2016 Mazda CX-5 Review: Compact SUV With Transmission Problems Buyers Should Avoid

Alex Showalter
Oct 29, 2022

The 2016 Mazda CX-5 lasts around 200,000 miles with some serious transmission and electrical issues. At $14,375 to $16,950, it’s cheaper than other compact SUVs, but not worth it when mechanical problems cost thousands to fix.

likeFilled The Good
Handling is more responsive than other SUVs, interior materials are nice for the price and the upgraded safety technology offers advanced features.
dislikeFilled The Bad
The cabin is noisier than other SUVs, suspension is firm on rough roads and there are some expensive problems which develop as they age.

Is the 2016 Mazda CX-5 a Good Used SUV?

  • Overall Rating 6/10 – 2016 is a bad year for the Mazda CX-5, they just have too many problems to earn a higher overall score. Owner reviews complain about electrical issues, brake problems, as well as check engine lights.
  • Interior, Comfort & Cargo 8/10 – Interior materials are nicer than average in the CX-5, the seats are comfortable for long trips, although cargo space is a bit lower than average.
  • Reliability 6/10 – The 2016 Mazda CX-5 has more complaints than any other year. Buyers should avoid models from 2014 & 2016. We recommend 2015 along with 20172021, which all have fewer problems.
  • Performance 7/10 – Performance is average from both of the available 4-cylinder engines.
  • Safety 7/10 – The CX-5 is reasonably safe, earning 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests. Optional safety features include a rearview camera, adaptive cruise control, smart brake support, as well as lane departure warning.
  • Gas Mileage 8/10 – Fuel economy is great at up to 29 MPG giving 443 miles of range from the 15.3 gallon tank. Gas costs are $50 lower than average, at $209 per month.
  • Value 6/10 – Expensive problems found in the 2016 Mazda CX-5 make it a bad long-term value since you’ll spend a lot of money fixing it up as it ages.

Reliable. Sleek. Decent gas mileage. No dislikes. No complaints

It is very spacious inside.
I absolutely love my car. It is very spacious inside and perfect for a family of any size. The seats are comfy and the features are great. I have had great experiences with Mazda overall.

Top notch safety features.
The only problem we have had with it was last winter when some rodents got in the engine and chewed through something that messed with the electrical functions. The repair shop said that it was because of the material that particular area was made of, which Mazda started using because it is better for the environment. Otherwise, I love this SUV. It is compact but roomy on the inside, and the safety features are top notch. The other day, when I was driving on the highway, a car switched lanes and was so close to my front bumper that the car began alerting, telling me to break immediately. Then, today, I was stopped at a red light, and when it turned green, the car in front of me started to go straight, then slammed on their brakes suddenly to make a right turn instead. Before I could even react to that, my car suddenly stopped and made a funny noise because my foot was still on the gas pedal (I guess). I still haven't fully processed that the car in front of me had a sudden change in plan, and my first thought was that the transmission in my car just went out. After a couple of seconds, I was back on my way though, and my car ran perfectly fine the rest of the day. Now, I think that it stopped to prevent me from hitting the car that was in front of me, and would not let the gas pedal function until the car had completely moved from being in front of any sensor.

Reason to recommend purchasing a Mazda
I would recommend this vehicle to anyone. Mazda's are known for their great miles & for their speed.

My cx-5 is an awesome car, and everyone should try it!
This car is great and super reliable. I always feel safe when I drive it; it responds really well. The comfort on the inside is great too. Seats are heated and comfy to sit on during long drives, and easily adjustable. I have not had to work on it very much at all, no major issues with performance or reliability. It has great mileage too, I would recommend buying this car.

All around wonderful vehicle.
I love the car. My only complaint is that it has more blind spots than I would prefer. However, the blind spot detection compensates for this. The body of the car is sleek and practical. There is plenty of foot room and trunk space. It has plenty of power and handles really well in bad weather. All around this is the best vehicle I have ever owned. It also has a very high safety rating which adds to the appeal.

Wonderful car. The family loves it.
This car rides very smooth and feels safe. The only real issue I've had is with the navigation screen. Sometimes it locks up and I have to hit the Home button then go back to the navigation screen. Like a reboot.

Perfect car for day trips for family and retirees.
My cx 5 is great on gas. Very reliable. Easily seat four adults comfortably. Perfect vehicle for road trips. Great sound systems. Love the seat warmers. It handles great in the hills. It's easy to get service. Any and all recalls are quickly and efficiently handled.

