2017 Jeep Compass Review: Unreliable Small SUV With Expensive Ownership Costs

Alex Showalter
Jun 27, 2023

The 2017 Jeep Compass lasts around 150,000 miles with some serious engine and starter issues reported. At $11,850 to $17,500, it’s cheap, but not worth the money when you’ll spend thousands to keep it running as it ages.

likeFilled The Good
The rear seats have plenty of room for adults, the four-wheel drive system works well off-road and there’s a decent amount of cargo space.
dislikeFilled The Bad
Acceleration is weak from the four-cylinder engine, reliability ratings are bad as it ages and it’s not the most comfortable to drive.

Is the 2017 Jeep Compass a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 6/10 – 2017 is a bad year for the Jeep Compass, which is an overall mediocre SUV with mechanical problems. Owner reviews complain about engine problems, trouble starting, along with poor performance in the snow.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 6/10 – Interior materials are decent for an SUV in its price range, the seats are not very comfortable, cargo space is good for its size.
  • Reliability 6/10 – There are a lot of engine and electrical problems reported on the 2017 Compass. Avoid models from 20142018, while 20192022 offer some improvements.
  • Performance 6/10 – Performance is poor from the relatively weak four-cylinder engine, making it one of the slower compact SUVs on the market.
  • Safety 7/10 – The 2017 Compass is reasonably safe, earning 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests. It comes standard with a rearview camera, while steering assist along with forward collision warning are available as optional upgrades.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is okay at up to 27 MPG, giving 365 miles of range from the 13.5 gallon tank. Gas costs are $32 higher than average, at $241 per month.
  • Value 6/10 – The 2017 Jeep Compass is cheaper than many competitors, but expensive ownership costs paired with rapid depreciation make it a bad value for shoppers.

Jeep compass Trailhawk def recommend.
I haven't had any issues with my vehicle since purchasing it. The jeep compass is reliable, smooth, and comfortable. One of my favorite features is the lumbar support in the seats. It really helps my back and posture on long trips. I also love the big media screen. Plus it is great in the snow and hazardous weather conditions!
accountCircle Erik R
The most important thing that others should know about my car is that it is a 4x4 SUV.
I like everything about it, primarily that it sits higher and has 4 wheel drive. I also like the fact that it is a 4 cylinder because of how far I have to drive to work every day. My only complaint is that it didn't come with a sun/moonroof.

It is really a good car it is reliable and runs good I never had a issue with the jeep and I had for 2 years it runs smooth and easy going my seats heat up when I am backing up I see I like the radio system it is good spacing my battery is still good tires still good.

It is a comfortable, with great and convenient standard features.
The new version of the Jeep Compass is amazing. I had the old version and this one runs a lot smoother than the 2016 and previous years. Many features like Bluetooth and backup camera are standard; which is great. The interior is very comfortable and spacious. Also, the interior design makes it all come together and it looks a lot like the grand Cherokee. The exterior look also resembles the grand Cherokee (just a smaller version). Overall, it is a great vehicle.

Great ride and lots of extras. It has the best 4 wheel drive system i have ever had
All good really like it. I enjoy the ride and love all the extras. Could be quieter. Coul get better mileage as described

I love my vehicle! It is great on gas, has a nice sized trunk and is very versatile. Small enough to park and big enough to seat five.

Awesome ride for anyone who likes to travel.
It is reliable and gets us going to where we need to go. It has good gas mileage and has a good amount of space for our belongings we take on long trips. It is an excellent car to have. It is also very comfortable. I would recommend this automobile to anyone who likes the outdoors.

BURNS OIL
I was just informed yesterday that my Jeep Compass is burning oil. I go online and see that the 2017-2019 allhave major problems concerning burning oil. The problems that are occuring is very dangerous and someone is going to die becasue of this. Jeep needs to do a recall and fix this problem.

Look elsewhere for a vehicle. Cheap car for big prize.
Windows fog up randomly while driving. Very dangerous. Also car has problems starting up when you turn key. Happened around 3 times it took 7 mins to start. Cheap plastic pieces on seat toward bottom broke off. Radio stopped working so they put another $1000 radio in and then it started messing up again. Cheap car with a big price tag.

Problems .. Oil burning.. Stalling
I have 28k miles. It burns oil. The car stalls ..studders.. Randomly. Decides to disable and shut off when u turn after a stop sign or when in just driving. I have a clunking noise when I turn in a parking lot coming from front end. 2nd battery died and car had to be towed to dealer.. In the mercy of dealership. Need 4 new tires! Even with tire rotations. The VW was the worst lease and this is the second.

