2018 Jeep Renegade Review: Unreliable Small SUV With Expensive Ownership Costs

Alex Showalter
Aug 23, 2023

The 2018 Jeep Renegade lasts around 125,000 miles with serious engine and alternator issues. At $14,400 to $22,350, it’s cheaper than many competitors, but not worth the money when you’ll spend thousands repairing all the problems that pop up as it ages.

likeFilled The Good
The four-wheel drive system is great off-road, interior materials are relatively nice and the suspension is smooth.
dislikeFilled The Bad
There’s not a lot of standard safety features, it’s not very fuel efficient and there’s a lot of road noise due to the boxy design.

Is the 2018 Jeep Renegade a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 6/10 – 2018 is a bad year for the Jeep Renegade since there are a lot of mechanical issues reported as it ages. Owner reviews complain about the engine stalling, expensive repair costs, and burning a lot of oil.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 7/10 – Interior materials are better than other small SUVs, the seats are comfortable on long drives, but cargo space is lower than many competitors.
  • Reliability 6/10 – There are widespread transmission and engine problems found on the 2018 Renegade. Avoid models from 20152018, while 20192022 have higher reliability ratings.
  • Performance 6/10 – Performance is worse than other small SUVs from both of the relatively weak four-cylinder engines.
  • Safety 7/10 – The 2018 Renegade is reasonably safe, earning 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests. It comes standard with a rearview camera while automatic emergency braking along with lane keep assist are available as optional upgrades.
  • Gas Mileage 7/10 – Fuel economy is average at up to 27 MPG, giving 342 miles of range out of the 12.7 gallon tank. Gas costs are $13 higher than average, at $203 per month.
  • Value 6/10 – The 2018 Jeep Renegade is less expensive than many other SUVs, but quick depreciation and expensive mechanical problems lower the value score.

Got to love the little things.
I have absolutely loved everything about my Jeep Renegade. It drives amazing and has wonderful gas mileage. My favorite parts of it are the small details though. For instance the orange splat on the rpm odometer or the little Jeep on the Edge of the windshield. It is smaller than most Jeeps but there is still plenty of room!! I like the pumping version of the seat adjuster. Overall I am in love with my Jeep!!

Small but Big vehicle with a lot of room and speed
I have owned a jeep for many years and have never had any issues with any model, I now have a renegade and bought new and one year later have had no issues or problems minus the norm, like tires and windshield wipers replacement from wear and tear. Would recommend this vehicle to anyone that wants to spice up their driving experience.

We Love our jeep renegade
Love the jeep renegade. It is reliable. It gets great gas mileage, performs well in rain and mud. It has plenty of space for my two kids and our dog. It is easy to handle, and does well on rocky terrain. Modes on the dash let you keep track of oil temp, and tire pressure among other things. It has Radio controls on the steering wheel. The cruise control is easy to use

This car model has 23 hidden objects throughout it.
I have yet to see any problems with my car, although it only had 7,000 miles. The seats are comfortable, just wish they laid back a little more. I really like the double trunk compartment. I think it would be better if it had a drink holder in the back. Overall, I love this car.

The size of my vehicle is just right for me.
I brought the car 2 years and no problems... Drives well, good on gas, comfortable and just right for me. My vehicle is very reliable and gets me to a and b without any problems. Overall no major maintenance besides oil change when needed. A lot of times people will ask me about the car and I would highly recommend my vehicle.

It's actu has kick to it even though it's a four cylinder.
Haven't had any problems at all. It's reliable and affordable. May look small on outside but it's very roomy and comfortable inside. It also has six year bumper to bumper warranty and a assist button for when anything comes up unexpectedly.

