Alex Showalter
Aug 22, 2023

Maintenance costs are lower than many competitors, passenger room is good in the second row and the optional stereo system is good.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The engines are weak compared to some other SUVs, the suspension is floaty and there’s no standard safety technology.

Is the 2018 Dodge Journey a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 7/10 – 2018 is a fine year for the Dodge Journey, although it’s still mediocre compared to a lot of other midsize SUVs on the market. Owner reviews praise the low purchase cost, passenger room, along with the smooth suspension.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 7/10 – Interior materials are okay for a midsize SUV, the seats are comfortable on longer drives, cargo space is also similar to many competitors.
  • Reliability 7/10 – Reliability ratings are improved from earlier years. Avoid models from 20092017 since they have engine and electrical issues, while 20182020 are more reliable.
  • Performance 7/10 – Performance is poor from the standard 4-cylinder engine, while the V6 offers a decent amount of power for a midsize SUV.
  • Safety 6/10 – The 2018 Journey is reasonably safe, earning 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests. Optional upgrades include a rearview camera and parking sensors.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is okay at up to 21 MPG, giving 430 miles of range out of the 20.5 gallon tank. Gas costs are $11 higher than average, at $221 per month.
  • Value 7/10 – The 2018 Dodge Journey is cheaper than most other midsize SUVs on the market, although rapid depreciation lowers its overall value score as it ages.

She moves when I move. The radio is really loud.
Brings comfort and style. Speakers are loud. Big engine. Very fast. Had to get dents. Hard body. Big tires. No sunroof. Or Bluetooth. Easy to unlock and start up. 3 rows of seats. Small yet big trunk. Fun. Safe. Reliable. Gets me from work to home.

I told you everything about my car.
Car seats are comfortable and brakes are wonderful everything about the car is good and the gas is really good to.

My journey a 4 cylinder 4 door midsize SUV it seats 7 comfortably
The only problem I have with my car is I wish the Bluetooth radio was easier to connect other than that I love my journey, it's comfortable and fuel efficient yet has the power I wanted over all I think it's a really great car for the price, equal quality of other SUVs Without the really high price

Safety I feel like this vehicle is very safe we have been on several road trips
I love this vehicle has been very reliable for us to take on road trips. It fits all the grandkids and it's easy to grocery shop and get all the groceries in the back. I feel like it as a very safe vehicle and we have had no issues with it. We have had it one year

Best family vehicle on the market.
Love this vehicle. It has a spacious interior which is what we were looking for. The price was reasonable for the amount of car we got. I would highly suggest it to anyone whether you are a big or small family. Also, it is great for trips! We have plenty of room for luggage along with guests and no one is hitting their knees on the seat in front of them.

The shifting is smooth, and aerodynamic interior display is phenomenal.
The performance of the vehicle is balance, smooth riding and shifting. Reliability lives up to quality standards I rate it 4 out of 5 stars. Comfort is very nice, spacious room. Features are state of the art technology lives up to up to date standards. Problems there are not vents for air/heat for rear passengers.

The comfy, dodge journey with a lot of room.
I have never had any problems with this vehicle thus far. It is third row seating so you are able to fit 3 car seats comfortably in the car. There is no navigation but there is uconnect for your phone. It is nice to use the uconnect when you are driving down the road so that you are not distracted on the phone. The seats are comfortable and it's a good car for a long distance drive.

Another amazing dodge machine!
I love my vehicle. It gets get gas mileage on the highway. The steering is smooth and precise. With the braking system it stops on a dime. It's quiet and keyless entry. The seats are comfortable and evenly proportional. Headrest are adjustable. The navigational system is easy to read and operate. The sunroof is easy to operate and adds value and looks to the car's exterior/interior. Systems may be operated from the steering column. The overall body style is sleek and dynamic. The wheels and rims are an asset.

Most journeys have transmission problems not a good thing
It's seat aren't practical for 3 car seats when you need to put fourth child in the back row

The seatbelt light beats until you buckle your seatbelt.
It does not drive well. It has three rows but you cannot get out once you are in the last row. You cannot reach the aux button because it is so deep under the radio. The gas mileage is short. The good thing is the seat belt light beeps when you need to put your seatbelt on.

