The upgraded stereo system is great, there’s plenty of room in the first two rows and cargo space is decent.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The base engine is weak for a midsize SUV, steering feels loose and there are not a lot of safety features available.

Is the 2019 Dodge Journey a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 7/10 – 2019 is a decent year for the Dodge Journey, although it lags behind a lot of other newer SUVs. Owner reviews praise the dependable engines, low running costs, along with the comfortable seats.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 7/10 – Interior materials are fairly basic for a midsize SUV, the seats are supportive, cargo space is also average for an SUV of its size.
  • Reliability 8/10 – There are no widespread problems on the 2019 Journey. Avoid models from 20092017 since they have engine problems, while models from 20182020 are more dependable.
  • Performance 7/10 – The standard four-cylinder engine is weak, while the V6 offers reasonable power for a midsize SUV, although it’s still not fast.
  • Safety 6/10 – The 2019 Journey earns 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests. It comes standard with a rearview camera, while optional upgrades include parking sensors.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is fine at up to 21 MPG, offering 430 miles of range from the 20.5 gallon tank. Gas costs are $9 higher than average, at $249 per month.
  • Value 7/10 – The 2019 Dodge Journey is less expensive than other midsize SUVs, although fast depreciation lowers its overall value score as it ages.

Journey dodge is really comfortable and spacious.
The vehicle is really good and comfortable. There’s no problems and the performance is really reliable. The vehicle has some nice features as well in the interior and exterior of the vehicle. It is really comfortable in the inside because it is spacious and has a lot of room in the seats.

One thing I feel is very interesting about the car is how family friendly it is.
No problems with the vehicle what so ever. The car drives smooth and is very comfortable to sit in with many features that are perfect for a family of 3-4. Although I wish the car came with a spare tire but you get what you pay for. The car is very reliable and on the inside has so much space in the interior of the car. The vehicle also comes with adjustable seats for those who like to sit in the back and relax so yes the car is perfect for those long hour family road trips.

Dodge journey: great cost effectiveness.
Haven't had any problems whatsoever with my journey. I love it! Very cost effective option for medium sized families. Great gas mileage and fuel economy. Only possible downside I can think of is that this particular trim does not have Bluetooth but that is not a problem with an aux adapter for your phone.

Perfect for family with small kids.
I love my dodge journey. It is very reliable and fits my family of 5. I can see us outgrowing it as my kids get older, but it does the job. The 3rd row is a plus. When the 3rd row is let down there is plenty of room for groceries or hauling large items.

I love my dodge journey, it is absolutely amazing.
There is. A problem with my dodge joiner I love it. It is my affordable way of having a SUV. The only thing I do not like is the back up camera is in the rear view mirror, which makes it kind of hard to use. I wanted a more updated radio system but that is a easy fix.

Safe and handles great on the road.
The journey is great vehicle with seating comfort for all and leg room. I do not like the tiny glove box and cup holders though. I find it hard to get myself out of with bad hips though. Did not realize that when I purchased it. Love the way it handles on the road and very little road noise. I feel safe in it for sure.

I like that it's good on gas. Its spacious and very smooth ride.
I love it because it has a 3rd row seat which fits more people, like my grandkids. It's good on gas. When the 3rd row seat is put away, the back is very spacious. I like that it has a rear view camera. And I like that it has ac vents in the back seats.

Love that it's a great alternative to getting a van or any other family car.
Very reliable and safe family car. However, I wish my model had Bluetooth and GPS capabilities. The space is very convenient for my big family. There is plenty of space for all of us. It's unfortunate that my model is not 4 wheel drive but it has plenty of safety features. The air circulated very well and the heat works great.

Not worth the money, poor choice of SUV.
Comfortability especially for as many seats there are is little to none, it is small and cramped and there’s no space at all for anything. It is definitely not worth the money they are selling them for, and I would never recommend buying one for the price or the space.
accountCircle Heather W
Slow with no amenities. Not my favorite vehicle.
The journey has very little technology feature. Also it tends to be very slow. It has decent gas mileage. It was a needed buy and was the only thing available at the time. It has cloth seats with no heated seats. No sunroof and no Bluetooth. Just wish it had more features.

