2020 Jeep Compass Review: Comfortable Small SUV With Improved Reliability From Earlier Years

Alex Showalter
Feb 25, 2023

The 2020 Jeep Compass lasts around 200,000 miles with some engine stalling and stereo system issues reported. At $18,200 to $22,600, it’s a fair value for a compact SUV, but it’s risky to own one out of warranty with high ownership costs.

likeFilled The Good
The stereo technology is great, seating is good for such a small SUV and off-road performance is good.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The engine is weaker than other small SUVs, there’s not a ton of cargo space and the transmission is slow to change gears.

Is the 2020 Jeep Compass a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 7/10 – 2020 is a fine year for the Jeep Compass, although it doesn’t stack up well compared to some more advanced compact SUVs on the market. Owner reviews praise the efficient engine, legroom, along with the entertainment technology.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 7/10 – Interior materials are okay for a compact SUV, the seats are comfortable on long drives, although cargo space is lower than average.
  • Reliability 7/10 – There are no serious issues reported on the 2020 Compass. Avoid models from 20172018 which have a lot of engine failures. Models from 20192022 are more dependable choices.
  • Performance 6/10 – Performance is worse than other small SUVs from the four-cylinder engine, which is more focused on efficiency rather than power.
  • Safety 7/10 – The 2020 Compass is reasonably safe, earning 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests. There’s a standard rearview camera. Optional upgrades include lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, along with automatic emergency braking.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is good at up to 26 MPG giving 351 miles of range from the 13.5 gallon tank. Gas costs are $20 cheaper than average at $166 per month.
  • Value 7/10 – The 2020 Jeep Compass is less expensive than a lot of competitors, although rapid depreciation gives it a lower overall value score.

Best car of 2021: very smooth and luxurious ride at an affordable cost.
I really like the comfort of the car. I purchased the black out package with black rims and tires. Very clean look. The interior is everything I could ask for. Very smooth drive, keyless start. The cruise control works very smoothly as well. I would highly suggest buying a new jeep compass.

Beautiful green angel of mine.
I love the moon rough and the amount of leg room available. A lot of space on the trunk, especially with the seats down, I love the surround sound and ac works really well. GPS gets me lost and there's not enough space for my belongings but other than that it is perfect! I love my 6 speed green angel.

White jeep compass. Very roomie!
I love my car! I am in college, and my friends find it very sleek. It is able to hold as many people as I need it to driving around with my friends. It has plenty of storage and room unlike my previous car! It is very safe but also fun! I really do enjoy it and would recommend it to anyone I talked to.

Jeep lives up to its name.
The level of technology and consumer safety features are outstanding. While still very new, I expect the handling of all sorts of weather conditions will meet or exceed what jeep is known for. No problems noted about it so far. The comfort of the interior is quite luxurious and easily controlled with state of the art systems integrated in a very user friendly touchscreen.

Information on purchasing or leasing a jeep, especially around the Midwest.
It is just the right size it is very reliable and it is very comfortable it is as clean lines and a smooth drive I love it I never have any problems with it. The air works good, the heat works good, drives beautifully, and it looks beautiful I have had many different cars in my lifetime but this one I do believe it is the best but I am driving.

s**y, sleek, and indestructible.
The technology and trim package is luxurious and sleek. Not to forget that the seats are ridiculously comfortable. I even feel cool driving the car. This is our 3rd jeep because they are extremely reliable and sturdy. However, the seatbelt buckles in the back are way too bulky and hard to maneuver.

I love the touch screen in my car.
I do not have any problems with my jeep. It runs very smoothly and everyone that always sits in my car loves it and says it does not even feel like you are driving a car. The only downfall I can say is that the gas is not that good but I knew going into buying a jeep that the gas is not that good for jeep. If I could go back and pick another kind of car I wouldn't because I love my jeep that much.

Everything!! This vehicle will surely make you smile and turn heads.
I have only 1500 miles on the vehicle, but have not had any issues. The vehicle is beautiful inside and out. I have many features I love. Heated steering wheel and seats, ventilated seats, the moon roof is so cool. The interior looks so great with black leather and red stitching. Love all the 4wd modes and back up camera too. Can't go wrong with premium alpine sound system and mopar rock rails either. Not to mention the apple car play is awesome... So so much to love.