Running Lights
Enjoyed the car handling and looks ($30,000 price tag), But the running lights in the housing assembly is one whole unit, when the running lights go out, you will have to pay $1,000 per each light assembly, my vehicle is 3 years old with 40k miles, so everyone with a 4 or 5 star rating might reconsider after coughing up an additional $2,000 to the price tag just for lights or just continue driving around with you vehicle having one eye! This needs to be recalled, Mazda needs to address this problem or lose more buyers, this was my 3rd Mazda and my be my last.

There is an awful steering wheel.
The steering wheel is awful. Where the cross bars are set it interferes with where you want to put your hands. The visibility in the car is not great and the backup camera is poor quality. If I were asked to recommend this vehicle to someone I would not be able to confidently do so.

Check engine light
2 weeks after getting this vehicle I had problems with it. The electrical system of the car wasn’t working they towed my car to the closest dealership and i had a rental for 2 weeks. 2 years later and 80,000kms The Center console latch broke it’s a plastic clip and My check engine light would turn on and then turn off randomly. I didn’t get it check right away because I thought it wouldn’t be a big deal if it turned off on it’s own. Finally I had it checked out and found out my catalytic converter was broken and with further examination they found that my gasket was broken. I really don’t understand how such a new vehicle can have so many problems.
accountCircle Nicole W
Interior of Mazda cx-5 is disappointing.
Poor reliability with interior has fallen apart with normal use requiring expensive repairs. Bluetooth capabilities are inconsistent for a 4 year old vehicle. As far as vehicle performance this car has been fine, minimal repairs have been needed. I overall would not recommend this car to a friend or family member. Interior improvements would be necessary to keep the car for more than another year.

Vehicle not for short people.
My Mazda cx-5 is a grand touring, 2016. It does not have enough power. Inside trim looks nice but parts are breaking and falling apart shortly after purchasing brand new. Blind spots if you are short. Radio dial and controls for heat/ac or too far away and awkward.
accountCircle tracy K
It looks cheap inside. I would like the trunk to open automatically.
It chews up gas. It has issues with the NAV screen.
accountCircle Ashlee H
Car is fine but I do not like it.
I think my car is too big. It runs fine and I use it a lot but I hate how big it is. I will be getting a smaller car at some point but I am still paying this one off. I have never had many difficulties except one repair that cost over $1000. I also do not like the color I got, blue, but it was the cheapest.

What Do Critics Say About the Mazda CX-5?

  • Consumer Reports says the 2016 CX-5 has a choppier ride than other compact SUVs, with average owner satisfaction scores.
  • Edmunds gives the CX-5 a 4.3/5 praising the sporty driving experience, but doesn’t like the weak stereo system.
  • Kelley Blue Book users rate the CX-5 at 4.6/5, enjoying the nice interior for the money, but owners don’t like the low towing capacity at only 2,000 pounds.

What Common Problems Does the 2016 Mazda CX-5 Have?

Common problems found on the 2016 Mazda CX-5 include daytime running light failures, the transmission failing to move from park to drive, as well as brake wear issues. Overall, these problems are worse than other compact SUVs from 2016, leading to higher repair costs, too.

Daytime running light failures are a widespread issue on the 2016 Mazda CX-5 in the first 10,000 miles. Many owners have replaced the LED lights, which cost around $1,000. In 2020, Mazda issued a recall to replace the headlight assembly. If you have paid for new headlights before, you can contact Mazda for more information on potential reimbursement.

The transmission failing to move from park to drive has also been mentioned at around 50,000 miles. This happens when there are broken components inside of the transmission. Replacing the transmission is the only way to fix the issue, costing around $4,800.

Excessive brake wear is another common complaint in the first 30,000 miles, which keeps happening as the CX-5 ages. The original pads and rotors tend to wear out quicker than in other SUVs. Changing out the pads costs around $300, while rotors are an additional $600. Some aftermarket pads and rotors last longer, making them a better choice.

There are 5 recalls, which is similar to other compact SUVs from 2016. The most serious recall is for the fuel filler pipe, which can rupture during a crash. Mazda will replace the fuel filler pipe on affected models for free. Other recalls cover the daytime running lights, rear lift gate, and the steering knuckle.

How Long Will the 2016 Mazda CX-5 Last?

A well-maintained 2016 Mazda CX-5 may last around 200,000 miles before it becomes too costly to repair, which is shorter than the highly rated Toyota RAV4. Regular annual maintenance costs are similar to other compact SUVs, according to data from Repair Pal, at $387 per year.