Nice space and amazing sunroof
It is nice and compact. But enough space for myself and my partner and for taking out our nephews every now and then. There is enough space in the trunk. Love the interior and LOVE the sunroof, almost everyone who sees my car loves it! Drives smooth, have had it half a year and no problems yet

I like the look, the interior, navigation and carplay

2018 jeep renegade, it is comfortable to drive and pretty roomy for a mid size.
The second day of ownership of our jeep we found out it has an oil consumption problem! It uses one quart of oil per 1000 miles! There is no low oil indicator light or anything to let you know the oil is low! It seems to have some transmission issues as well! It will jerk while is going through the lower gears. The only thing I might like is it is comfortable to drive.

Worst Car Ever
Car engine has died twice on the road. Once at 5000 miles and once at 15000 miles. Airbag alert sensor keeps coming on. Bluetooth voice calling works every other day. And keyfob works right next to jeep every other day. I bought the car brand new and wish every day that I had kept my kia soul. Chrysler nor the dealership that I purchased it from has yet to fix any of the issues. And Chrysler said after basic warranty is up the cost falls on me. Advice don't buy a Chrysler product.

2018 Jeep Renegade Lattitude
In March of 2018, my son & I purchased a Renegade for him to use (not realizing it was manufactured in Italy). In June 2018 he was rear-ended and was without his Jeep for over 4 months as we waited for parts, one of which has yet to come (January 2019). In November 2018 he was in another accident and we are currently waiting for parts AGAIN. This is unrealistic to have to wait MONTHS for parts which should be readily available in the UNITED STATES, All we are being told is the parts are on back-ordered and no date has been given for the parts to come in. This is RIDICULOUS to be waiting this long for parts. This vehicle is JUNK.....I DON'T RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE!!!!!!!

Jeep Renegade, don’t buy
I have a 2018 Jeep Renegade limited, I have 1300 miles on it and added 2 quarts of oil already. Took it to dealer and they said that I was reading the dipstick wrong. Been reading dipsticks for over 50 years. I do Not Recommend. They are Junk

Different switch gears rain, mud, snow auto shift change for weather preference.
Comfort will be the first thing on the list. The vehicle is to small for a family of Five. The performance in the winter is very reliable but the car seems to know make a loud sound within 9 months. The gas burns out fast I just think the renegade needs a third row and be much bigger especially if it appears as a family traveling car. That's why I rate it a 2 it's not very comfortable which doesn't make it reliable all year around.

What Do Critics Say About the Jeep Renegade?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2018 Jeep Renegade offers some decent crash-avoidance technology, but gets low owner satisfaction scores as it ages.
  • Edmunds rates the Renegade at 3.6/5 enjoying the technology features, but doesn’t like the limited legroom in the tight rear seats.
  • Kelley Blue Book users give the Renegade a 3.9/5, praising the decent off-road performance for a small SUV, but owners don’t like the poor handling on roads.

What Common Problems Does the 2018 Jeep Renegade Have?

Common problems found on the 2018 Jeep Renegade include excessive oil consumption, the battery overheating, along with the stereo system freezing. Overall, these problems are worse than other small SUVs on the market, leading to more repair costs as the vehicle ages.

Excessive oil consumption is the most widespread complaint on the 2018 Jeep Renegade, showing up within the first 25,000 miles. Some oil consumption is normal, although the Renegade has known piston ring issues that allow a lot of oil into the cylinders. Rebuilding the engine fixes the problem, but costs nearly $1,500. Some people have had their entire engine replaced as well, costing over $3,500.

The battery overheating is another problem mentioned by 2018 Renegade owners at roughly 40,000 miles. An overheating battery can explode, making it a dangerous problem. The alternator is the most common source of the problem. The first thing you should check is the charging cable on the alternator to make sure it’s secure. If it is secure then it’s likely a problem with the actual alternator core, which will have to be replaced for over $500.

The stereo system freezing also shows up on some Renegade models within the first 5,000 miles. There are software updates for the touchscreen which improves the reliability. Most dealerships will install these updates as part of regular service for free, while others charge around $50.