My new 2020 uses oil a lot of oil would not give it a good review have to travel with a funnel and a oil can not good

Slow vehicle with not much power.
Engine is not powerful at all. Poor acceleration and often seems to lag when you hit the gas. Poor turn radius for a smaller vehicle. No sunglasses holder and not much space to set things like keys or a phone. Trunk space smaller than expected. Auto shut off cannot be turned off and causes vehicle to lag.

Nice looking and does really good in gas but the hardware is not good.
The radio is messed up and they cannot fully fix it. They have tried fixing it 3 times and it has not worked once. Now I have been waiting 2 months to get it fixed again and now they are taking so long to get back to me. I want a new car now cause of this stuff I been through cause if this car.

Jeep compass for parents with babies.
I love the power train and handling of the vehicle as well as the hands free calling and radio controls. I do not like the seat heads and how high they are as a short individual and how short the backseat is with a car seat. The hatch in back could also be deeper. The backup camera is very convenient and helpful.

2020 jeep compass sport SUV.
It is slow, but dependable. Gets great gas mileage compared to my last car. It also has a lot of room inside surprisingly. I have had zero issues with the car so far and I have had it for about 8 months. Overall recommend for a relatively low budget new car.
accountCircle Stephen B
It is a good SUV for a small family.
Trunk is small. Good gas mileage. Like the two tone with red and black. Wish it had on board navigation versus having to use my phone app and the uplay with the cable. Comfort on the driver sit. If the trunk was bigger it would be better. Kinda nervous about not having anything to secure the gas tank though, anyone could put something down it if they wanted to.

2020 jeep compass, sport compact vehicle.
It is not very good on gas. Inside the vehicle is small, not much room so I wouldn't recommend if you have teens you drive around. The truck is decent size. The vehicle itself is compact so good for city parking. I think it would be perfect for a college student.

Great car, decent features, not terrible gas mileage.
It's good, jeep does not pass emissions tests so they added the feature that allows your car to turn off when you come to a complete stop which is a bit hard to get used to. Overall it's a great car, not great on gas but not terrible. Good features in the care as well.

What Do Critics Say About the Jeep Compass?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2020 Jeep Compass lags behind some of the other compact SUVs on the market, with average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Compass at 3.4/5, praising the roomy interior for a small SUV, but doesn’t like the slow nine-speed transmission.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the 2020 Compass a 3.7/5, enjoying the affordable ownership costs as it ages, but owners don’t like the rapid depreciation.

What Common Problems Does the 2020 Jeep Compass Have?

Common problems found on the 2020 Jeep Compass include the engine shutting off while driving, the stereo system freezing up, along with water getting into the cabin when it rains. Overall, these problems are a bit worse than other compact SUVs from the same years, although repair costs are not very high.

The engine shutting off while driving is the most widespread complaint from 2020 Compass owners in the first 10,000 miles. Usually the engine shutting off is caused by a computer issue. There are some software updates which improve the reliability and are usually installed for free by dealerships. There are also some reports of damaged O2 sensors, which are also covered under warranty. Out of warranty, they’re around $250 to replace.

The stereo system freezing up is another issue reported by Compass owners at around 2,000 miles. There are stereo system software updates available as well, which improve its reliability. Most dealerships will install updates for free, while some charge around $50.

Water getting into the cabin when it rains has also shown up on some Compass models with a sunroof. The drain line from the sunroof to the ground gets clogged or loose in some cases. Cleaning out the line and re-attaching it costs around $100, depending on local labor rates.

There is one recall on the 2020 Jeep Compass, which is better than some other compact SUVs. The recall covers the windshield wipers, which may not function properly due to a loose bolt. Jeep will replace the parts on affected models for free.

How Long Will the 2020 Jeep Compass Last?

A well-maintained 2020 Jeep Compass can last around 200,000 miles, which is around 100,000 miles less than the long-lasting Toyota RAV4. Regular annual maintenance costs are higher than some other small SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $503 per year.

As a used 2020 Jeep Compass reaches 100,000 miles owners should be prepared to replace the intake manifold gasket for $450, hood latch costing $130, along with the transmission oil cooler assembly which costs around $600.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is very good for a compact SUV offering a standard 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality. Optional upgrades include a larger 8.4-inch touchscreen, along with a more powerful stereo system.

Standard safety technology is lacking behind the competition, only offering a rearview camera.

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Automatic high-beam headlights
  • Lane departure warning
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Forward collision warning
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Lane keep assist
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Rear parking sensors

Is the 2020 Jeep Compass a Good Value?