Since many 2016 CX-5 models for sale have over 100,000 miles buyers should be prepared to replace the heater core for $1,500, stabilizer bushings costing $550, as well as the camshaft, which costs $625.

accountCircle Margo K

Yes very reliable. The only thing is when it is under 30 degrees outside, the computer/ dashboard monitor reboots multiple times until the car is warmer.

accountCircle Joanne E

Very reliable so far with no problems after 3 years of ownership. It will also tell me when a maintenance is due.

accountCircle Kate S

It is very reliable. Cost of maintenance is super low. I have had it under a year but so far it has had no problems.

accountCircle Leah J

The back up camera sometimes does not come on when putting the car in reverse and the camera lens gets dirty easily.

accountCircle Dana O

I have not had any problems with the Mazda cx 5. Routine oil changes and breaks at appropriate mileage have been extent of repairs.

accountCircle Kaleigh M

I have not had any issues with my vehicle so far. I have found it to be very reliable and I feel very safe driving it.

accountCircle Amanda M

The Mazda CX5 is extremely reliable. The only problem that we have experienced is lack of space in the rear seats for baby carriers without having to move the front seats up extremely far on the dash.

accountCircle Rachael H

It is reliable, but I have only had it 3 years. I have never broken down. The air conditioning and heat is not forceful enough and engine has two fans.

How Is the Technology?

Entertainment technology is average in the 2016 CX-5 with standard Bluetooth connectivity. Optional upgrades include a 7-inch touchscreen stereo. The safety technology is better than average with an optional rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, automatic braking, and lane departure warning.

Is the 2016 Mazda CX-5 a Good Value?

No, the 2016 Mazda CX-5 is not a good value since it has more problems than any other year leading to higher ownership costs. Blue book prices range from $14,375 to $16,950, making it similar in price to a Honda CR-V or VW Tiguan. When new, the price range was $21,795 to $29,470. Depreciation is worse than average, losing about 12% of its current value per year.

What are the Different Models of the Mazda CX-5?

There are three main models of the Mazda CX-5 offered in 2016, from the base Sport up to the well-equipped Grand Touring.

What Are the Differences Between Years?

The first generation of the Mazda CX-5 was introduced in 2013, and was replaced by the second generation in 2017.

2014: Larger engine in Touring and Grand Touring models, optional collision warning & braking system.

2015: Standard keyless entry & ignition on Touring and Grand Touring models.

2016: Minor styling changes, updated stereo system, along with optional safety technology.

2017: Fully redesigned for the second generation with new interior, exterior, and engines.

2018: Standard blind spot monitoring, more fuel efficient.

2019: More powerful engine on Grand Touring Reserve & Signature, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto added, ventilated front seats, optional 360 degree camera.

2020: More noise reduction, standard high-tech safety features, diesel engine discontinued.

How Does the Mazda CX-5 Compare to the Competition?

The Mazda CX-5 ranked well when it was new, however, as it’s gotten older, too many problems have developed to recommend it over more reliable compact SUVs on the market.

The Honda CR-V is another small SUV which costs around $3,000 more. Reliability ratings are better in the Honda CR-V, while the interior materials are more luxurious in the Mazda CX-5. We recommend the Honda CR-V since they have fewer problems, making them a better choice for a used SUV out of warranty.

The Toyota RAV4 is a competitor which costs $3,500 more. Performance is a bit better in the Toyota RAV4, while the Mazda CX-5 offers a bit more passenger room in the second row. We recommend the Toyota RAV4 since it’s the longest-lasting compact SUV offered in 2016.

2016 CX-5 Blown Motor
Loved my CX-5. Took great care. Synthetic oil changed every 5,000 miles. Planned on it being a 200,000 car. At 108,000 miles...it threw a piston rod. I'm shocked and very discouraged. My 5th Mazda and prior to this, never had any problems. I'm done with the brand. This came at the worst possible time for me personally. Ford here we come...

Blessed with all weather mats great in the winter and now great at the beach.
Very comfortable to take trips in and a very smooth ride over not so smooth pavement. Has get up and go to merge into traffic on busy highways. We have had no mechanical or any issues at all with the vehicle thus far. The only annoyance is with the brakes which squeak a lot but is normal for the make and model.

I have loved my Mazda since day one. It is my second time to own a Mazda, I previously owned a cx-9. The comfort of the ride and options on the car-SUV are easy to get to while driving. Both the cx-5 and cx-9 have a lot of room for multiple passengers.