Great for a small size family or transitioning vehicle.
The inside is small! I have 3 boys and definitely not a long term vehicle for us! Decent gas mileage we live far from stores so this is a plus for us great to have a new vehicle not have to worry about breaking down! Backup camera is in the rearview mirror it is weird and definitely an adjustment! Great for short term use or a family of 3!
accountCircle Allison V
My vehicle is spacious and works great if you are a low income, large family.
I have had a really unfortunate experience with my vehicle. The check engine light starting coming on within 3 weeks of purchasing it, brand new. I have had to bring it to the shop 6 times within a year. Always the sensors and technology issues. Also, the a/c does not seem to get as cold as I'd like it.
accountCircle Kennedy S
This car is stuck in the early 2010s.
Sometimes we have to turn the car off so we can get the Bluetooth or iPod to work. It is a nice car as far as how big it is goes, but it does not have a sunroof and the screen where the radio is seems outdated. We like the fact that there are coolers and lots of storage.
accountCircle Sandranita C
Storage and reasonable price.
The dodge journey has several storage components and third row seating. Typical speed for a 4 cylinder drive. Oil change life expectancy is fantastic. Decent gas mileage. Backup camera automatically appears when vehicle is put in reverse. Great pricing for all the extras.
accountCircle Abdiel A
I bought the car because the family was growing. I needed a car to fit my needs.
I like the look of the vehicle. I also enjoy the extra seat in the back. It drives well and meets all of my family's need. It is more full economical than other vehicles that I have owned. I really enjoyed the color and its performance for a family vehicle.
accountCircle Christina I
Dodge journey Bluetooth and space issues.
Overall the vehicle is a good family vehicle, not to terrible on gas, I do have issues with the seats it is they are a bit uncomfortable for extended periods of time, and there are issues with the Bluetooth in the vehicle some days it will connect others it absolutely refuses to. It can be frustrating. The rear seats really do not have any leg room for child or adult, so that can pose an issue.

What Do Critics Say About the Dodge Journey?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2019 Dodge Journey is dated and only a mediocre performer, but gets good owner satisfaction scores as it ages.
  • Edmunds rates the Journey at 4.1/5, enjoying the practical third row of seating, but doesn’t like the outdated base engine and transmission.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Dodge Journey a 3.7/5, praising the comfortable seats throughout the cabin, but owners don’t like the lack of driver assistance features.

What Common Problems Does the 2019 Dodge Journey Have?

Common problems found on the 2019 Dodge Journey include excessive brake wear, check engine lights, along with some stereo system issues. Overall, these problems are similar to other midsize SUVs from the same year, with average repair costs as the Journey ages.

Excessive brake wear is the most widespread complaint from 2019 Journey owners, showing up within the first 20,000 miles. The front brake pads in particular, tend to wear down quicker than on other SUVs, and have to be replaced. Changing out the brake pads costs around $150, while new rotors are an additional $400 if they’ve been worn down.

Check engine lights are another issue mentioned by some Dodge Journey owners within the first 10,000 miles. To diagnose the source of a check engine light, you will need to use an OBD-II scan tool to read the ECU for codes. Some of the most common check engine light issues include loose gas caps, along with some engine sensor issues.

Stereo system issues have also been reported on the 2019 Journey within the first 2,000 miles. There are software updates for the stereo system which improve its reliability. Many dealerships will install the software updates for free, while others charge around $50 for the labor.

There are no recalls on the 2019 Dodge Journey, which is better than other midsize SUVs from the same year. Having no recalls simply means there have not been any widespread issues or problems that affect the safety of the vehicle.

How Long Will the 2019 Dodge Journey Last?