Yes, the 2020 Jeep Compass is a decent value since it’s cheaper than many other compact SUVs on the market. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $18,200 to $22,600, making it less than a Honda CR-V or Subaru Forester. When new, the price range was $22,280 to $30,130. Depreciation is worse than some competitors, losing around 12% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Jeep Compass?

Performance is slow, taking 9.1 seconds to go from 0-60 MPH.

What Colors Does the Jeep Compass Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Jeep Compass?

The 2020 Jeep Compass is a comfortable compact SUV that offers a spacious cabin and supportive seats. The front seats are well-padded and provide good support for long drives, with the option of an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and available heated front seats for added comfort.

The interior of the Compass is spacious, providing ample headroom and legroom for front and rear passengers, as well as a 60/40 split-folding rear seat design for added versatility. The Compass also offers a smooth and comfortable ride, thanks to its well-tuned suspension and available all-wheel-drive system. Additionally, the vehicle has been engineered to minimize road and wind noise, making the cabin a quiet and relaxing environment on the road.

How Much Storage Space Does the Jeep Compass Have?

The 2020 Jeep Compass has ample storage space to meet the needs of most drivers. With the rear seats in place, the Compass has 27.2 cubic feet of cargo space, which is enough to store a lot of items such as several suitcases, a set of golf clubs, or a stroller. When the rear seats are folded down, the cargo area expands to 59.8 cubic feet, providing ample space for larger items such as furniture or sports equipment.

In addition to the cargo area, the Compass also has several other storage compartments throughout the cabin. The front doors have pockets that can hold drinks or other small items, and the rear doors have pockets that are perfect for storing maps or other items you may need to access quickly. The center console has a sliding armrest that opens to reveal a deep storage area that can hold a lot of items, including a laptop or purse.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The second generation of the Jeep Compass came out for the 2017 model year.

2015: Altitude & High Altitude models have all-wheel drive available.

2016: Bluetooth & satellite radio standard on Sport model, Limited model discontinued.

2017: Fully redesigned for the second generation with new technology, engines, and styling.

2018: No changes from earlier years.

2019: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on all models.

2020: Small options changes throughout the lineup.

2021: More standard driver safety features, manual transmission discontinued.

How Does the Jeep Compass Compare to the Competition?

The 2020 Jeep Compass is a decent compact SUV for shoppers looking for a nice cabin at an affordable purchase price.

The Jeep Cherokee is another small SUV offered by Jeep which costs around $3,500 more. Passenger room is better in the Jeep Cherokee, while the Jeep Compass fits better in large cities where parking is at a premium. We recommend the Jeep Cherokee since you get more features and better reliability for your money.

The Subaru Outback is a wagon which is available for roughly $7,000 more. Standard safety technology is much more advanced in the Subaru Outback, while the Jeep Compass has more responsive steering. We recommend the Subaru Outback since it’s a more reliable choice long term.

Third gear hard thump
This has been a great vehicle except since day one it hit hard when going into 3rd gear. If I’m driving and take my roof of the gas pedal around 30 mph it jerks and makes a loud thump. Does anyone else have this issue? Should I be concerned?
accountCircle Greg F on June 25, 2021
Solid and well built jeep.
The vehicle is very reliable. I have not had any issues with the vehicle in the year that I have had it. Only need routine oil changes and a nail in a tire needed to be fixed. It performs well in the snow and gets great gas mileage. I feel safe in the vehicle. One downside is the 4-cylinder engine is a little weak and does not have much giddy up but that does come with better gas mileage so it is a bit of a catch-22.
accountCircle Javier G on June 25, 2021
No complaints necessary.
I have never had any problems with the car, performance-wise. It gets me to where I need to go. Only “issue” that I have, is that the car is a little more compact than what I am used to. I am a larger fellow, so I do feel a little cramped at times. But other than that I have no complaints. Gas mileage is great.

It is very comfortable to drive. The seat goes up high enough for me and I still can touch the pedals. I love the auto temp features. I also like the auto start. And the alarms if things go wrong like the tire pressure. The heated windshield wipers is awesome.

Completely love the compass, minus the chips.
The compass is very comfortable, has enough room to transport me and friends. The apple CarPlay system is easy to use and convenient. My only issue is that the paint chips so easily. There are already several very small dings from small gravel on the highway.

Heated steering wheel is a game changer.
I love the heated seats and heated steering wheel. The multiple options for lumbar support on the driver's seat is great. I love the sound system the car comes with. It speeds up very fast and I love that it has CarPlay. It is a very quiet car and I love the blind spot lights.