Mazda cx-5 2016 car review.
Great car for a family just starting out. Great gas mileage. Love the double option to control the touch screen. Some features include sunroof, heated leather seats, heat up to 90 degrees, XM radio, Bluetooth. I love the car but the only thing I wish was different was for their to be vents in the back seat for the heating and cooling other than that it is a great car.

Mazda cx 5 fun SUV to drive!
I love my car. It performs as expected. Its comfortable to drive in. I wish it had a back seat air vent and maybe more cargo space. But in the 4 years of having the car, maintenance is super easy on it. Nothing has been replaced on it. Other than the battery, but that's expected in phoenix,Arizona.

My Mazda cx-5 has been a solid, dependable vehicle that has performed well for me in all seasons, including snowy winters! The vehicle goes great in the snow- and that is very important to me. Handy, sporty SUV good for travel and families.
Vehicle rides fairly smoothly though there is a bit of road noise. The on-line navigation system sometimes fails to load properly and causes consternation. The tires that came with the car lasted exceptionally long and I just recently changed them at 65,000 miles. The ability to put all or some of the back seats down is very helpful and makes the car like a small station wagon.
accountCircle Al T on June 5, 2021
Great vehicle. Long way to sit.
I love my Mazda 6. It gets terrific gas mileage (32-35 mpg highway). The interactive display in the center of the dashboard is great for longer road trips. The trunk can hold as many as two sets of golf clubs. The rear seats lay down to give even more space, which is surprising for a mid-size sedan. It is only needed unscheduled maintenance once and it was covered by the power train warranty. I am a relatively tall guy (6’4”), and I sit up fine, but I do have a long way down to sit and land on the seat. It seems like it could be relatively problematic to people with joint challenges.
accountCircle Savannah C on May 30, 2021
The amazing features and qualities of the Mazda cx-5.
My vehicle is a very comfortable and cute make. It feels spacious and feels new. It is very safe because of the type of car and the fact that it is an SUV which I believe to be safer because of how they are made and because you sit up higher. It is pretty good on gas as well which is always a plus. The safety features on the car are great. One safety feature on the car is when you put on your left or right turn signals, it alerts you with a noise and light flashes on the side mirrors (left and right) if there is a vehicle in that lane or approaching fast, that way you do not go into that lane and cause an accident to happen. It has Bluetooth and radio and all the things you need to vibe and relax in the car. It has a large trunk and back seats to fit in groceries. The front drivers seat is adjustable by buttons so it is hi tech and nice. The back up camera is also a life saving feature. Overall, it is just a really good car.

My Mazda cx5. Is smart looking, affordable, car, with safety features I need.
I bought the car because it was a car that I was able to get in relatively easy after back surgery. I also, purchased the car because I wanted a safe vehicle. This car has heated seats for my back and wonderful safety features for my family. I ended up leasing this car for the first two and a half years because I wanted lower payments, and after the lease ended and because I only put a little over 5,000 miles on the car, lots of surgeries, I decided to purchase the car. The payments were pretty much the same amount and I am the only owner. Once the lease was up the car was still new to me, so I kept the car. Beside, the cx5 is a smart looking sturdy, affordable safe car which is roomy and funds to drive. This car gets good gas mileage, and has plenty of room for long trips. My Mazda cx5 is one of the best cars that I have ever owned, and I will be purchasing another new cx 5 once I trade or decide to buy a newer car.

Very reliable and solid vehicle. Drives very smooth. It has all wheel drive. With that, it does great in snow. Great gas mileage for a crossover. For my back, it has great lumbar support and heated seats. Great safety feature with the backup camera and side mirror alerts.

Love my Mazda drives like a sports car.
Rides smooth. Love the side mirror alerts. Can't live without backup camera. It handles like a small car easily to maneuver yetvis soacious. Haven't had any real problems. Only complaint is communications system. Awkward to use and you cannot turn off radio have to mute.

Summary of how hard car is to keep clean.
Small turning radius. Lots of rattles and blind spots. Hard to clean interior. Lots of tiny spot to clean and cannot get to. Low ground clearance. I do like the look of the interior when clean. Windows are very hard to clean on the inside. I have owned two of these vehicles.

White with black interior.
Great performance and reliability and great service at dealership. In terms of features I would like more up to date safety features such as monitoring when about to hit something with sensors in the front and the back. Also would prefer a sunroof or panorama window on top.

Great handling and acceleration and it looks stylish.
I love how the car drives and the way that it handles. I wish that fuel. Economy were better and they had paid more attention to the design of the seats and front seat area. The seats are stiff and don't offer the needed support while driving and the front is a tad cramped for anyone over 5'6. Also, the steering wheel doesn't include enough of a range in adjustments for my liking as opposed to the one in my 2016 Chevy Cruze.