A well-maintained 2019 Dodge Journey can last around 200,000 miles, which is shorter than other midsize SUVs like the Toyota Highlander. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to many competitors, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $522 per year.

As a used 2019 Journey reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the exhaust manifold gasket for $200, the axle shaft seals costing $300, along with the strut bearings, which cost around $450.

accountCircle Danielle T

It is very reliable no problems at all. I would recommend it to someone with a small family looking to upgrade to a crossover.

accountCircle Vance L

Yes, the journey is reliable. There has been no issues. It’s brand new but everything seems to be safe and reliable.

accountCircle Sarah H

I have not had a problem with it yet. I would say it is built well and reliable. It warms up quickly in the winter which is great. It has an automatic start that works pretty far away which is also great in the winter

accountCircle Zoe V

It is very reliable. I have not had any problems with it so far. I have never had it break down. Just routine maintenance has been needed.

accountCircle Michael C

The Dodge Journey is a very reliable car. I've never had any problems with it at all, and I've had one for approx. two and half years (had an older model before)

How Is the Technology?

The standard entertainment technology is fairly basic, only offering a relatively small 4.3-inch touchscreen. Optional upgrades include a larger 8.4-inch touchscreen along with a premium sound system with a subwoofer.

Standard safety technology is worse than many competitors, and only features a rearview camera. The optional safety technology only includes rear parking sensors.

Is the 2019 Dodge Journey a Good Value?

Yes, the 2019 Dodge Journey is a good value since it’s cheaper than some competitors, although it’s not as up-to-date either. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $15,525 to $27,519, making it less than a Subaru Outback or Honda Pilot. When new, the price range was $23,895 to $35,545. Depreciation is worse than some other SUVs, losing about 12% of its current value per year.

  • 3.6L V6 engine: Available in the higher trims, this engine ramps up the power with 283 horsepower at up to 19 MPG. It comes with a six-speed automatic transmission. This engine, being more potent, improves the 0-60 MPH time, generally clocking it in around 7.5 seconds.

What Colors Does the Dodge Journey Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Dodge Journey?

The 2019 Dodge Journey is crafted with a blend of functionality and comfort, making it a suitable option for families and long drives. The vehicle seats up to seven passengers, and while the first two rows offer reasonable space and comfort, the third row is best suited for children or shorter trips due to its tighter legroom. One of the standout features of the Journey’s interior is its soft-touch materials that add a touch of luxury, even if it doesn’t rival some higher-end competitors.

The ride itself is generally smooth, with the suspension doing a commendable job of absorbing most road imperfections, providing a comfortable drive in most conditions. Additionally, the Journey offers a plethora of features, such as available heated front seats and a tri-zone automatic climate control, enhancing the comfort level for all passengers. However, potential buyers might want to note that while the Journey does offer a sense of coziness, it may not match the sophistication or plush feel of some of its contemporaries in the segment.

How Much Storage Space Does the Dodge Journey Have?

The 2019 Dodge Journey is designed with families and travel enthusiasts in mind, offering a commendable amount of storage space to accommodate various needs. Regarding its cargo capacity, when all three rows are in use, the Journey provides 10.7 cubic feet of space, enough to fit a few grocery bags or a stroller.

When you fold down the third row, the space expands to 37 cubic feet, which is enough for several suitcases, sports equipment, or larger shopping hauls. Maximize your cargo capacity by folding down both the second and third rows, and you’ll get a generous 67.6 cubic feet, ample room for larger items like bicycles, furniture, or bigger outdoor gear. In addition to this, the Journey features a plethora of small storage compartments, including an in-floor storage bin in the rear cargo area and a concealed storage compartment under the front passenger seat cushion, making it an ideal choice for those who need versatile and organized storage solutions on the go.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The first generation of the Dodge Journey was introduced for the 2009 model year, and was removed from production after 2020.

2015: There are no updates from previous years of the Journey.

2016: No changes from earlier years.

2017: The flagship GT model replaces the R/T.

2018: Standard third-row offered on all models.