Overall good, jeep finally innovating.
It is a very sleek model, with lots of technological updates for jeep such as heated seats, Bluetooth, and so on, with the inherent benefit of owning a jeep like the 4 wheel drive and decent gas mileage for its size. The auto turn off at red lights though is pretty anxiety inducing so I would recommend turning that feature off. Otherwise no complaints.

2020 jeep compass review!
It is a very smooth ride, good space for a smaller SUV. The gas economy is fairly good as well. I recently went on a trip to New York from Michigan, and had plenty of space and comfort throughout. I am also a fan of the heated seats and steering wheel as winters can be cold, this feature also starts with the automatic start feature which additionally is nice in the winter.

Excellent heated seats and steering wheel.
Great vehicle. I had a couple blips with the computer system, but overall an excellent car. Great in snow, in rain and in the summer heat. Great size, not too big but can still pack it with things. Great gas mileage. The interior stays clean easily, and it is easy to parallel park.

The panoramic sunroof takes it to the next level.
My compass is everything I want in a car. This is my second compass lease the first I also loved but was missing my sunroof, this time I got one and it is panoramic! I love the heated and cooling seat feature and heated wheel. The one downfall is there is no CD player - I know most everything is digital now but I would love to be able to play my mixed CDs I made in college to reminisce on the way to my adult job. This is my only dislike, everything else the way it drives, the look, the interior, the space - all of it I love!

It has small “easter eggs” which can be found all over the vehicle.
Does not accelerate as quickly as I would like but does seem to not use as much gas as my previous compass. It does not have a sunroof, which I wanted. It also is not pure white. It is more of an eggshell color. Overall, it is a good and safe vehicle.

I have no complaints about the 2020 jeep compass yet. I have had it for 6 months and have had no issues. Only reason it is 4 and not 5 is because I haven't driven in enough conditions to know how it performs in colder conditions, uphill, dirt roads, etc.

The jeep compass is a fantastic and trustworthy vehicle to have in any condition. It is not a very powerful car, but there are various modes like snow, mud, sand, and normal 4-wheel drive that is useful for me to drive in bad conditions in the northeast of the country. Also the inside of the vehicle is spacious for the passengers and many features such as heated seats and heated steering wheel helps during the bad winters.

2020 jeep compass. Reliable and stylish.
This is a high class vehicle, these cars are very popular and are going very quick off of the lot. These cars are good for just about anything, these cars have space, these cars have 4 wheel drive to get you through harsh winters or other driving conditions. The 2020 jeep compass is also really good on gas mileage. The inside of this vehicle has all of the bells and whistles that you need. For example it has heated seats, touch screen radio, power front seat, heated steering wheel which is amazing in the winter. Most versions have the nine-speed automatic, which is neither smooth nor responsive. Handling is not agile, though the jeep is secure when pushed. The ride is rather stiff and jittery. The rear seat is too low and flat. The optional 8.4-inch uconnect infotainment system is excellent. Available safety features include forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and blind spot warning. This is a top of the line compact safe car. Is it also very stylish, style comes naturally to the 2020 jeep compass. From a sleek available black roof, to the available premium high-intensity discharge headlamps, right down to the attractive and capable wheel options available in a variety of styles and finishes, compass is refined and ready to impress. It is what’s inside that counts. The 2020 jeep compass offers comfortable and contemporary interior styling complete with a new available alpine® premium audio system, abundant cargo options, and roomy, configurable seating that keeps up with your lifestyle.

I had a 2012 jeep compass before upgrading to a 2020 jeep compass. I really love this jeep! It is spacious and has a lot of room, it is pretty quiet compared to most jeeps. It is better on gas than previous jeeps I have had. I love the heated seats and steering wheel! Has a lot of different settings so you can set it up the way you prefer. The only thing I do not like is the touch screen settings for heat and air, a dial would be quick in changing from ac to heat.

Great car. Drives nice and smooth. A/c is a little loud but works perfectly so do the heaters. Love the moon roof. The car is missing a few things that I would like for example a sunglasses cubby and button to open the trunk but other than that it is a great car. I love all the safety features, I feel safe and secure in my car. The trunk is very spacious. I feel like all the features on the car are nice like when it tells you if something is wrong with the car or like if you need maintenance. The car also connects to my phone which is very helpful when I am trying to make hands free calls and text messages. It also reads my texts to me.