There are two recalls on the 2018 Jeep Renegade, which is similar to other small SUVs from the same year. The first recall is for the voltage regulator which can cause the engine to stall, and the second is for the fuel pump. Jeep will replace the voltage regulator and fuel pump on affected models for free.

How Long Will the 2018 Jeep Renegade Last?

A well-maintained 2018 Jeep Renegade can last around 125,000 miles, which is much shorter than long-lasting SUVs like the Toyota RAV4. Regular annual maintenance costs are higher than many competitors, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $493 per year.

As a used 2018 Renegade reaches around 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the fuel pressure sensor costing $290, intake manifold gasket costing $700, along with the A/C compressor which costs around $1,350.

Yes it is reliable. I have not had any problems other than a nail in a tire. Which tires are not that expensive and every tire place I went to had some and options. It is very dependable. I have gone on long drives and no problems. It also does amazing in the snow.

accountCircle Nichole P

Yes the vehicle is reliable, so far no problems. The only issue I have run across is the gas mileage it is not very good on gas.

accountCircle lisa F

Yes it's very reliable I haven't had any issues so far. The vehicle is way too new for me to have any problems.

accountCircle Dawn H

Very reliable. Has not had any problems to date (knocking on wood). Has a lot of get up and go. Was not the initial one we wanted but that one got hit in the dealership parking lot so we got the upgrade.

accountCircle Michel G

No problems yet. Crossing my fingers it stays that way. Like I said before the only thing I can think of right now that I dislike is the 4 wheel drive button. It is too close to the console and has been bumped numerous times

accountCircle Tristan J

It is very reliable. I have had no problems with it but I only have 3700 miles on it. I can drive in any conditions in it.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is good for a small SUV, offering a standard 5-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth connectivity. Optional upgrades include a larger 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Standard safety technology is similar to many competitors from the same year with a rearview camera.

Optional driver assistance features include:

  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Forward collision warning
  • Active lane keep assist
  • Rear cross traffic alert
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Rear parking sensors

Is the 2018 Jeep Renegade a Good Value?

No, the 2018 Jeep Renegade is a bad value since it has a lot of mechanical problems, making it one that buyers should avoid. The blue book fair purchase price ranges from $14,400 to $22,350, making it less than a Mazda CX-5 or Nissan Rogue. When new, the price range was $18,750 to $27,445. Depreciation is worse than many other small SUVs, losing about 15% of its current value per year.

What Colors Does the Jeep Renegade Come In?

How Comfortable Is the Jeep Renegade?

The comfort level of the 2018 Jeep Renegade can be quite subjective and may vary based on personal preferences and the specific trim level. Generally, the vehicle is designed with a blend of off-road capability and urban driving in mind. The seats are described as supportive and comfortable, accommodating both the driver and passengers on long and short journeys alike. Higher trim levels may offer leather upholstery and heated seats, adding to overall comfort.

However, some critics have noted that the ride can feel a bit firm, especially on rough or uneven surfaces, which might detract from the comfort level for some passengers. The cabin is reasonably well-insulated but might allow some road noise to enter, especially at highway speeds. Overall, the 2018 Jeep Renegade provides a decent level of comfort, especially considering its price range and class, but opinions may differ based on individual expectations and specific driving conditions.

How Much Storage Space Does the Jeep Renegade Have?

The 2018 Jeep Renegade offers a versatile storage space that accommodates the needs of adventure seekers and daily commuters alike. When the rear seats are upright, it provides 18.5 cubic feet of cargo space, enough room for everyday items like grocery bags, small pieces of luggage, or sporting equipment. For those needing more space for larger items, the rear seats can be folded down to create a total of 50.8 cubic feet of cargo area.

This expanded space can fit larger objects such as bicycles, a substantial amount of camping gear, or even a small piece of furniture. Additionally, the front passenger seat can be folded flat to accommodate longer items, showcasing the Renegade’s adaptability in handling various cargo needs. The available storage capacity and functional design make the 2018 Jeep Renegade a practical choice for those who require both space and flexibility.