2019: SXT model removed from the lineup, and more features added to the SE model.

2020: Final model year for the Dodge Journey, entry-level model renamed SE Value, V6 engine discontinued.

How Does the Dodge Journey Compare to the Competition?

The 2019 Dodge Journey is a decent midsize SUV if you’re on a budget and looking for something to get you from point A to B, but it’s very outdated compared to the competition.

The Kia Sorento is another midsize SUV, which can be found for around $3,000 more. Standard technology features are better in the Kia Sorento, while the Dodge Journey has a bit more space in the third row. We recommend the Dodge Journey since there are fewer engine problems reported.

The Ford Escape is a smaller SUV available in the same price range. The Ford Escape has more responsive steering on small streets, while the Dodge Journey has a more comfortable cabin for passengers. We recommend the Ford Escape since it’s more up-to-date, although both are worth testing to see which best fits your needs.

Dodge journey review very positive.
Very affordable and first my current needs. Great gas mileage around town and I have taken on a few long trips with an enjoyable driving experience. Heated seats and remote start are a great feature with Pennsylvania winters. When back seat is down I can do major shopping easily. There is a third row that I never use for passenger but when I do have a passenger it is great to store their personal items. My dodge dealer has been excellent when it comes to service. I have all the perks of a large SUV bundled in this vehicle.

It does not take off as quickly as I would like it too but other than that the SUV runs very smooth and is comfortable and is reasonable on gas also. It has a 3rd row seat which is great for when my kids have a friend coming along with us. Or when you put the 3rd row seat down there is a bunch of room for groceries.

2019 dodge just a regular car.
Takes forever to warm 3rd row, 3 row should be able to open windows, not much room, no handles above passenger side window, interior isn't kid friendly, passenger side foot room is limited, GPS should be included, not much special features for 2019 car kind of pricey.

The 2019 dodge journey is a fantastic vehicle.
The 2019 dodge journey truly is an amazing vehicle. Me and my finance have 6 kids and we are able to fit our entire family in the vehicle comfortably. There have been no major issues to arise so far and the vehicle has not gave out or have any major issues. The interior is a black leather and the floor compartments come in handy for long road trips and local trips. The v6 engine purrs beautifully every time we start it and the transmission always shifts smoothly. The maintenance on the vehicle is straightforward and easy to keep up with granted you pay attention and maintain it. The tires are smooth on all surfaces and rarely deflate. My family of 8 fit perfectly into the vehicle and will for years to come. Dodge is my main go to vehicle manufacturer and continues. The only issue that has arisen is the Bluetooth having trouble connecting from time to time but other than that the vehicle is absolutely perfect.

I love this car. I recently purchased this car because we travel across states once a month and have 5 children. The gas mileage is amazing! We have saved over half of what we would normally spend on gas. The only problem I have with the vehicle is there is not a lot of legroom for the very back seats, and it is hard to get kids in and out of the far back all while having car seats in the middle seats. Other than that, it is fun to drive. The kids also love watching videos in the car, and the sound is great.

It is okay on gas so far. Not the best but better than most.
Having too many technology issues and I haven’t had it a year at the time. The touchscreen radio was glitching, the car would jerk when switching gears. For it to be a brand new car it does not ride the smoothest. I would def not go back to dodge or Chrysler at that.

Would rate it 9 out of 10.
I love my car. It is very roomy. It is comfortable to ride and drive. It gets good gas mileage. It has third row seating. Seats lay down and make hauling stuff easy. It has everything I want except Bluetooth. I love the Sirius radio. It makes traveling fun.

Dodge journey pros and cons.
My journey does not have much trunk space! When in the third row seating you have very little room for your feet! Wish it had a trunk button to open the trunk! I do love the look of mine! It has black rims and looks very sporty! The red and tinted windows make it stand out!

The awesomeness of my four wheels!
I really do love my dodge journey the space is great for kids who fight. I also love the storage compartment on the floor to put things in. The gas mileage is great too for such a spacious car. It's a smooth ride for travel! The screen for the backing up camera is big clear and makes it easy to spot anything in your way!