Do not buy this vehicle, you can get better for the price.
I have two car seats in the car. There is no room in the front seat with two car seats. My husband can not fit comfortably anywhere in my car because of there being zero room with car seats. When on any kind of incline my car does not like to shift out of park. There is no Bluetooth which these days there should be. Seats are not automatic. I do like the rear view camera. And it is been reliable but there is just way nicer cars out there for the price you pay.

It is a good family vehicle.
I am pretty sure we got the knock off journey. It does not have a back up camera and it is a 2018. Does not have all the gadgets like heated seats power seats no sunroof and no leather seats. It is also very slow. It does well in the snow surprisingly, it does not slide all over the road. It is a good family vehicle but very disappointed with the features. Overall it is nice but also looks like a van but that is okay. We're going to keep it for a couple years then trade it in.

Poor quality
Bought a brand new 2018 had nothing but problems the back tires are bald at 20,000 km it is front wheel drive took it in multiple times but dodge says nothing wrong to it fo a wheel alignment st diffrent place they said it would not pass an inspection the alignment was in the red also the door would not shut it it to dodge 3 times they say they fixed it but still has a gap and not even straight on body line

Started off as a nice vehicle. Until it started having recalls for the dash and radio. And other recalls. I would recommend it to someone with a small family.
For it to be a 2018 dodge vehicle I figured it would be more spacious and updated. Also I would figure it had less recalls on it.

Better warranty for my bucks.
Not too comfortable gas mileage and not many good features would love to. Have heated seats and automatic trunk lift and more room in the third row no good gas mileage and a better warranty not a good warranty and I really do not prefer a dodge, it truly not a good quality car.

What Do Critics Say About the Dodge Journey?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2018 Dodge Journey is dated and mediocre compared to other midsize SUVs, with average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Journey at 3.9/5, enjoying the low purchase price for a midsize SUV, but doesn’t like the weak and outdated base engine.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Journey a 3.7/5, praising the spacious seating area for up to 7 passengers, but owners don’t like the lack of standard safety technology.

What Common Problems Does the 2018 Dodge Journey Have?

Common problems found on the 2018 Dodge Journey include the transmission slipping, the rearview camera not working, along with Bluetooth connectivity issues. Overall, these problems are similar to some other midsize SUVs, leading to average repair costs as it ages.

The transmission slipping is the most widespread complaint on 2018 Dodge Journey models, showing up at around 60,000 miles. Usually the problem is caused by a transmission software issue which can be fixed for around $150. There are some rare reports of damage to the transmission internals, which cost over $1,500 to rebuild.

The rearview camera not working is another problem mentioned on the 2018 Journey within the first 10,000 miles. There are software updates available for the stereo system which improves the reliability. Dealerships usually will install these updates for free, while some charge around $50 for labor.

Bluetooth connectivity issues have also been reported by 2018 Journey owners at around 1,000 miles. This is another software problem which Dodge has released updates for. Most dealerships will install the latest version of the infotainment software for free, while others charge around $50.

There are six recalls on the 2018 Dodge Journey, which is slightly worse than many competitors. The most serious recall covers the voltage regulator, which can cause the SUV to stall. Dodge will replace the powertrain control module on affected models for free. Other recalls include rear brake caliper piston coating, along with the amber side reflectors, which Dodge will also fix for free.

How Long Will the 2018 Dodge Journey Last?

A well-maintained 2018 Dodge Journey can last around 200,000 miles, which is less than some other midsize SUVs like the Toyota Highlander. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to many competitors, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $397 per year.