VehicleHistory Image

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The first generation of the Jeep Renegade was launched for the 2015 model year.

2015: First model year for the new compact SUV from Jeep.

2016: More standard features offered, and an upgraded Beats stereo system is available.

2017: Keyless ignition and Xenon headlights added.

2018: Rearview camera and a 5-inch touchscreen are now standard on all models, the larger touch screens offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

2019: Small exterior styling changes, and more options packages.

2020: More powerful 1.3-liter engine, standard remote smartphone app on all models.

2021: Additional standard driver safety features, Limited model comes with 4WD only, and some limited edition trims.

How Does the Jeep Renegade Compare to the Competition?

The 2018 Jeep Renegade is a terrible small SUV since it has a lot of serious mechanical problems that get very expensive as it ages, making it one buyers should avoid, especially out of warranty.

The Subaru Outback is a slightly larger SUV which can be found for about $4,000 more. The standard all-wheel drive system is better in the Subaru Outback, while the Jeep Renegade offers a nicer base stereo. We recommend the Subaru Outback since it has much lower ownership costs.

The Honda CR-V is another small SUV which is available for $3,500 more. Long-term reliability ratings are much better in the Honda CR-V, while the Jeep Renegade has some higher-quality interior materials. We recommend the Honda CR-V since it will last much longer, and be more affordable.

Gas mileage. Affordable vehicle.
The worst renegade problems. A serious defect in the 2.4l tigershark engine causes an excessive amount of oil to be burned during normal operation. Owners must constantly top off the oil and have consumption tests run at the dealership, or risk the engine seizing up.

A+ for style and comfort!
Pros: great comfort and features! The setup works perfect for me. The drive is smooth. It is spacious. The extra trunk space is a lifesaver. Cons: have to fill up with gas often. It does not seem like it will last long on my dirt road because it is not as sturdy as other vehicles. Doors slam easy. It is only 2 yrs old with 20,000 miles but feels like it is 5-6yrs old. Overall, I love the style and love to drive it!

The only present problem is that the key fob often loses power and I have to unlock the door manually. And then I cannot unlock any other doors without reaching over and doing so, making opening the trunk very difficult when it does not work. Aside from that, it is comfortable and handles well.

2018 jeep renegade is my favorite investment.
I have a 2018 jeep renegade. One of the best purchases I have ever made. It drives so well, has a great speaker system, and has so many beneficial controls. It is comfy, and has a good ac/heat system. It is a square shape, which bothered me a bit at first, but it has grown on me. It drives really well and keeps the driver and passengers safety in mind. My only concern is that for some reason the front tires wear out quicker than the back ones. I have to get the front and back tires switched soon, but I am not sure if the type of car I have seriously affects the tire shelf life.

Great fuel mileage, great car for a teenager, horrible car for a mom.
The windshield is straight up, I have had to replace my windshield 3 times. You can feel every bump. Other that it is a very nice car, gets great fuel mileage, would recommend for a teen, not for a mom, the car seats are hard to put in and take out, and not much leg room.

Great quality vehicle with many neat features.
Very reliable. I find it comfortable as a short person. It is very open and spacious but not a huge vehicle. The difference drive modes and panoramic sunroof are great features. It does drive a little rougher than other vehicles and I wish the motor was bigger. The higher suspension and lightweight quality is very helpful though especially being in Minnesota. You can only pull a small trailer / cannot pull people out of ditches but the hooks to help you out as needed are perfect. My favorite part of the vehicle is the beats by dre speaker system and the sunroof. I also enjoy the 7in screen w Sirius xm and android auto to be hands free. Also a great perc is the charging ports for USB and a house outlet. It also has very good gas mileage for 4wd but only a 12g tank. It is very lightweight so windy MN days are difficult but the amount of safety features and anti roll option puts you at ease. Overall very much enjoy this vehicle.