Those patriotic Americans who still think that Jeep, Dodge etc. Are american car manufacturer, they are wrong. Their money is going to Italy because Italian car manufacturer Fiat bought the Jeep, Chrysler and Dodge many years ago. These cars are not made good anymore. They put the cheapest materials and set up in these cars and SUVs. I bought a brand new 2017 Jeep Compass and I never owned a less reliable car in my life. It started making grinding noise after 2000 miles and had 5 different electrical issue all safety issues such as electronic brake, traction control etc. Service could never fix the grinding noise coming from rear end. Nothing But Problems
Love the look of my Jeep Compass Trailhawk but it has been nothing but problems. The car currently has 18,000 miles and has been in the shop multiple times first for the back-up camera not working, then for problems with the electrical system and batter replacement and now the GPS shows a locations miles away from the actual car location. Not sure how they can sell any of these cars with the problems they have.
accountCircle Kamryn W
It has CarPlay which I love! The navigation works well.
It gets decent gas mileage but the gas tank is small so I fill up more often. It is a six cylinder but can hardly accelerate quickly and goes up high with rpm. It is quite durable and drives well in harsh weather conditions. I love the luxury interior and the beats stereo system.

What Do Critics Say About the Jeep Compass?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2017 Jeep Compass comes up short compared to other small SUVs on the market, with low owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds rates the Compass at 3.3/5, enjoying the decent off-road capabilities, but doesn’t like the rough suspension.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Compass a 3.5/5 praising the roomy cabin for a small SUV, but owners don’t like the weak engine.

What Common Problems Does the 2017 Jeep Compass Have?

Common problems found on the 2017 Jeep Compass include the vehicle stalling while driving, the engine not starting, along with fuel spilling out while filling. Overall, these problems are much worse than other small SUVs on the market, leading to more expensive ownership costs as the Compass ages.

The vehicle stalling while driving is the most widespread complaint from 2017 Compass owners at around 40,000 miles. There are a lot of reasons the engine may stall, but the most common source is from low oil pressure. Usually it indicates a problem with either the oil levels, or the head of the engine. If your oil is full, then you may need to rebuild the upper half of the engine, costing over $2,000.

The engine not starting has also been reported by some 2017 Compass owners at around 30,000 miles. Usually, the problem is caused by a starter motor failure which prevents the engine from turning over. Replacing the starter costs around $550, depending on local labor rates.

Fuel spilling out while filling up is another problem mentioned by 2017 Compass owners in the first 45,000 miles. The charcoal canister is known to get clogged, which leads to the tank being overfilled, and leaking out the filler tub. Replacing the canister costs around $200, and usually fixes the problem if there’s no other damage to the fuel filling tube.

There are four recalls on the 2017 Jeep Compass, which is similar to some other small SUVs. The most serious recall covers the half shaft, which may disengage, leading to the vehicle rolling away. Jeep will replace the engagement on affected models for free. Other recalls cover the fire extinguisher along with the instrument brightness gauge not working.

How Long Will the 2017 Jeep Compass Last?

A well-maintained 2017 Jeep Compass may last around 150,000 miles, which is only half as long as some competitors, like the Toyota RAV4. Regular annual maintenance costs are slightly more expensive than other small SUVs, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $429 per year.

As a used 2017 Jeep Compass reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the transmission mounts for $180, A/C refrigerant lines costing $750, along with the catalytic converter which costs $1,500.

accountCircle Regina M

The only problem I have experienced is the transmission will sometimes slip. I had a previous jeep compass that also had the same issue.

accountCircle Victoria M

Does not have any problems. Runs great. Gas is good. I do not use it for sport so. Not much space in the trunk so we pack very lightly when we go on trips.

accountCircle Tonia C

This is the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned in my life. It shifts into four wheel drive easy peasy when I needed. It is easy to work on even for me. I have had no problems as of this date and even if I do encounter any I will fix them and keep on rolling.

accountCircle Joaquin P

It is very reliable. Enjoy having the vehicle. What I do not enjoy so much is the mpg. But it's ok I deal with it.

accountCircle Matthew L

As indicated, the engine consumes oil at the rate of a quart every week or so, and this is a problem with all of the vehicles of this make and model, not just mine.