Color, wheels, seats, body shape, room, classic look.
Everything is amazing about my jeep. High perfume and great miles. Going off the road adventures is a great car for this. The downfall of it is the shifting and parts for it. Overall, I am glad I made this purchase and hope I can continue to do more adventures with my jeep.

Great SUV for the price with lots of cool features.
I have only owned the car for five months so no issues so far. Performance is good. Could use a little more horsepower. Comfort is great for a smaller SUV. Wish there was a sunroof and power seats. Overall it is great for space and off road travel for a smaller sized SUV.

Jeep worth buying for the dollar.
This is a nice vehicle. Great performance and good mileage per gallon. Vehicle has done nice safety features that include blind spot warning. I love the rain sensing windshield wipers. In addition, this vehicle has a nice sound system. I wood rate this car between 4 and 5 stars overall.

The jeep compass is worth it.
The jeep compass is a really good car. It has great mileage to where one tank of gas will bring you a long way. I'd recommend driving it too because the interior is real nice. Also, the music is pretty easy to work so I can drive and change the music fast at the same time.

Amazing car! Amazing in snow!
I absolutely love my compass. It is the best purchase! It is a great car, I love how big it is and it is so smooth! It is also amazing during the winter! It is currently snowing and it is such a smooth ride. There are different modes you can put it in (snow, sport, altitude) 100% worth it!

So far I didn't encounter any problems on my vehicle. The performance was smooth and great. This vehicle is very reliable when it comes to snowy conditions. The comfort was extraordinary. It has alarm, cruise control, anti-theft system, keyless start, power liftgate, adjustable steering wheel, leather wrapped steering wheel, intermittent wipers, power door locks, heated mirror, passenger vanity mirror, fog lamps, adaptive cruise control, rear parking aid, hid headlights, remote engine start, heated steering wheel, remote trunk release, rear sensing wipers, electrochromic rearview mirror, driver illuminated vanity mirror, passenger illuminated visor mirror, and power mirrors.

Great sunroof, needs to be bigger though.
The car is a bit small in the front with little to no consul space and the pick up driving is also very slow. It kicks back a bit when driving. It also is very noisy when running. I do however like the all the features especially the panoramic sunroof.

Small, stylish SUV- jeep compass.
I have had my jeep compass for almost 1 year and love it. I have had no issues as I wouldn't expect any only being 1 year old. It has very comfortable seats front and back. I love my heated seats and sunroof! It's great for city driving and gets good gas mileage for long road trips. I am very happy with this vehicle.

The jeep compass Trailhawk is every you could want from a midsize SUV.
Our jeep compass is very comfortable to drive and also to ride in as a passenger even on long trips. We love the backup camera display right in the center of the dash. We also love the easy select four wheel drive options dial located on the center column between the seats. The jeep has plenty of legroom and a very spacious rear storage area. Our jeep is the 4 cylinder and has plenty of get up and go for passing other vehicles. The entertainment and informational center is well equipped for a very enjoyable experience.

The jeep compass is an amazing car that is easy to drive.
The jeep compass is a very great car, especially for drivers who are more inexperienced in driving. The seats and steering wheel offers heating for when you are cold in the winter. The car has a very smooth drive and is surprisingly quiet. As you stop completely the car engine shuts off to save power.

2020 jeep compass altitude.
The car overall is great! It's the perfect size and very smooth to drive. The backup camera is the best part and comes in very handy. I love the look of the car on the exterior especially the two-tone color the car come in. The only downside is that recently a recall was made for the windshield wipers of this car because they do not wipe well.

2020 jeep compass opinion.
The inside is very comfortable and spacious. Plenty of space in the cargo hold. I am not sure if it is my car specifically, but the engine does run a little louder than I care for. I am still trying to figure out how to turn off the auto ignition turn off. This is not an option I like. The car drives well otherwise and is reasonable on gas mileage.

Pros outweigh the cons. It's an inconvenience to have the radio replaced.
I like that its new and has a lot of options. It has a moon roof that I love. It's easy to connect to Bluetooth when I am driving and easy to use the zoom app. The zoom app is something I use daily. I like that I can listen to saved Pandora stations. The cons are that it does not have a lot of power. I am also unhappy with the fact that only after 6 months I am having to get my radio replaced because my air conditioner is connected through it and my air conditioning has stopped working.

2020 white jeep compass review.
This car is amazing. I used to have a jeep liberty and was nervous switching to a smaller one since the liberty is no longer made. I absolutely love it. The ride is always smooth and looks like a high quality car. The trunk is spacious along with the back seat. More so than my old liberty.