2018 jeep renegade latitude - very enjoyable!
I love my jeep renegade. It is comfortable and runs well. It has the technology that I need and gets decent gas mileage. The only issues I have had are glitches in the computer systems occasionally like my tethering with my phone goes on and off and my ac computer thing went out and had to be replaced.

My jeep renegade is small enough to travel and fit in tight spaces.
I love my jeep renegade, it is small enough for me back up in tight spaces, especially living in the city. I love the leather interior. The jeep rides so smooth and nice. Very comfortable. It fits just enough people 3-4. It does not take to much gas just about 20 dollars will do it.

I wouldn't suggest the purchase.
Does not work as good as I'd hope. It was a dream when I drove off of the lot. Then within 3 weeks the engine is so loud. When I drive it tries to stall out. I have contacted the dealership many times and they updated the software but that fixed nothing. The mileage is not good at all. It is very comfortable though.

Love this vehicle, just a few complaints
I love this vehicle. One thing that bothers me is sometimes when turning on the car the A/C automatically turns on to max air. Also, when using Bluetooth the vehicle does not automatically default to the Bluetooth setting when turned on. It takes a little while to be able to play the music off my phone.

It great reliable car with no problems.
The only problem is the GPS at random and rare it glitches but it fixes itself. It is like a luxury car with lot bass and everything of the car is great it has seat warmer and wheel warm it is a fun small but with a bigger engine it probably be a great race car but for now it is a good chill relax car.

Renegade Trailhawk: 9/10.
This is a very nice simple SUV. It is very reliable, I have never had an issue. It has nice features such a bigger screen and backup camera. It has corner lights that detects you making a sharp turn and provides extra light for you to see when dark. It also has fog lights. The heated steering wheel is probably my most favorite thing about owning a newer car. There’s red trim on the Trailhawk version and it is a very beautiful accent. My only complaint is the size of the trunk/hatch. It is pretty small for an SUV. When I put my child’s stroller in there, that is basically the only thing that will fit. I definitely do not recommend it if you plan on stuffing a bunch of things in your trunk. Other than that it has everything you would want in an updated car that makes your life easier.

2018 jeep renegade positive review.
Car is compacted but can fit 4-5 comfortably. Great mpg at about 26 mpg. Drives well in all weather and road conditions. Trunk space is big enough for $300 worth of groceries. Great built in sound system. Interior cloth is nice and easy to clean.

Little touches - big difference.
Pros: gas mileage, height, feeling behind the wheel (very smooth ride), very reliable (have not had an issue yet), very comfortable and spacious, keyless entry is so helpful, I personally love the look, it has anti-rolling technology which I love on steep hills (that roll-back always makes me uneasy). Cons: it does not pick up speed quickly, relatively big blind spot (I am new to this size vehicle).

Its safe and it is very affordable and gas efficient.
I love the way it drives and the size. I also have a big sunroof. It's good on gas and I love driving it distances.

Renegade: a unique ride for anyone.
Great vehicle! This jeep is really fun to drive and easy to handle. I feel very safe in this vehicle. I also love all of the little 'easter eggs' throughout the vehicle. I do wish that there was more trunk space, however. The touch screen can be a bit difficult to use as well.
accountCircle Madelaine W on March 21, 2021
I love the hidden jeep ‘easter eggs’ that are scattered around the car.
The car has a slow acceleration which is expected from jeep. The seats are comfortable for short drives however for more than an hour it can get uncomfortable. For a more basic level of jeep, the renegade has a good amount of specialties to offer that are comparable to that of a wrangler.

Ups and downs of the jeep renegade.
The jeep renegade is a little on the small side with a smaller hatch for cargo. It sluggish when you take off not very peppy. It also needs more air vents for rear seat passengers. On the plus side it is great on gas mileage and easy to maneuver. The lease payments are reasonable as is the insurance.