Keyless entry and keyless start is amazing!
I love the 3rd row seating, and that the seats all lay flat. Power buttons for everything is helpful. Only issue I have had is there is no trunk button from the driver's seat, so you have to get out and open back hatch for people when doing grocery pickup.

Great vehicle all around.
Great for our family of 6 great gas mileage too. Seats very comfortable. Had lots of storage areas. Have not had any problems mechanically. It is very reliable I drive everyday to many baseball games to and from work daily. Temp control for front and back seats.

Red is a beautiful color, the paint on my car has very light sparkles,
I love my car. It handles and drives very smoothly on the road. It has lots of room in the front as well as in the back. It is very good on gas. I feel very safe in my vehicle. Overall it is a beautiful car inside and out. Air conditioner and heater work incredibly good, you can leave the temperature dial on low and it gives out enough heat and cold air.

My short 2019 dodge journey.
My 2019 dodge journey is a great car. It has three row seats, you and let the third row down to create more trunk space. It has a backup camera. On the downside it is a gas guzzler, it does not have the remote start, there is no heated seats, and the uconnect has a lot of problems. I probably wouldn't get this car again but I do love it if that makes since.

Style and performance in a cute package!
It drives amazing! The brakes are excellent! The air and heat in the front and rear make such a huge difference. The package I got came with some updated rims, they make the vehicle look way better. It gets good gas mileage when you do not stay in the gas pedal.

Plus and minuses that are in the SUV.
The seats are hard to work the are hard to fold down. But the air system works good. I don't really know what else to say about it the seats are also hard to clean because of the matter that is on top of the leather, the radio systems sounds good and easy to use.

Could never ask for a better first car.
I love this car from the inside out. It is great on gas. Ac never fails always cold even if it's set to 1. Back up camera was a nice upgrade. An don't get me started on the auto dimming rear-view mirror. Love it. Best first car anyone could ask to own.

All in all great vehicle aside from a few features.
I don't have much complaint. It does not get very good gas mileage and for it being a 2019 I would think Bluetooth would be a standard thing in vehicles but it does not have Bluetooth. But you can connect your phone in via USB. It is a smooth ride, it is very comfortable and can turn very nice to get you out of tight situations. The back up cam is nice but if it is night time with no lights you cannot see out of it. Otherwise seats fold down very easily and it's spacious if the 3rd row is down but limited with the 3rd row seats up. It works very well for my little family.

Overall it is a good car. Lots of room just need some improvements.
Gas goes by fast. Not too hands on when using your phone. Bluetooth is hard to connect. Lots of room. Backup camera is great and the alerts. There are a lot of outlets to plug and charge your devices. Once again if your phone is connected to Bluetooth and listen to music and you try to charge your phone your music will not play.

Dependable & efficient! Couldn’t be happier!
This is the first new car I have bought, had barely any mileage when I drove it off the lot. It is very dependable with great gas mileage and I know it is going to last me for years to come, unlike my previous vehicles. The only complaint I have ever had, really about any vehicle, is I wish the seats had better back support. Instead of pushing the head and shoulders forward and cupping the back, I'd prefer if my mid- or lower back was pushed forward a little bit, promoting better posture and making it so I do not cramp up as much during longer drives. Right now I have to use a pillow to achieve that.

2019 dodge journey gets the job done!
I love my SUV. The journey rides good. The seats are comfortable and I enjoy driving the vehicle. I have a 3rd row seat and there is little room for cargo but it holds our family. I like the dashboard which tells you how your vehicle is doing and gives you messages when to get maintenance.

It is a great car for a family with great features.
There are some problems with radio parts but that is it. The performance is great it makes you feel good and brand new. The seats of comfy there's lots of space, the heater and air conditioner work great. I love having all the windows having the ability to open, I love having a lot of room//leg space, and the DVD player is my favorite feature.