Mazda cx-5 is amazing. Lots of up to date accessories.
I love everything about my cx-5. This is my 2nd cx-5 and my 4th Mazda. Accessories are easy to understand and use, such as GPS, Bluetooth, radio. I wish the passenger seat was electric, rather than a manual lever. Seats that can cool would be great.

Nice ride! Great size! Great on gas! Comfortable for the whole family. Trunk space is spacious.
I like the size of the car. It rides nicely. I don't like that parts of the car fell off in the first year. I think it was the cold weather and the pegs that attach items to the car.

Great car, minimal complaints.
Love the ride, love the torque. Freeway noise is much too loud. Suspension is super smooth. The headlights would be nice if they were automatic. The heated seats are awesome, and the blind spot detector are a must. Backup camera is great. Good car overall.

Mazda cx-5 it is a great ride my favorite highlight is the backup camera.
I have never had any issues with my vehicle I like that I have brake assist, blind spot alert and backup camera. I have not had any issues since bought it and I have gone three long trips, it rides smooth, I just love it, I would never buy any other vehicle.

I love the size, not too big & not too small. Compared to my last car, it's way more gas efficient. It has helpful features like the cameras to help with safety when backing up & changing lanes.
It's a practical and comfortable car that is gas efficient with plenty of storage and good safety features.

Bose speakers and sunroof.
Interior flaws when car was under warranty but were easily fixed. Has been reliable. Comfortable. Like the Bose speakers and sunroof. Touch screen. Navigation can be added. No set up for Sirius radio. Center console lid broke. Contains holder for sunglasses.

Enjoying my 2016 Mazda cx-5.
My Mazda has been reliable only one issue with the battery so far. The drive is smooth and it has great gas mileage. There is a little more road noise then I’d like, but I just turn the music up then. The leather interior is nice, and wears well. The stereo system has good sound.

The mid-sized Mazda CX-5 is a great value for the money.
I love that it has enough space for the family but is still small enough to get fairly good gas mileage. It is safe and has blind spot detection which I love on the highways. It is sporty and fun to drive.

Mazda CX5 is the Perfect Car
The Mazda CX 5 get very good gas mileage for a SUV. It drives very smoothly on the highway and city driving. The backseat is spacious enough for adults to sit there. The truck has plenty of space, it came in handy when I moved. There is more than enough space for everyday activities like getting groceries.

Sleek and speedy SUV takes you far without having to spend a pretty penny on gas.
It's great on gas. It drives very smooth and is very quiet. It looks very sleek on the inside and the outside. The canvas seats stain really easily even from water which makes them a hassle to clean. It's got a pretty nice sound system and is a perfect size because it's not too big but it still comfortable fits 5 people and has a nice amount of trunk space.

Excellent comfortable ride. Great sound system. Easy hatchback. Tires wear quickly though. Good acceleration.
Original Tires wear very quickly ...less than 40000 miles

Dependable and reliable car.
It is a dependable car with a lot of great features. It had Bluetooth audio, GPS, and hands free calling. It drives really smooth and also gets great gas mileage. Seats are comfortable and can fit a lot of storage. Perfect size for one person or someone with a small family.

The color is red. My favorite color of all the options.
I haven’t had any problems with my car. It has always been very reliable. It gets excellent gas mileage. It drives smooth. It runs well. No trouble out of the engine. I love the sport feature, it works great when I need to pass quickly or merge onto the interstate or highway. I also love the color.

Very comfortable for family of 3 (soon to be 4).
I have had this car for 3 years now and I still love it! I have a toddler and a baby on the way and I think it is still the perfect car for our family. I like that it is roomy enough for us, but it is not too big. Eventually we will need a car with a third row but not yet! The trunk has plenty of space and you are comfortable no matter where you are sitting.

Great vehicle and great price.
This vehicle has all the bells and whistles. It is a very comfortable riding car and we love it. The navigation system is very easy to use and mostly accurate except for maybe where road construction is causing errors. This car is heavy and very well made.

Mazda cx-5: the couch on wheels.
The Mazda cx-5 is super comfortable! It is like a couch on wheels, and when in cruise control, you can just set the distance you want to keep from the car in front of you, and the cx-5 will automatically hit the brakes to maintain the distance. Mazda is a trustworthy company, and the cx-5 lives up to the reliability expectations. The only issue is random lights sometimes come on the dashboard when nothing is wrong.