accountCircle Kristin D

Not any that I have been able to find. All the features have worked properly, no issues with the engine or transmission, even all the small stuff like the brakes and starter are all still going strong. It drives great in the rain, snow, and ice. It did scare me the first time I stopped at a red light and it shut off, because at the time I had never had a newer vehicle with the gas saving feature, but I like that there is an easily accessible button I can push to shut off that feature when I drive.

accountCircle Chaka F

I have never had any problems with it. It’s always been reliable. As long as routine maintenance is done it runs great. The only thing that I don't like is that it doesn't have automatic running lights when you start the car. You have to turn them on manually.

accountCircle Dane W

My vehicle is very reliable. I have not had any major problems with it. I had a flat tire and was able to use the manual and change it myself to drive to an auto shop and get it repaired safely.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is okay for a small SUV, offering a standard 5-inch touchscreen display. Optional upgrades include a larger 8.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Standard safety technology is fairly basic with a rearview camera.

Optional advanced driver assistance features include:

  • Rear parking sensors
  • Lane departure warning
  • Steering assist
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Forward collision warning
  • Brake assist
  • Hill-descent control

Is the 2017 Jeep Compass a Good Value?

No, the 2017 Jeep Compass is not a good value since it has a lot of mechanical problems compared to other small SUVs. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $11,850 to $17,500, making it less than a Subaru Crosstrek or Nissan Rogue. When new, the price range was $19,940 to $28,995. Depreciation is worse than other SUVs, losing about 15% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Jeep Compass?

There are four models of the 2017 Jeep Compass offered, from the entry-level Sport through to the more off-road focused Trailhawk. The Trailhawk comes standard with front-wheel drive, while all-wheel drive is available as an optional upgrade.

What Engines Come In the Jeep Compass?

A 2.4L Tigershark MultiAir 2 engine powers the 2017 Compass. This four-cylinder engine produces 180 horsepower at up to 27 MPG. It’s paired with a six-speed manual or a six or nine-speed automatic transmission. It can tow up to 2,000 pounds when properly equipped. As for acceleration, the 2017 Compass goes from 0-60 mph in around 9.3 seconds.

What Colors Does the Jeep Compass Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Jeep Compass?

The 2017 Jeep Compass delivers an impressive level of comfort, which is key to its appeal as a compact SUV. It offers seating for up to five people, with ample headroom and legroom in both the front and back rows, even for taller passengers. The seats are well-designed, offering a good mix of support and cushioning that makes long journeys more enjoyable.

The Jeep Compass is also designed with sound insulation in mind, effectively minimizing road noise and providing a quieter, more comfortable ride. It comes with a standard suspension that does a good job of soaking up bumps and potholes, providing a smooth and comfortable ride over most terrains.

The interior of the 2017 Jeep Compass is well-appointed, with quality materials and a stylish design that adds to the overall comfort of the vehicle. The layout of the controls is user-friendly and easy to reach, enhancing driver comfort.

How Much Storage Space Does the Jeep Compass Have?

The 2017 Jeep Compass offers a lot of cargo space that should satisfy most daily needs and accommodate various types of items. Behind the second row of seats, the Jeep Compass provides about 27.2 cubic feet of cargo space. This capacity can comfortably fit your weekly groceries, a couple of medium-sized suitcases for a short trip, or a stroller for those with young kids.

For those needing more storage room, the rear seats fold down to expand the cargo space significantly. With the back seats folded flat, the Jeep Compass opens up to around 59.8 cubic feet of space. This expanded storage allows you to accommodate larger items, such as camping gear, a mountain bike, or even a small piece of furniture.

In addition to this, the Jeep Compass also features various storage compartments and pockets throughout the cabin, perfect for storing smaller items like mobile devices, water bottles, and maps.

VehicleHistory Image

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The second generation of the Jeep Compass was introduced for the 2017 model year.

2015: Navigation available on more models, and the cargo light/flashlight removed.

2016: Limited model removed from the lineup, Bluetooth now standard on the Sport model.

2017: Fully redesigned for the second generation as an all new Compass with new engines, technology, and styling.

2018: No changes from the previous year.

2019: Standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

2020: Small changes to features found in each package.

2021: More driver assistance features on the Limited and Trailhawk models, manual transmission discontinued.

How Does the Jeep Compass Compare to the Competition?

The 2017 Jeep Compass is a bad small SUV since it suffers from a lot of mechanical problems, making it more expensive to own as it ages. We recommend shoppers look elsewhere.

