn't have major issues. The price on replacement parts are fair and most times on the cheap side. My a/c gets cool quick and stays cool if just parked idling. My stick radio system is amazing for being stock.

Good, even great for those who love the outdoors.
Very reliable, I routinely drive it on long expeditions that involve both highway and off road travel. My Tacoma has been reliable, safe, and comfortable and at times has served as my bed for extended periods of time. On hunting trips in the cold it handles snow and rough terrain nicely, and in the summer it traverses dirt and rocks with ease. The interior is easily cleaned, though leather seats would be a valuable investment for a lifestyle that is heavy on the outdoors and low on the upkeep. I am of average size, and I find the Tacoma go provide adequate space, though I would not describe it as extremely roomy. The gas mileage is acceptable provided what I put the vehicle through.

2010 Toyota Tacoma experience; pros and cons.
The vehicle is reliable, spacious and stylish. Unfortunately, however, it did not come with cruise control so I had to have that installed. I feel like this is a great mid-sized truck, plenty of room with the six foot bed and plenty of room for passengers in the crew cab. I do not use my truck for hauling though so I am not sure how it performs compared to full sized trucks in that department. It also is not exactly a super smooth ride.

Great reliability and capability
Over 110,000 miles and it's never been in the shop. Tires, oil/filter, brake pads and a few tail lights due to my own negligence is all that's been done. Very reliable and very capable truck. Has towed large campers and trailers with no issue at all. Many long trips and it's been comfortable and, with the bed cover, great for luggage. If I had to point out any "flaw" it would be that the truck does have a fairly high amount of road and wind noise. To be fair I have off road tires on it so that certainly doesn't help. Awesome truck that still looks fantastic and still gets lots of compliments and offers from people to buy it off me. You just can't go wrong with a Tacoma.

Overall great truck. Does everything I need, yet still very maneuverable and has an awesome turning radius. No problems pulling into tight parking spots.