As a used 2018 Dodge Journey reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the emergency brake cable for $175, starter motor costing $400, along with the timing belt tensioner which costs nearly $575.

accountCircle Meg B

It is a reliable vehicle. I have not encountered any problems with it that are unique to the vehicle. The tire sensors go off easily but that seems to be par for the course with those.

accountCircle Emily H

Yes it is reliable. The only issues that I have ran into it something with my filter, the one we bought did not fit in the place for it very well.

accountCircle Alisha R

It is very reliable and gets the job done I love my vehicle I would tell anybody to get them one best ever.

accountCircle Heather V

Yes it has been very reliable for my family and I. For in town use and for out of town use as well. The room it has for my three children in the back and for my husband and I up front. It is been reliable through every weather condition we've encountered like snow and icy roads.

accountCircle Stepjanoe L

No problems so far hopefully will stay nice and trustworthy gets me where I need to go when I need to g.

accountCircle Ashley E

It does not have any problems at all. It is very reliable and I have had no issues in the one year I have owned it.

accountCircle Glenn P

I haven't had any problems with the vehicle up to this point just normal wear and tear items nothing major to this point.

accountCircle Mikel G

I recently took the car for a cross country road through from Chicago to Tucson and back - the vehicle was comfortable, reliable, and easy to maintain for the trip. The vehicle gets a little sluggish if you go over the miles between oil changes, otherwise very strong mechanically.

How Is the Technology?

Standard entertainment technology is fairly basic, offering a relatively small 4.3-inch touchscreen interface. Optional upgrades include a larger 8.4-inch touchscreen with Uconnect software, and a more powerful stereo system.

The 2019 Dodge Journey doesn’t have any standard safety technology. Optional upgrades are also pretty basic and include a rearview camera and rear parking sensors.

Is the 2018 Dodge Journey a Good Value?

Yes, the 2018 Dodge Journey is a decent value, although it’s still not a great midsize SUV compared to a lot of the more up-to-date competitors on the market. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $13,150 to $25,990, making it less than a Honda Pilot or Ford Edge. When new, the price range was $22,995 to $34,995. Depreciation is worse than many competitors, losing nearly 15% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Dodge Journey?

There are four main models of the 2018 Dodge Journey offered, from the entry-level SE, the popular Dodge Journey Crossroad, through to the more well-equipped GT. The Journey comes standard with front-wheel drive, while all-wheel drive is available as an optional upgrade.

  • Height-adjustable driver seat
  • 60/40-split second-row seats with slide and recline
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Keyless ignition and entry
  • Six-speaker sound system with a 4.3-inch touchscreen
  • Optional: Connectivity package (Bluetooth, satellite radio, USB port, voice commands, leather-wrapped steering wheel)

What Engines Come In the Dodge Journey?

The 2018 Dodge Journey offers two engine options:

  • 4-Liter 4-Cylinder Engine: This base engine generates 173 horsepower and comes with a four-speed automatic transmission helping it get up to 21 MPG. Unfortunately, its 0-60 MPH time is on the slower side, taking around 10 seconds.
  • 6-Liter V6 Engine: For those looking for more power, the Journey offers a 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces 283 horsepower at up to 19 MPG. It comes with a six-speed automatic transmission, providing a smoother and more responsive drive. This engine takes around 7.5 seconds to reach 0-60 MPH.

What Colors Does the Dodge Journey Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Dodge Journey?

The 2018 Dodge Journey offers a mix of comfort and practicality, making it a suitable option for families and daily commuters. The Journey provides seating for up to seven passengers across three rows. Limited legroom in the third row makes it better for children or shorter adults. The cushioning in the seats is generally considered comfortable for shorter trips, though some reviewers have noted that the padding may not be plush enough for long journeys.

Available features such as adjustable front seats, optional heated front seats, and dual-zone climate control can enhance the comfort level. The ride quality is decent, with the suspension absorbing most minor road imperfections, but some critics have mentioned that it might feel somewhat firm over more substantial bumps. In summary, the 2018 Dodge Journey offers acceptable comfort for its class, but those seeking a more luxurious feel may want to explore other options.

How Much Storage Space Does the Dodge Journey Have?

The 2018 Dodge Journey offers ample cargo space that can easily adapt to different situations. With all seats in place, the Dodge Journey provides a storage area of 10.7 cubic feet behind the third row. If you need more space, folding down the third row expands the cargo area to 37 cubic feet, and folding down both the second and third rows maximizes the cargo space to an impressive 67.6 cubic feet.