The Jeep Cherokee is a larger SUV offered by Jeep which costs around $3,000 more. Passenger room is better in the Jeep Cherokee, while the Jeep Compass fits better into small parking spots. We recommend avoiding both for the 2017 model year since they have a lot of costly problems.

The Toyota RAV4 is another small SUV which costs around $8,000 more. Long-term reliability ratings are better in the Toyota RAV4, while the Jeep Compass has a slightly better four-wheel drive system. We recommend the Toyota RAV4 since it’s worth the extra money for a much more dependable compact SUV.

It is a good vehicle. Gets me to and from where I need to go. Great looks. Love the sunroof. Great look inside also.

accountCircle Matthew L

It is a decent vehicle, but it has some serious flaws. It requires a quart of oil to be added every week or two, and does not have nearly the power one would expect from a jeep.

accountCircle Kristin D

I love my jeep compass! I have been driving it daily for over a year now and have had no issues. It is a smooth ride, roomy and comfortable interior, and easy to operate (both the features and the vehicle). My kids and I both love all the technology with the touch screen and Bluetooth features, and for a smaller SUV it handles in the snow and ice flawlessly.

accountCircle Dajuan T

Yes! I have enjoyed it because it is very roomy and comfortable. It also handles well when driving. It is low maintenance. The back seats fold down to allow extra room in the hatch portion of the car. It gets very good gas mileage and has a sunroof which is great on a nice day.

This is a really good vehicle for all types of people. It is small enough to get good mileage and is easy to drive but also big enough to sit 5 people comfortably. It is perfect for bringing my 2 dogs for a car ride.

2017 jeep compass - review.
My first jeep was a liberty. A great auto, very peppy and economical and I drove it for 13 years. The compass, at first was not what I expected but it has proven to be a great 'city' car. I have had it 3.5 years and no problems. It has a very smooth drive and has proven to be extremely reliable.

We love the black interior with red trim, and the back-up camera is very handy.
Our jeep compass was exactly what we were looking for--a decently sized SUV with good handling in the winter and a comfortable interior. It does surprisingly well on gas intake, and has a remote start that should come in handy during the winter months.

Great crossover with spacious rear compartment but not driver's seat.
My jeep compass latitude has been a very reliable vehicle. It has 57000 miles on it and still looks brand new. It is nice size for a crossover vehicle. A lot of space in the rear compartment. I keep up with regular maintenance for optimal performance. My only dislike is the driver's seat is not very spacious and the seat does not go back far enough for my large body.

We have a 2017 jeep compass we purchased in 2019 and it has been nothing but issues for us. Before we would have issues where the car would not turn over and say " service electronic parking break" we got that fixed and didn't have issues for a few months, now our car SHUTS OFF while driving. Can't use the steering wheel, brake and gas pedal doesn't work. We were able to turn it over when it happened, once we got home it completely died. It is not a battery issue, probably transmission or electric. Jeep has been 0 help to us.

A lot more room in the very back than expected.
Seats are oddly uncomfortable. The driver's seat has been a cause of many of my recent back and tailbone issues. I had to get a special cushion so I could actually sit. Drives tougher than a Toyota or Honda. The car does well off roads but does not ever feel as smooth as other cars I have ridden in even on the interstate.

It doesn't start at first it needs a least 4/5 times to start it, after starting it get off while it is running, something very dangerous and I been spending more money that I never thought. I appreciate if someone have any idea why this ishappening. Thanks !

That it drives extremely well in rough weather. That is has very up to date features.
I like the navigation. I like the sunroof. I like the trim of the truck and the drive.

Decent car for small family, good price.
Loud engine. Has a 4 wheel drive on/off switch. Change oil sensor is helpful. Good on gas. Very small, but fits myself, my 6 ft 6 in husband and three kids in the back. Backseat folds flat down. Does not accelerate very quickly. Able to fit small items in with spare tire, I.E. Crowbar, small air compressor, and tote bags.

This baby is the absolute best I've ever owned!
I can't say enough good things about it! I love my jeep compass! It gets around like the best in snow. Not too big, not too small. I have room to load up things when I need to. My 3 kids and 60 lb dog fit nicely in here. Very comfortable ride. I don't go on long journeys out of my city much, but when I do, it's a smooth comfortable ride. My next vehicle will absolutely be another jeep!

Great security features and is a very safe car.
The car is very easy to drive. I learned to drive in the car. The car also has many security features like a 2 sensors on the rear view mirrors and the car beeps when you're about to back into something and has a back camera that is very helpful when reverse parking.