Easy to drive and fun to drive.
Super comfortable and drives easy. I wish there was more space in the vehicle, and sometimes it smells hot. But that is my only issue with it. I love the color and the hidden easter eggs as well. I have enjoyed driving it and it even gets pretty good gas mileage.

Jeeps are awesome, loud but comfortable.
A little bumpy on the highway. I have the large tires and it is also makes a loud hum. Can't wait to take it off road. Everything comes off the vehicle making it awesome in the summertime. I would highly recommend this vehicle. Also has a car seat in the back with a lot of room. It is 4 door.
accountCircle Nicole F on March 15, 2021
Great car for the average joe.
So far the car has been great. It does not accelerate as fast as I would like it to and it really picks up all the bumps in the road making it not the smoothest of rides. Overall no major complaints with the vehicle. It gets great mileage for a jeep. About 26 mpg on average.
accountCircle Ronald S on March 14, 2021
Its fast and reliable and its orange.
The car is very reliable. 4wd is amazing with the wheelbase that also helps getting that very need grip to tear through and terrain. Comfortable. The gas mileage my average with highway and town is 24 mpg. Then again I have lead foot so you may get more all in all I recommend this vehicle to anyone looking for a good little vehicle.

Color. Apple play. Gas miles
It has great gas miles which is very important to me because I travel a lot. It Very roomy with is great because I have a 6' 4' boyfriend who can't fit anything. Love the amazing red color my Jeep is. Apple play is amazing with is very important for hands free driving.

Love the easter eggs that jeep has put around the vehicle!
I bought my jeep a year and a half ago and absolutely love it! Only issue initially was with the a/c but was covered under the warranty. For a smaller SUV it is definitely roomy. Drives great, amazing gas mileage, apple carplay (full dash screen). Would recommend this vehicle to anyone!
accountCircle Lorraine B on March 7, 2021
Spacious and drives smooth.
Jeeps are known for their top heavy design but you would never know that is the case with this vehicle. It handles turns well and the drive is always smooth. I can drive for hours with minimal discomfort if any at all. It is hand free feature is one that makes my rides safer and enjoyable as I can play any music right from my phone. This vehicle is also quite roomie inside, the back seat is spacious. The seats are also very easy fold down which offers that much more space. I love this feature because it allows me enough room to move large items that may for fit a smaller vehicle. While the renegade is so spacious inside, it is quite company on the outside. Fitting in smaller spaces is a non-issue.

Would say in safety it is good vehicle and in snow it did good for me.
Bought it from Shively motors in Chambersburg, pa. When sold it to me didn't tell me there was already recalls on the renegades. Therefore, when driving home the car just shut off in middle of traffic and would not start back up. Took it in to be fixed, and same day left me sit again. 3 times this happened until it was finally fixed.

Nice looks and Drivability.
I love my jeep, it is very reliable. Has a ton of great features and looks nice throughout. I love the backup camera, heated seats and wheel, and the apple car play. I do wish that the back of the car was a bit more spacious but overall I am pretty satisfied with my purchase.
accountCircle Jocelyn J on March 2, 2021
The car shape is unique and although it definitely has a lot of space inside.
Since getting the jeep renegade, my car has been the most reliable yet. It is performance is great, maintenance is affordable, the seats are very comfortable and the features for car play are awesome. My jeep has gone on multiple adventures and has successfully gotten me through it all.

2018 jeep renegade - sport.
This is not a vehicle I would recommend. I have had multiple problems with the electrical system and I bought the car brand new of the lot. I have taken it to a workshop and nobody can seem to fix the problem. The only positive thing about this vehicle is that it is more spacious than it seems.
accountCircle Hannah H on February 26, 2021
This is the best! My Jeep Renegade will be with me for many years!
Super comfortable and spacious for tall people. It is good on gas for its size, great for long-distance trips, and has a lot of custom tech options. I love how easy it is to add accessories to this car as well. Payments are kind of high when leasing this type of car. The only things the car lacks are: heated seats and showing miles until empty gas tank.