To give you an idea of what this space can handle, 10.7 cubic feet might be enough to store a few suitcases or grocery bags. With the third row down, larger items such as a bicycle or small furniture can easily fit. If you need to transport even bulkier items, the full 67.6 cubic feet could accommodate things like a kayak or multiple sets of golf clubs. Whether you’re planning a family vacation, moving, or just running daily errands, the 2018 Dodge Journey’s versatile storage space has you covered.

VehicleHistory Image

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The first generation of the Dodge Journey was launched for the 2009 model year, and discontinued after 2020.

2015: There are no major changes from prior years of the Journey.

2016: No changes from earlier years.

2017: A new flagship GT model replaces the R/T.

2018: Third row is now standard on all models.

2019: SXT model removed from the lineup and more features available on the SE model.

2020: Entry-level model renamed to SE Value, V6 engine not offered, final model year.

How Does the Dodge Journey Compare to the Competition?

The 2018 Dodge Journey is a decent midsize SUV for shoppers on a budget. Unfortunately, it still lags behind a lot of the competition and is outdated.

The Dodge Grand Caravan is a minivan built by Dodge which costs about $2,000 more. Passenger and cargo space are both better in the Dodge Grand Caravan, while the Dodge Journey’s available all-wheel drive system is more capable in the snow. We recommend the Dodge Grand Caravan if you need to carry people, while the Dodge Journey is a better choice for people looking for an SUV.

The Nissan Rogue is a smaller SUV which can be found for about $1,500 more. Standard technology is better in the Nissan Rogue, while the Dodge Journey has more passenger space. We recommend the Nissan Rogue since it’s a more up-to-date SUV.

accountCircle Glenn P

Very good vehicle smooth ride great interior and awesome look from the outside. Matching rims is a plus and the size as well.

accountCircle Mikel G

The price of these makes it the most affordable 7 passenger SUV - based on my own independent research. With that being said, the base model is a bit stripped down when stacked against its direct competitors (domestically). In dash display and basic slow runs should be the standard offering at minimum. Aside from that, the vehicle performs well and is very reliable.

I have had no issues with my journey. It is comfortable and has great gas mileage for a crossover vehicle with 3rd row seats. The price was also reasonable when compared to other SUV. It is not very spacious on the back seat and truck is very small when third row is up. Also kind of bummed that it does not have the backup camera. We’ve had a few issues with the sensors and the engine light comes up a lot. It is an ok vehicle. Wish it was more spacious though.

Terrible
I loved my 2018 Journey until we moved to Florida and my wife traded in her mini van for a smaller suv and my journey became the family car. On a 90 degree day with the journey full of kids we found out that there’s no rear ac vents. What vehicle with a third row where kids always sit doesn’t have any ventilation. That shouldn’t be a luxury, that should be standard.
accountCircle Dujuana D on May 30, 2021
I love my car but it is tight.
Its hard to reach the USB ports. The center console is small. The 3rd row seat is tight. There isn't enough room for a purse or other small necessary items a driver may need to access while driving. The seats are a bit hard when talking long drives. There should be better ac flow to the back seats or another set of blowers.

The vehicle is accommodating to more passengers. I would not recommend for tall people. There are minor electrical glitches that occur but they manage to fix themselves once restarted. I like the cat for the most part. This really difficult to get 4 kids in and out, especially if you have two car seats. Sometimes the front lights will fill up with water from rain. Decided to purchase this vehicle over another one and I am so grateful I did. There’s so much room with 3 rows of seats, 2 captains chairs in the front, all wheel drive, 6 cylinder, 6 speed transmission, low crawl gears for bad weather, 17 in town and 24-26 Hwy. Drives like a dream, so smooth, automatic lights, so many features inside. Temperature control for the front and separate for the back, room for luggage even when the third seat is being used. Tons of leg room and bust in storage or coolers in the floorboards in the second row.