Regret so never again. This car is cheap and it is definitely made that way.
Growing number of electrical issues. First it would stop running without notice. Then both the front and front passenger door window panels failed. The car sound odd at times. Even though I have changed the batteries in the keys, the fob does not unlock the car right away.

Over priced. Should go with a KIA. I regret leaving KIA and trying a Jeep
The jeep is great on gas and space but for the price the small about of extras was not worth the price.

We love our jeep compass for traveling and everyday driving!
We love our jeep compass. We have a family of three and all fit comfortably with room for all our gear for traveling or just running errands. The gas mileage we get is awesome and makes driving it less stressful. The leather interior is very easy to clean and take care of. We have always maintained all of our vehicles and I believe that is why we do not have problems and they last a long time. The jeep is very easy to find parts for weather it is cute accessories or new wipers mats etc. We plan on keeping this vehicle for the foreseeable future! I love the features of Bluetooth and having the ability to be hands off while driving. I love the back up camera and being able to fit in smaller places a larger vehicle would not be able to fit.

2017 jeep compass for family.
I have had zero issues with my compass. I wish it had a little more power under the hood. It is great for my family though. Third row seating would be nice. The 4 wheel drive is nice because we get snow in our area. I was pleasantly surprised with the stock spud system that came in it.

It's reliable. Gets you to where you need to go all the time!
I love that it's rugged and reliable. I don't have to worry about getting around in the winter...EVER! The only thing I would say I dislike about it is I would like a third row of seating.

Spacious!! This car has so much room inside of it.The seats fold down to make extra room.
I really enjoy this car. There are a few issues this car has, however. The car is very loud on the outside. Another thing about this car is that when a device is plugged into it, it makes a slight high pitched noise.

It's great on gas and a smooth ride.
My car is great for all seasons. I wish it was a bigger body. That way when I need to move bigger objects it wouldn't take as many trips.

It takes you from one place to another without breaking.
Don't like the auto engine shut off. Like the style. Gas mileage is alright.

A small suv that acts like a big one
I love my vehicle! It is great on gas, has a nice sized trunk and is very versatile. Small enough to park and big enough to seat five.
accountCircle Kaleigh S on March 6, 2021
Very basic jeep. Does the job but without any extras.
Very basic vehicle. No touch screen for dashboard so no backup camera either/ it does have heated seats and 4wd. Drives well in snow/ ice in 4wd: no sunroof. Seats can be folded down for more storage. It's a fine vehicle to drive daily. It is not my favorite look but I have no real issues with it.

Jeep compass is comfortable and affordable.
It is extremely comfortable and has great handling while driving. Nice leather seats along good gas mileage. Very sporty appearance. Great trunk space. Also has a top of the line stereo system. This car is very easy for you to customize the way you want it. Good paint job and good braking system.

Push to start on the key. This is a huge deal living where it snows.
I love my jeep! I previously had a jeep wrangler that I also loved. It was a lot of work and I wanted something with a little more technology and reliability. The jeep compass is a great size and has great gas mileage. I love the heated seats and the push to start feature on the key.

Jeep compass comfortable and reliable.
Comfortable and compact. I would personally prefer a slightly bigger car. The trunk has a lot of space but not so much space in the backseat. The radio is small and not much room in the middle console. The compass rides nice and smooth and is very comfortable. This car has been very reliable to me. In the past 2 1/2 years that I have drove this car I have never had any issues whatsoever. This is the first jeep I have owned and I would definitely buy another.

I find it to be a high quality vehicle, even though it's not considered a luxury car.
I love the way my Compass rides, especially in the winter with 4-wheel drive. I also love the heated seats and steering wheel. It was a little expensive for our budget, but so far, it is worth the cost.
accountCircle Perry G on February 28, 2021
It is a great car that has plenty of space and power.
I love this car! It is a d re exam to drive and gets great gas mileage. It has good clearance fireplaces that are considered off-road, but drives the interstates like a dream! For being a 4-cylinder, the twin turbo engine has plenty of power at no cost of fuel efficiency.
accountCircle Madison S on February 27, 2021
I love the safety feature where the emergency break is automatically engaged.
I have had my jeep for a little over a month now with no issues. The biggest thing I do not really like is the start stop feature. It turns off the car within seconds of being stopped & there is a lag for it starting back up. The only way to shut if off is with a button so you have to remember to do it every time you get in the vehicle. Other than that I love the car, there is enough room for everything and it has great features such as the apple car play & the navigation. I also really enjoy the moonroof.