The sea journey is a good vehicle. My previous vehicle was having issues and I needed a car quick and inexpensive. There are features I wanted, and had on the journey I was going to purchase but a last min check for recalls took that vehicle away. The car itself has been great for our family. The feature that sold us on the car was the fact that it had built-in booster seats for the middle row. It also has third row which is great. We love the DVD player, but it could have been placed in a better spot. When the DVD player is in use, it can block the rear view mirror.

For one, I love the color of it. It is all black. I also love the touchscreen radio system it comes with. Not to mention, it is very spacious, plus all of the back seats lay down, good for times when I have to haul something big. It is also 4-wheel drive, which makes me feel more comfortable and in control while I am driving. Also, the light tint on the windows really come in handy, especially during the summer when it is very hot because it help keep you a little bit cooler. 2018 dodge journey as a family car.
The 2018 dodge journey se has been a good family car for our 6 person family. It is reliable and does not give us any mechanical issues. The only thing we do not like is the second row not having captain chairs for easier access to the back row. Also the Bluetooth radio does not connect right away to our phones and sometimes will not connect. The only other con is that there is not enough leg room throughout the car.

Suspension issues. Plenty of power great on gas mileage. Seats 8. Cd player rear air. Easy to park. Fun to drive. It's dark gray. Reliable. Plenty of storage. I love the hatchback for easy access to haul groceries. Power windows locks. I Love all dodge has to offer in the dodge journey.

Dodge journey is reliable, comfortable, and great to drive around.
It would be nice if it was made apparent on how to change the battery in the key fob, trying to find it online is tedious. The car has good space, great on road trips, although I wish it had an automatic close and shut trunk for the grocery shopping trips or our family trips trying to unload the car. The drive is smooth and very comfortable for sleeping in on 14 hr trips, I love the Bluetooth connect for audio and the charging ports available in the front, back and trunk area but there is only one USB connect another would be nice.

The 2018 dodge journey is a nice small third row SUV, available at a great price!
Pros: the journey gets decent gas mileage, is on the small side for a third row SUV, and is sleek looking. Drives very well. Cons: the third row does not have very much leg room. There is not much space in the hatch unless the third row is laid down.

Wonderful family vehicle. Love it.
Only problem is wish trunk was bigger also that the gas cap light didn't come on so much. Love the car otherwise it drives so smooth. Comfort wise it is very family friendly. I am a family of 5 and we ride very well in it. I feel it is definitely very reliable for a vehicle.

I love all the room for my children.
This car is absolutely amazing. It has a great backup camera features. I has a key fob where you just press a button and your car will crank up. There is a ton of room for my three children. They range from all ages and sizes and my son plays football so that means I am always needing all the extra space that I can get. It has very nice room. I love that it has accessories on the steering wheel.

Luxury at a reasonable price.
Great car! Love having lots of room (seats 8) and the interior is so chic! The ride is very smooth. Would prefer if it had a sunroof, so I am a little bummed about that. Overall, it is a great car with nice features that feels luxurious for a reasonable price.

Dodge journey reliable but not the best.
Car does not seem to shift gears easily when on the gas. When you try to get on the freeway it gets up to 5 rpm before it shifts. Windshield seems low quality, cracked easily. Third row is great but not much storage when seats are all up. Hard to get into the third row.

The perfect car for families who are always on the go.
I bought my car brand new and have not had any issues with it in all conditions even in snow and ice. It is a smooth right and very comfortable. I have room for me, my two kids, and two large breed dogs. We have taken it up the mountain and it handles it beautifully. There is ample space for leg room and where we all have our own space without feeling cramped and smashed against each other.

2018 dodge journey: smooth.
My 2018 dodge journey is a smooth ride, has loudspeakers, gets good gas mileage, and has easy handling. I have been having issues with my phone connecting with Bluetooth, but that could be my phone. When it does connect, I can even have my text messages read to me. I would recommend this vehicle to anyone.

It is a crossroad and has some hidden storage areas and is really a good vehicle reliable
My dodge is really nice and drives good. I have not had any problems with it. It is pretty good on gas and has been extremely reliable. I would completely recommend this vehicle to anyone who is looking for something with storage but doesn't want an suv.

All about the dodge journey and it is features.
I have a 2018 dodge journey I love that it is black and came stocked with black alloy rims. I love the speaker sound it drives very smooth it is roomy with the third row seats just does not have a lot of room for groceries I love that it has different compartments for storage of smaller things. It also didn't come with Bluetooth capability but it does have an auxiliary cord option but for a 2018 model it should have Bluetooth.

No third row needed in the dodge journey.
The technology is not the best. It does not connect to our phones. I enjoy the third seat option in this dodge journey,, but it is so crowded. It is not really suitable for 7 people. Way too restricted. It would be better not to have the third row option. It sounds good to have it, but adults can not fit in the third row. Plus it makes the driver place his seat up in the up position just to fit 7 adults as well as the passengers in the front.

It is a crossover between van and SUV.
I have had no problems with my vehicle; it is very reliable; it is very comfortable and very nice for long rides; it has radio controls and volume controls in back of the steering wheel, it has Bluetooth connection, it has a large back area for transporting goods, groceries, etc.

How spacious the vehicle is.
I have not any problems. It is a great family vehicle, it is 3rd row and serves my family well. It's not too big and it's not too small.I have a four cyl and it gets up and goes just fine. The only thing I would recommend is getting the all wheel drive model.

2018 dodge journey with 3rd row seating.
The dodge journey is dependable. I have had no issues mechanically with the vehicle. I do find that it has a problem staying at speed when cruise control is set. The third row seat is accommodating for small children, but offers no leg room for older children.

It's a good and practical type of vehicle to own for a small family.
We super love our Journey because of its good gas mileage, a/c works very well as soon as it's starts and has big room for bulk stuff. We just wish that the gas tank could have been a bit bigger.

I like the rearview camera and the compartments.
Very comfortable to drive dependable no problems. It has ac vents in the back which I like. It has 3 rows of seats so everyone is comfortable. I have had no mechanical issues it has rearview camera when in reverse also has compartments to put things in.. Doors open pretty wide.

Plenty of room holds my kayaks on the roof very nicely.
I am really enjoying my journey. There is plenty of space for supplies and the kids. Love having the optional third row, it folds down to make more room for groceries. The coolers in the floorboards come in handy for long trips. Drives great feels safe and reliable.

Favorite vehicle I have owned so far!
I love this car! The only thing is you have to shut the doors hard but other than that it is my favorite car to far. It has a large touch screen. The heat seat and steering wheel start automatically when it's so cold outside. Have the 3rd row of seats that fold down easy and gives me the space to do whatever I need.

Radio and Bluetooth and car.
It is great nothing wrong with it good gas mileage and all. Runs smooth some has Bluetooth and some do not. The only thing I have a problem is hooking it up sometimes with the radio with the Bluetooth. It wants to come off and on sometimes. But other than that it is a great car love it.

Dodge journey overall good car.
I just bought the car a few months ago. So it is still new to us. It had 10000 miles on it so it was a lot cheaper than buying a brand new one. It has sunroof navigation leather interior premium sound. Very comfortable and roomy. So far it is performing good. The only thing I do not like is the tires on it. They are kumho tires.

The dodge journey is my dream car. I have plenty of room to load up the children.
It is super comfortable. The dodge journey has great gas mileage. There is also tons of room for storage inside and on top of the vehicle. The dodge journey drives very smoothly. I do not have any complaints about this car. I really enjoy driving it.

All together great family road trip car.
This vehicle is great on gas. Great for long car rides with the family. Great seating up to 7 people. 2 built in booster seats in the middle row are awesome. Need to move, all rear passenger seats fold down to provide more space. Small storage boxes in the middle row and rear of vehicle for small items. Bluetooth in this vehicle, great for navigation or listening to music. SiriusXM also available.

Flaws of the Dodge Journey.
Only thing I have had problems with is the console area up front is hard to reach and also to plug a charger in is hard. And when folding the seats down in the back they are not easy. Really heavy. The carpet in the back trunk area is really hard to clean also. I wish it was rubber and the seats were leather. I gave dogs and the hair is ridiculous to try and get out of the carpet. It eats gas too.
